As originally designed in 1937, there were nine turnpike tunnels. From west to east: Laurel Hill was built and bypassed in the mid-60's. Quemahoning and Negro Mountain tunnels were bypassed during construction in the 30's. Allegheny Mountain still exists. Rays Hill and Sideling Hill were abandoned and bypassed in the late 60's. Tuscarora, Kittatinny and Blue Mountain still exist. All became twin tunnels in the 60's when backups of five miles and more were common at the two-lane tunnels. With the Turnpike Commission rebuilding the original Turnpike and expanding it to six lanes, the four-lane tunnels are becoming obsolete and are deteriorating a bit, but still safe to drive. Allegheny is to be either bypassed or expanded and rebuilt soon; plans for rebuilding the other three tunnels are underway.

Many a trip through those tunnels going from Cleveland to Elkton MD back in the 70's. All the Howard Johnson's at the rest areas and Exxon gas. Cross the Susquehanna river, get off at Harrisburg and head south. Crossing that bridge you would see 3-mile island off to one side. Never thought anything of it, prior to 1979 anyways.

I heard that a truck driver was recently killed in the Lehigh Tunnel. I think an electric beam or a slab of concrete fell from the ceiling and went through his windshield. You think maybe this will force PA to adress the aging tunnels and come up with possible solutions?

If they decide to bypass the Allegheny tunnel. They should put 4 miles of road way on each side and call it the Abandoned Turnpike West and make it a bike and hike trail too. Provided they make sure the tunnel wont collapse and kill anyone. But it would be unique being an abandoned double tunnel.
