Disagree with you on the power button placement. Whenever power buttons are on the side or front, i find that it's easy to accidentally press it when moving the laptop around. Putting it on the corner means that this will happen much less.

I'm not an expert but I think the power button placement, wobbly screen and gigantic bezel would be attributed to it being a convertible laptop.
Power button placement = prevents accidentally pressing it on the edge while in tablet mode
Wobbly screen = less rigidity due to hinge being able to go 360
Gigantic bezel = so you have somewhere to hold if you fancy your self drawing the next Mona Lisa while
    .
I guess its better to just focus on what you really are (a laptop) instead of trying to be something you are not (also a tablet)

    • @Hirvee5
      @Hirvee5 5 років тому +18

I otherwise agree but I think 360's usually require more rigidity to work and stay in place with pen and touch in more positions while otherwise you might just want to have a screen that is easy to open with one hand. And my general understanding is that for this reason the 360's are usually much more rigid and you can't open most of them with one hand.

And also I really love my lenovo x380 yoga 2in1 and think it is somewhat close the perfect instance of an laptop for me to exist. In case of previous points I would say that
Power button placement = Newer had any problems.
Wobbly screen = No. it has the most rigid screen ever. Much more rigid than any non 2in1 I have seen. And I really like this.
Gigantic bezel = Newer thought it was big. It fits a full hd screen perfectly. And I think it is the best resolution currently.

Well i bought this laptop the 13in variant two weeks ago and i like it so far. Almost all the complaints linus made are exaggerated. The power button placement is convenient for no accidental presses during tablet or tent mode. The pen can stored in the sleeve that came with laptop. The trackpad is fine , I've actually installed the precision driver and found it to be skipping lots of presses, so i went to synaptics again (can you believe it?). The size of the keyboard is good even with the speakers on top. The bezels are there so you can hold it in tablet mode without accidental touches. The 16:9 ratio is standard, only surface and matebooks have 3:2. My only complains are the trackpad small rattle at the corners, and the sharp edges.
Edit 1: alot of people have been asking me , so I'll put my opinion after 1 years of usage.
I didn't experience overheating (idk about thermal throttle), but the case does get hot on your lab after a while.
The screen refresh rate never bothered me, but the brightness is bad for the price.
The laptop is good for light usage only. It's more form over function. Don't expect it to run crysis
The battery life held up quite good.
The laptop can only be charged by official HP charger, any other charger will not work.
All in all , I give it an 8/10 as a light office laptop.
It's main selling point is the 360 hinge which I didn't use much. Your better off with the xps if you want a no nonsense laptop. Touch screen is just not applicable for me in win10 devices

Missed the entire purpose of the gem cut design. After complaints from convertible users that the power button is always getting hit, turning the machine on in the bag (leaving you with a dead laptop) or off while using it in tablet mode, HP created a brilliant fix--put it on a corner cut at a 45 degree angle and it's not able to be easily hit in any mode. It's harder to hit BY DESIGN.

    • @naxzed_it

Watching this review almost made me change my decision on saving up for this laptop and I thought I would have to look at another option. It shook my confidence in this laptop and broke my heart because I could not find a 15 inch 2 in 1 laptop with the dedicated graphics and a full sized keyboard. Everything else I looked at I was sacrificing at least one item on my spec list if I looked anywhere else. I actually had to go to bestbuy and test out the trackpad myself. While I can't say anything about them using Synaptic drivers in the trackpad, those dead zones he saw were not there. I tend to like most of your reviews Linus, but some times, such as this time, it feels like you’re the CinemaSins of reviewers.
Power button placement is not an issue on this device. Side mounted power buttons get hit accidentally ALL THE TIME.
The laptop sleeve INCLUDED with the device has a stylus holder. Heck, the stylus itself has a pocket clip if you’re desperate.
Even little things, like your complaint about the FP sensor not being in the power button. The last gen had that. Consumers asked for it back on the keyboard deck.
Yes some of your complains were definite warranted, but other than the 15in screen problems and trackpad issues, most of your complaints seem like non issues. In fact you’re the only reviewer of this device that had problems with these things.

  • @AAntoine
    @AAntoine 5 років тому +23

I have the 13'' and I'll add my bit to Linus' experience. He is pretty much spot on for most things, but I did find that he was pretty harsh on certain details that really do not matter. For example, the power button is in the corner for ease of access, and it is really easy to reach at all times, I have never struggled to press it.
Also, the fingerprint sensor is on the palm rest area because users complained about it being on the side in earlier generations. That being said, the location is decent in my opinion, but the real problem is its accuracy. I usually have to press and lift my finger 2-3 times every time I want to unlock, and each reading itself takes probably half a second to a full second, making it noticeably slow and/or inaccurate.
The synaptics trackpad is bad with the synaptics driver, but after spending a couple of hours, I found a way to install precision drivers and it instantly becomes a GREAT trackpad.
Honestly, I was hesitating between the HP and a surface pro, but the lack of USB-C or thunderbolt 3 made me go the HP way. The build quality is not as good, but at least you get better specs and a cheaper price.

The fingerprint sensor as well, I also believe Linus is completely wrong when he talked about the placement, the sensor on this thing is terrible on placement, but when I actually do find it, it works for me about 90% of the time.
I also got the precision drivers going on this puppy, and it's a beautiful trackpad after that correction.
Overall... beautiful and very functional laptop. I use it at work as an IT guy for a school district, gets thrown around a little more than i'd hope, and it still chugs along just fine.

@@MrFijiBoySako Fair enough, but I wouldn't recommend getting a 2-in-1 in that case. The thick top and bottom bezels are massively helpful when using the device in tablet mode, giving you an area that you can firmly grip without worrying about touching the screen itself. If you had slim bezels all around you'd either have to cradle it around the back, or try to get a pinch grip on the tiny bezels, which isn't comfortable or safe, and puts a point load on the chassis, vs. spreading the load out a bit.
As someone who has loved using W8 and W10 2-in-1 computers for a good 5 years now, despite how it may look aesthetically, not having those bezels would be a big downside for me, and the unit would have to truly amazing in other ways to make up for it.

How has nobody else been able to get it right in all that time? And worse, fail so clearly as in this case? It is out of the 1 year warranty so if you call their support line for help they will tell you you're out of luck unless you pay hundreds of dollars for them to fix it. But I found out that if you post on the forums and get a mod to escalate your issue to a health and safety representative, they'll fix it for free one time.

I never noticed the touch pad issue he mentions, probably because I just use it differently. The power button is a non-issue, I was actually super happy to see the placement. Then again, I am left handed. Also, mine came with the privacy screen feature, and judging from what I can see in this video, Fn+F1 on their keyboard has that same option available. Not sure how they would have missed that. My only issue with this laptop was that the function keys defaulted to the fancy functions instead of regular F keys, this was easily changed in the BIOS setup.
A note on my possible bias: I bought this, reluctantly at first, a few months after HP (actually HPE, it was after the split) laid me off because my work could be done cheaper in India.

I had the original release of the x360 13", it had:
-Interference between the USB 3.0 and bluetooth cards internally, causing USB 3.0 misbehaving with external HDDs and mice (unusable), and horribly jittery bluetooth connections with audio.
-Ghost touches on the display like crazy! Driver update HP released caused the screen to be much less responsive to "fix" the problem. Disabled the touchscreen permanently.
-Fan that screamed under any medium/high load.
-Unreliable audio jack recognition of headphones/mics plugged in.
-Hinges that racked and was obvious that the lid didn't line up with the body when closed.
-Crappy audio (expected but heavily oversold).

I think Linus is getting this thing wrong.
I mean yes, the bezels are a bit big (the top one is big because of network hardware being hidden up there to ensure good connectivity) and yes the screen has a little bit of a slow reaction time, but srsly, I want to use that thing and not complain that a pixel turns off just not fast enough.
And yes, synaptics is not great but you can switch to precision if you just can't stand it at all.
    But the rest is ridiculous.
The power button is just fine, I have never ever heard someone complain about a power button... I mean... Just no...
Complaining about the pen holder. For real. First you say you don't want a holder at all, now you say you want one. Get your s**t together and decide. Also, every single other 2in1 does not have a holder and there it is just fine.
The same thing with the hinge. Every other 2in1 has the same one and it is just fine...

Looking fwd to seeing your review of the 2019 Ice Lake version as HP seems to have addressed all of your concerns: Bezels, windows precision trackpad and new displays

I have the Envy x360 with Synaptics touchpad. I see the same behavior and never considered it a problem. There is a buffer zone on the edge of the touchpad that won't activate the cursor. I tried exactly what Linus did.... slow or fast touching on the edge of the touchpad when the cursor is not visible doesn't wake the cursor. But after the cursor is awake and on screen, the same "dead zone" is not dead. I can move the cursor even along the extreme left edge of the pad. I think it is working as designed. The heels of my palms under my thumbs normally brush the edges of the touchpad as I touch type. So it's good that they don't trigger mouse action or clicks with this well-planned zone. And of course there are settings that I set a long time ago to change the size of the zone, sensitivity, cursor speed, etc. It's all good.

I went ahead and bought one. The trackpad is easily its weakest point. The 4K screen is okay but nothing spectacular. It also gets so hot that it's melted the glue holding the feet to the base. Just got a couple of replacements from HP. Without the feet, there's zero airflow through the fans as the air intake is at the bottom, so it just causes it to get hotter. Performance-wise, I can't complain.

Have you tried the HP Envy x360 13?
It's a price tier lower than the spectre, although the Build quality is really nice, there is no Deck Flex, it has the same Keyboard but not these weird trackpad and monitor issues.
Oh, and it features Ryzen Mobile ^^

I have used the most expensive spectre, the 15 inch DF-0500ND, and it overheated after three weeks and I had to send it back. Where nothing got fixed... This was apparently due to some problem with the 1050 Ti Max-Q inside. bottom line, do not by unless you want to be unable to use your laptop for three weeks, three/four weeks after purchase (and you have $2799 dollars laying around).
