    I'm completely with you on this one. I care deeply about not being sensationalist in my videos, which are ultimately my "product". I view the thumbnail and title as a marketing package to get people interested in my product, and of course it has to be a bit sensationalist at times to have a chance against the other videos on UA-cam. That's how the algorithm and the audience works in 2024.

      Yah, totally my take as well, and it’s not just UA-cam, it’s our job. Getting people to watch the videos is part of the job. Then hopefully we deliver a satisfying experience with the video.

    I don't mind the clickbaity titles and thumbnails at all.
    What irritates me is that in the actual video itself you'll often not actually mention the lens you're talking about, referring to it as "this lens" in the dialogue. You don't seem to be doing it a much any more, but it is still there occasionally

      The problem is that it probably scares away on the mid/longterm the others who are interested in having a more 'objective' (e.g. the 5:55 example). But creators need to have fair return and today clickbait kind of works. IMHO it's just an algorithm problem, where balanced-optimisation takes over redactional quality. Would love better curation, or maybe a two-title option for videos.

I actually had a few of your recent lens videos in my watch later, so that when I'm ready to buy a lens I can go back to them. • @europlatus

    I really appreciate the transparency in this video. For many of us, I don't think we actually need an explanation because we know that it's just how UA-cam works. Half of the problem is the algorithm, but the other half is how people get sucked in by sensationalist writing, which is not your problem. So, I fully understand why you need to go this route. That said, my only warning would be to remember your "Don't be evil" value, which I think is a very good one to have. Some titles designed to provoke a reaction (e.g. "Why x blows y out of the water!", "Will x kill off y for good?", "x is now irrelevant!") can feed into the fandom issues and petty fighting that we see in the photography world. For example, the APS-C vs Full Frame debate, which shouldn't even be a debate, but we see some people fighting for one side and actively trying to kill the other. You might find that some of your most clickable titles inadvertently undermine one of your primary goals for the channel. Not "evil" of course, but possibly having a subtle negative impact, even if the content of the video itself is balanced (not everyone will watch the video).

      I was going to say the same thing. In the Viltrox 27mm f1.2 video mentioned, the name of the lens isn't mentioned until 3:45. I would have expected it to be somewhere in the description at minimum. That's also probably what's making it so hard to search for these reviews based on the lens name: the search-bar can only give results on text, not the video itself.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  Місяць тому

      I don’t think it’s ironic, I talked about that in this video. It’s how the video gets views, with a tittle and thumbnail that is clickable on the home page, but can’t be found in search, which is an annoying side effect of the strategy.

    On the topic of how to make these videos with "clickable" titles appear in search, the tech channel LinusTechTips posts new videos with clickable titles, waits for a week or two, then retroactively add the product name back into the title. This ensures that you can get the initial boom, AND make the video searchable (after the boom).

    I totally understand and support, if you need to use these tactics.
    I am totally the target audience you described, did not know about these good price/quality lenses.
    The only difficulty for me is, when I want to get back to a video I watched about a particular lense, it is hard to find that with these titles. But if it helps you this way, I can live with it.
    Lastly, it is uncommon that people would make such videos, which explain their point of view on a sensitive topic like clickbait. It shows that you care and are transparent.

I was thinking about what you said in the end of the video, that the clickbait titles doesn't show up in search. What about the tag section when uploading a video, if you put the name of the lens in the tags, won't that help the video being searchable?

The one thing I haven't been able to figure out is if there is an EF converter for the lens mount types you list in your descriptions. Is there something you recommend or do you have a video where you cover the most common mount types out there and what converters are available. Most of the lenses you have recommended are quite interesting but I haven't bought a single one because I haven't figured out if I can make it work with the equipment I have. One piece of feedback I will offer though, is maybe you could leave a few more seconds after your signoff when you have the next video on screen so that folks can actually click it! Either way, this channel has been super helpful though as someone new to the photography space, so I appreciate that!

    As a fellow UA-camr, I think you need to experiment with different titles/thumbnails to see the results. If you're not getting the results you want you need to change it up. It's just the way it is. A/B testing of thumbnails or repurposing of videos is also a good way to see what resonates with your audience. I don't want to say it's necessarily trial and error, but the UA-cam algorithm can be picky. Love your channel & keep up the good work! I've bought so many things based on your recommendations.

    Unfortunately it's the reality of YT. Good thumbnail is more important than video itself. I'm not saying I'm making good videos, but better the thumbnail, more views (I especially seen this on one of my last videos, when I got 3k views in 1 day, when I usually get 500 total).
    Although I haven't clicked on any of your latest videos because of these thumbnails and titles. I'm subscribed since your "non-photographic video regarding the illness" and watched a lot of videos about lenses which seems interesting to me, but there were always information what is it in the title. Now I just skipped them, cause I'm not sure what the video is about and I do not usually have time to watch first 3 minutes to figure that out.
    So there's a drawback ... you probably get more views and new subs, but myself as loyal viewer, I do not watch your new videos anymore.

    As you say, without a catchy title, the algorithms are not going to recommend any video. Many of us have been involved in amateur photography for decades but we still look for “solid” but cheap lenses or cameras that might be fun and we can literally play with. Besides, there are many more beginners, learners and experienced, but-not-totally-serious amateurs who will need/enjoy your videos, than obsessives who can’t wait for the latest, newly updated, professional Sony/Nikon/Canon lens of whatever focal length or zoom range to be released, even though they own the previous, highly capable version.

    When you say "APS-C lens," do you mean you don't need to apply the crop factor to the focal length? So, a 27mm APS-C lens on my Sony a6600 has the field of view of a 27mm on an full-frame camera?BTW--I really like your reviews and have bought at least 2 lenses you featured here: The 25mm with the screw-on lens cap (my go-to street lens) and the Samyang 12mm f/2. Now I check your channel before buying a lens to see if you have reviewed it. Your practical "I've used it and this was my experience" approach is so helpful to me when making a purchase decision.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  Місяць тому +1

      You always apply the crop factor. It' just a 27mm APS-C lens won't project an image big enough to cover a full frame lens, or there may be quality issues. You can use a 27mm full frame lens on an APS-C camera, but a 27mm ASP-C lens won't be good on a full frame camera.

    As an editor/producer for a YT channel that actually can save lives (covering diseases and viruses) it is a constant struggle to create titles that have some verbal appeal without being scientifically inaccurate (the thumbnails are often boilerplate, unfortunately). If we get it wrong, not only do the view numbers struggle but the YT algorithm will tell you why: "Compared to previous videos on your channel, people who regularly watch your channel are clicking less on this video’s title or thumbnail. Improving the title or thumbnail of this video might increase viewership, but keep in mind that some topics may just naturally attract a smaller audience." I fully empathize with your dilemma and agree with your reasoning. BTW I did get a deal on a (barely) used Viltrox 27mm at BH. Superb on my A6700.

    I recently discovered this channel because I watch a lot of photography channels and YT displayed your thumbnails to me. I haven't seen any of your stuff that I would consider clickbait, including the example you gave. What I consider clickbait is when someone makes a very interesting thumbnail & title, but the video has absolutely nothing to do with what was in the title. That's when I get pissed off and learn to avoid that UA-camr. Your channel is very interesting and informative and you explain things very clearly.
    I did find one thing a little irritating, though. It is obvious in some of the videos that you are targeting an audience of people on a tight budget and yet every lens is one that wont fit a Canon EF mount. I'm thinking to myself: what are we supposed to toss our DSLRs into the trash? If DSLRs are so obsolete why do they still cost so much even for a beat up used one? 😂😂😂

    I agree and don’t agree. As a consumer if I search for something for research purposes and a video pops up. If I click on you have to understand one important thing is time. Most people believe their time is valuable and want a video they’ve selected by title to be accurate and honest in its presence for viewing. I get your point and can understand trying to reach the audience. So I understand but honesty at the forefront is important in being transparent in what you are showing and opinionizing as a professional. So you have to see it from that side as well. It’s like going to a dealer to look at a car but their is no brand name or model badge being presented to you, and they say hey, we’re glad you are here but we can’t tell you the brand or model until we gone over everything. Would you leave the dealer, or would you stay. Same concept and I think that’s how people see it. I’ve seen multiple of your videos and like them but it is inconvenient sometimes not having the transparency of the product being showcased in your video. I hope you understand what I’m relaying on don’t mind my point of view. I appreciate your videos but I think it something to think about also. Balance and truthfulness to sustain integrity in what you’re doing.

    I understand your position. You have go with the flow, or the algorithm will bury you down. The problem I see with the clickbaity thumbs is that, now that everyone is doing it, they have lost the effect. Every single video (from all creators) is "this is a game changer", or "don't buy this product before you see this video", or "this should be illegal", to a point where nobody believes the titles anymore. It's become a dumb race to find the most impacting words to even the most mundane subjects. Actually, I've been trying to avoid clicking on obviously dishonestly-titled video, and that can be a problem.

    I am not a content creator; I am a typical consumer. However, having worked in PR and advertising, I understand that creating traffic is essential to succeed professionally. Catchy titles are a part of this strategy. Nevertheless, there is a distinct difference between sounding sensationalistic and being misleading. Although I am not a photographic newbie, I like your videos a lot. But if it takes half or the entire video until you mention the name of the lens, which is the key topic of your video, people won't click on your affiliate links but on the unsubscribe button.
