80s teen here. I used to get dressed up to go to the mall and meet friends and yes we all smoked (gave it up at the end of the decade) . Did a lot of roller rink skating in the 80s too but when I was a kid in the 70s, I roller skated outside a lot. I recently bought some roller skates with outdoor wheels and hope to use them soon.

I was born in 80, so yeah the 80s and 90s were a super special time for me. All the things we took for granted and never gave a second thought like playing neighborhood hide and seek til the late hours in Summer or riding our bikes down the hill to rent movies and get candy on the weekend now seem like activities of a bygone era.

We roller skated every weekend in the 80s and 90s. The malls were where it was it, during the Holidays every weekend different schools and churches performed at the mall. The schools had choirs and bands playing Christmas music. Tons of people shopping for presents and winter clothes, just to see that many people in one arra was AMAZING!!! People dressed up just to go to the mall, kids were window shopping laying hints, wanting pocket money for food arcades, etc. It was stressful but a positive stress because it forced you to talk to people, to meet and greet people you hadnt seen in a long time, people werent aa depressed, etc. Teens could get part time jobs at the mall and had friends and learned how to be professional because they learned from older adults and learnt customer service skills. We ALWAYS played outside, no one was worried about kidnapping, we knew it existed but you knew the whole neighborhood. We didnt have fat kids because we were all outdoors.

Class of 87 here, I definitely remember the 80s quite well as a teenager. The biggest difference was the smell. Perfume and cologne was everywhere, especially in the fashion magazines. Everyone drowned themselves in it, yours truly included. I'm shocked that you didn't mention The Ltd, the ultimate store for every girl under 21 in North America in the 80s. Smoking was nasty and ubiquitous. One of my besties picked it up in high school because she didn't want to get fat like her mom. She has had two strokes. And that brings me to my main point. The 80s kind of sucked. Eating disorders were rampant. That movie Stand By Me was fraught with horrific tragedy and scandal and child abuse (Google is your friend). All I ever talked about in high school was how I couldn't wait to grow up and find out what the world would be like in ten years. And I was right. The 90s were way better. And oh, I remember being very lonely before the internet became popular in 1994. People have never been good at communicating unless they are super extroverts.

I grew up in the 80s, and I had the time of my life. The music and movies were awesome and mostly romantic with a few horror and action movies. When MTV came out, my friends and I would turn it on and dance all night whenever we had a sleepover. Teen magazines were the greatest, and I had to almost every magazine out there. The big hair, bright clothes, and accessories were so feminine, and the makeup was even bright. I used to go the roller rink every weekend unless I had a date. The mall was a great place to meet boys, especially GIs, because my Daddy was in the Army. I would get most of nail polish at Spencer's because they had the outrageous colors. I loved dressing Heavy Metal and Punk Rock style, and even Valley Girl style. I loved going to the record store because the teenage guy who worked there had a crush on me and would give me an album or 45 of my favorite bands and song. We did have a lot more respect in the 80s, and if you did anything that kids today do, you could count on your parents' finding out and their consequences for your actions. I also went to the gym and did Areobic videos too. I miss the 80s so much because there was still an innocence there. My friends and I would go to Orange Julis for a treat and the guys telling me that I didn't need to drink a Diet Coke because I wasn't overweight and my best friend telling them that I was a Diabetic. I also miss Bonne Bell 10-0-6 lotion and cosmetics, For Oily Hair Only and Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific shampoo and Impulse body spray. I also miss that calories were not put on anything when you ate out, so you were not ashamed to eat.

The Portland, Oregon mall you refer to is the Lloyd Center (ironically the first shopping mall in the U.S.), built in 1960. It has been going through a tough time due to mismanagement, but it is reviving by way of pop-up shops, and Joe Brown's Caramel Corn is still there! Now, if you had gone to the suburbs southwest of the city Washington Square is a successful, busy and thriving mall that is packed every weekend. Their anchor stores are Macy's, Nordstrom and J.C. Penny. There's even a Tesla dealership.

I was in my 20s in the 80s and I loved it. You could walk into any job you pleased, they were so plentiful, it was safe to go out at night and to travel almost anywhere and I did. I had a marvellous time. Most of the fashions you showed here were teen fashions which like teen fashions of any decade were pretty gross. But fashion for grown ups were so pretty and after the hideous, androgynous 70s, we were able to look feminine again and my blue jeans went in the bin and stayed there. My favourite stores of the 80s that are now gone are Laura Ashley, Readers Feast and Discurio. I still have lots of DVDs of classic movies and TV shows and they aren’t going anywhere. It’s funny how we only had 4 TV channels but there was so much more on. 80s TV was fantastic. The historical drama miniseries was in its hay day and there was so many really good ones. It was a great time to be young and alive all up.

I was born in the late 80s but I’m from a rural town and back then fashion was slow (at least here in Sweden) so I remember all of the 80s fashion and I still used some of it myself in the 90s. The crimped hair and poufy bangs were still a thing in 1990 here ! 😂 if you miss malls I can tell that malls are still popular here in Sweden and companies put so much money into building and renovating shopping centers! We have amazon here now and people have been shopping online since probably like 2005 or so here, but malls are still so so popular in the same way they used to be in the states before! I lived in Utah in 2013 and I miss those days, they were tha last of the olden days I feel like.. I used to go to the mall in my small town and its still there, but now its not as popular and slowly dying 😢 it was the first year on Netflix in the US I think, but we still rented dvds from a vending machine called Redbox because Netflix didnt have much at all to watch, just a small selection!
Anyone remember? 😮 getting older is so much about nostalgia I feel like, now when I’m almost middle age.

As much as computers and social media has its advantages. It just seems like the more we rely upon them the more the soul of an experience or a thing gets taken out. Even the music is auto tuned and pitch corrected. Someone can probably explain it better than I. A lot of the young will never know how it felt. You felt more alive. Maybe that’s why there is more mental illness in our society now.

Love the 80’s. It’s interesting how neon clothing is so associated with the 80’s because it wasn’t that popular where I grew up. I still love a lot of the classic clothing from that time, especially the more feminine blouses with the gathering at the shoulder seams paired with slacks and heels and a thin gold belt. Dynasty TV fashion and bold jewelry. It all seems so much more glamorous compared to today. Going to the mall was a big deal because we had to go to the big city, an all day excursion. Fun times! Adventures in Babysitting was my favorite movie rental back then. We got an Atari for Christmas but I never cared for video games. We didn’t have cable so no MTV but we watched American Bandstand, Soul Train and I still subscribe to ABDancers on UA-cam.

Blockbuster Video came late ‘80s for us, and felt like the end of VHS was nearing, because of it! Before the Blockbuster Video chain siege, we had our neighborhood mom & pop video rental stores, with obscure localized store names, also video rental sections in variety & junk shops, which were not uncommon then, believe it or not. This was an age where shopping small and shopping local (and shopping frequently, where you established a familiarity and/or customer loyalty) were the things you did, no thinking about them or while going about them, and before it was cool or socially “aware” to do, LOL!!!!! Remakes are - and will continue to be - happening because there are no new ideas on the market to squeeze the life out of, “on trend” with the times or not. Yes, I agree, regurgitation has replaced innovation, sadly to a large extent; this coming directly from someone who does NOT look back on any decade or era, wearing rose-tinted glasses!🤓🥸

Absolutely! Australia felt behind the rest of the Western world in some ways (we had to wait *_AGES_* for movies to come out), but ahead in a couple of others- & it kind of felt like the 80's was when our country put itself on the map in a *real* way, with things like the cochlear, & our international sporting achievements (ie. the America's Cup).
In rural Queensland, we also remained well behind our city counterparts, down south- so though I was only born in mid-late '84, the decade kind of lingered here, lol...
