Another 80s fad was the mall. Sure they still exist today but many are closing or turning into something else. In the 80s it was the place to be. You could easily spend all day there and not give it a second thought.

Loved this I’m 54 and the 80’s were a great time to be a teen! You forgot the acid washed jeans, plastic bead necklaces and bracelets, rubber bracelets, neon colors, leg warmers, Love’s Baby Soft, large low slung belts for ladies, rock painted denim jackets, trapper keeper binders, standing up collars, la coste shirts, stretch jeans in crazy colors, hair mousse and gel, sun-in, mix tapes, purple iridescent lip gloss, Lee press on nails, capezio shoes, tee shirts with blazers, I could go on and on. I miss those days !!!! 🫶🏻

I've never met anyone who was a teen or in their early 20's who disliked the 80's. Everyone loved it. Question is,how do we get that back? We really need the 80's spirit now as our world spirals into madness and pointless violence. Pretty soon I'm going to throw my computer and mobile phone in the river as I'm not sure they bring anything good and positive into my life at all.
I was a teenager in the 80's. I'm 51 today and miss those times a lot. My adult children ask my wife and I what was so special about the 80's? We smile and start telling them, they listen in awe.
When asked about the 80's I always say that everything was bright colors, there was music in the streets and everyday seemed to have something new going on...
I'm 20. I never lived in the 80's but I'm a huge 80's fan. I miss socializing in general. Nowadays it's mostly online. The malls are not what they used to be and even if we want to hang out there's barely anywhere fun to go. I hate where the future is going. Everything is getting digitalized there's nothing physical no more. I wish we could go back

I was a baby in the 80's (can't remember much), But I almost remember the ending of the 80's and the 90's beginning, it was good. Everything was good well until 2010, then things became trash, stupid decade it was. This decade of 2020 is just beginning, but I bet the push-back against the stupidity is going to be so strong. I'm going to be that uncle or grand-pa that spoil the kids of the Gen-Z, can you imagine how fun that is going to be.
One word to describe the 80’s “colorful”! Being a kid during that time, everything was so bright and colorful, the makeup, clothing, toys, cartoons, cereal, hair gel, kitchen appliances, music videos, everything! Fashion was fun, acid wash, colorful denim, denim everything! Dads wearing Hawaiian shirts, moms wearing tropical print rompers or matching shirts and shorts. Kids R Us for children’s clothing. Back to School was the time to show off your style looking for the coolest Trapper Keeper and Lisa Frank school supplies. LA Gears and Reebok Pumps were what you hoped for for new shoes, but if you were like me, you got saddle shoes because the 50’s “sock hop” look was making a comeback thanks to movies like Grease, Dirty Dancing, and shows like Happy Days. Recess was spent learning double Dutch, walking on wooden stilts, or hoping you were invited to learn the hand jive with the cool girls blasting the Dirty Dancing soundtrack on a pink Sharp boombox. Getting the newest Boxcar Children, Babysitters Club, Fear Street, or Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark from the Scholastic Book Order form was like Christmas. Saturday morning cartoons were a ritual, if you were really lucky your mom or dad bought the little cereal packs and it was a race to the Fruit Loops, Apple Jacks or Sugar Smacks. Spending the night at the grandparents house involved TV dinners on TV trays watching the Golden Girls. Summers were spent at the pool, riding bikes, pretending to be explorers like Indiana Jones or the Goonies, making friendship bracelets, buying candy with the change in your pocket, trying to stay upright on a pogo stick, roller skates, or whacking your shins with a Skip It. Going to the mall was an experience, it was always busy, bright and fun. We spent nights playing flashlight tag with all of the kids in the neighborhood, elementary age all the way to high schoolers, all were welcome. We went home to eat and out we went again. I’ll forever be stuck in the 80’s!
Miss all those colours and quirkiness. Everything got so drab and colourless these days. Too much 'minimalism'. Technology has gotten way better, but that is just about it. I generally listen to 80s music and older, the last few years, to keep myself 'transported' in those times.

He-Man, Pac-Man, and The Smurfs. That's the early 80s anyway when I was in 2nd and 3rd grade. Mid 80s (4th and 5th grade), we liked those boom boxes, Springsteen, and Axel F. Late 80s (6th and 7th grade), Nintendo (Super Mario bros and Legend of Zelda), Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Chicago, Beastie boys, and RunDMC

I turned 4 in 1980. That was such a great decade! It was probably the last time kids played outside. I remember the music, movies, going to the mall, and all the fads. I had several Swatch watches. What a time to be a kid! I feel bad that my kids missed it.
People didn't stop going outside in the 80s when you were 4 unless there parents allowed them to stay in the house. It was the parents. You weren't allowed in the house. Go out and play is what I was told I don't want to see you until it's dark. Parents today or too soft and they want to keep a leash on their children and they want their children right next to them so their children can clean the house and do stuff that they need them to do instead of them going outside and playing like children. My boys and my daughter played outside all the time I was just like my mother and my grandmother and my father get your butt outside and don't come back till dark. I feel a lot of parents just coodle their children too much anymore and just allow them to stay in the air-conditioned house. And play video games. Eat all kinds of junk food and become obese. And then blame it on America.
What's funny is hearing from a lot of today's teens and twenty-somethings that they wished they grew up in the 1980s. I'm shocked when I meet a friend or colleague's daughter who knows and loves 80s music.
The '80s, by far, the best decade; with honorable mention to the late '70s and early '90s, as the former kickstarted the era, and the latter carried on the spirit for a little while.
God I miss this era!! I never thought I would miss it this much. I can remember the arcades, the mall movie theaters, the music stores, the food courts, and the clothes. The mall was like an extension of school where there were no teachers or authority............ Except the mall cops. And yes, you could spend all day there and go back the next day like it was nothing.
I was 12 in 1980 and 21 in 1989. That was junior high, high school, and college all encapsulated in one decade. 1977 to 1985 was especially fun and great. I love the 80s and miss them dearly.
If I may suggest an honorable mention… shoulder pads! I had a dresser drawer full of nothing but shoulder pads. Sewed them into every piece of clothing I owned, even if it already had shoulder pads. “Only 1? Screw that! Need more!” I could have played in the NFL with my collection.
Shoulder pads for women and 50s biker leathers for men; U.S.-made Perfecto and Excelled leather jackets were brought back by musicians in the late 70s and it peaked with the public in the early 80s.
I just want to cry because the 80s are gone and i want to go back but stuck in the year 2023 as a 46 yr old in the crappiest time in history. My health is declining and i need to go back desperately bc it was the only time i experienced real freedom and happiness. I watch these videos and its soooo bittersweet. Im sad for my 18 yr old daughter that grew up in these dark dark times.
I would have loved to be an 80’s teen! I remember seeing teens at the mall back then and wishing I could wear their styles. I was a 90’s teen and it was great but I can’t help feeling like the 80’s was more magical
I was born in 68, so teenager throughout the 80's we were so lucky to be young in this era!! We had real childhoods my parents couldn't keep me and my sister in the house, I don't envy today's youth I feel they are being cheated big time! If I ever get a time machine I will swing by and pick you up and we will go back!! Just kidding, Peace to you......
It was hard being a teenager in the 80s. There was pressure to put out, if you wanted to grow up to be a wife and mother you were gross, the styles sucked if you weren’t of average height, you were expected to come home after school to get dinner started because your Mom was working outside the home or to babysit your younger siblings. You couldn’t plan to be a full-time employee at your grocery or fast food job because it wasn’t a real job, you were under intense pressure to get into debt to go to post-secondary school.
And don’t forget we have the baby boomers to thank for creating almost everything in the 80’s. As Gen X we forget about our parents’ contribution to the greatest decade.
@@anthonylong5870 I especially loved the comedy/horror movies of the 80s, seemed to be the best era for that genre. I still own not one, but TWO pair of Bugle Boy parachute pants! They still fit a year ago, but I put on a few pounds last year, going to have to lose a few before I can fit into those 28 waist pants again but not likely at my age. June 25, 2009, my son's grandmother came to visit and for some reason I decided to put on my black parachute pants and my favorite vintage Michael Jackson "Thriller" shirt (I have more than one!) that morning. We took her to see sites around Palm Springs, like the wonderful Air Museum of WWII planes. That afternoon, I started noticing people looking at my shirt and having strange expressions on their faces. When one lady broke down and cried, I finally had to ask, "WHAT happened??" I was told the horrible news that the King of Pop had died. People assumed I was dressed that way because of the event, but no, I decided to wear that because I was listening to "Thriller" while getting ready to go to Palm Springs for the day. I had no idea.

Yes! The 1980s were my elementary school yrs and some of the most memorable times were spent during summer school trips. Every time I go back and see the school I can't believe how fast the last 30+ years have past.
The 80s was a wonderful time to grow up. Actual music on MTV, listening to Casey Kasem trying to record your favorite songs, hanging out at the mall with friends. Like Eddie Money sang, "I wanna go back and do it all over"
Funny how just this afternoon I was thinking of that song while walking past the local high school, and here I see your comment. I don't really want to go back, but sometimes that feeling comes up.
I play that song frequently, and I often catch myself singing it even when I’m not playing it. Every single word. I really do want to go back. Back when that song came out I sort of understood what he was talking about but now, it makes me feel that sad sentimental almost grief for the Times gone by.

I remember spending the entire day there and never getting tired. Every store was interesting and we had to do every single one of them. Some stores twice. By the time Kevin Smith’s ‘Mall Rats’ came out, the decline of the mall culture was already starting.
We had a large Arcade in our mall, it was the place to be, I would always see a friend or a classmate from school walking through the mall after school or on the weekends.
Remember when cruising the main drag with your friends was fun and not loitering like it is today? My young work colleagues don't have a clue when I talk about our 80s activities, a time before the easy violence, internet, and mass surveillance they grew up in. When pre-mp3 digital music, radio, and interacting with other kids IRL in social settings like arcades and the mall was the norm.
As an 80's kid, my favorite childhood memory was my sticker collection. It was so fun to find another scratch n sniff, Sandylion, or a new design in the Hallmark shop in the mall. Also, trading with friends or with other kids in different places. I am fortunate to still have my albums and unopened packs. I also loved buying charms for my plastic necklaces and bracelets. I have so many fond memories of, hanging out with friends, music, clothing, to be a contestant on Double Dare, are just a few of my wonderful memories. In the later part of the 80's when I was in middle school, shopping for clothing brands like ESPRIT, LA GEAR, Guess, and Benetton to name a few. As well as the white and pink can of Aqua Net and Liz Claiborne perfume are so nostalgic. I could write for hours about all my memories of being an 80's kid. It was a special time, I will always cherish.

I turned 18 in 1980. I joined the Air Force in April of 81 and spent 3 years living in Spain from 83 to the end of 85. Those were the best years of my life. What a party!!
I graduated high school in 1982. Brings back so many great memories… I’m Hispanic and everyone got along. Not so many politically or racially divided. Hanging out in person was normal.
Born in 1970. Electronica really found its footing in the 80s. I still occasionally enjoy some of those groups - Kraftwerk, Ministry, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, the Normal, Vicious Pink. And so many more, that were not part of pop radio, that I only discovered through going to various music stores and asking random guys who dressed in Punk/New Wave styles. I encourage kids who are interested in the 80s to rediscover that whole deep pool of non-popular music. There are some gems to be mined.
I can remember in high-school, as what I'd guess you'd call an alternative kid, that for my group referring to someone as "top-40" was an insult. After 1984 or so, radio music changed and most of my bands would never be on the radio.
@CR. I actually have a "45" of "We Are the World". (I got it at a garage sale, but still.) My high school was boring, didn't use a pop song at all. They just went with the "1812 Overture"...but I've always liked that one too, so it was still good. :)
I graduated in the mid 80's myself. A girl took 'Kool & The Gang's' tune "Cherish" changed the lyrics to fit for a graduation, and that became our class song...

I thought about this a lot in the mid- to late 90's as alternative took over. All I can say is the second I heard the Spice Girls in the summer of 97, I knew, finally, the angry harsh sound was over.
I was an 80s and 90's kid and those were the best years of my life. I miss those days. They were so much better than these crappy doom and gloom days. These videos take me back to happier days.
In the early 80's it wasn't VHS it was beta. And the images and sound was way better than a VHS. I still have my betamax stereo and a betacam. It costed way too much at the time so I bought one from a surplus a couple of years ago. The vcr alone costs me 1200$ in 1987. The camera was in 15k at the time. That's why I waited till it was affordable (still cost 600$ with a cannon lens and viewfinder)
I'm 57 and am feeling nostalgic to the max watching these 80s montages and remembering better, simpler times. I miss the innocence, and those amazing, magical 80s summers.
Love this. I was a kid in the 80s, and it was the best time to grow up. My bus driver played Sir Mix-a-Lot on a boombox on our bus (because the radio was broken, of course). My older sister taught me how to play Pac-Man. All my friends had Swatches. And there was so much hairspray in the bathroom that it was probably a fire hazard!
I think the 80s and 90s were the best decades to be a kid. I turned 40 this year and I tell my teenager how awesome it was. He rolls his eyes of course. What an awful time to grow up now. I’d love to go back!
Grew up and graduated high school in the mid 80’s. Here’s some more 80’s fads… -Penny loafer shoes (the come back from the 50’s) -“10-speeds” (bicycles with 5 low and 5 high gears). -Asahi white boy’s tennis shoes -Reebok tennis shoes (came out mid 80’s) -Member’s Only jackets -Beta max VCR’s (way less popular than VHS VCR’s). -Atari and Intelevision TV game consoles. (Crude Precursors to PlayStation and XBOX of today and only cool kids had them). -“On TV” and “Select TV” (Single channel paid TV station, requiring a small antenna and decoder box to watch movies. They were pre-multichannel cable companies, without the cable yet. You were a “cool kid” if you had ON or SELECT TV). -Bartles & James “wine coolers.” (Everybody wanted to be seen drinking one at parties). -Full service gas stations (now only in New Jersey as mandated by their state law. They used to be all over the place in the 80’s). -Commodore-64 computer. (Crude 64K memory computer you plugged into a TV and everybody had to have one). -Levi 501’s jeans -“OP” (Ocean Pacific) brand T-shirts and shorts. -Bolt brand T-shirts (Competitor to OP brand) -Van’s slip-on checkerboard shoes (huge fad back in the 80’s). -Boy’s Puka shell necklaces (Orange and LA Counties) -Aqua Net brand can of hairspray in girl’s lockers in high school. -Actual “shop classes” in 99% of public high schools (auto shop, wood shop, metal shop, ceramics etc…) -“Baby on Board” signs (literally in EVERY car on the road of parents that had a kid). -Last but not least…. The “fad” where most people actually WANTED a job back then. 😂
I loved growing up in the 80’s. Saw Prince & Judas Priest both when I was 13, walked everywhere with my friends & a boom box, Swatch watches and Hypercolor clothes and we all had a freedom that I don’t think any other generation before or since has experienced.
I still have 4 Hypercolor shirts. They still work. The trick was to hand wash them in cold water, and let dry on a hanger, not in the dryer or on the clothesline in the sun. That would ruin them. (Jan Griffiths).

I was born in 82 and remember all these fads. I had two older siblings so naturally I was exposed to this stuff at a young age. These times were so innocent and fun. Such a contrast to the mean, nasty world we live in today.

We didnt disown family & friends just because they had differing political views. We didnt get offended just because someone hurt our feelings. We didnt need safe spaces & participation trophies. We knew not everyone was equal at everything. Some people were better learners, some people were better at sports, some people were more talented & some people were more mechanically inclined. Everyone had somethings they were not good at & we knew that life isnt always fair. Today if you just look at someone sideways they get offended. The 80's was definately way better.
I was born in the 80s and spent the first 5 years of my life in the decade. I have incredibly fond memories of that era. For me, being a kid back then just felt so free and secure. The country was in a pretty good place overall. I had a good family and good friends. I can only describe how I remember feeling as a sort of prevailing optimism. The 80s and 90s were the last two decades of an era in American culture that really kicked off after WW2. Of course 9-11 changed everything and today our country feels like a bit of a contradictory and convoluted mess to me. The 80s weren't perfect by any means, but I do miss that sense of optimism and faith in America that I felt then. Much of that is gone for me these days, though I still find reasons to hope. I think that feeling of nostalgia and the memory of days that seemed so simple and good is what makes the 80s live on in our hearts and minds.
as a person who is barely a millennial almost a Gen X I know what you mean, back then we didnt look at a persons race as being diff. we just seen them as a new friend, we all just wanted to have fun, unfortunately bad politics from both sides screwed it all up. Now everyone is racist even if they are not.

Very cool review of the 80's. As one who was a teenager during that decade, I have memories of everything you mentioned. There were many times I spent my lunch money on Pac-Man. I got my first Rubik's Cube in 6th grade, followed closely by the cheat book you pictured. The break dancers had there cardboard and boom box on the stage before school every day. I owned my share of boom boxes, which I used to make mix-tapes of all my favorite music from Bryan Adams to Journey to Chicago to Bon Jovi!
That's when making a mix tape took a lot of work. It wasn't like my kids just simply downloading songs. You had to wait for them to come on the radio and hope the DJ didn't talk during the first part of it. Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories!
I grew up in the 80s myself. Fads were definitely an important part of what us kids back then had interest in. Boom boxes and breakdancing was big when I was in 4th and 5th grade, in 1985 and 1986. Journey, Chicago, and Bon Jovi were big. We also liked Springsteen, Duran Duran, and RunDMC. Rubix cubes I remember from a bit further back like around 2nd grade, in the early 80s. As said at 3:48, using the words of what was "In" and "Out" were common terminologies. What music was in or out, what clothes were in or out. When I was in 6th grade (in 1987), we even technically had the "In" group and the "Out" group, the In group of course being the popular crowd and Out group not so. It was all the typical playground thing. The In group kept up wirh the latest fashions, knew the latest dance moves (definitely were best at them), were the best at sports, and were the kids everyone wanted to be like. After the 80s, I remember that the terminology sorta switched from what's in or what's out over to in the 90s, it was what's hot or what's not. I heard alot of that when I was in highschool in the early 90s. Metallica, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam were the groups we liked then.
Yes. That mixtape. My brother, cousins, and I used to make mixtapes on the regular. My brother was so good at making mixtapes, he even knew how to open and repair cassettes that had their ribbons eaten by the cassette player.
Growing up (primarily) in the 80's, I can honestly say; between the 1970's & present-day/decade generation(s), I would *NEVER* even _think_ to "trade" (if I could) my youth experiences of the 80's for *any other* decade/generation! In my humble opinion,...the 80's had the *GREATEST* overall experiences (relatively speaking).
i personally lump the 80's adn 90's together. being born in 1979 i expereinced both as a child but only one as an adult (the tail end of the 90's). and while the two decades did have some key differences the 90's and 80's had one key similarity; Change. the world had the most massive cahnges during the 80's and 90's. we saw computers go from being a neat albeit uncommon business tool , to computers being in almost every house by 1999 . we saw the internet go from birth in 87 to being a full blown cultural shifting invention by the late 90's. we saw records turn to cassettes and cassettes turn to Cd's we saw VHS hit it's all time high , and we saw it's death and the birth of DVD's. and sure while cellphones and smart phones exploded culture in the 2010's the 80's and 90's really prepared us for that shift to be "always online".
I remember New Year's Eve, 1989. I had graduated high school earlier that year. I was watching the clock tick to midnight as I stood in the bathroom by myself, just having a quiet moment away from the festivities. I knew things were going to be different, I just didn't yet know how different. I was actually very sad that the 80s were ending, and I still haven't fully recovered. The 90s had their great times too but things were never quite the same again.
Loved the 80s, best decade of my life, met and married my beloved soul mate. Best music, movies, best hair n fashions n jewelry, life was so much better…. I’d happily go back, my husband is now in heaven and I miss him and the 80s so much. 💔😢
I was born in 1963 so I was a teenager during the late 70's to late 80's. We had the best music! We had the best bands! The best T.V. shows! We didn't wear helmets to ride our bikes! We didn't get a "Time Out" (we got a whack instead)! We respected those older than us! We said "Thank You" when someone held the door open for us! Compared to today, we were living in PARADISE!!!

Apparently there's a law in my state now that kids (under the age of 16) have to wear a helmet when riding a bike. A law like that would have gone over like a fart in church when I was a kid in the '80s. I never saw anyone wear a helmet just to ride a bike back then; not once, not ever. We didn't wear seat belts in cars either, and we rode in the open bed of a pickup truck whenever we wanted to, even on the interstate.
@@MaximRecoil All us kids would ride in the back of a pick up truck all ages and no one was worried for our safety. It was a blast in the summer since we had no air conditioning in our car. When I was small my dad let me sit on his lap in the car and he would let me hold the steering wheel every now and then.

I was 14 in 1980, so I grew up partly in the 80's and I remember so many of these fads. Though I never had parachute pants or a swatch watch. I did have a Rubik's Cube. When MTV premiered and for several years after my Mom and I watched a lot. That was back when MTV was all about music and not reality shows.

Back in 2003, I bought 8 Serigraph (silkscreened by hand, not mass-produced lithos) Nagel posters, all signed and numbered by the artist. These originally sold for @ $2000 each in the early 1980s, but have since fallen out of style. I found these at an estate sale of a Palm Springs rich person's mansion who was in the movie industry. They are all beautifully triple-matted and have never been out of the frames since they came from the Malke Sage gallery. No one else wanted them at the sale, so I stole them at $20 each. One is a special image that Nagel hand painted extra details, and only 10 were made. Nagel died in 1983, so he won't be making more. I keep hoping his art will appear on "Stranger Things" or some other show set in the 1980s. His art was very popular back then, and I still think they are beautiful!
I am around the same age as you so I feel I grew up in the 1970's but became an adult in the 1980's. Loved parachute pants and the reason they are not back in style is because the were awesome. The were super comfortable, did not stain or really get dirty, and they looked good and were breathable. Make something that checks all the boxes and look out...they will get rid of it very quickly.
I was more late 70s, early 80s. Lot of good memories. Never any parachute pants or Swatch watches. It was Timex or nothing (takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin').
@@LazyIRanch Nagel's art is beautiful, and I do have the "Rio" album.. I still have a pair of Bugle Boy parachute pants also. And a Swatch watch collection with 2 watches featuring art by Keith Haring. Those watches are worth a fortune now. I'm glad I got them back in the 80s. (Jan Griffiths).
I still remember the amazement I felt when I saw my first Pac Man arcade machine... The colors, the sound, the layout, it was so unique coming from Pong, Space Invaders and Breakout.

Some fashion fads were day glo, shirts with stitches on the outside, hypercolor t-shirts, white shirts with black lettering with phrases like 'choose life', and Japanese flag shirts. Clothing had lots of pockets, zippers, and buckles. I almost forgot skinny ties, overalls, suspenders, and knit ties.
I really miss the 80’s! The big shopping malls, the great movies, the fun music, the video arcades. Pretty much everything! I wish I could travel through time to that era, and stay there forever!
Oh, that would be lovely. My grandfather passed in 1970 when I was only one year old, so I never got to know him. After he died, my grandmother moved in with us until she passed in 1986. I still miss her so very much! ♥️

I visited NYC at the end of 1979, and you're so right. The Twin Towers were still there, of course, and I took many pictures of them (glad I have them now). I went to Times Square to celebrate the start of the 80s, and saw the ball drop from 1979 to 1980. It was a great visit, and want to return to see the 9/11 memorial. (Jan Griffiths).
I still have and use one of those suitcase sized boomboxes I bought in the early 80s ('82 or '83). It even has lights in it, dual cassette, an equalizer, awesome speakers, and can be plugged in as well as use batteries. I use it in the house now as my radio, but the cassette decks work fine. They even still record. I have a lot of cassettes still, and still play and enjoy them. (Jan Griffiths).

Graduated high school in 1989. Six months later the 90’s officially began and the world changed over night. Nothing can compare to the 80’s. It was the best time to be young, especially in Southern California
I graduated in 86 so I can relate. I remember seeing a change from the '80s culture spring 93. In recent years a lot of people who study sociology and things have said that sort have come to agree that everything changed completely by 93. I'm thinking about it it's true
We used to have a sit down Pac-Man game in our local Pizza Hut. The arcade version was great but the Atari 2600 version left much to be desired. My brother and I both had boomboxes, very seldom did either one of us take ours outside the house because they would eat through batteries like crazy. Great memories of the 1980's.

The 1980s will always be the greatest decade ever! I was born in 1994 but I was I was a teen or in my 20s during this era. They had the best food, music, tv shows, movies, toys, video games, makeup, hair, fashion and hope and optimism! This was a great trip down memory lane. I wish I had a time machine to go back to the '80s!

Another 80s fad was the mall. Sure they still exist today but many are closing or turning into something else. In the 80s it was the place to be. You could easily spend all day there and not give it a second thought.

You forgot the acid washed jeans, plastic bead necklaces and bracelets, rubber bracelets, neon colors, leg warmers, Love’s Baby Soft, large low slung belts for ladies, rock painted denim jackets, trapper keeper binders, standing up collars, la coste shirts, stretch jeans in crazy colors, hair mousse and gel, sun-in, mix tapes, purple iridescent lip gloss, Lee press on nails, capezio shoes, tee shirts with blazers, I could go on and on. I miss those days !!!! 🫶🏻

I've never met anyone who was a teen or in their early 20's who disliked the 80's. Everyone loved it. Question is,how do we get that back? We really need the 80's spirit now as our world spirals into madness and pointless violence. Pretty soon I'm going to throw my computer and mobile phone in the river as I'm not sure they bring anything good and positive into my life at all.

I'm 20. I never lived in the 80's but I'm a huge 80's fan. I miss socializing in general. Nowadays it's mostly online. The malls are not what they used to be and even if we want to hang out there's barely anywhere fun to go. I hate where the future is going. I was a baby in the 80's (can't remember much), But I almost remember the ending of the 80's and the 90's beginning, it was good. Everything was good well until 2010, then things became trash, stupid decade it was. This decade of 2020 is just beginning, but I bet the push-back against the stupidity is going to be so strong.

One word to describe the 80’s “colorful”! Being a kid during that time, everything was so bright and colorful, the makeup, clothing, toys, cartoons, cereal, hair gel, kitchen appliances, music videos, everything! Fashion was fun, acid wash, colorful denim, denim everything! Dads wearing Hawaiian shirts, moms wearing tropical print rompers or matching shirts and shorts. Kids R Us for children’s clothing. Back to School was the time to show off your style looking for the coolest Trapper Keeper and Lisa Frank school supplies. LA Gears and Reebok Pumps were what you hoped for for new shoes, but if you were like me, you got saddle shoes because the 50’s “sock hop” look was making a comeback thanks to movies like Grease, Dirty Dancing, and shows like Happy Days. Recess was spent learning double Dutch, walking on wooden stilts, or hoping you were invited to learn the hand jive with the cool girls blasting the Dirty Dancing soundtrack on a pink Sharp boombox. Getting the newest Boxcar Children, Babysitters Club, Fear Street, or Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark from the Scholastic Book Order form was like Christmas. Saturday morning cartoons were a ritual, if you were really lucky your mom or dad bought the little cereal packs and it was a race to the Fruit Loops, Apple Jacks or Sugar Smacks. Spending the night at the grandparents house involved TV dinners on TV trays watching the Golden Girls. Summers were spent at the pool, riding bikes, pretending to be explorers like Indiana Jones or the Goonies, making friendship bracelets, buying candy with the change in your pocket, trying to stay upright on a pogo stick, roller skates, or whacking your shins with a Skip It. Going to the mall was an experience, it was always busy, bright and fun. We spent nights playing flashlight tag with all of the kids in the neighborhood, elementary age all the way to high schoolers, all were welcome. We went home to eat and out we went again. I’ll forever be stuck in the 80’s!

I turned 4 in 1980. That was such a great decade! It was probably the last time kids played outside. I remember the music, movies, going to the mall, and all the fads. I had several Swatch watches. What a time to be a kid! I feel bad that my kids missed it.

People didn't stop going outside in the 80s when you were 4 unless there parents allowed them to stay in the house. It was the parents. You weren't allowed in the house. Go out and play is what I was told I don't want to see you until it's dark. Parents today or too soft and they want to keep a leash on their children and they want their children right next to them so their children can clean the house and do stuff that they need them to do instead of them going outside and playing like children. My boys and my daughter played outside all the time I was just like my mother and my grandmother and my father get your butt outside and don't come back till dark. I feel a lot of parents just coodle their children too much anymore and just allow them to stay in the air-conditioned house. And play video games. Eat all kinds of junk food and become obese. And then blame it on America.

What's funny is hearing from a lot of today's teens and twenty-somethings that they wished they grew up in the 1980s. I'm shocked when I meet a friend or colleague's daughter who knows and loves 80s music.
The '80s, by far, the best decade; with honorable mention to the late '70s and early '90s, as the former kickstarted the era, and the latter carried on the spirit for a little while.
God I miss this era!! I never thought I would miss it this much. I can remember the arcades, the mall movie theaters, the music stores, the food courts, and the clothes. The mall was like an extension of school where there were no teachers or authority............ Except the mall cops. And yes, you could spend all day there and go back the next day like it was nothing.
I remember the Arcades with those great original games, but they weren't always safe and friendly places.
I was 12 in 1980 and 21 in 1989. That was junior high, high school, and college all encapsulated in one decade. 1977 to 1985 was especially fun and great. I love the 80s and miss them dearly.

If I may suggest an honorable mention… shoulder pads! I had a dresser drawer full of nothing but shoulder pads. Sewed them into every piece of clothing I owned, even if it already had shoulder pads. “Only 1? Screw that! Need more!” I could have played in the NFL with my collection.

We had real childhoods my parents couldn't keep me and my sister in the house, I don't envy today's youth I feel they are being cheated big time! It was hard being a teenager in the 80s. There was pressure to put out, if you wanted to grow up to be a wife and mother you were gross, the styles sucked if you weren’t of average height, you were expected to come home after school to get dinner started because your Mom was working outside the home or to babysit your younger siblings. You couldn’t plan to be a full-time employee at your grocery or fast food job because it wasn’t a real job, you were under intense pressure to get into debt to go to post-secondary school.

I still own not one, but TWO pair of Bugle Boy parachute pants! They still fit a year ago, but I put on a few pounds last year, going to have to lose a few before I can fit into those 28 waist pants again but not likely at my age.
June 25, 2009, my son's grandmother came to visit and for some reason I decided to put on my black parachute pants and my favorite vintage Michael Jackson "Thriller" shirt (I have more than one!) that morning.
We took her to see sites around Palm Springs, like the wonderful Air Museum of WWII planes. That afternoon, I started noticing people looking at my shirt and having strange expressions on their faces. When one lady broke down and cried, I finally had to ask, "WHAT happened??"
I was told the horrible news that the King of Pop had died. People assumed I was dressed that way because of the event, but no, I decided to wear that because I was listening to "Thriller" while getting ready to go to Palm Springs for the day. I had no idea.

Funny how just this afternoon I was thinking of that song while walking past the local high school, and here I see your comment. I don't really want to go back, but sometimes that feeling comes up.
I play that song frequently, and I often catch myself singing it even when I’m not playing it. Every single word. I really do want to go back. Back when that song came out I sort of understood what he was talking about but now, it makes me feel that sad sentimental almost grief for the Times gone by.

I remember spending the entire day there and never getting tired. Every store was interesting and we had to do every single one of them. Some stores twice. By the time Kevin Smith’s ‘Mall Rats’ came out, the decline of the mall culture was already starting.
We had a large Arcade in our mall, it was the place to be, I would always see a friend or a classmate from school walking through the mall after school or on the weekends.
Tell them to watch the original Dawn of the Dead (1978) for how malls looked.
As someone who turned 10 in 1980, this was definitely my decade. My favorite thing about the 80s was the arcades and the movies.
Remember when cruising the main drag with your friends was fun and not loitering like it is today? My young work colleagues don't have a clue when I talk about our 80s activities, a time before the easy violence, internet, and mass surveillance they grew up in. When pre-mp3 digital music, radio, and interacting with other kids IRL in social settings like arcades and the mall was the norm.
As an 80's kid, my favorite childhood memory was my sticker collection. It was so fun to find another scratch n sniff, Sandylion, or a new design in the Hallmark shop in the mall. Also, trading with friends or with other kids in different places. I am fortunate to still have my albums and unopened packs. I also loved buying charms for my plastic necklaces and bracelets. I have so many fond memories of, hanging out with friends, music, clothing, to be a contestant on Double Dare, are just a few of my wonderful memories. In the later part of the 80's when I was in middle school, shopping for clothing brands like ESPRIT, LA GEAR, Guess, and Benetton to name a few. As well as the white and pink can of Aqua Net and Liz Claiborne perfume are so nostalgic. I could write for hours about all my memories of being an 80's kid. It was a special time, I will always cherish.

I turned 18 in 1980. I joined the Air Force in April of 81 and spent 3 years living in Spain from 83 to the end of 85. Those were the best years of my life. What a party!!

Born in 1970. Electronica really found its footing in the 80s. I still occasionally enjoy some of those groups - Kraftwerk, Ministry, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, the Normal, Vicious Pink. And so many more, that were not part of pop radio, that I only discovered through going to various music stores and asking random guys who dressed in Punk/New Wave styles. I encourage kids who are interested in the 80s to rediscover that whole deep pool of non-popular music. There are some gems to be mined.
I can remember in high-school, as what I'd guess you'd call an alternative kid, that for my group referring to someone as "top-40" was an insult. After 1984 or so, radio music changed and most of my bands would never be on the radio.

Overall, 80s music was HAPPY music. That’s why I liked it so much and one reason why it has held up so well.
I thought about this a lot in the mid- to late 90's as alternative took over. All I can say is the second I heard the Spice Girls in the summer of 97, I knew, finally, the angry harsh sound was over.

Now you can get them on DVD and Blu-ray. That's what I did. I still have a Betamax and a VHS that both work fine. Tapes for both. (Jan Griffiths).
In the early 80's it wasn't VHS it was beta. And the images and sound was way better than a VHS. I still have my betamax stereo and a betacam. It costed way too much at the time so I bought one from a surplus a couple of years ago. The vcr alone costs me 1200$ in 1987.
The camera was in 15k at the time. That's why I waited till it was affordable (still cost 600$ with a cannon lens and viewfinder)

Love this. I was a kid in the 80s, and it was the best time to grow up. My bus driver played Sir Mix-a-Lot on a boombox on our bus (because the radio was broken, of course). My older sister taught me how to play Pac-Man. All my friends had Swatches. And there was so much hairspray in the bathroom that it was probably a fire hazard!

Grew up and graduated high school in the mid 80’s. Here’s some more 80’s fads…
-Penny loafer shoes (the come back from the 50’s)
-“10-speeds” (bicycles with 5 low and 5 high gears).
-Asahi white boy’s tennis shoes
-Reebok tennis shoes (came out mid 80’s)
-Member’s Only jackets
-Beta max VCR’s (way less popular than VHS VCR’s).
-Atari and Intelevision TV game consoles. (Crude Precursors to PlayStation and XBOX of today and only cool kids had them).
-“On TV” and “Select TV” (Single channel paid TV station, requiring a small antenna and decoder box to watch movies. They were pre-multichannel cable companies, without the cable yet. You were a “cool kid” if you had ON or SELECT TV).
-Bartles & James “wine coolers.” (Everybody wanted to be seen drinking one at parties).
-Full service gas stations (now only in New Jersey as mandated by their state law. They used to be all over the place in the 80’s).
-Commodore-64 computer. (Crude 64K memory computer you plugged into a TV and everybody had to have one).
-Levi 501’s jeans
-“OP” (Ocean Pacific) brand T-shirts and shorts.
-Bolt brand T-shirts (Competitor to OP brand)
-Van’s slip-on checkerboard shoes (huge fad back in the 80’s).
-Boy’s Puka shell necklaces (Orange and LA Counties)
-Aqua Net brand can of hairspray in girl’s lockers in high school.
-Actual “shop classes” in 99% of public high schools (auto shop, wood shop, metal shop, ceramics etc…)
-“Baby on Board” signs (literally in EVERY car on the road of parents that had a kid).
-Last but not least…. The “fad” where most people actually WANTED a job back then. 😂

I loved growing up in the 80’s. Saw Prince & Judas Priest both when I was 13, walked everywhere with my friends & a boom box, Swatch watches and Hypercolor clothes and we all had a freedom that I don’t think any other generation before or since has experienced.
I still have 4 Hypercolor shirts. They still work. The trick was to hand wash them in cold water, and let dry on a hanger, not in the dryer or on the clothesline in the sun. That would ruin them. (Jan Griffiths).

I was born in 82 and remember all these fads. I had two older siblings so naturally I was exposed to this stuff at a young age. These times were so innocent and fun. Such a contrast to the mean, nasty world we live in today.

We didnt disown family & friends just because they had differing political views. We didnt get offended just because someone hurt our feelings. We didnt need safe spaces & participation trophies. We knew not everyone was equal at everything. Some people were better learners, some people were better at sports, some people were more talented & some people were more mechanically inclined. Everyone had somethings they were not good at & we knew that life isnt always fair. Today if you just look at someone sideways they get offended. The 80's was definately way better.

I was born in the 80s and spent the first 5 years of my life in the decade. I have incredibly fond memories of that era. For me, being a kid back then just felt so free and secure. The country was in a pretty good place overall. I had a good family and good friends. I can only describe how I remember feeling as a sort of prevailing optimism. The 80s and 90s were the last two decades of an era in American culture that really kicked off after WW2. Of course 9-11 changed everything and today our country feels like a bit of a contradictory and convoluted mess to me. The 80s weren't perfect by any means, but I do miss that sense of optimism and faith in America that I felt then. Much of that is gone for me these days, though I still find reasons to hope. I think that feeling of nostalgia and the memory of days that seemed so simple and good is what makes the 80s live on in our hearts and minds.
as a person who is barely a millennial almost a Gen X I know what you mean, back then we didnt look at a persons race as being diff. we just seen them as a new friend, we all just wanted to have fun, unfortunately bad politics from both sides screwed it all up.

Very cool review of the 80's. As one who was a teenager during that decade, I have memories of everything you mentioned. There were many times I spent my lunch money on Pac-Man. I got my first Rubik's Cube in 6th grade, followed closely by the cheat book you pictured. The break dancers had there cardboard and boom box on the stage before school every day. I owned my share of boom boxes, which I used to make mix-tapes of all my favorite music from Bryan Adams to Journey to Chicago to Bon Jovi!
That's when making a mix tape took a lot of work. It wasn't like my kids just simply downloading songs. You had to wait for them to come on the radio and hope the DJ didn't talk during the first part of it. Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories!
I grew up in the 80s myself. Fads were definitely an important part of what us kids back then had interest in. Boom boxes and breakdancing was big when I was in 4th and 5th grade, in 1985 and 1986. Journey, Chicago, and Bon Jovi were big. We also liked Springsteen, Duran Duran, and RunDMC.
Rubix cubes I remember from a bit further back like around 2nd grade, in the early 80s.
As said at 3:48, using the words of what was "In" and "Out" were common terminologies. What music was in or out, what clothes were in or out. When I was in 6th grade (in 1987), we even technically had the "In" group and the "Out" group, the In group of course being the popular crowd and Out group not so. It was all the typical playground thing. The In group kept up wirh the latest fashions, knew the latest dance moves (definitely were best at them), were the best at sports, and were the kids everyone wanted to be like.
After the 80s, I remember that the terminology sorta switched from what's in or what's out over to in the 90s, it was what's hot or what's not. I heard alot of that when I was in highschool in the early 90s. Metallica, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam were the groups we liked then.
Yes. That mixtape. My brother, cousins, and I used to make mixtapes on the regular. My brother was so good at making mixtapes, he even knew how to open and repair cassettes that had their ribbons eaten by the cassette player.

Growing up (primarily) in the 80's, I can honestly say; between the 1970's & present-day/decade generation(s), I would *NEVER* even _think_ to "trade" (if I could) my youth experiences of the 80's for *any other* decade/generation! In my humble opinion,...the 80's had the *GREATEST* overall experiences (relatively speaking).
for me it was the 90s. But that is not to say I wouldn't go back just to relive it. I was born in 82, so the 80s was a blur to me.

i personally lump the 80's adn 90's together. being born in 1979 i expereinced both as a child but only one as an adult (the tail end of the 90's). and while the two decades did have some key differences the 90's and 80's had one key similarity; Change. the world had the most massive cahnges during the 80's and 90's. we saw computers go from being a neat albeit uncommon business tool , to computers being in almost every house by 1999 . we saw the internet go from birth in 87 to being a full blown cultural shifting invention by the late 90's. we saw records turn to cassettes and cassettes turn to Cd's we saw VHS hit it's all time high , and we saw it's death and the birth of DVD's. and sure while cellphones and smart phones exploded culture in the 2010's the 80's and 90's really prepared us for that shift to be "always online".
My sons are both in their 30s and they both agree that the best time to have been a teenager was when "Mom was!". 😁

I remember New Year's Eve, 1989. I had graduated high school earlier that year. I was watching the clock tick to midnight as I stood in the bathroom by myself, just having a quiet moment away from the festivities. I knew things were going to be different, I just didn't yet know how different. I was actually very sad that the 80s were ending, and I still haven't fully recovered. The 90s had their great times too but things were never quite the same again.

Apparently there's a law in my state now that kids (under the age of 16) have to wear a helmet when riding a bike. A law like that would have gone over like a fart in church when I was a kid in the '80s. I never saw anyone wear a helmet just to ride a bike back then; not once, not ever.
We didn't wear seat belts in cars either, and we rode in the open bed of a pickup truck whenever we wanted to, even on the interstate.
@@MaximRecoil All us kids would ride in the back of a pick up truck all ages and no one was worried for our safety. It was a blast in the summer since we had no air conditioning in our car. When I was small my dad let me sit on his lap in the car and he would let me hold the steering wheel every now and then.

Graduated in 1987, remember all these fads and items. I had three pair of pari chute pants, gray, red, and black. Had a big boom box. I will always remember the generation and I'll always be proud of it. Thank you so much for showing this video. Class of 87 all the way.
I was 14 in 1980, so I grew up partly in the 80's and I remember so many of these fads. Though I never had parachute pants or a swatch watch. I did have a Rubik's Cube. When MTV premiered and for several years after my Mom and I watched a lot. That was back when MTV was all about music and not reality shows.
I still own not one but TWO pair of Bugle Boy parachute pants! I love those things, they're comfortable so I'm not sure why they haven't come back around.
I'm really hoping that the art of Patric Nagel comes back into vogue. He's the artist who did the Duran Duran album cover for "Rio" and lots of classy nudes for Playboy.
Back in 2003, I bought 8 Serigraph (silkscreened by hand, not mass-produced lithos) Nagel posters, all signed and numbered by the artist. These originally sold for @ $2000 each in the early 1980s, but have since fallen out of style.
I found these at an estate sale of a Palm Springs rich person's mansion who was in the movie industry. They are all beautifully triple-matted and have never been out of the frames since they came from the Malke Sage gallery. No one else wanted them at the sale, so I stole them at $20 each. One is a special image that Nagel hand painted extra details, and only 10 were made. Nagel died in 1983, so he won't be making more.
I keep hoping his art will appear on "Stranger Things" or some other show set in the 1980s. His art was very popular back then, and I still think they are beautiful!
I am around the same age as you so I feel I grew up in the 1970's but became an adult in the 1980's. Loved parachute pants and the reason they are not back in style is because the were awesome. The were super comfortable, did not stain or really get dirty, and they looked good and were breathable. Make something that checks all the boxes and look out...they will get rid of it very quickly.
I was more late 70s, early 80s. Lot of good memories. Never any parachute pants or Swatch watches. It was Timex or nothing (takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin').
1966, 1984! We are the oldest class of Gen X and we spent all 4 years of high school and college in the 80s. Doesn't get any better than that.

Some fashion fads were day glo, shirts with stitches on the outside, hypercolor t-shirts, white shirts with black lettering with phrases like 'choose life', and Japanese flag shirts. Clothing had lots of pockets, zippers, and buckles. I almost forgot skinny ties, overalls, suspenders, and knit ties.

I visited NYC at the end of 1979, and you're so right. The Twin Towers were still there, of course, and I took many pictures of them (glad I have them now). I went to Times Square to celebrate the start of the 80s, and saw the ball drop from 1979 to 1980. It was a great visit, and want to return to see the 9/11 memorial. (Jan Griffiths).

I still have and use one of those suitcase sized boomboxes I bought in the early 80s ('82 or '83). It even has lights in it, dual cassette, an equalizer, awesome speakers, and can be plugged in as well as use batteries. I use it in the house now as my radio, but the cassette decks work fine. They even still record. I have a lot of cassettes still, and still play and enjoy them. (Jan Griffiths).

We used to have a sit down Pac-Man game in our local Pizza Hut. The arcade version was great but the Atari 2600 version left much to be desired. My brother and I both had boomboxes, very seldom did either one of us take ours outside the house because they would eat through batteries like crazy. Great memories of the 1980's.

They had the best food, music, tv shows, movies, toys, video games, makeup, hair, fashion and hope and optimism! This was a great trip down memory lane.
