I have to admit I'm struggling to see the value in this product. I see perceived value but I can't fathom spending $4k on what is all intents and purposes an HTPC device. Here's why. Most people already have content they have paid for. The problem being that most of it is not providing the level we are effectively paying for; true 4k and the audio. Now, this device fixes that issue but, in order to do so you have to basically throw away all your current digital content, waste that investment, and start again. The next issue is, you can spend way less on a "server". TB drives are not expensive if you know what you are actually buying. IE they advertise "Data Center" drives. Okay. Sounds really important to a novice but, what exactly are you selling? All a DC drive provides is A ) the ability to run 24/7. I don't think you're watching content 24/7 B ) Longer warranty than a standard "consumer" drive. That's it. So what is the cost of that warranty exactly in the $4k price? Other than that, anyone can purchase a DC drive. I have 8 in my house. 3 6TB for a server on my home network. The rest are drives used for whatever you want on the PCs they are installed. Cost for server drives, $180 total. A 1 TB NVMe is around $60. They have faster transfer rates than DC and are 1 MB slower in write speed. If $700+ for a 960 GB drive that writes 1 MB faster is value to you, go for it. But most of this is straight marketing with zero data provided about what is actually running this $4k device. They also failed in any of their documentation to actually provide what hardware they are using. IE the processor. They talk about the ability to stream/share to multiple devices. Awesome. But $4k for that? Unless you have a home with multiple 4k TVs and SRS systems, that's not worth 4k. Again, there are systems that already do this ... even if you throw lossless etc . You're not feeding it to a space that will have a system capable of playing that back. My sons don't have full Dolby Atmos in their bedrooms. They have a 2.1 PC stereo system and usually they are wearing headphones. TL;DR $4k for a device you have to then invest into more digital libraries to work with their proprietary library, is a lot. Unless you just have money to spend. 🤷♂
We did not have this information when we shot the video but do now. The Strato V will work like all of the other Kaleidescape players. It has a USB slot to add an external bluray reader. This proves to their ecosystem you own the content and then that same content shows up in the Kaleidescape store at a greatly reduced price. But the best part is for all of us who still have a big library of old DVD movies hanging around. The cost to upgrade an old terrible looking DVD is usually $5-8 (except Disney of course) to go to the full 4K latest mix. That alone is pretty cool. You can also rent movies for around $8 unless it was just released in theaters. This gets you a bit perfect rental for just a couple of bucks more than what Apple, Amazon, VUDO charge for low res streaming.
I agree with you. I purchase re certified drives that cost about $9 a TB. My unraid plex server is 112 TB. I have about $1200 invested. Plex is free and so is torrenting movies. That doesn’t include nvidia shield pro that cost me $170. This unit has been very disappointing. It flakes out too many times to count. But when it works and does everytime after a re boot it gives me the best possible transfer available
I think the business model for Kalidiscape is common in the audio industry. It's more of "look at me, I have something you can't afford".it's the exclusivity they provide, not really the product/quality. I am sure there is minimal difference to a 4k bluray. When someone comes up with a service that allows you to download movies(encrypted) at the 4k bluray or better quality kaleidoscope will die off very quickly.
@stampede8681 I basically agree with your thoughts. Personally to me it's a niche product. My stepfather would buy this simply because he has money and lacks any technical skills whatsoever. Good news overall. I've been following Kaleidescape for, well, decades now. I think they are great just could never justify that price tag. This is better. And while still expensive, I can see this getting more people. Personally, i think their entry point should be $2k-$4k However with MUCH MORE storage space. The unit is 960 Gb. That’s why it holds about 10 movies at around 70+ Gb apiece. it was like eight or nine grand to get into Kaleidescape before so it’s cool to see them come up with a more reasonable entry price point.
It's a great way to get into the Kaleidescape system but it won't be for everyone. The quality of Kaleidescape will be better than downloaded movies as Kaleidescape actually works with the movie studios to get the perfect copy of the movie itself.
@@AudioAdvice That you have to reinvest in purchasing said "copies" from their library. That's not an inexpensive ask for "normal" people. HOW CAN YOU PROMOTE THIS PRODUCT WITH A SMILE .... IN CANADA FOR A 1TB Kaleidescape STRATO V ... $6000 , AS YOU SAID ONLY HOLDS TEN 4K MOVIES..... UM I WILL PASS ... THIS COMPANY WILL EVENTUALY GO UNDER THEN YOU CAN SAY BYE BYE TO ALL YOUR MOVIES
This will be a great solution for some but it is not for everyone. Thanks for sharing
Done!
Thanks for watching!
no thanks
Not for everyone. Thanks for watching
No thanks. Even with this “affordable” box, I won’t be a Kaleidescape customer. I don’t watch enough movies to justify the cost.
I am more than happy with 4K disks, Fandango at Home, Apple TV 4K and the streamers. Also they can charge what they want, that is their right but Kaleidescape is overpriced and the quality difference from streaming does not justify its price premium.
To each his own, thanks for sharing
$4000 plus you have to rent or purchase and it’s only 96 gb? Yikes!!!! Is it better than plex? I have movies in my server that are over 80gb. My unraid plex server is 112 TB cost me less than $1200 and my movies are torrent free. Yeah I have no shame downloading from woke Hollywood 😂
The quality of Kaleidescape will be better than downloaded movies as Kaleidescape actually works with the movie studios to get the perfect copy of the movie itself.
proprietary media player. trash
Its the only way to get bit perfect copies of movies and TV shows into your system.
@@AudioAdvice That you have to reinvest in purchasing said "copies" from their library. That's not an inexpensive ask for "normal" people.
If I pay $24.99 for an UHD4k Dolby Atmos/IMAX/HDR etc they want me to repurchase that same $24.99? Just to use their $4k device.
If they supported already purchased content, THEN this might be a great value at 🤢 ... $4k.
@@shawnduffy279 Actually on their other units you can get a cheap Bluray reader and connect it to the unit. Then, by proving you own the physical disc, you can buy it at a greatly discounted price in the Kaleidescape store. In many cases, this is especially great with old DVD's as the upgrade to 4K is typically $5-9 (Disney is always more). We have not heard yet if the Strato V will do this, but we hope so. Most rentals are also around $8 which is a few bucks more than Apple, Amazon, etc, but the quality is so much better.
@@AudioAdvice I'm not talking about Blu Ray. That is a totally different discussion unfortunately. I'm talking about people who have digital content. Movies/shows purchased from, Apple, Fandango (formerly VUDU), Universal, Prime etc.
If Kaleidescape made a unit to provide the quality we should be getting from those services similar to this product but without all the added fluff, that would be great. Not @ $4k mind you.
That's why I mentioned digital format in my previous post. Because I can't off hand think of a product or DIY solution that would do this. I can download my VUDU content but not in 4k. My only option is to stream OR buy a hardcopy and rip it. Which is tedious. In my opinion, that's a market kaleidescape could target and NOT have to have a library of their own to put costs into. Because that is not cheap by any means.
@@shawnduffy279 agreed, that would be great, but the movie studios currently don't let you transfer what you own between services. We sure wish they did.
