  • I have a bad cat on the right side, so I dropped the exhaust for inspection and repair. I thought it would be cool to hear an M113 with open headers.

Okay so open 3 inch straight pipe from the exhaust manifolds back is how you make your s430 sound like a cammed ls

Wow almost 300k miles. Any significant issues with the car?

Nothing more than a few deferred maintenance items and the cat. I sold this car a year ago after I fixed a few things. It had a fire in the headlight assembly which burned the wiring harness, so I replaced the whole harness and light from a parts car. The electrical fire was the reason I got it cheap. I daily an 03 S430 with 160K on it and I rarely have any issues with it. The last major issue I had was a knock sensor fault due to a squirrel chewing through the wire (not a fault of car). My experience is if you keep up with the maintenance on the W220 cars, they are quite reliable.

@@AlanTrades I did the rear air shocks about 5 years ago and the air pump about 1 year ago. I got the parts from eBay and they seem to hold up just fine. I also rebuilt the front suspension last year with eBay parts and no problems so far. I used eBay parts as a test, expecting them to be junk, but they have all held up so far on these country roads. I'm rather surprised.

So what happens if you keep driving on a bad cat?

Depends how it failed. If it's plugged, you stand a good chance of over-heating your engine, along with poor MPG and low power. If it's broken internally or the honeycomb substrate is melted, chances are it will just make a rattling noise and smell funny. The main reason I see cats fail is due to an existing issue with the engine; either a misfire, lean code, or leaking fuel injector/s. All of these issues allow un-burnt fuel into the exhaust and when it hits the hot cat, it burns even hotter: overheating the cat and causing premature failure.

I should mention the obvious engine light and failure to pass emissions inspection if applicable to your jurisdiction.
