Joe, if you’re going to drill out a screw,use a reverse drill as it will undo the screw if it bites into the screw instead of a normal forward drill which tightens it as you drill it out. 👍
I hope you at least got ahold of the seller and gave him a piece of your mind. People like that shouldn't be given a pass.

I think Joe likes these bikes with more problems than the seller said or hidden problems. They are more fun to work on than regular easy issues.
@@travharrell1713 Most people could not handle that however. I would not even consider buying this heap without a compression test.
Seller would just get a kick out of it knowing that the buyer actually found out, basically like a bully. Everyone knows you do not feed the bully and that is what you would be doing.
Unfortunately it happens a lot I buy and sell bikes and sellers lie more often then you would think and every time I try and get ahold off them I get blocked some people just like to rip people off I guess
Hey Buddy great work. Love this channel. Here is a tip from an old engineer/rebuilder of 50 years. Buy yourself a set of reverse drill bits. When you drill out a stripped bolt or screw head it will heat it and remove it all in one process. When drilling it out with a standard bit you are just tightening it more.
On those pins, use a adjustable pin punch. Start out with the least pressure. Increase force as needed. Test on 2x4. This way you don't break the towers the pin goes through as you push directly on the pin. Spray a tad of penetrative oil on them.
Works well!

With stripped screws you could also dremel a slit and you a flat head driver. Enjoy the great content!!

This was the bike of my dreams back in the 80's. You are blessed.
I owned & raced a one year earlier version ( 1981) with great results . I was 21 when I bought it that year & at age 23 took a gnarly header over a set of triples at our local track & broke several ribs & punctured my right lung . Kinda took the “ wind outta my sails” so to speak about continuing racing . One of the funnest bikes I EVER owned though . Great video here , sure brought back some memories 😎👍

As a teenager I used to have a 1982 YZ 250. Man that thing was a beast. I broke it a couple times but when it was running, it was awesome.
I bought a brand new YZ 250 in 1982. Loved that bike.
I had a used one and put a new piston and ring in and it was pretty fast to me. Faster than all my other dirt bikes.
you need to invest in a vapour blaster. it pains me to watch you do all of this and it ending up looking old.

Not sure if this was ever mentioned to you before or not, but with the Japanese products and those bolts with the head that looks like a Philips,it is actually more than likely JIS.You can tell if it is with the presence of a dot on the head of the screw/bolt. While they look like a Philips, there are subtle differences in the shape of the grooves in the head. When you see the heads all chewed up on a JIS screw,it's from using a Philips screwdriver rather than a correct JIS one. A JIS screwdriver works well in a Philips screw but the reverse is not so much the case. I cammed out/stripped the heads of many JIS screws before learning about the differences. Vessel makes an excellent set of screwdrivers or even bits for a 1/4" driver.

Strong work! That bike was never gonna run until you did this, and i like how you dont overcomplicate things with excessive measuring etc. You just put things together right and with correct parts

One area where you need to step up your game is the air filters on these machines. Use air filter oil in a bottle and pour it onto the filter. Work it in with your hands until it is completely covered inside and out and squeeze out the excess. Your brand new top ends will thank you for it. Nice work bringing this parts bike back to life.
Everyday this guy teaches me something new. Trying to rebuild my 1999 KX250 2 stroke and this guys videos inspire me not to give up lol.
I was 20 years old when that bike came out I get goosebumps listening to a startup I used to have one of those and I also had a 250 like an 84 250

Really enjoy the videos Joe and I admire your 'never say die' attitude - when a bike comes to you it's gonna get fixed whether it wants it or not! The only thing I'd say though is that in my 2 stroke career I found the best starting technique to be choke full on and throttle fully closed. In fact it is best not to be even touching the throttle as I had the tendency to open the throttle a little as a reflex when I kicked the starter.

2 vintage I got to say man This is one of the most beautiful design and beautiful style dirt bikes in history at out classes and looks in style than any newer dirt bike
Anytime a bike comes with an extra engine you can assume the bike doesn't run
Absolutely haha if a bike like that is 800 dollars it’s already a red flag, it’s essentially a project at that price
Or Box of Parts. I just rebuilt the engine and have all these extra parts
@2vintage I have ran into a issue yesterday rebuilding my 87 warrior 350 maybe you could help walk me through getting it sorted ( for some reason the wrist pin will not come out of the old piston (yes I remembered to remove the cir clips first)
@@richgwozdz8580 try heat it a bit, may not be easy, get loads of penetrant and wd40 on it and soak, repeat multiple times over day or 2, heating it might expand enough to pop it out with no damage
@@connorwilson8078 I’m going to go try that right now because I tried the wristpin tool that my buddy had that usually rebuilds my bike but it snapped his tool it’s that stuck it’s as if the damn thing expanded in the piston

Nice work 💯👌. I had one, wasn't in bad shape. Had to much missing so I did the right thing & sent it down the road. Spent what free time I had looking for parts & gave up. It was in a hurricane ,saltwater flood . Cool to see running & sounds great 🎬🔧🔥🔥👍 . 🫡

Preserve your seals, place a few drops of STP in the valley of the seal before a shaft goes into the seal. Prevents nicks and cuts going together as well as lubricating the seal itself so it does not burn out. Another thing is, never run an engine without coolant in the water pump. That will cause early seal failure! Ask me how I know!! Annnnnnnd, that strawberry syrup you spread over bearings, use it on cams and followers without fail! Cam failure on a new build usually happens within the first few hours of run time. That red assembly lube is loaded with zinc and helps eliminate galling.
Left hand drill bits are your friend when you cannot notch a screw with a dremel.

When it's finished it will be worth approx 3k. A new 2024 YZ125 is MSRP $7,099.00. Someone will easily pay $3,000 - $3,250 for a 42 year old freshened up solid rider and not a museum piece.
I really digg how you work on all these bikes with the most simple tools nothing crazy spendy it's all basically Harbour Freight stuff lol great job on this bike
Loving the videos as always! Just a clarification, square keys are not woodruff keys, only the partialy round ones are woodruff. I mention this because you are becoming a very good tech and you might as well be good AND correct lol. One of my trades teachers used to say that.
In the future, when you have a stuck screw, use a #30 drill bit, and a #3 EZ Out (shave the very tip of the EZ out, so that it is not pointed), and you will have great success. I probably removed over 25000 stuck screws as a sheetmetal mechanic in the Air Force and Army. When a jet goes into a PHASE inspection, you would be surprised that there are over 300 stuck screws per jet, when they are de-paneling a jet on the first couple days (thats on a fighter jet) imagine on a cargo plane.. (2A773 for life and 15G)

I remember as a kid wanting one of these so bad, i was still riding dirt bikes with dual shocks that beat ya to death and were really heavy..
That's a real original J model there Joe, watch for leaks at the steering neck after you have a couple hours on it (experience talking)... also, the rear brake stay is bent and will add to the probs with that rear brake.
The statement "ran when parked" could mean many things. As in it ran when I parked it two years ago before It quit running the next time I rode it.
Ran when parked but was clanging so hard it caused an earthquake 😅😂

Knowing you do these Dirt Bike Revivals for your Channel...I give you a lot of credit. I wouldn't have even looked at a Yamer"haw. I couldn't afford always fixing and replacing parts. And I Rest my case..."this bike needs a little too much to do that and I just don't feel safe riding it at this point and I don't want to break something that doesn't need to be broken by riding it right"

Makes sense to make it 100 percent. Before riding it. That's smart and making sure your safe to rip it.
You really need to get a set of left handed drill bits.... They're a lifesaver when removing broken/stripped head bolts and screws.
So nice to see it I had one the power band would scream she loved to fly handled so good felt like super man on it used to jump ceder creek sand mounds with it such a good balance bike

I had a bike I sold once that I sold as "ran when parked". I just forgot to tell the buyer that I meant I just put it neutral and let it run down a hill with the engine not running before I parked it. Hey, it ran down the hill, didn't it? At least I'm more honest than most of the people 2vintage gets his bikes from!!
At this point you might as well go all the way with it. The parts you mentioned, new tires, rebuild the suspension, and nice body work. Its not far off
I had an 81 yz 125 water cooled non power valve. Did alot of woods riding. Mine wasn't the greatest off the bottom and had to stay on the pipe. Great times

Get you some three bond,hondabond,yamabond whatever for the cases.
I use hondabond 4 on my tractor differential and it doesnt leak!

I'm amazed, you didn't catch many of these things, before u paid. Reminds me of the market place, scammers, buying at auctions, ect, and just trying to flip for a profit. Market place has gotten bad.

Top tipp, 30 years ago all cross buddies turn to 1:100 mixture. Now i owned a 1981 RS 100, tuned to 130 kmh. An it runs well with 1:100! So what for the extra oil, to glue up the pipe, an stress the spark plug. LG from the Niederrhein /Germany

That radiator, o my days, imagine the cap coming off, boiling water in your face.
Those 82,s were the first year for water cooling and they plumbed the cooling through the steering head which was a horrible design because coolant would leak into the steering head bearings and corrode the shit out of them. . I know owners would bypass the head bearings and run hoses directly to the radiators bubba louie. ....
Love the 1/2 to 3/8 to 1/4 adapter on impact wrench

Wow love the channel o have been waiting so long for this video to come out. It’s a truly amazing bike however so close but still so far away. The good news is the price just keeps going up on these older bikes. Keep up the great work thanks for the post can’t wait to see you get to ride it sounds great but I could hear the brake handle or the clutch handle raffling the whole time you have it the gas. Once it’s done it’s done an investment right now but just hang on to it until the right price comes along. When someone sees this thing in top shape and remembers that was there first bike and how much fun they used to have on it will only make them want it even more

Been waiting for this one love the early 80's motocross bike's. God knows what they were smoking putting the rad on the head stock but it certainly makes it stand out 😂

Might want to pick up a set of lefthanded drill bits can be useful extracting bolts !
Black silicone doesn't hold up to gasoline might want to use yamabond or hondabond on crankcases
a kid in my neiborhood growing up had that bike, was a ripper but had a cracked gas tank lol.
One thing to think of Joe, since you don't have a big torch kit with acetylene & oxygen, instead of using propane (blue tank) grab a MAP gas (yellow) next time. It burn quite a bit hotter than propane and will heat that case up more for the bearings to drop in. You will need a different ignitor thing though, the propane one isn't made for MAP gas but it's totally worth the cost for the higher heat!
I've always loved how the some of the most technical machinery always ends up relying completely on a Circlip or a Woodruff key.

@@mikeandrews1899 Don't get me wrong. Nothing will ever be as cool as a 1980s 2-stroke Motocross bike. This rebuild has definitely been a favorite. Inspires me to maintain my Elsinore more regularly.
@@sammckinlay7338 my first NEW dirt bike was an '81 full floater. That was a great year for 125 motocross . I was 15 and just getting started in racing.
@@sammckinlay7338 back in the '70s , I rode Honda's on the farm as a kid but was always wanting an XR75 , then an Elsinore. But I enjoyed my CT70 , SL100 , and my SL125 jumping terraces in the pasture pretending to be racing with Smith , Croft , and Tripes 😂👌
