Toyota Prado 250 IMHO from a 150 VX Owner who was looking to upgrade Positives - Looks great from the outside - Front dash and front seating area are excellent - Tech and screens look fantastic - 8 speed auto Negatives - Approx 10k + more expensive across the range - No gas struts for bonnet - 48 V mild hybrid adds complexity, and dubious benefits - Ad Blue addition and still has a DPF - Same carryover engine 2.8 L GD with no more power/torque - Seven seat set up is a backwards step with a much smaller amount of boot room/very high lip, plastic storage ‘box’ and lack of room for a fridge - Toyota says seats can’t be removed due to battery underneath - Weighs 250-300kg more - Cool box is much smaller than 150 on VX+ - Rear seats/2nd row don’t slide back-and-forth for more space - Only 2, 5 seat variants the GX and the altitude to avoid to limited boot space - Fuel tank is 110 L - less than 150 L from the Prado 150 - Smaller boot opening height than the 150 - no rear Diff lock in anything but the altitude - more models in old 150 have both - Payloads approx 100kg less than old 150’s - Stop start - Wheel not on the back, under car - Glove box and storage in the front is small I.e no sunglasses holder, storage above gearshift in cubby - Driver monitoring system annoyance - No space for a dual battery under bonnet -Sliding GVM kg, moves up and down depending on model grade. Just picked up a 2006 100 Series FTE Turbo Diesel Sahara-stock, 240k on the clock, and all for $39k. Couldn’t be happier! Originally considered the 250 Prado, but the wait dragged on, so I pivoted-and glad I did. For the cash I saved, I can afford a rebuild if needed some day. Plus, the 100 Series offers simplicity, heaps of space, smooth daily driving, no annoying beeps or AdBlue hassles. The new head unit with CarPlay and reverse cameras is just the cherry on top. Why drop $100k+ when this does it all?
Coming from a person who's last 4 vehicles were/are Toyota's think I would look at the Ford Everest rather this this Prado release Think the only version of the current Prado is the Altitude for consideration if one really wanted one.
The altitude is still $100k on road but I agree with you. Out of the new vehicles, the tech in the current model fords are still ahead of Toyota and the Everest has 600nm of torque
I just watched another video of a couple who took their new 250 on sand - and it didn't take long for them to get bogged - I didn't realise the spare tyre under the car gave so little clearance.
I can't be happier with my Prado 250 altitude. Before this I drove 1 V6 and 2 v8 but this 2.8 L V4 doesn't feel under powered at all. This is my first Toyota and I love it - exterior and interior look, interior fit and finish, safety and Offroad features, the way it drives. It has adequate power and I think it feels more powerful due to boost from 48V electric motor. For more information see the video of Ronny Dahl. I think the price is reasonable for what you are getting. Everest is great vehicle for the price, no doubt about it. But I have read a lot about issues with Everest. My friend has it and his car was replaced due to major failure and his second car is also giving him trouble. Everybody knows about Toyota's reliability.
In south africa this has been consistently top 3 most sold vehicle over the past 6 months. We also have different variants that dont have a compromised boot. As much as I see issues with the vehicle, it certainly is selling very, very well!
I would wait 5years before you consider upgrading. But then again if you’re a UA-camr - which you are - I can see why you’d might want to buy a new vehicle to attract more viewers to your channel. But those who already have a 150 Prado MY2017-MY2023 should just wait or be content with your current Prado unless you’re looking to burn 🔥 money 💵 💵 💵 🔥🔥🔥

What I’m hearing here is different to what I’m actually seeing on Ronny Dahl RL testing. It’s definitely an upgrade from the 150. Yes I think most things get more expensive as the years go by.
Speaking of price gouging I’ve order and have been waiting over 12 months for my grey on black GX550, in the US the black roof is $250usd, here the two tone is close to 10 times that amount in AUD. When questioned all I got was a giggle..but it’s what I want so sometimes you roll with the punches 😂

Prado 250 brings significant upgrades over the 150 relic: modern tech, refined interiors, and multiple drive modes. In sporty mode, it flies-night and day difference compared to the 150. If you think the 150 is better, stick to it.
If you are going from a 150 Kakadu to a 250 Kakadu you're going backwards - Same multiple drive modes, same sport mode but no KDSS, no rear airbags, no shift paddles. Very nice sunroof though.

The 250 Kakadu is a true game-changer and can run 33s without any lifts or mods. I’d say next year would be the best time to buy a 150 Kakadu as many will be available in the used market.
Redbook pricing 2024 Prado GX $72,500. Everest Sport (not bottom of the line) $74,640. There's just no excuse for Toyota's pricing, and if towing is important to you then get the V6.

I think cancellations are not a big deal, they will sell like hotcakes, all the cancellations will be snapped up. Pricing is all relevant to wages and costs for everything rising. I think the shape inside and out is mint.
When you did your test drive did the 250 seem more sluggish than your 150? Also how was the 250 compared to the 150 in terms of body roll when cornering ?
What about comparing the US dollar from 2005 to todays rate in relation to the AUD? Also, could it be the top of the range models that are inflated compared to the gx/gxl variants. I know for sure that cars are cheaper now than they were 20 yrs ago in relation to real estate values.
Yes! Good point, the usd to aud has changed so this could be a factor however, I think the program just used USD as a standard unit of measurement in today’s terms not at the time of the exchange rate for every year if that makes sense?
The Aussie dollar last lost a great deal of value over the last 20 years and reflects in current pricing. 150 owners should just keep them if they can’t afford. Don’t buy a new house either because they’ve doubled every ten years

At the end of the day I think it's just life :) it will never get cheaper and also car companies have their up's and low's. I think that if regulations didn't demand "clean-air" probably there will not be any hybrids etc. Also - that new Prado has basically 2 engines + loads of more regulatory "must be things". All things cost :) I think that 2005 Prado with 87 000 AUD today would be overpriced - even if that is mathematically should be as "cheap" as it was 2005. I personally think that new cars in general are not affordable for many people(including myself). It's not Toyota problem. Sure all that Hilux motor +hybrid thing will make things more complicated and probably will lessen the toughness of Prado 250. Add those "beeps-poops" - and I personally do not like the outcame. I have my lowest spec 21 double-cab Hilux that was 30 000 EUR(with some extras as metal tonneau cover, undercoating etc)...and hope that will last - I just can't afford to change every other year for a newer model :) Just looked up: 2021 hilux price started from 29 700 eur....today it's startinud price is 36 750 eur :D.

Great point. Even ABS reckons about your figure too. I’ll do some more research on average wages and circle back to this for sure 👍 Definitely makes a difference to the calculations. We also need to consider superannuation gets added to our wage now so we may actually be a better position when considering super too. I could add super payments to the wage too. What do you think?

It's a very difficult, if not interesting, question to explore. I guess the other thing is that the 250 has far more tech and improvements over the 120 and certainly over the 150. I think $100K for the Altitude is not too bad, really.

@oldbloke204 spend $100K on a brand new prado or $40K-$50K on a 10 year old one. If you're going to spend that kind of money on a car, you will get a much lower interest rate by using equity in your house. I haven't done this myself, but I know plenty of people who do that. And good luck to them, they want to drive a nice new car, nothing wrong with that.

You need to compare the cars correctly a Prado Grande ( the equivalent of a Kakadu) in 2004 was $72,710 exc govt charges. So to compare a $50,000 model with a current Kakadu’s is misleading. So to use your RBA inflation calculator that equates to $123,800 in 2023.

It is 200 kgs heavier than the previous model with the same motor. Accelerate to 100 kph 11.2 sec. Good luck towing most caravans with it.

I wouldn’t class the 79 series in with the prado. The 76 is much more close to the prado.

When you did your rba calculation you had 2023?, we are weeks away from 2025 and ordering a car now would be a 2025 delivery.
