Tips And Comments:
- Playing Technique:
Played between pickups with dynamics changes according to the song (some parts with less strength). Played with a pick. All pickup volume knobs at full. For the solo i cut down one knob and used the other one to increase the volume in every note, creating a volume swell
- Gear Sound:
Added a good amount of high end (treble), a little of mid frequencies and a good amount of bass too. I tried to get a similar tone with old strings and my bass. I know it's not perfect
For the solo added an octave pedal or whammy, overdrive, a little flanger and delay. This and the use of swelling technique do the trick
- About The Song:

The bassist from tool is a genius
Justin Chancellor if you were wondering
Paul D`Amour was on the first two albums though.
VideoPrens I loved the early stuff and the bass was definitely awesome! I think Justin is more creative, though.
Dont forget John Myung 😉
Infinite Sentient Justin actually wants to play, the other guy wanted to play guitar
I can hold that. Play my beer.
Comment thief
hold the beer holdthebeer holdbeer hober :D
I can hear that. Hold my bass
I wanted to like it, but it's at 666 so thought I'd tell you instead
@@burak9645 Nice! I see what you did there!
“So which time signature do you want this song to be in?”
Tool: Yes
dance of eternity has way more time signature changes than this
@@exhylo5799 Yes, 108 to be exact. But that just feels cocky like they added all those just to show off that they can. The change in it feels very abrupt and not so musical.
This on the other hand is just beauty the changes go with the music.
@@saviophilip1776 I mean I like Dream Theater, but sometimes they're just doing stuff for flex
eXhylo and yet it can’t hold a candle to this song on any level ... unless chops is the sole measure of well written music.
eXhylo not even mike portnoy likes dream theater
the bass line of tool is always incredible, makes me want to play again my bass
Emanuel Germán Gomez do it dudd
Dude
Just DO IT
Slap dat bass
wants again me to read play o Shakespeare
Playing Tool is only as hard as you think it is. You just need patience and concentration. It will come to you. To all the bassists watching this hoping to play, I wish you all the best of luck and I’m 100% sure you can do it.
I don't think any of their songs are terribly hard to perform, but they definitely wouldn't be easy to compose.
@@JonnyCrackers That’s how I see it really. I think the different time signatures could trip you, but as a bassist of 3 years I can play any of their songs. I wouldn’t know where to start trying to write something like that though.
You've basically been my bass teacher. Thank you so much for these helpful videos. I'm new to bass and am trying to teach myself. So far, so good! I don't think I could have done it with out your videos though.
ua-cam.com/video/d-9ubROeMMM/v-deo.html
Peter Frigo that’s kinda low bro. Don’t spam ur vids in comments.
Ditto! I'm a new bass player to, and i learn from this. So cool song, now a lot of practise to make it sound good.👍
I think I just schismed
Hahaha
+limp biscuits no.1 fan :/ is your name a joke
+Bob Carter yes!!! Everyone thinks I'm fucking serious with them lmao
limp biscuits no.1 fan :/ just asking fam
+Bob Carter nah shut up baby girl
I have to say, you're a goddamn hero, man. I love this song, so after I bought my bass and learned a few songs I decided to learn this. The beginning was pretty easy, but with all the time changes, and the audio of the song covering most of the bass, I couldn't get the rest. Other tabs just looked a hot mess with no context. Watching you play, pausing a few times to slowly repeat certain sections by myself then comparing to you, you made it easy. Less than an hour, and now those "tough" parts from the middle on don't look so out-there anymore. I can play each section fairly well in such a short time, and now I just have to work on getting more consistent, being able to transition from one section to another, and then memorize it all. You really did help me out, thank you.
+Michael Chrosniak Nice words, i'm glad it helps ;)
i cried
CoverSolutions hey man just curious. After the intro, when you are playing 0-10-12 on your lower D (I specify namely because I believe for pretty much all TOOL songs including this one on your channel, i believe it's virtually always Drop D Tuning correct?)
What you're playing is, and correct me if im not, i WANT to say a triple note hammeron..?
You hit the open D, then hammer on the 10th and then 12th fret yea?
And, again SOLEY based on what little I can gleam here since it's played so fast lol
But you're also doing so in such a way that you let go of 10 JUST after you hammeron 12
Right?
I'm really namely curious bc like isaidits so fast even at .25% playback speed I can hardly tell what you're doing there lol
I've tuned my bass to.drop d, bc I like having the extra d string for.my playing style anyway
Also, i ask bc. Yea I'm a newbie just still learning a lot but I CAN hit hammerons, and i do kinda have trouble when the frets aren't right next to each other cause I haven't developed much range yet lol but I AM capable of hitting 10, then 12, on that string perfectly. Problem is, i can't seem to get it to sound Right? Maybe it's bc ive.kinda got a sorta funk style to how i play, and i just need to do it a bit different? Or idk. Granted I only have a Yamaha electric bass atm, not too say it's a bad instrument it's one of the better basses Yamaha makes and all. So its a good bass, and everything else comes.out with the Exact same sound you're producing but that DAMNED hammeron!
SO yea. Any advice? :)
Btw LOVE YOUR CONTENT keep it.up man and rock on!
CoverSolutions dunno if everything is covered in the video description but I thinnk I MAY see part of the reason I'm getting such an off tone.
But it's ONLY off on the hammeron and nothing else tho???
Just.an. update to.my question:)
SriffMeister ok. Ik this is late but what I do and what he does is this. MAKE SURE it is a fluid solid motion first of all. You hammer on the 10 and then jam down on the 12th super fast. 10= Index finer, and the flick to 12 = Ring finger. And then very fastly after hitting the twelve move you index down to the 10th fret on the G string. And yes tuning is DADG foor almost every Tool song
At 50 years old, I've been playing for 39 years. I watched this video from start to finish and I must say about your playing
" I KNOW THE PIECES FIT !!"
Awsome job
ua-cam.com/video/d-9ubROeMMM/v-deo.html
Most underrated comment
hope i get 39 years to play it...hope you are fine fellow bass dude ❤
@@adrianstroila thank you sir. Doing just fine
This is one of those songs which sounds harder to play than it actually is
TheMuseArchive quite common for that to be. Example A, Eruption. Sounds INSANELY HARD. I'd put it at a 7/10 difficulty wise
Once you get the hammer-ons right, it's not too hard
TheMuseArchive my main issue playing this song is trying to NOT FUCKING HIT THE BOTTOM STRING WHEN HAMMERING! Sorry for that anger, but holy shit. I have the finger speed to play it, but every time I try to hammer on and off, I accidentally mute the bottom string, and it pisses me off.
You just gotta open up your picking hand more.
In what warped world is this not hard?
4:48 to 5:24 is so simple but it just sounds so beautiful
Speaking as a classically trained musician: How friggin' amazing is Tool? So Amazing. I only saw them live one and it was in a gigantic arena and I had miserable seats and no one around me appreciated what they were witnessing. They were just focused on getting more beers.
I always get an extremely spiritual feeling whenever I listen to this song/ play it on guitar.
same here since I was younger
Greg 86 Its done that to me for as long as I can remember.
Cause its a spiritual song! Many tool songs are. Truly unique band. One of those bands that cant be copied. Ppl dont even try to haha
The Trash Man - I may be incorrect, but i remember reading a few years back that this song wasn't just about the surface level meaning of some bf/gf breakup. It was about humanity as a whole.....Odd time signatures often have an entrancing, mystical vibe to them, much like this song sounds to me.
That's the weed speaking to you...
That part where he does the variation of the main riff at the end is so brutal! It sounds so amazing
308 people didnt know the pieces fit
Thanks for providing the tabs. I managed the riffs so far, and this helps me but the pieces together. Watching this, I know they will fit.
Go home. You're crippling our communication.
@@cameronshepherd5165 Nice one.
Nice one
I think we can all agree on 46 and 2 by tool
We can certainly agree on that
FadingShad0ws too easy
Zack Rodgers like this isn't?
both of these songs from tool are so much fun to play because its so incredible
ua-cam.com/video/d-9ubROeMMM/v-deo.html
I love this bass line. It's so mellow and chill yet kinda trippy. It's like really good. It take me pleases.
Your cover does it justice.
The bass chords in that quiet part of the bridge are really something else
Badass! No lie hearing the bass so prominent in this song kind of made me fall in love with it all over again.
I have to say, watching the tabs was really... enlightening. Tool certainly put a lot of effort into writing their songs.
I learned this song in a hour thanks to you. I'm a beginning /intermediate bass player and this was easy for me. Or not easy but not extremely hard. I also learned forty six by 2
I started playing the bass 8 months ago, discovered this song when I was 4 months in. At the time I was too inexperienced to attempt it so after leveling up I started learning it, and today, after two weeks I was able to play this without getting lost in the time signatures or keys! Thanks for these videos, really helps out newbies like me a ton
The part that starts at 4:38 always gives me chills. So simple yet so effective. Justin Chancellor is great.
ive been using this video to practice this song, and today I've finally got the whole song down. a simple "thanks" doesn't even begin to describe the gratitude I have for you and your videos!
I can play that..... (plays YYZ)
i had a good laugh from this
lucckino it's an easy song
i didn't say it wasn't?
is an easy song a new born could play this
Tiger Stripes I probably can't, my fingers are shit af
Lots of signature changes geez! Respect mate.
Yay prog bands!
ATC200X Fanatic Yeah, welcome to progressive music.
Great video. I love how you've cranked the bass volume up more. Really makes it stand out and can enjoy it so much more.
4:52 On replay, THAT IS FRIKIN BEAUTIFUL.
Metallica: Our songs are long
Tool: Hold my time signature

@@marso_sounds Sleep - dopesmoker
Then there’s Dream Theater with a 43 minute song.
Wow. Well done. Gives me a renewed appreciation for how central the bass is in this song, and how equally the instrumentation is in Tool.
Lateralus by Tool PLEASE!
GET THE FACK INSIDE QUINTON
Quinton that one is super simple on bass. It takes a minute to get a feel for the song's flow but once you do, its one of their easiest songs to play on guitar and bass. Most tabs should be accurate enough for that one
Quinton o
Quinton ooo
WHAT THE FACK ARE YOU DOING QUINTON? GO TO SLEEP
Definetly one of the greatest bass riffs of all time.
The fact that it goes from all of these time signatures to just a standard 4/4 at the end still makes me chuckle. Excellent cover
Dude, I love this song so much because that riff is powerful. Tool is awesome.
Just discovered this band when I saw a video that mentioned, "if your favorite band is Tool, then you play the bass and love wine". The bass part is true for me and had to try their songs out. I am not disappointed at all. I love it.
Your playing motivates me . . . To stop playing bass
I love all of your bass vids! I’m totally blown away you can play the whole song in one take! So awesome!!!!
This was always one of my favorites! Ive been watching a few of your covers for about a week now, im about to order my very first guitar, and im getting a bass! I really love your style, you definitely made me feel even as a pre-beginner, that even playing this song is not out of my reach :)
This is still my favorite song to play after over 10 years of bass. Ridiculously great tune. Tool 2019 new album boys!!
Dude I fucking love your account - it's got EVERYTHING! Awesome job keep on going dude
Just to tell you thank you!!!
Ive learned a lot of songs with your covers. You are simply amazing!
Go up with the good work!! Cheers
I'm in awe...that was amazing. I'm just starting to teach myself to play bass I haven't had much time to put in but watching your vids is teaching me a lot about technique that I don't have.
I am seriously thinking about buying a bass (guitar player) just to play 4:50
Did you get it :D?
Did you?
Perfect for putting a child to sleep. So dreamy..
Honestly my favorite bass riff from this song . It's hot this vibe that's so hard to explain

FIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNAAAALLLLLYYYYYYYY!!!!!! Someone who can play the damn intro CORRECTLY!!!! THANK YOU!! +1 like!!
This is probably one of my favorite bass line ever heard 😍😍
As a bassist for 40 years myself, I must say that you are an accomplished musician!!! Bravo!!!
I say good job ole' chap! amazing. Very rare to see a tribute played very very close to the real thing! you nailed it..even effects and tone were damn good
because fuck time signatures
Jeff B-c 54 one measure then 44
Jeff B-c there should just be no time signature count the beats when u want
Absolutely friggin' awesome! I saw Tool in Michigan this summer and this song kicks butt.
God the bass in the bridge just hits. such a beautiful sound coming from the guitar
JAMBI. PLEASE!
+King Asteroid YES
Oh God YES! Give it to me!!!! lol
Mekaleka high!
I second this
HELL YES
I always loved how Justin chancellor used double stops and chords for basslines instead of just single notes
The score helps ! The time signature changes are crazy. Excellent stuff thank you
great accuracy, tone..you can really learn from this channel..dont stop!!!!!
the video is back online, nice!
6:12 the best breakdown
this just shows how amazing justin chancellor is. the fact that he can remember all this and play it live perfectly every time is amazing.
watching this made me appreciate the song a whole lot more. that was awsome
thanks from México
I'd like to see Vicinity of Obscenity by System of a Down
Great work!
Thank you so much you have taught me how to play bass i have been playing with your stuff for over a year now and i have gotten a lot better then when i started thank you again.
Awesome job! One of the great rock bass parts of all time.
And that's a Justin "fucking genius" Chancellor's bass line !
I'm just glad I don't need to worry about time Signatures in songs like this
Iv only been playing bass for 2 weeks and your channel has really helped me learn, so I just wanted to say thank you :) schism=bass goals 🛠
Omg. This was amazing
how about disposition or intension?
i love how he plays around with the harmonics in that songs
A cover band I knew took my suggestion of them playing this at the school talent show... they won first prize
I always come just for the beginning rif and now I watched the play till the end for the first time. Man... Justin Chancellor is a freaking genius. More bass players like him pls.
I know this is old BUT remember anyone learning this song can even easier by slowing the video down. This guy makes learning much more simple than the other guys so with slowing the vid down a little i was able to learn the song MUCH quicker. Thanks again youre my GO-TO for bass
this song is great but there's so many timing changes its fucking confusing
welcome to Progressive Metal
FailSwing101 That's just the nature of progressive music I guess. It's great. Contrary to popular belief metal isn't the hardest thing to play technically. It's actually progressive.
yeah luckily, tool songs do that a lot but they're generally still easy to play by feel.
This one in particular is a really good example of how they don't really use time signature the same way as more generic music. It really only exists here to help you understand when learning. A lot of this song could be transcribed in 4/4 without losing much, but the downbeats would be all over the place and no one could understand it.
02496tips There are 47 time signatures in this song.
Vicarious by Tool please !
Simply awesome. Learnt for start to finish thanks to this video. Heros don't always wear capes!
I've been playing lots of these tool intros just because I didn't feel like tuning down to drop D, but finally just gave in and oh my god, this has made my night... Thank you so much dude...you really offer an excellent service to the world for free and I view kind of like a saint.
+murdock wormwood I've probably played this song 100 times in the last two weeks. I think I have it down flawlessly at this point, just wanted to report back...thank you so much. Without this video I probably wouldn't have even tried.
Well Done.
How about Lemon Song by LZ?
I just heard 5 seconds of this baseline repeatedly in the “Pink Skirt Plot” episode of Dateline and I instantly recognized it even though I probably haven’t heard the song in 10 years.
BEAUTIFUL. EXTRAVIGANT. THERE ARE NO WORDS FOR HOW I FEEL ABOUT THIS COVER
This is SO hard to play, & you NAILED IT ! Great job !!!!
PLEASE, DO PARABOLA, PLEEEEEASE!!!
Wow, most of the notes on here are quite easy, but the tricky part is playing all of them perfectly, and at one attempt! 🤭
Thanks for the great video, since years i tried to play it through completely, now i finally did it :D
Sick, sick, and MORE SICK!! Had to pick my jaw up from the floor after watching this video! Incredible job, dude! 🤘😎🤙👍
Awesome cover! Can you play The Lemon Song please?
I know it's in D tuning but I played it in C tuning and it sounded amazing
Never has there been a song I've heard before with such a powerful bass in it
You sir just made my day. Love the tune!
Dope! Do Tragedy's A' Comin' by Primus please.
Paranoid Android by Radiohead :)
+Holynutt Good idea. Amazing song
Awesome playing.
Love the tone.
Awesome. Your videos are the best. Thank you!
My Name Is Mud by Primus?
Great playing! I’ve always said the bass player gets over looked too much. I love Tool. The use of polyrhythms the bass used as a lead instrument. They show how important a bass is in a band. Justin Chancellor and Danny Carey are one of the best bass drum combos ever. You can’t forgetter Paul D’Amour either. Once again great playing!
Perfection in motion... Great cover man... I love it!
Wow, absolutely brilliant cover!
It would take me a year to learn just one of the riffs in that song and play it as flawlessly.
Chris Kounterstrike nah, m8. it all gets down to practice. Practice the fingerings at a slower tempo till you automize (or is it automatize?) it. Then start increasing the tempo. Do finger warm-up excercises and somesuch too, lad
the right word is muscle memory
Noobeh Noober I see you what you did there.

Am McBush Same here Ive been learning some Death Metal riffs as well
Tool - Stinkfist please!!!!!
Mind = Blown. Worth 10M views. I'm turning this video up, whenever I want to listen 'Schism.
Thanks so much for your instruction. It is really cool how you have set everything up here. The transcription with the rhythm
and time signatures was really helpful in learning this awesome song. You are so good on that bass! anyway thanks a lot!
