I am more than happy to have reviewers getting paid, for HONEST reviews. Just the editing of a video takes days. Shooting anything takes forever - way longer than just doing the project being filmed. That's work, and if the information is valuable, the content creator deserves all the compensation for that.

No doubt it's worth that much just for the body. It's not bad at least if you have to put tuners and pick ups in your not having to do all that much to it I've noticed with cheaper guitars that the tuners suck and the pick ups suck usually but anyway it works and it's cheap can't really go wrong with what you pay for it that was some really impressive stuff that you were doing at 11:50

I am from Bolivia (not Spain but sorta similar culture due to history) and his comment doesn't sound like an insult to me, so there may be a cultural difference. About his use of the word normal, I think he means authentic. As in a normal person, not a made up over-the-top caricature of a person who thinks they're the bee's knees. At least that's how I would understand the word normal as a Spanish speaker in this context (the word normal in Spanish is spelled the same and I'd bet my car it has the same origin, Latin)

@@fernandozegada6809 Don’t sweat it. The original comment is obviously not an insult of any kind, regardless of the cultural background. The comment was obviously worded kindly, describing a refreshing contrast between @60CycleHumCast and a lot of other guitar demo channels that are extremely biased due to sponsor input, or are completely full of themselves and make videos mostly to demonstrate what a badass they think they are by shredding stuff that 95% of their viewers can’t play. This review did seem authentic, and well done. On past reviews, I felt they varied. Some authentic, some I have felt some bias. I like your evaluating/intuiting the pickups for what they were aiming for (and yeah on budget guitars sometimes it's more the manufacturer sufficing with, or just a big lot of pickups they negotiated a good deal on). I enjoy when you play varying styles when reviewing a model - versus this says surf, so let's ONLY play surf on it. If the pickups aren't versatile, well, the demo will then illustrate those areas of strength/weakness.

That weird scoop on the back at the neck joint would be for legato shredding at the neck joint with the left hand while using the right hand to hold the guitar upright above the head. This would be consistent w/ the dark pick ups & the flashy finish.

    1) Your format is excellent (IMHO) 2) The Fender "Paisley" Teles have a clear pickguard (FWIW) but I like this "Lesser" Tele and, of course, the "sparkle". The price doesn't hurt. either. I swore off purchasing another guitar but I'm really considering this and adding a vibrato to it. :-) 3) OMFG! Actually, getting paid for time and work is new concept. Huh? I'm in a position to know a few things about some material and electrical engineering and I wouldn't work for what you guys get. I know some of you guys are making a living doing what you truly enjoy and it makes me wonder how I survived 40 years of a career that was my second choice. I bought 2 Leo Jaymz guitars this year and they are both great for the price. I like them so well I am modding them with some upgrades and better pickups, although they were fairly decent and playable out of the box. I also recently got a tele style guitar from a company called Tease Guitars and although it costs more than the Leo Jaymz models I bought, it is perfect out of the box and has a lot of great features that the LJ’s don’t. So in the end, the cost of the Tease will be less than what I spent on a Leo and then modding it and it’s a better guitar.

It actually sounded pretty good! Then you plugged in the Jennings and the difference was more apparent. You can get thin sheets of clear lexan / polycarbonate and cut out inserts to place under the guard. You can make all kinds of options. Thin lexan (1/16" or less) is used quite a bit in the RC (remote control) world so I think it's pretty available

I reckon paisley in predominately pink, purple, blue or green with gold to go under the clear pickguard. I'd have to try all the colours and shades to really decide probably but yeah, paisley in a single complementary colour with gold to pick up on and highlight the sparkle finish.
I reckon that would transform the whole look of the thing from a more 80s rock to 60s psychedelic or perhaps something like you might've seen someone like Prince use in the 90s as a tribute to the psychedelic era
Those pickups are super dark though. They still sound fine but yeah, not like a Tele. Perhaps they could use some height adjustment to dial them in but I'd be interested to know how they read on a multimeter..There are few Ali Express brands (Fleor, OriPure etc.) that make good quality wax potted Alnico V pickups that use the cloth wiring that you can buy for under $20 USD a set.
I have myself bought Fleor Alnico V humbucker and Strat single coil pickups and I've been very happy with those. They very much have a "classic" style tone to them though I'd say so if those are Fleor pickups then I'd say it's likely a custom wound set for this brand/guitar

Love the sparkle finish! Unfortunately, it looks flatter on camera-the closeup shots showed it up better. Pretty amazing guitar for the price! I’d be doing a bridge and pickup swap at the very least-the angle on the bridge pickup is shallower than on a more accurate Tele, and that will certainly affect the sound. Not at all uncommon on budget Teles. Compare it to the bridge pickup angle on your Jennings, and you’ll see what I mean. I didn’t like the neck pickup at all; it’s way too dark and, dare I say it, muddy. I’d put in a good set of vintage-sounding Tele pickups, and probably replace the electronics with full-size pots and a good switch. Locking tuners would be cool too. I’d likely wind up more than doubling the price of the guitar, but $160? For something that’s functional right out of the box and looks that good? Amazing! My first electric was a Teisco-made St George that cost $85, and was not close to being as nice as this Leo Jaymes. It’s comparable to buying a new Fender Telecaster in 1964 for five bucks! Not gonna happen, even then, although I could have had a blackguard early-50s Fender Esquire in ‘64 for $75…Such a deal!

I haven’t seen a bad review of Leo Jaymz yet. If I didn’t already have 6 Tele’s, I would buy this in a heartbeat.
    Maybe for Christmas.

As to your question I view a paid demo as an ad. I can learn the specs and little else.

I started during Covid. The first guitar I bought, while admittedly completely hammered, was a Leo Jaymz. But the next day, I couldn't find a single review of even one of their products on UA-cam, so I canceled my order, and bought a Firefly. No regrets.

Hit that neck with some 1200grit and you'll get that matte finish you want. You should engrave/laser something on the back of the pick guard possibly... a panther.

The pink tele is $149 compared to $169 and $179 on the other flake finishes. How thin is the neck in width and profile? I caught it was fast but compared to what? Ibanez, Ric, etc.

Lol Ryan, I literally just replied on another channel in regard to the question you're asking here, albeit they didn't ask the question. 😂
We all want our fav creators to make a living and continue to grow (I've said this for years). Suffice to say, in most instances, the creators have taken a long time to build up their subscription base and like any other job deserve the monies associated with the time and effort.
Notwithstanding, since the early days of UA-cam & honest reviews, the rise of marketing has grown, so much so, the lines have really blurred between honesty and marketing.
I'm speaking generally, rather than your channel specifically, but way too often these days, channels have become little more than the mouthpieces of large companies.
As such, I wonder if getting paid a guitar for example or a few $1000 equates to the large audience many channels have and the price it would take to advertise in other ways for them to reach such a large audience.
Look at the rise and growth of Sweetwater. Are UA-camrs getting paid accordingly?
It seems that many channels began with honest motives, but a line has been drawn and becomes blurry when a large % of their reviews are little more than blatant advertising (these days).
I'm certainly not knocking a creators need to make a living, it's more about 'buyer beware' becoming greater, along with the fact that testing out gear is becoming increasingly more difficult with the demise of bricks and mortar to a large extent, so the reliance on such reviews for many is greater than days gone by.
To be fair, reviews are for a few between (these days) , whereas demo's are all around us. Whether demos are paid for or not, is largely immaterial, as a demo only seeks out the positives.
Further, I feel many blur the lines even greater as we are not told what post processing (if any) has been used. Sure, we can all do similar, but how many average punters have the kind of set up seen on many channels?
    Cheers fella. 😊

A few replies to a few of your points:
Very few guitar youtubers get paid thousands per demo. I have two basic rates that I charge and for the more involved format that takes me typically 3-4 days to film and produce i only recently in the past year have I starting charging more than $1,000. I typically only get one of those gigs a month, most of my videos are the cheaper/easier unboxing rate. The channels set their rates not the brands so its on the channels to figure out thier worth. We should honestly be charging more, compared to traditional magazine advertising demo videos are much more effective at communicating the details of the product and helping the product find an audience, and its also way cheaper than traditional advertising has been historically.
I started out seeing guitar gear demos as a potential way to make money and augment my living. I came into it being a commercial video professional so I knew what kind of time and resources would go into it so i had no delusions that it would be something just for fun. I don't think its impossible to run demos as a business and also still maintain honesty, many of us do it quite well. The brands aren't paying for our opinions or observations, they are paying for access to our audiences. And we work hard to keep the trust of our audiences.
Post processing is an interesting thing to think about, but a big part of that equation is the speakers the viewer is listening on. There are so many variables that affect the end result that are out of our control. Yes some channels mix like they are in a studio because that is their background, I mix very simply and do the best i can to reproduce what i hear in room. But yeah, all the variables mean that the audience has to conceptualize what a piece of gear might sound like in their own rig.

@@60CycleHumcast Hey Ryan, thanks for your detailed reply it is appreciated. On that note, the majority of times I've written a lengthy comment, you've typically taken the time to respond in kind.😎
I think in terms of 'sponsor' payments you are agreeing with me. Whilst I may not have couched my original comments clearly, I was saying. as you just have, that payments are marginal compared to traditional forms of advertising once were. Yes, you should be getting paid more and yes it's become glaringly obvious in recent times, that this has seen many channels become little more than tools of the industry.
I feel certain that such channels did not intend that to be the case, but earning a living has been the main criteria for most channels.
The mere concept that companies are paying for an audience that in many cases has taken years to foster & do not pay accordingly as we have both said, gives them great power and this change over the past few years has been clear to see. Whereas, previously 'advertisements' were far and few between as such companies did not understand the value of UA-cam.
Whilst you say they are not paying for your opinions/observations, the line is very much blurred what their expectations are, especially when it comes to continued support. Competition on UA-cam in this space has grown significantly & so I doubt channels will receive continued support if they do present the piece of gear in a negative light or even in a 'ho hum' manner.
Whilst some may argue that they solely review objectively, I'd suggest that seems highly unlikely.
After all how many reviews of major branded gear seem unimpressed? I'm yet to hear one review over the years say something like...the pedal is fine as a clone, but with so many other clones out there, including originals still in manufacture, perhaps stick with the others as there's nothing new here! (or something to that effect).
Again, I'm not knocking creators (far from it), merely expressing an opinion of the changing state of many UA-cam channels, which I believe is mostly driven by advertising of larger companies able to invest cheaply.
      Cheers.

    • @60CycleHumcast
      @60CycleHumcast  Рік тому +1

I don't think anyone can be purely objective. We all bring bias and personal experience into everything we do.
There are a TON of gear brands out there, and actually not as many functional demo channels as you might think. Im pretty sure I could piss off one brand a week and never run out of brands to demo for. And most of the gear channels have niches that make them not a good fit for a wide variety of gear so it can actually be tricky for some brands to find channels that work well for them.
"the pedal is fine as a clone, but with so many other clones out there, including originals still in manufacture, perhaps stick with the others as there's nothing new here! " If you are looking for those exact words you might not find them but there have been plenty of times ive looked into the camera and asked the audience what they think, do they think this product has merit over others? it is interesting to them? would they buy it over other options? There have been times when ive said point blank 'this would be a good product for a beginner but an experienced player wouldn't be interested'
We do say these things but in our own ways.

@@60CycleHumcast No doubt Ryan...hard for me to be specific when speaking generally & similarly I'm not at all referring to you.
However, I'd suggest there has been a clear change to many channels I once loved & I feel this is in part (if not largely) due to the lure of the marketing dollar.
I'm pleased to hear that you feel you are in some position to speak freely and if needed to perhaps piss some companies off.
Keep up the great work & above all have fun. :)

I had a purple one, once I removed the pickguard and put it back on as i replaced the neck pickup, i realized the sparkle is a sort of a vinyl layer put over the wood, it starts to flake and crack apart around the screw holes... very cheap. The pickups are very poor, complete with very thin plastic shells and small (short) magnets...... the guitar was very heavy also... mine was I believe 8.0 lbs.
