The Angels. Part of the golden era of Australian pub rock. Brilliant band, via studio or live. Tracks to check out - Mr Damage, I Ain't The One, Who Rings The Bell, Coming Down, Marseilles. Plenty of others. Suggest you check out some studio tracks to get the real sound of their original days. This era of Aussie music rocked, hard, and the only way a band had success was to gig endlessly, night after night, to hone your craft. Other acts of the time include (* = highly recommended) *Rose Tattoo, *Divinyls (look outside the obvious, try songs like Boys In Town, Siren, Hey Little Boy, Tempremental) Skyhooks, *Hoodoo Gurus, INXS, Models, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons (later to morph into *The Black Sorrows) Peace.
I would agree with this comment. In 1978 The Angels upstaged Meatloaf’s “Bat Out Of Hell” concert as his support act at Festival Hall in Melbourne. Meatloaf was good, but The Angels were electric.
We gave the world ACDC but we kept the best for ourselves 😁 check out some Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, Spy V spy .. so many great bands especially in the 80''s. Best live music scene was definitely here in Australia
angel city marseilles, after the rain, cant shake it,the angels no secrets, face the day, fashion and fame, been listening to these guys since the late 70's.
I SAW the Angels earlier this year in Sydney every song, every word was known by every fan there , especially the song " am i ever gonna see your face again" the entire room knew the response and shouted it back every time the question was asked including myself
They have a massive catalogue of bangers - After the Rain (for sure), Shadow Boxer, Marseilles, No Secrets and only ever the live version of 'Am I ever gonna see your face' Australia has a large amount of Pub Rock legends like the Angels - check out Cold Chisel - their version of 'Wild Thing' live in the Last Stand concert - is the greatest live rock track from anyone - ever!
From Wikipedia on Dec Neeson (lead vocals) After completing secondary education, Neeson entered an Adelaide teachers college, "my first career option was to become a teacher, certainly never thought of having a career as a musician".[6] Before completing his course Neeson was conscripted for national service into the Australian army during the Vietnam War.[6] He served as an education corps sergeant in New Guinea for eighteen months in the late 1960s.[6][7] He subsequently attended Flinders University, completed degrees in film and drama, and intended to become a film director.[6]
In the 80's, Zz top toured with The Angels and Rose Tattoo as the supporting bands. Zz top were very polished but Angels blew the roof off. I saw them at the Gold Coast speedway. The 80's in Australia had the best live music.
The Angels (AKA Angel City in the USA) was one of the great bands of the Australian Pub Rock scene. AC/DC, INXS, Midnight Oil, and Men at Work all had international success. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Hidden away in the bars and pubs were bands like The Angels, Cold Chisel, and numerous others who were playing their hearts out 6-7 nights a week in front of drunken crowds who wanted to be entertained. They honed there skills playing up and down the East Coast (1830 miles) with swings across the continent to Adelaide (722 miles from Sydney) and Perth (2445 miles from Sydney). Many, like The Angels and Cold Chisel, played fast and furious, sounded punkish when playing live but TBH they had better playing skills than most of the punk bands that were arising around the same time. I guess the world missed out on what was one of the great rock scenes due to the tyranny of distance and ignorance of the gate keepers in the USA and UK.
The live version of After the Rain you just stared has probably the best and most energetic entrance to a song of all time. Doc was so entertaining and could never stay still. RIP! They we're known as Angel City in the states because of the American 60's group The Angel's name was already taken. They were famous for "My Boyfriends Back".
@@Caracalla68 Yes everyone could. On the northern beaches alones you had choices of the like of the Radiators, Dragon, Mental as Anything etc every weekend for between 5 & 10 bucks. Or, at Festivials like Narara, you could just jump the fence. The best of days.
Its THE Angels and mate I am so glad you ate getting into this super Aussie band from the late 70's onward. Check out the full FACE TO FACE album this song comes from - and thank you. (try the LIVE version of the song called AM I EVER GOING TO SEE YOUR FACE AGAIN - the audience might blow your mind.
One of my favourite bands. As good as ac/dc. Big catalogue. Darkroom, Night Attack are my favourite albums of theirs. Their liveline ( it’s live)album should have been as widely regarded as made in Japan and live in Leeds etc, but the angels never made it big in the states.
There first 5 albums are BANGERZZZ! 1977 - THE, debut face to face 1978 - no exit 79 - darkroom 1980and night attack 1981 They been my fav band 17 years now
Doc Neeson RIP was a great rock the lead singer is now Dave Glesson of the Screaming Jets. The Angels were known in the US as Angel City or The Angels of Angel City as there was already a band called the Angels in the US. Great Australian rock band to Check out in no design order just shooting through my mind. 1. Cold Chisle, 2. Divinyls, 3. Inxs, 4. Men at Work, 5. Icehouse, 6. Australian Crawl, 7. Dragon, 8. Split Enz, 9. Crowd House. 10. Skyhook, 11. John Farnham, 12. John English, 13. Screaming Jets. 14. AC/DC.
Best Angels songs... After the rain. Comin Down. Fashion & Fame. Marseilles. No exit. Mr Damage. Eat City. No secrets. ...Those will get you started. Another AWESOME Aussie pub band from that era is RoseTattoo. Best Rose Tattoo songs... Bad boy for love. Juice on the loose. Rock'N'Roll outlaw, Branded. Butcher & Fast Eddie. Scared for life. One of the boys. ...to get you started.other great Aussie pub bands from the 70s are ac/dc ...(but they are not very well known), Ted Mulry Gang. Stevie Wright. JPY. Marcus Hook Roll band. ...and many more.
RIP Doc Neeson. They have a great catalogue of songs. Check out Am i ever gonna see your face again but it has to be a live version so you can fully appreciate it.
The Holy Triumvirate of Australian Hard Rock. ACDC on the throne, The Angels flanking the right with the sceptre, Rose Tattoo on the left with the sword.
Agree, except for Rose Tattoo. They were ordinary at best (each to their own I guess). Are you familiar with the earlier Sydney band Buffalo, also under-exposed and under-rated but could easily have been world class (imho). Crank up the volume and check them out: ua-cam.com/video/nz7NCvGfvQI/v-deo.html Go Tiges
My first concert back in the late eighties and coincidentally just dragged out their liveline double album for a nostalgia trip on New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately I no longer have a working record player so I just had to stare at it and reminisce 😁
Australia has lots of talented bands that you've never heard of! Many of them 'earned their stripes' in the hard world of Aussie 'pub rock' in that they had to be really good to be taken notice of by the drinkers in the noisy pubs (you may call them hotels or bars.)
The Angels have so many great songs. I've seen them live many times and every time The Angels came to town you knew it was PARTY time. They never dissapointed. Maybe check out Shadow Boxer, Back street pickup, Marseilles and Mr Damage just for starters. Great reaction.
Story goes that The Angels supported The Kinks, probably in the 80s and the places were rocking so much that crowds were demanding encores. Ray Davies didn’t like this and had them kicked off the tour and that was the end of their big break. The world of rock is lesser for it.
A criminally underated band. They should have dominated in the late 70's and early 80's. Didn't help they were known as the Angels in Australia and Angel City in US and Canada. The record company didn't understand the brillance of this band. Try: No Secrets, Night Attack, Darkroom, Marsielle, Am I Ever Gonna See YOur Face again.
Mate I’m 52 grew up on the Angels and have blown many speakers with the Album version of Take a long line & Shadow boxer. U have to listen to the album version of “ Am I ever gonna see you face again “
I was told that they had trouble with the name cuz back in the day there was already a bad at the time named "Angle" ,so you have to look them up as "Angle City" now and they have a lot of cool jams, so you got to check out more of there albums!
I love the story of The angels as a support band outdoing The who in America, telling The angels to tone it down because the crowd will get exhausted by the time the who came out, so they draw a yellow line on the stage which doc was not meant to standover or Cross, now you know how the story goes 😂 anyway after the angels come back to Australia lol
Angels are a great band here in Australia. They have played in the USA with Guns and Roses at some point . In the USA they were called I believe Angel City . The lead singer called " DOC ", RIP DOC, was a legend. AXL from the Gunners sings a tribute to DOC, a great Angels song. Angels are still playing today. ua-cam.com/video/zbYBcFR8UFg/v-deo.html
I went to this weekend like a little woodstock in 1983 and 1984. The place was called Narara , many Australian played over that long weekend. Angels were there, they say this was there greatest ever concert. was awesome. ua-cam.com/video/xDfcDSKnu7I/v-deo.html
Welcome to the Aussie Pub Rock Rabbit Hole you will love this journey.. Angels, Rose Tattoo, Cold Chisel, Australian Crawl, Skyhooks, Hoodoo Guru's, Midnight Oil, Jet, etc etc etc.
Do explorer this underrated/underexposed band. They toured USA but only the North West really appreciated them, Gunners covered their awesome song Marseille. Some song suggestions, Face the Day..Mr Damage..Shadow Boxer..No Secrets..Love Takes Care..😎💙👍
To sell in the USA they had to call themselves Angel City because some band in the US already had that name..... No idea what they recorded though and I guess they faded into obscurity...... Unlike Doc Neeson and the Boys.
Didn't get the recognition they deserved. Am I ever gonna see your face again, is their best known song, live version with the crowd adding to the chorus is a bit X rated though. Plenty of good songs to listen to.
Ok mate u need to listen to the album version of this band , Shadow boxer , Am I ever gonna see your face again , Mr Damage just to name a few , I’m 52 lives in Sydney Australia all my life and grew up with this band during the 80’s

R.I.P Doc Neeson. This was one of the best Aussie bands everrrrr
Australia had soooo many great "pub rock" bands from this era.
uncanny xmen maybe ;)
THE ANGELS ARE definitely the most UNDERRATED rock band of all time !!!!

Angels are a hidden gem. Songs from this concert rock! Check out no exit, after the rain. This was 1979 i think . Doc was the best frontman out there
Hey Brad it was Narara 83 3 day outdoor concert mate.I was there. The Angels headlined the whole shabang.

If you lived in Australia in the 70s and 80s you would've been in rock'n'roll Heaven.
If we didn’t know that then we do now.
Great reaction 👌 you’re about to go down the angels rabbit hole 😁 enjoy 🇦🇺😎
Dogs are talking is one of there iconic songs too.
I heard someone say that the Angels are like AC/DC that went to college - fantastic band!
Someone once called them the thinking man's AC/DC.
also known as angel city
One of the most underrated bands by world standards, but we Aussies know the secret. Two other bands worth checking out are Radio Birdman V SPY V SPY.
One of my favourite songs when I was a teenager. This band was awesome!!!!!
The Angels were so good esp their first decade. They were stablemates on the same record label as AC/DC and Rose Tattoo

The Angels with Doc Neeson and ACDC with Bon Scott - we were blessed growing up with them.
Shadow Boxer , Am i ever gonna see your face again etc , Studio version
