James, I think I speak for many: we love you for your brain, your insight, your humor. Many teachers show off their playing but don't have what you bring to the table. Please keep bringing us content. We all wish you a speedy and complete recovery. We will stay with you whether you are playing on camera or not.

I think Dave Bernas has hit the nail on the head, nothing more to add. Take all the trime you need and think about YOU and don't worry about us. @LOVELY ASSISTANT : pls ensure our dear James James follows the protocol to the letter *I know he will!) NOTE : wouldn't have never guessed you are 53. You are extremely young at heart and this is what makes you special and lovable. I am 58 so yeah, a few bearings and bushings that need to be replaced but it's definitely worth the pain to keep the mechanic in top shape. Stay motivated !!!

Ooooh... just came across this post. I had "frozen shoulder" starting late summer of 2021, and over the course of the winter, it was gawd-awful - And like you describe, sleep was nearly impossible. Despite Omicron raging, I went to see the Doc, and got a RX for physiotherapy. 7 months later, I had regained better range of motion, with less pain - though it's still not 100%. For anybody reading with this condition, I have two notes: 1) The physiotherapy you'll be doing hurts like hell! And 2) Stick with it and do the work... you will get better by doing so. I'm 66, and I guess I have to accept that I may never get back to 100%, but I am able to golf, play guitar (including my acoustics) again, and last longer before the shoulder call it quits for awhile.
I've really enjoyed this YT channel and the instructional videos on this and your other YT channels over many years. They've helped me immensly, especially on some Rolling Stones, open-tunings songs! Even your guitar buying video is sage advice. Keep on rocking!

I stumbled on to your site... am I glad I did! I am a huge Rolling Stones fan since they first started as a band. My best buddy was an avid Beatles fan, so as kids we were always trying to talk each other into thinking one band was better than the other. I like the "bad ass" image the Stones portraited and he like those "Prim and Proper Beatles" in suits. I digress... I am enjoying your lessons and commentary. Well done.. keep on rockin!

Hey bro, sorry to hear about the shoulder problems. I suffered with the same issues for years until I met a Dr. that actually paid attention that class and he had me fixed up after 3 weeks of physio ( 3 times a week). He used a technique called Active Release Therapy. Physiotherapist and chiropracters can do it. No surgury is the best part and it's quick. I met a nurse once who had a frozen shoulder and I recommended A.R.T. I saw her about a month after that and she was 100% (she actually ran up and hugged me). I haven't had any issues in the 15 years since it was done and I haven't babied at all, so it lasts. Love the lessons. Get Well Soon

Wishing you a speedy recovery! Tennis (and riding a bicycle drunk) made for 4 shoulder surgeries for me. Frozen shoulder typically comes post surgery from not doing the PT. With bad shoulders, you need PT for life! Best solution from my experience is swimming 45 mins, twice a week. - half freestyle & half backstroke! If you can’t strum, maybe after a week you could manage an Ebow! Good luck!

James, I had the same thing (frozen shoulder) about 10 years ago. Yes at about your age. It's no fun. I could not lift my arm above my shoulder. Mine did not go away for many months despite all the physical therapy and all that exercise stuff I was told to do. Then I went to an MD who was a doctor for an NFL team. He gave a cortisone shot. That solved my problem completely almost immediately. I hope you recover soon. By the way, I also have both SJ200 and D45. Don't blame SJ200. It is D45 that caused this. You are the best.

Diabetics get calcium deposits that get like stalactites in the shoulder joints and give the same symptoms and HUGE amounts of pain. Spent a year with 3 months of PT, then surgery, right into another 3 months of PT after... Times two shoulders. Yup a whole year 3 times a week. Worth every minute! Hang in there. I remember falling when waterskiing and my arms getting violently yanked hitting the water. Man did that HURT! You'll be doing Townsend windmills soon enough. AND it will feel GOOD! Best to you! Doctor told me when I was out on the table, Several held my body still and he had his foot on my shoulder and side while ripping all that scar type tissue that bound my frozen shoulders, pulling my arm in every direction. Thank God for Anesthesia. LOL It's good that you're in an area with so many top medical options! Done once and right and finished! BTW, the female PT therapists were more cruel than the guys. LOL Oh the PAIN! Keep rockin!

Hope those shoulders are staying healthy! It occurred to me I asked you, I think on the old PT channel, if you ever got an achy shoulder from playing dreads and no smaller body guitars. I asked because I had a Taylor GS (big body, kinda like J-200) at the time and my strumming shoulder was bugging me. You were kind enough to respond, no problems. Then I see the first and of course this one. Not that I'm drawing any correlations, because as it turns out I just bought my first dread, an HD-28. (Last I recall you were loving your Guild dread) Dare I say, it actually feels pretty comfortable and I love the Martin sound. Hope you are well and have a great Christmas JJ!

Sorr to hear about the pain. I know. Suggestion on the acoustic, I bought an inexpensive 000 from a friend who was closing his guitar store. It was a Blueridge with a short scale and 12 frets to the body. It's shallower and lighter and generally easier to play. Way easier to deal with than the big bodied dred, and it still sounds pretty good. Ended up being my goto for just noodling or working out something on the back deck. Best of luck with the surgery and get well quick. Thanks for the update.

You have my sympathies. Trying to sleep with shoulder pain is almost impossible. In 2019 I developed shoulder impingement in my right side. Had cortisone injections that just eased it. Had physical therapy for over two months. More injections. Nothing killed it. Figured I was just going to have to live with it. Last Spring, during a routine visit with my doctor, I asked him for another injection. That one finally did the trick and am now able to sleep through the night. Hope you recover fast.
