Good review, straightforward and unbiased. Most of these low cost replacement rocker arm kits need some serious reworking and when all done the materials are still questionable. It’s a shame because with the proper materials and engineering, even if they doubled the price, they could sell the system as a cost effective alternative.
So the oiling hole in the adjuster and the main body is so that you can use their aluminum cylinder heads on Magnum blocks and do oil through pushrod shaft mount rockers. Now you have to be very precise on the adjusters and make sure the holes line up to get adequate oiling to use this feature which is where guys screw up with these the PRW version of these or way better. They do cost more money but you also get a lot better quality with them. And the reason they hit the retainer is the heads. Use a longer valve than stock which changes the geometry. You're required to use a beehive spring, which in most cases the PAC 1218 is adequate matched up with a set of Howard's 1132 locks and summit Racing branded retainers have done a couple sets of these this way. Now if you shorten down to the 4.9 inch length stock valve, the retainer no longer will hit. However, this is 2023 going into 2024 So updating to a conical or a beehive modern spring package would be the go-to. That is why I order my cylinder heads bare.
I have a feeling speed master stuff will be really cheap at swap meets in the future I think the auto industry should start putting low ball prices on junk like this were everyone knows the price those rockers should not be over 25 bucks used it’s sad that people pay good hard earned money of this type of junk
I think you need to have an understanding of the LA engine. This engine started out as the Poly engine, and then Chrysler changed to the new head design, But they never changed the lifter bore angle. So you have a block with an 59deg lifter bore angle and a cylinder head that was made for a 45deg lifter bore. So the push rod angle is off by 14degs, this why you Never get full lift out of any cam on a SB mopar. But when Dodge was racing NASCAR the first thing they did was fix the lifter bores back to the correct 45deg angle.
My comment about inaccurate rocker arm ratios was a reflection of several small block Chevy rocker tests, not Mopar. I also believe the aftermarket LA’s run a *48 degree lifter angle.
When it comes to the Speedmaster stuff, a few intakes have been pretty good PERIOD. Their engine stuff like distributors, valvetrain and connecting rods, stay clear away from them.
I bought one of their Victor manifold copies. The core shift was so bad I literally threw it in the garbage after they refused to refund me. Speedmaster never again !.
The reason those adjusters are drilled is so you can run LA rocker shafts with LA heads on a magnum block. And you'll have to do some work to them. But what do you expect for 200 bucks? If you can't even buy stamp steel shit for that
I still have my Harland Sharpe roller aluminum rockers from 1975. I had to grind the underside because they interfered with my retainers on my 340 stock heads on my Super Stock engine. What a nightmare getting all the rollers and debris cleaned out on those puppies! Haven't used them since. I went back to the stock 273 adj rockers. My Duster ran 11.50s @ 121mph with those heads with a roller cam.
Prw, 440source, speed master...all junk. Ended up spending 3000$ on roller tipped stainless steel 1.7 ratio bushed shaft t&d rockrs for my last 440 build. Yes I see thats a sbm and f needle bearings
I could, but I’m honestly lazy when it comes to returns. I’ll see how they fit stock 1987 iron heads on my Ramcharger. They would be an upgrade over stock stamped steel rockers that break through the pushrod cup.
I've had nothing but trouble in one way or another buying procomp/speedmaster stuff. I swear I"ll never use the stuff regardless of price anymore. Sick of things not fitting right, poorly made, crap customer support. Building an engine these days is not cheap and to have parts break which will cause massive follow up damage is just not worth it. I'd be really worried about the roller on the tips falling off or breaking ??? Their quality is on a par with Morel lifters.
That’s my general feeling about buying cheap, however it’s been hit or miss for me depending on which product. I really like their BBM victor knock off head, and their thick BBM girdle. I do find that the simple and less moving parts products are harder for them to screw up. Like their BBC rocker arms I reviewed, I don’t see any issues with them.
It’s possible…they can oil through the pushrod. This particular set is designed to oil through the shaft, but they are drilled in the correct places that pushrod oiling should provide sufficient lubrication. Long term there may be some galling where the rocker contacts the shaft. If I were to try pushrod oiling, I would plug the tiny hole in the top of the adjuster screw, forcing the oil to reverse feed into the shaft.
Maybe rewatch the video and read slower. I said aftermarket blocks are 48 degree such as the R block, not 45 degree as you incorrectly stated. The video is indeed about SBM rockers, but my statement about incorrect ratios was based off of several magazine and online reviews of common SBC rockers.
@@racerd9669 lmao. That’s the whole point of articles, to see what others have done or tested and spend your $$ wisely. Same reason I reviewed these rockers and saves someone else from buying them and finding out they hit the retainers and having to return them or eat the cost. To me that’s the whole premise of forums and UA-cam. Feel free to send me 4 or 5 sets of SBM roller rockers and I’ll test them myself. I’ll even get ahold of a 48 degree block and report the difference in lift.
Every single thing i have ever bought, yes, every single one that was Speedmaster/Procomp has been either faulty, very badly made, didnt fit right or garbage quality. I wont buy anything from them any more.
I think it’s hit or miss. Several guys running in the single digits in the quarter mile running speedmasters knock off of the Edelbrock Victor big block Mopar head. I have a few sets, the key is to buy them bare and assemble with quality parts.

I agree, if they were a quality piece I wouldn’t mind paying $350-400 compared to $6-700 name brand rockers.

Couldn't you send them back for a refund and return shipping cost?
Thanks for the review though.

Wrong again, it is 59 degs, so why do you show sb mopar rockers? not other rocker arms?

@@ThirteenTwentyRepair So what you are saying you rely on second hand information and have not done any testing of your own?

Speedbastards 😆I bought rooler rockers for my bbf 460 project. they work ok so far but that's how they spelled it on the box. Rooler rockers
