Fischer thought highly of his games and that should be enough for anyone. Morphy was also a gentlemanly fellow, except for one disconcerting predilection: he never looked up from the board until he was certain it was time for his opponent to resign. He would then raise his head and stare across the board. The opponent would feel the ponderous weight of this gaze and know it was the end. Humiliating, to say the least.
At least Morphy was an adult opponent this time unlike their 1st encounter. Legend has it Morphy was an outstanding King's Gambit player as seen in his 5-1 record against Adolf Anderssen the following year. Thank you for this!
People don’t appreciate how good pre engine players were and they themselves weren’t around so it’s like they can’t relate to those players it’s easier for them to idolize players of today

My 3 favorites, too. I appreciate how good Magnus and Kasparov are, and Lasker and Karpov, too. But Fischer, Morphy and Capa are something else entirely. Tal deserves mention, too

£100 in 1858 would be worth over £10,000 today, so £120 of furniture back then would be over £12,000 today. Helluva lotta furniture. What if Lowenthal didn't want or need more furniture? Better to just give it to him or donate it to a good cause

Morphy spent the 120 pounds as the son of a wealthy man might; unfortunately, when his father later died, Paul took nothing of value under his will. He felt cheated and complained about it the rest of his life.

If Magnus or Hikaru grew up in the time of Morphy, I guarantee today you would never have known their names. Memorizing games and creating games from scratch are two different things.
He's probably not wrong. If Morphy got in a time machine from his era at his peak and participated in any high caliber chess tourney today, he'd most likely lose every game because of the evolution of opening theory. He'd almost always be at a disadvantage out of the opening, and it would be difficult at that point to play his way into a draw or victory against 2500 plus players. Therefore, he'd most likely never advance beyond 2500 because of that. Speaking of his talent level is another story. Had he been born in modern times with modern chess engines to study from, no telling how good he would be. I suspect, as many others, that he probably would be on the shortlist of strongest ever.
The key to Morphys skill is that rockin' hairdo! If you see that, youre either Paul Morphy or a depressed teen emo type dressed all in black expressing pessimism in each sentence. I tell ya, its the 'do!
