  • Coming up on May 7 in Japan, former undisputed world bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue will challenge the unified WBO/WBC junior bantamweight champion Stephen Fulton. This one is a spectacular match-up, and both boxers deserve tremendous credit for making it happen, with The Monster challenging for the unified championship in his first bout at 122, and Cool Boy Steph traveling to Japan in his opponent’s home country. There is a lot to be excited about for this championship bout between two prime undefeated prizefighters, and this one could potentially become a Fight of the Year caliber contest.
    So who will win the upcoming junior featherweight championship contest between Stephen Fulton and Naoya Inoue.
    This video will attempt to answer that question while providing a quick preview to the upcoming bout between Cool Boy Steph and The Monster.

    Unfortunately I just read that the fight was postponed because of an injury suffered by Inoue. Of course, this happened a mere 9 hours after I published this video. But assuming the fight still happens and is simply pushed back, I stand by the prediction.
    Also correction, in the beginning I mentioned Fulton was the unified Jr Bantamweight champion, and I meant to say Jr. Featherweight. My mistake.

      @@vishnu2407 the problem with this assumption is the fact that Fulton chooses to trade on the inside and that's a statement to his inside IQ and defensive prowess. He doesn't have to fight that way, he could easily win on points but he decides to trade, especially in the later rounds.
      Simply cut
      - Fulton has crafty defense.
      - Intelligent elusive footwork on the outside.
      - A jab that maintains distance, but is ultimately used to gather data on the opponent.
      - His most underrated skill is his inside game.
      Inoue, needs a work rate higher than Figueroa. I don't see that happening. If Fulton decides not to engage, Inoue has to play against his own style and chase and capture Stephen down for 12 rounds.
      That isn't good.

    One thing left to consider - Fulton was supposed to move up to 126lbs since he was starting to struggle making 122lbs. Meanwhile, Inoue was outgrowing 118lbs, hence the move up. If Fulton can't make weight in a good way for this fight, he may struggle a LOT physically. That being said, I think Fulton knows this and will be better prepared this time around for the cut.
    I have seen a lot of doubts on whether or not Inoue's power will move up with him, but I think it will. While the Monster does have a freakish talent for hitting hard, especially for his size, Inoue himself says that his KO ability stems more-so from his insane timing and accuracy - which won't go away at 122lbs.
    I'm incredibly excited for this fight. I will be on the edge of my seat and sweating the whole way through. May the best man win!

      what top names has Inoue fought? Donaire? yeahhhh thats about it. Fulton has fought a prime undefeated Figueroa, beat a prime undefeated Angelo Leo, and he beat Daniel Roman who was the former unified champ and many thought he beat MJ. I think Fulton has the better experience. Inoue may have had more belts, but the opposition was weak. and don't give me the ridiculous argument that he fought good opposition and I just don't know the fighters in the smaller divisions. I do know them, and they're not impressive talents. if Inoue had wins against names like Chocolatito, or el Guillo Estrada or Carlos cuadras or Sor rungvisai I'd be impressed... but he doesn't. his best win besides an ancient Donaire is Emannuel Rodriguez and that isn't saying much for elite level competition.

    This might be the highest level fight we will have this year! Two extremely smooth operators who are easily the best in their respective weight classes. I do think that Inoue has enough pop to get Fulton's attention, but I'm not so sure he will be able to knock him out. Fulton has proven to have a pretty sturdy chin and definitely the will to win. Truly a great 50/50 fight in my opinion. Honestly, I'm just excited this fight is happening! Back to the roots of boxing, where the best fight the best. Now, if only we could get the best to fight each other at 147...

  • @ltravail
    @ltravail Рік тому +15

    Both fighters will be facing a type of opponent that is novel for each man...Inoue has never faced a fighter who can stick-and-move like Fulton, and Fulton has never fought an opponent as dangerous and quick as Inoue. If we could see how each camp is training for their novel opponent, it might be easier to make a prediction. For instance, it would be helpful to know what type of fighters each man has been sparring with during training camp. Nevertheless, we can make presumptions based on what we know of both fighters, as of right now, that might point to a most likely outcome.
    As he always does, Inoue will go into this fight looking for the knockout opportunity. Given the type of opponent Fulton presents, one can presume that Inoue is training and scheming for ways to get past Fulton's long, quick jab to get on the inside, and on how to prevent Fulton from quickly pivoting and weaving out of range (which he does beautifully) long enough to do some damage when they do find themselves in close quarters. It's also been rumored that Inoue has been training with HOF trainer Freddie Roach...specifically working on his defense. I don't think Inoue is particularly concerned about Fulton hurting him, so I'd presume Roach is working with him on his inside game, on how to deal with a "slick" superbly athletic and mobile opponent like Fulton...on how to score and defend in close-quarters combat with the bigger Fulton. I expect Inoue to go into the fight with a well thought-out game plan with a knockout being the ultimate goal.
    Fulton, on the other hand, is much more of a reactive fighter (as Rummy insightfully noted) whose focus will be on steering clear of the Monster's devastating punch power. Unlike the Inoue camp, though, the Fulton camp will be training and scheming for a win by decision...since Fulton knocking out Inoue is almost inconceivable. So I imagine Fulton's plan for fighting Inoue is a bit simpler than Inoue's plan to KO Fulton. Fulton, I presume, is training hard on the things he does best...evasion and escape, effective jabbing, counter-punching, and volume punching with punches designed to score and accumulate points rather than to hurt his opponent.
    Fulton's highest priority will be to frustrate Inoue, and he'll probably take a page from the Inoue-Butler fight to do that...simply go into a shell and refuse to engage the opponent, causing him to punch himself out. But Fulton has much more of a fighter's mentality than Butler. If he can get Inoue to fall for the "rope-a-dope", and then, unpredictably, from time to time come out of the shell and spring an attack on a frustrated and desperate Inoue using his longer jab and excellent countering capabilities, Fulton could very well pull off a stunning upset of the Monster in his own backyard. (Parish the thought!) I presume Inoue is much too smart to fall for the "rope-a-dope" tactic, but it's still in Fulton's best interest to use such tactics (along with his superb clinching and grappling techniques) to try to neutralize Inoue by frustrating him. Using such an approach, Fulton may very well be able to use Inoue's aggressiveness and desire to win by KO against him. But I've got presume that Inoue will be prepared for those "Paul Butler" type tactics Fulton may try to employ.
    Both men are tremendously skilled and athletic fighters. But power is usually the differentiator between two outstanding boxers. There's no comparison between Fulton and Inoue in the "power" category. So that is Inoue's edge in this fight. But it's the "intangible" factors that will be the biggest difference. Fulton is stepping into the brightest spotlight on the biggest stage he's ever experienced, whereas almost every Inoue fight has been under the bright lights in front of huge crowds. And Inoue clearly has the hometown advantage as well. Inoue is carrying the weight of a nation on his shoulders when he steps into that ring. The pride and glory of the entire nation of Japan is in his hands whenever and wherever he fights. And that is a huge motivation for Inoue...he simply cannot lose this fight - especially in front of his adoring hometown fans - because he knows the impact it would have not only on his own career aspirations, but also on the psyche of the Japanese people. Fulton, on the other hand, does not have that motivation and responsibility. Fulton is accountable to no one but himself in this contest.
    So, can Fulton win? Possibly. Will he win? Not likely. All things being equal, my forecast is Inoue by TKO by the 10th round.

I'm not sure Fulton has enough pop to dissuade Inoue, I see him being ground down to a stoppage between 8 and 10 after a competitive start. The way Inoue dealt with Donaire in their rematch was shocking, he's on another level at the moment and is my P4P number 1 and he's only going to be stopped by fighting guys way out of his natural weight division, should he choose that path.

      it wont be neither, fulton already said hes going to fight smarter and fight from a distance. So hes busting a mayweather and running. Unless fulton comes in fighting like how he did with figueroa then maybe we can have that but he isnt that type of fighter to fight like mexican style. Donaire vs inoue 1 was great because both are offensive fighters, thats the only way we will get fight of yr or decade from fulton but hes more defensive

    Very intriguing fight, as Inoue has seen most styles, but he has not seen someone so slick in their prime. If Inoue "solves" Fulton, I think he stops him late. If Fulton frustrates him with angles and wily defense (while minding the jab), he might get a decision.

    Hey Quasimodo over there 😉👍 this is Truly a pure 50 / 50 fight , as Rummy said it comes down to the very slight subtleties, I agree wholeheartedly with this analysis, with Fulton being reactive and Naoya being selective 🥊 it will definitely go The 12 , they are both Warriors and highly skilled in all Boxing Departments, footwork, lightning quick counters and no wastage of shots, this is a beautiful boxing match up , I too take Naoya Inoue with more precise inside work and those relentless accurate shots , but what do I know , I've been watching Boxing meticulously since the 70's , This Could Really Be Fight of The Year 🏆🏆🏆🏆🥊💯🔥👏👏👏👏😉

    There is no way Fulton can last 12 rounds of this level of power. He's never fought anyone with big power, and Naoye has BIG BIG power. KO in 5. Or less. I would not be surprised at all to see a 1st or 2nd round knockout. Fulton gets hit a lot. Especially to the body. That's a real bad matchup. People making a big deal about 4 pounds. The weight wont be a factor at all. Big power vs little power is ALWAYS a disaster folks.

  • @Honkiavelli
    @Honkiavelli Рік тому +1

    Inoue's power will be the decisive factor in this fight, given that it will slow down Fulton and take away his legs. Rummy used the "3 S", but I prefer the "3 P": Power, Pressure and Persistence. Inoue masters all 3 and will slowly dismantle Fulton.

      that doesnt make sense lol, so your going by just pure confidence? Cuz inoue did the same thing, he became undisputed and vacated belts less than 2 weeks and challenged fulton, not even 1 tune up fight. If your going by confidence then inoue wins this match lol. I like inoue but i wanted him to at least do 1 tune up fight. Other than that, inoue still going to win, hes just more special fighter like pac, canelo, loma, mike tyson

  • @boundsgreenboy8354
    @boundsgreenboy8354 Рік тому +2

    @evanglas58 Рік тому +3

    I have great respect for both of these fighters. I think they will both win from their meeting, also, and their careers going forward will continue to be thriving. As for my prediction? Much like Rummy, I think Naoya Inoue wins a UD, possibly with a knockdown added. I'm searching my memory for whether cuts might be an issue and I doubt it. I'll offer a prediction on the score of 115 - 112 in favour of Inoue... (Remember, it's purely speculation on my part based on knowing both fighters pretty well)

    I just don't see how anyone can beat Inoue in his Prime. Fulton has the Philly resourcefulness, and points style boxing (BORING), but Inoue is a metered Hunter, who won't take bait and waste his resources on a Philly shell or anything else. Inoue WILL find openings.. he WILL pressure Fulton, he WILL beat him to the punch, and he has that devastating KO power.
    Wish I could travel to watch this fight in person!

  • @GRF64
    @GRF64 Рік тому +1

    50/50 fight although I am edging it to Inoue. Fulton is good defensively but he does get hit and he hasn't been hit by someone like Inoue. I do disagree with people acting like Fulton has to run the entire fight, he has an underestimated inside game.
    No matter the outcome they both should get their credit. Not many other people in boxing are doing this. Inoue is going up in weight and taking on the best fighter in that division in his first fight. Fulton is going to Japan against one of the top p4p fighters today.
    However, the sad thing with boxing today is whoever loses will be called a bum and that they were no good to begin with. Those who take risks are the ones who get criticised when they lose. I give more credit to a fighter who loses when testing themselves then a boxer taking easy fights just to stay undefeated.
