A bit of a tirade: When they changed the art style for Jake Long, I remember being super disappointed. I was obsessed with dragons, but found a majority of dragons in western media (specifically directed at children) had lame or goofy dragon designs. But Jake's was cool. I'm mixed race and really related to Jake and his family, especially mixed race (of anything) was kinda unusually in tv shows. It made sense to me that the dragon form would represent his western side since he was the American dragon (we had seen other dragons also reflect the place they came from). Not sure if other mixed kids can relate to this, but an annoying thing to hear growing up whether from people irl or in media make comments to the effect of 'you're not [blank] enough' or that only your nonwhite side matters. So when I saw Jake's new form, which resembles his grandfather's form (totally didn't clock that it was supposed to be a teen dragon), it felt like Jake's American heritage didn't matter at all. Anyway I know it wasn't a big deal, but the experience stuck with me because it was the first time I felt let down by something I related a lot too.
One thing I wish they would've done for Jake Long, is have the first episode of the season dedicated to Jake realizing a slimmer dragon form made it easier for him to fight
Damn, if there was only five months between seasons of Jake Long then they would have already been working on the redesigns while season 1 was initally airing lol. Theres no way they could redesign every character and produce an entire season of tv in that amount of time lol
alot of these changes I never noticed when I was a kid, expect american dragon jake long XD but I do miss the different art styles we had in the 90's and early 2000's,changing a show to a permanent art style lost the unique art styles I loved
There also a show that changed it art style from early seasons to later seasons. I'm talking My Little Pony Friendship is Magic (G4). Even though it's a reboot from the 1986 original series. The reboot also changes it's art style from looking hand drawn to computer drawm with brighter colers and the outline ecen looks thickers
Its funny how American Dragon was only the second time a cartoon about dragons that aired on a Disney branded network in the us had a complete artstyle change in it's second season
1:30 Ben 10 Classic Ben 10 UAF Ben 10 Destroy all Aliens Ben 10 Race Against Time Ben 10 Alien Swarm Ben 10 ,Generator Rex; Heroes United Ben 10 Omniverse Ben 10 2016
That justice league animation was also used for the 2003 teenage mutant ninja turtles animated series , I really hope that kim possible / justice league art and animation makes a comeback
My personal art style is heavily influenced by "simplicity", most memorably used in My Life as a Teenage Robot, Steven Universe, and later on Netflix's Hilda, I wish a whole series could be animated in that art style❣️🫥✍️🏼
I always joked that Steven looked like a rugged up late 20's man in the pilot He somehow looked the most uncanny from everyone and he's supposed to be the most human-like. And again, obligatory mention how OK K.O. had a very specific artstyle made by noticing a storyboarder's name, and you'd be like "Oh, Mira Ong Chua drew this, oh Danny Ducker drew this, oh, Dave Alegre drew this incredibly gross and disgusting and great drawing." XD
Yeah it may be a bit strange with The eyes but I’ve grown to like it over the years when I first saw it I honestly didn’t mind the change Scar crow on the other hand looks like something out of your nightmares
bro dont even look at american dad, the fox seasons are super consistant with the models, in the tbs era there pupils are bigger and smaller, mouth shapes are just off and rogers design (besides his personas as that sometimes changes him a bit) is just super inconsistent with eye shapes and mouth movements.
When I was watching the show I didn’t mind the art style change in season two but rewatching multiple times I felt like should have kept the design for the huntsman villain group and Jake’s dragon designs should have been reversed
To be fair, that's probably cause the changes were relatively minor (In that the changes didn't drastically altered their overall look when taking the show as a whole).
What I find strange about Jake Long's art style change is how it affected the Huntsclan's design. For season 1, the art style was a bit more grounded with the character designs, whereas season 2 went a bit more exaggerated with the designs to enhance the magical creatures' design more. Most of the character's designs of these seasons fit these approaches however there are a few exceptions to this status quo and one of those characters is the Huntsclan. In season 1 the Huntsclan design is weirdly way more exaggerated in season 1 with the glowing eyes and hoods, but then their entire aesthetic changes in season 2 to have a more grounded approach to the design with a basic uniform for all the characters in the clan. The season 1 Huntsclan design philosophy fits more in season 2, and 2's philosophy fits better in 1, I'm not sure why that's the case but I thought it is fun to point out.

For CN I think the heavy influence and traction of kids forced to watch Teen Titans Go! Is what made many of the 2016 shows look the same and feel that way, CN definitely gambled thinking “all kids love this show so all WE gotta do is pump more shows like this” which failed, I can forgive shows like American Dragon, Ben 10 Omniverse and OK KO as those shows work for what you expect, but The Powerpuff Girls 2016, Ben 10 2016 and the boastfulness of Teen Titans Go celebrating being the longest running show also showing this is why these changes have happened is where I think CN really took a nose dive. At least with Gumball, Regular Show, Steven and Infinity Train they all were unique and aimed to go for the older audiences as if they are saying “we see you”, the cutesy, baby style just feels like the network is actively calling you stupid saying “yeah we aim for kids but we do this so you don’t watch it” and I think that’s wrong as if shows like Bluey or the CN renaissance showed there’s a whole audience group that would watch it if you don’t actively make your shows not even tolerable to sit through, like at least with shows that aim for kids at 3-7 they know it, but the kids who are 9-12 don’t need to have brain rot both online and on TV it’s just not fair.
I remember when Cyberchase went to a different animation style starting with season 6... and I will say.... the new animation style is kind of stiff. Seasons 1 through 5 had the traditionally hand drawn animation which fit the show even more. The old animation was PERFECT!!
I will never get used to the art style change for Evil Con Carne. The new look was way too different compared to the original, not to mention I personally do not find the new look appealing. Its sister show Billy and Mandy had a much better art style change that was not as drastic.
American Dragon Jake Long's art style change was one of the biggest Ls of all time. The original style was WAY BETTER. Like what the hell were they thinking!? Especially with the new dragon form. TRASH.
Jake Long's dragon form change from season 1 to 2 will forever be the most annoying to me, I remember how much I hated it. I actually stopped watching the show. All these years later, it's more absurd if you think about his parents. His mother is Chinese-American and his father is White, so the buff form from season 1 could be a nice nod to western depictions of dragons, and tie dragon forms to genetics in ways that would add depth to the whole phenomenon. His grandfather being fully Chinese, has the longer slimmer build associated with eastern depictions of dragons. But in season 2, they erased what made this whole dissonance between his and his grandfather's dragon forms interesting. The S1 to S2 change feels like cultural erasure, removing one half of jack's heritage for a rebrand? I personally don't think the producers meant to do anything bad, but they could have done more to research dragons outside of the original concepts. In todays age of reboots of old series, I hope they choose the S1 dragon form if a sequel is ever considered. Also, make the Australian dragon an Aboriginal Australian or part Aboriginal. I get they wanted to avoid making Fred Nerk as such, because they feared having him be an antagonist would be a no-no. But that doesn't matter, since he winds up becoming buds with jake in the end anyway? Again, they scrapped having Jake duke it out with an Aboriginal Australian in The Dragon Summit, only to have him whitewashed AND become friends with Jake? I guess they never thought about this, they should have stuck with Fred being an Aboriginal Australian if this was supposed to be his arc of rival to friend in that episode.
I for one didn't like avatar series changing animation style, I liked avatar the last airbender more than the legend of Korra with its less serious designs and more expressive
I'm thinking so much of Miraculous Ladybug at the moment!!! Season 6 has been leaked and it looks SO INCREDIBLY FREAKING DIFFERENT from seasons 1-5 (Also Adrien is ugly now)
Scooby doo series dont count either, same piwerpuff girls, hard to say, simce technically theier all the sane series and not seperate ones like ben 10 and the scooby doos

Honestly wished that they kept Jake long's art from the first season For the whole series. SPECIALLY His dragón form
True
Yeah. It was Hard for me to keep seeing the series after some point because I HATED that artstyle.
i agree dragon forms look like their head modified on lizard body with wings
Mixels changed animation styles starting with A quest for the lost Mixamajig
As one of the dozen other people who remember the 2011 Thundercats, I see you Vox
I had a weird itch for a video like this, legendary.
This channel always provides perfect content 👌
Been one of my favorites over the years.

Is there any chance that American Dragon Jake Long will return someday for a new reboot ?
I hope so

I'm a simple person. I see something of ADJL in UA-cam, I automatically see it
I swear I read it as “When the cartoon art styles”

Wow so many different art styles

I feel like I’m part of the minority that likes the artstyle of American Dragon in season 2 over season 1.
My ass thought it was just puberty so I was like yep trixie now looks like a chick cuz she got boobs too
I think there were some styles that improved, and others that didn't. But I do think that the plot improved during season 2
Definitely your in minority, not me though
I remember noticing the change in art style for American dragon, and honestly didn’t feel too bothered by it.
Honestly same but I felt like should have kept the design for the huntsman villain group and Jake’s dragon designs should have been reversed
15:01 I wish they got there own animated films like classic did
I drastically prefer The New Batman Adventures style. Bruce looked too old with that cheek line, and I prefer the square jaw.
You should make a video about what an Amphibia Owl House Gravity Falls crossover.
Excuse me but there was a Buffy cartoon wtf why have I never heard of this
I didn’t even notice the art style changes in gravity falls other then the pilot until now
Because they were rather minor and unnoticeable unless pointed out.
5:25 he looks like quetzalcoatl of the color scheme
10:42 I still like it

15:46 or as a slice of life
When I was watching the show I didn’t mind the art style change in season two but rewatching multiple times I felt like should have kept the design for the huntsman villain group and Jake’s dragon designs should have been reversed
@theroundtable can you please make a video on jentry chau vs the underworld. it was such a good show and it NEEDS to be talked about more
13:26 it’s like avatar
I love when cartoons switch things up for the better
I will never get over what they did to Jake Long. They massacred my boy.
All Grown Up and The Replacements both changed their art styles after Season 1
The one you are not allowed to say anything nice about, lmao 😂. Love this video and very informative
Gravity falls is great example of when it's done right 🎉🎉🎉🎉
To be fair, that's probably cause the changes were relatively minor (In that the changes didn't drastically altered their overall look when taking the show as a whole).
Funny seeing this video while watching American Dragon

we need another american dragon
Yk American Dragon is justified if the second design was introduced as the first season then evolve to the first season couldve been a story of growth
Ok I have never seen the gravity falls pilot and seeing it her jumped right into the uncanny valley for me
How weird. I just went back to that video like an hour ago.
NGL I kinda like the Joker's new look in the New Batman Adventures.
I remember when Cyberchase went to a different animation style starting with season 6... and I will say.... the new animation style is kind of stiff. Seasons 1 through 5 had the traditionally hand drawn animation which fit the show even more. The old animation was PERFECT!!
I love the new style for American dragon. Its just the show turned a buff cool chad dragon to a virgin snake
Honestly i didnt care about the change of american dragon, it also didnt change with the style so that helped too.
LMAO I LOVE CARTOONS CHANGING STYLES

I love all art styles funny to serious then a mix
Personally, I prefer the season 2 art style for American dragon
19:08 it's more like American dad scooby doo
Ben 10 Omniverse art style reminds me of transformers animated style
They have the same character designer, Derrick J. Wyatt(RIP), who also did the designs for Teen Titans and Mystery Inc
I love art style more weird and different cute looks to scary look
I thought you were gonna lightly mention the art style change from miraculous ladybug,oh well😔
ben10 ov artstyle is peak imo

Just saying, Ben 10 Omniverse was the best looking version of the franchise 🗣️
I’m sorry but in general AmDrag season 2’s art style was better
Yay ❤
I'm thinking so much of Miraculous Ladybug at the moment!!! Season 6 has been leaked and it looks SO INCREDIBLY FREAKING DIFFERENT from seasons 1-5 (Also Adrien is ugly now)
i prefer the new art style in american dragon

American dragon didnt refine, it destroyed its art style, season one art style was alot better
Ben 10 doesnt count, cause their not differnt seasons, yes some connect to one another story wise, but its different series not seasons
No joke i stopped watching american dragon the second it changed
Yeah why
I actually like the new art style in season 2
Oh my I’m early
First somehow
Nah. Baby Doll looked much better before the change. It's WB. You just praised the whole Disney look that Jake Long had.
Ai is for science(unfortunately) not for the arts
I always thought Jake Long's season 2 dragon form looks stupid asf.
