  • Milan Fashion Week has become more and more of a style juggernaut over the past few seasons, as Italian fashion brands have boosted their social credit by getting stars to feature on the runway, both in terms of celebrities as models and with designers showing some memorable collections. This season saw sophomore collections by Matthieu Blazy at Bottega Veneta & Glenn Martens at Diesel, which was impressive. While Maximilian Davis' Ferragamo debut was jaw-dropping, making fashion feel alive again! Unfortunately, Alessandro Michele showed his last Gucci collection, which was unbeknownst to us all at the time! And the daughter's of the Real Housewives also swept through the fashion week with Lisa Rinna's daughter Amelia Gray walking Diesel, Yolanda Hadid's daughters Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid and Kathy Hilton's daughter Paris Hilton all walking Versace.

The Moschino collection is about inflation. Jeremy explained it to Loic Prigent. The Prada collection looks like a mockery of corporate life. The wrinkled ensembles (stress), the shirtsuits that look like baby onepeices, the nightgowns for the workers who never leave the office and the trains for the people who are married to their jobs.

I’m just starting to pay more attention to high fashion, so I’m learning. But why does this sound like the ruling class exploiting the struggles of every day people (who are affected by inflation and work in corporate offices) as inspiration for art (fashion) for other ruling class people to gawk at and spend ungodly amounts of money on? To a struggling person like myself, it feels very off-color.

@Audrey Chanel fashion has always been about social/cultural responses. However, in the past, it was inspired by high society, and the "plebs" would try to adapt it for themselves. The democratisation of fashion and the way we consume fashion has changed that.

There's some shows that just make me think of the Dolly Parton quote about how it takes a lot of money to look trashy. Moschino looked like costume design rather than couture, but I give them leeway since kitsch is kind of their aesthetic like Betsey Johnson and their fans are into it. Different strokes for different folks. Personally, I love watching highly detailed extravagant clothing that I'd never wear. Iris Van Herpen is not wearable in my life, but each piece is a work of art.

Luke, I appreciate you taking the time to dedicate a concise segment in the Gucci chapter to talk about the cultural and historical inspiration of the Chinese designs. I am from the Chinese diaspora, and in my personally opinion, they are appropriative. End of. But Orientalism is such a design staple for a lot of Western fashion houses, for centuries now, that you could only elicit an eyeroll reaction from me at the most, because I'm so use to seeing the designs being cycled throughout the decades. I understand for Chinese people who are native to China and Asia i.e not born to immigrant families in countries outside of Asia like I am, might like the idea that other cultures are taking inspiration from China (because we're all about that cultural soft power these days), but even then I would suspect that they would look upon this Gucci collection with polite confusion, because the design elements and colours would have been taken out of context and refitted through non-Chinese lens e.g the lilac purple gowns with the fitted qipao bodice and flowy pleated sleeves and skirts are probably the most quintessential Orientalist silhouette (a mish-mash of the qipao's high mandarin collar, the knot buttons (pankou) aka frogging, and the long sleeves from Japanese kimono or Chinese hanfu). As for whatever if I find it acceptable or not - I mean, it is what it is. Gucci's version is a slight improvement over Louis Vuitton's S/S 2011 collection, because at least I can see that the embroidery could be vaguely referencing the Qing-dynasty style. All in all, it's a tired, exotifying trope executed mediocrely once again - the badly fitted mandarin collars (for me, the beauty is in the high, stiff collars, flush against the neck, rarely scene since the 60's à la In the Mood For Love); the awkward and chunky piping; and what looks like to be metal coat hooks, instead of handmade fabric knot buttons, which can still be made entirely by hand by Chinese artisans in elaborate and auspicious designs. The one thing that I genuinely liked from the Chinese-inspired collection was the inclusion of a modern dudou or "bellyband" - a completely backless halterneck top or apron that was originally worn as an undergarment - which manifested as the white embroidered fitted crop top with the curved hem and mandarin collar, and the pink brocade bib top with the curved hem and pie-crust collar. There was a revival of the dudou during the early 2000's as clubwear or as a tourist souvenir, and I bought mine from London Chinatown (white polyester brocade with a wide, curved gold border). Perfect for Y2K clubbing. P.S I wish everyone a Happy Lunar New Year~

I actually really enjoyed the moschino show. I felt that, like you said, the outfits looked kitschy but still very fun. The bags were cute and I felt the theme was very interesting and an out of the box way of thinking about inflation. I really enjoyed the bright colours and while some looks felt a little uninspired, the whole show in general felt playful and on brand. I’m a sucker for a throwback to the original designer so loved the touch of the symbols used by the original moschino creator.

What is striking to me is that the Prada collection, especially the sweater sets, have a spectacular "big sister" feel to the Miu Miu ultramini collections, that if you would immediately guess that the two houses were related even if you weren't in the know. House codes - perfected.

I've been a fin of your channel for a while now... and I (literally) had NO IDEA why couture even existed or what it's objectives were until after carefully watching, now I image couture is (supposed to be) the lab stage: where all risks and tests are run before what seems accessible filters down the industry's levels until it reaches the common retail market. Now I understand the frustration it may come with the lack of true experimentation with new alternative fabrics and/or constructing methods to create the pieces that would truly provide an architectural support and thus giving the body and all it's wonderful imperfections a carefully structured tailoring that would flatter the human body and fill it with confidence. Thanks for the help learning to appreciate couture as the laboratory of risqué, evolution and sometimes creepy but necessary change towards exploration of the new thatbit should be. I no longer regard it as a nest of elitistic self-indulgent behavior I always thought it was.... love from Paraguay.

Thank you, Luke, for yet another, informative, insightful, and entertaining review! Your breadth of knowledge is astounding. As someone myself who has just begun to dabble in an interest in fashion (thanks to you), I would like your opinion on the Little Books of Fashion Series by Welbeck Publishing. You have quite the fashion library yourself, and I was thinking of acquiring these cute little volumes as a jumping off point to expand my own knowledge. In fact, may I even suggest as a possible video topic, reviews of fashion books? You could start with building a basic library, then do further reviews of more spectacular tomes such as the Tom Ford double volume slip cased set? Just a thought...

Prada,I like a wrinkle. I wear linen in the summer ,because its supposed to wrinkle. No need to iron. A lot of fun looks in your post. Thanks , for the great work you do. Happy new year!!!!!!!!

I must say that I so enjoy your writing! The way you use words to describe the garments etc is just fabulous! I work with special needs kids (love my job but NO FASHION is involved, obviously) and live with my cats, so I don't speak to adults (other than with teachers in reference to what's happening at work) so I love to watch your channel and listen to your educated and beautifully written narrative!! Thanks so much Luke, for keeping my brain working and my knowledge of fashion improving with each of your vids! Much Love from Northern Cali 💖💜💖

Those dresses by BV were godawful 👀 the leather work & tailored black pieces were divine 🤌🏽 and I can't believe i'm saying this but Gucci was a fun one. Love the fresh Ferragamo. Prada was austere & crude & lovely. The rest, I don't care for. Great review, Luke 🥂
