      also interested for our double Hip & Valley roof plans in NM, where you need about 4ft out at 10ft height to shade 4-5mo of summer sun angle. at 7000ft over sea level, shade gets pretty important!

    A very nice home. If an EF5 tornado hit the home the weakest parts would be windows and garage doors. I plan to have a much smaller single story ICF home built with a similar concrete roof; metal frame storm windows with security screens; metal storm doors with security screen doors; hurricane garage doors with roll down hurricane shutters.
    An EF5 tornado can generate wind speeds of 300 MPH + with flying debris at speeds of 150 MPH. Storm windows, hurricane garage doors, storm entry doors may handle 150 MPH winds, however for added security and safety the metal security screening over the windows and entry door should lessen the winds force on them along with the debris hitting the high impact security screens at 150 MPH which should absorb that impact; not the windows or doors.
    There are few videos showing an ICF home after being hit by an EF5 tornado and those homes did not have a ICF roof; all that was left were the walls. The roof was gone because it WAS NOT ICF and just a standard roof; there were no windows any doors or anything in the home because everything was sucked out of the home. It looks as if no storm windows etc were used. If these homes were built with an ICF roof, storm windows and doors with security screen etc. those homes would likely still have all their belongings with only damage to the exterior. Making the entire home more of a EF5 tornato proof structure. A better way to protect your fanily and pets.

      I doubt any economical option exists for glass that would survive an EF5, but metal storm shutters certainly do. If budget were no object you could use bullet-resistant glass or very, very thick impact-resistant polycarbonate. For garage doors, look into single-piece hydraulic doors (e.g. Schweiss, PowerLift) like they use for aircraft hangars. I can't recall the company, but I've seen an example of one of those systems used on a garage door that had a full brick facade on it to make it "disappear" when closed, weight isn't really an issue for them and they have mechanical interlock systems to backup the hydraulics.

      @@dwaynesykes694 The mandates in the Miami-Dade area for windows and doors would help, since those are SUPPOSED to be able to stand up to a Cat 4 hurricane. Yes, a lot less powerful than an EF5 twister but it's a step in the right direction.

  • @frauleingermany4435
    @frauleingermany4435 Рік тому

    Wow 3 12 pitch that is pretty good can they pour 7 12 pitch? So the rebar did ICF form people give you the diagrams for the rebar ties and the rebar positions? I just know they have to be at the neutral axis and they might need to have pretension threaded bars for torque specification and corresponding tension. Did they give you details for that or did you have to find someone to design that part for your house?

  • @Clark-Mills
    @Clark-Mills 2 роки тому +4

    1:23 Might your "candy-canes" have been better placed to have the long rebar at the top rather than the bottom?
    Even better, run the short rebar a few feet back up the roof.
    The tension will tend to be in the top rebar at the roof-wall junction rather than in the bottom bar.
    Nice work regardless and I'm just an armchair expert so please feel free to educate me! ;)

    • @rickrudd
      @rickrudd Рік тому

      I was wondering the exact same thing - seems the tension is all at the "short end" of the cane (where it stops) as opposed to the long side, and it would make sense to have the short side on the bottom. But, like you, I'm yelling from the cheap seats :)

  • @christopherbeddoe406
    @christopherbeddoe406 2 роки тому +2

    Very cool. This looks like it costs about 3x building a traditional roof.
    They built a roof to hold the concrete roof while being poured. They have to brace it then all the rebar work.
    When it's done it could probably withstand a direct hit by an F-5 Tornado but it costs a premium.

    • @just-dl
      @just-dl Рік тому

      I don't know this guy's numbers, but we might be surprised by how (relatively little) more it costs. for one thing, the extra bracing materials can be re-used, which is a cost savings (either for the owner or if done by a contractor) and the shoring doesn't have to be as finely done, so a slapdash support system can work just fine...which is cheaper and easier. to your point...it will cost more. but, if you're looking for F5 tornado protection...well...solution has been found.... 🙂 I want to do something similar...but, probably not quite so fancy as this project.

      Longevity of your structure would improve by hundreds of years. You could pass this home down how many generations?

    • @michiganengineer8621
      @michiganengineer8621 Місяць тому

      An extremely comfortable storm shelter. It would nearly qualify as a bunker with the addition of metal roller hurricane shutters for the windows and doors. HVAC will be extremely affordable due to the thermal mass of the entire structure being tied together. In fact the largest losses there will be the windows and doors, which is actually normal. An advantage of an all ICF build would be that, unless YOU make a hole in it, it is inherently air/water and bug tight. No need to worry that someone didn't tape a seam or two in your ZIP sheathing properly or seal up a nail head.

  • @dcchong8102

    This would be hurricane proof!

    • @michiganengineer8621
      @michiganengineer8621 Місяць тому

      The weakest points are going to be the doors and windows. Now if you were to use the window and door systems mandated by Miami-Dade, then that house probably would be able to withstand a Cat. 5 direct hit and MAYBE an F5 tornado.

    It looks like no one is answering the questions here, so I welcome any comments others can give me. My question is pouring two sections of the roof and then coming back and pouring the one in the middle. Wouldn't that create a cold joint that could leak? I understand he is putting on a sealant, but it still concerns me.

      the elastomeric paint will bridge a regular sized crack, it will expand when necessary. but there is nothing to rot under the crack anyways so if you dont notice it for a while, it would be fine. just go up and put more paint on

    Seems like a SIP panel with standing seam metal roof would be way more practical.

    • @frotobaggins7169
      @frotobaggins7169 2 роки тому +7

      depends on your goal. It seems that he's living in tornado alley and being strong enough to resist the winds of a tornado seems to be one of his goals. Sips would just be ripped off in a tornado. His 30 foot fee spans are more difficult with sips as well. he also gains sound suppression with concrete as well as fire resistance.

      Cheaper than rebuilding.
      Cheaper in cost cavings of operating that home ( insurance, heating/cooling ).
      Cheaper maintenance.
      Generally you can lower the Square footage about 5-10% and and build a home out of ICF. Dunno how much the roof would add.
