Exactly. I had to take care of myself since about the age of 5 and was thrilled when I reached age 8 and had the ability to walk the mile with money taken out of my opiate addict and alcoholic mentally ill mother to the grocery store and would buy cheap rice, the cheapest meat I could find, etc. and would cook for myself while Mommy lay passed out on the floor. 🙄 It's funny that it was better to get the shit kicked out of me by a sober woman for pouring her booze down the drain than it was to spend whole days by myself while she would only come to long enough to swallow more pills with gin then pass back out. Thank goodness it was acceptable in the 90's for a 10 year old on crutches to ride the bus by herself so I would be able to go to the library and get books so I'd not go completely mad. Horror, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy books were the only thing that kept me going. I'd get money for my birthday from family to go buy clothes at thrift stores I found along the bus routes I took and when she started pulling a gun on me for laughs I found many comfortable places to sleep in the bushes around town. As Decker said, it makes things so much better when people tell you to "Let it go" and stop having panic attacks, nightmares, flashbacks, and bouts of depression where you're not really sure why you continue to try because whenever you reach out for help you're told you're exaggerating, faking, or just looking for attention and an excuse to be lazy. It's even better when I started having orthopedic surgeries at age 10 and need a hip replacement that no one will give me until age 50 so the PTSD combined with the chronic unending pain of sitting, standing, walking, and even laying down makes it that much harder to find joy in any activity. 🙄 Nothing better than having people that didn't help you in the first place tell you to STFU because everyone else has it way worse than you while you try your best to simply go through the bare motions of life and cling to every moment of happiness because you know as soon as you laugh someone will tell you "See, you're not depressed, you just need to think more happy thoughts."

The scene where Bruce’s parents are killed in this movie is rather interesting. In the 1989 Batman film, Bruce’s parents are killed by the joker. Whereas in the comic books and the Dark Knight trilogy, his parents are killed by Joe Chill. However in this movie, the jokers act inspires Joe chill to kill Thomas and Martha Wayne. Thus in a way, the joker killed Bruce’s parents.

@Bro's Reuinted! Respect to you too... I was lucky that I didn't have that myself... But thanks to not facing my own demons and not accepting that I suffered depression and Anxiety - Not an easy thing to admit but, I became abusive! When stress hit I became a right damn dictator and was horrible! A great many things led up to that but I will never see it as an excuse... I was too proud to admit I was struggling mentally and needed help... That blame lies with me - NOT my mental state! Thankfully, I did get help in the end - And now I am in a much better place... But knowing what I became only makes me hurt more for what people such as yourself may have been through at the hands of people far worse and more destructive than I was... :(
I'm so impressed with both of you. How much better would this world be if we were all willing to honestly face our demons and support others as they face theirs. In my own life, I came to see that most people are really just trying to survive the same cruel and difficult world. Truly evil people are actually very rare. I'm not saying it's acceptable for people to mistreat each other. I am saying, though, that most people deserve so much more mercy and compassion than they receive. Thanks for your comments guys; I respect you both a lot
@@adamgray1753 In other words, it's relatable, and therefore marketable. So yeah, makes sense why a movie studio would take advantage of that. Hey, part of the appeal of the Joker is that he doesn't have a clear backstory, and he says that the only thing separating him from everyone else is one bad day. So in other words, all it takes is one bad day for someone to become the joker. So why not?
Sounds like a great idea for the next Joker movie, @@scottbruckner4653. The Joker finds out his beloved Harley Quinn is stuck between the horrid worlds of Feminism and death. The Joker has to figure out how to take her away from the truly horrifying monsters known as Feminists without resorting to their tactics.
Whoa. A less than stellar review of “Joker” that doesn’t make insulting implications about its fans, acknowledges the good elements, and doesn’t turn it into a platform for virtue signaling? That’s a pleasant surprise. Not unheard of, but pleasant all the same.
Was Suicidally depressed as a young adult due to the extreme bulling I got from my schoolmates. For me watching this film was less about the "plot" or delving into the specifics of mental illness and more a character study about the emotions and isolation one goes through when in that kind of place. The bathroom dance, as its referred to, was so moving I wept in silence in the theater. The emotions on display and the music took me back to some dark times I had been through and some really dark feelings that now in my healthier state of being I haven't looked back on in sometime. For me sometimes a movie is more about the emotions it makes you feel than the logic of its story or world. So Joker gets a full house 5/5 all around.
Not Frozen 2, that movie just happened to be screening around the same time in the Multiplex. It was gang related violence brought on by the screening of Blue Story, which caused more than 25 significant incidents in 16 separate cinemas in the first 24 hours of screening.
I saw this movie 3 times in theatres. Each and every time I watched it, I brought another one of my friends. Their reactions to certain scenes, especially the Murray murder, was the same as mine: this movie blew us away. Although it crams a lot in its runtime and some aspects of the illness are kind of superficial, I still truely believe that this move really tried hard to justify each and every action Arthur/ Happy takes. The focus on 1 character and the tragedies of his life, was a wonderfull take on the phenomenon that is 'the Joker'. I'll probably watch it a lot again. I have been loving your reviews for years now. Keep on doing what you're doing, Decker!
Copyright and censorship is what's killing today's creativity. You can't work on one thing because somebody will sue you for it. And you can't work on another thing because you will offend somebody with power.
Joseph Calabrese yep. Totally the opposite of what the original limited intent of copyright was and the value of public domain. It's been pushed beyond the maximum of all that and now it's just another draconian measure that limits liberty and creativity and rarely serves the actual creators of work. It's a damn shame.
@@RabbiSteve Some would say that by the end of the 2020's Micky Mouse will fall into Public Domain. But we all know that the Walt Disney Company will find some way to keep the mouse forever out of public domain. You just wait for it.
Joseph Calabrese Right. Since it was Disney that started this whole mess with the so-called "Mickey Mouse Copyright Law" back in the early 20th century, they have controlled the issue and made it the monster that it is. So, yeah, I wouldn't bet on anything from Disney *ever* being allowed to fall into the public domain.
Another good take on a Joker origin story (albeit in an Alternate Universe in which the Wayne parents were in league with organized crime) is the Telltale Games series, which has you encounter him as "John Doe" in Arkham itself during the first game, and then throughout the second game where your decisions shape whether he becomes the Clown Prince of Crime or whether he becomes The Joker, crime-fighting crusader! Although that's *his* version of a crime-fighting crusader, so... "The bodycount begins to rise." Seriously, it is *astounding* just how good a job they did with that premise.
I have a feeling at some point at least one of the child actors in the scene where they beat up Arthur in an alley said “I’m Batman”, because you don’t act in a movie where you beat up The Joker and don’t at some point say “I’m Batman”
I know you said not to comment on the pain you went through, much of it raised in a subtle way, but it was both heartfelt and I’m sure touched many who think you are simply amazing in your ability to analyze movies. I really liked it, it was an interesting take on the character, shot in an visually interesting artistic style, probably the most realistic acting I've seen in a while, really gets into the grim and gritty of living in Gotham, seen from a different perspective than usual. (Yes, I know not the most detailed description of the film, but it's what popped into my head when I saw the notification,) showing that the classic Killing Joke based philosophy of the Joker that it takes just one bad day for a good man to become like himself, really isn't that hard to believe, with the reveal partway through the movie that not all we see is really happening in universe, like his relationship with the neighbour lady not being real.
@DillyDyson007 I took this more as a Schizoaffective/Scizophrenic off his meds and living in his delusions instead of multiple personalities. I caught that the relationship wasn't real, just the vibes and his way of doing things. Maybe that's because my boyfriend is schizoaffective and I have witnessed more than once he's decent into his delusional world. Thankfully I know all his tells now so I always try to get him in to get his meds checked, but it can be so hard when the social worker talks to him for 5 mins and sends him to a freaking rehab instead of calling me or the police to talk about our mental health petition......still pissed about that.
We live in a modern society that very seriously frowns upon self protection, @DillyDyson007, yet the same modern society actively promotes the unceasing cruel acts upon anyone they so please online and in real life. It is no wonder why there are so many mentally and emotionally devastated people out there in the world.
@@ripleyjlawman.3162 Feel like I should point out that Joker (character) did not care about politics and it clearly had everyone else looking too deep into it in-universe. Personally, I would say the crowd projecting onto him was part of the "society is messed" theme.
The fact that Arthur's relationship with his neighbor was all in his head was pretty cleverly foreshadowed. Reality is awash in blues, while his fantasies are all bright and yellow orange-ish.
If there's one thing that'll always get me and makes me admire Decker are the small bits we learn of his personal childhood and yet...he's still a fun and seemingly awsome person. I admire that in people
Maybe 'cause The Joker is an untrustworthy narrator, they've revealed how Arthur suffers from delusions, and it's left to us to figure out what's the truth and what's not, each of those days could've been the *one bad day* in his story.

I find this movie to be above average. It's competently made and Joaquin Phoenix is amazing as usual, but outside of his performance, the movie isn't all that remarkable. For a movie that's made out to be dark and disturbing, I found it to be pretty tame. The story also struck me as a bit shallow and surface level with the presentation of its themes and characters. It feels very edgelord like with its writing. Lastly, I think the movie undermines its efforts to be seen as a serious standalone movie with its connections to the Batman mythos. Like, you could remove the Waynes from the movie altogether and actually improve the film. I'd give it a 3.5/5.

The point where they reveal that the lady was never really his girlfriend probably would have hit harder if it wasn't already established early on in the movie that he had vivid delusions. Also, if they didn't write their interactions as her also being completely psycho, for instance acting like "Fuck yeah, there are killer clowns in the city now, they're heroes and totally don't make me feel scared as a single woman riding the subway with my child."

One thing I personal relate to in the story is the trauma response of laughing under stress, so much so that I actually began to worry as I watched through the film. It was a dark time in my life, and my particular diagnosis had me emotionally at max settings, and when it became too much, all I could do was laugh hysterically, despite feeling absolutely destroyed. The statements were, as you said, childish, but the emotions conveyed felt very very real.
I think the finest detail in this movie was something Decker missed in the very beginning. He has the same social worker in Arkham as he had before embracing his Joker identity. They both looks much older, Joaquin has some grey on his hair and in his beard, forwarding the thought that time has passed since the last shot where the mob idolized him. I took this as a future vision by the point where Bruce has already become Bats and has got Joker into Arkham where he resides just like in the comics, before becoming a nuisance again.
I found it interesting that his laugh was (heavily implied) to be caused by brain injury, since many people suffer similar conditions. This and PTSD can have varying effects on people throughout their lives. And while I see where you're coming from on the story beats seeming shallow, I didn't mind so much as I liked that it wasn't over-explained. Plus there were plenty aspects I could relate to, although whether that is a good thing or not is debatable.
When Gary asked Arthur to open the dor for him I was laughing my ass of the, weird part was that the entire theater was silent and then the guy infront of me turned to look at me as if I was the weird one
That's the one thing that felt like the Joker to me. At his best in terms of quality, he's an unpredictable guy who's just as likely to kill you as hitting you in the face with a cream pie. That is an encapsulation of the Joker right there.
As someone with a learning disability I wished that Society would improve after seeing how people loved the Joke to fail is human is all that was learned or improved.
1:47 they do show alot of garbage bags in the streets throughout the movie after this is explained, so they do show it. There's even a scene where Author is kicking a trash bag (in an alley completely filled with them) in anger before collapsing onto a pile of them. Are you saying they should have shown the trash everywhere before giving this exposition, or should they just have shown and not told.
Honestly, I really loved this movie, but it was also quite difficult for me to watch at times. As someone with family that suffers from mental illness, it just felt too real at times I guess. Like, it would genuinely make me feel incredibly uneasy at parts, which is definitely the point, but still, was a bit of a difficult watch.
I love this movie! Joaquin Phoenix's Joker is the only Joker in Joker history who's been able to pull at my heartstrings. His Oscar was well deserved. Oh, and Todd Phillips has said he did not kill Sophie.
Take that back, the dark Knight is the greatest dc movie ever. This movie was mental illness being surrounded by assholes the movie. Heath muthafuckin Ledger is the greatest joker.
not so good since it's clear that it's not his type of movie at all and his subjective take lessens his grade of the movie, trying desperately to portray it as shallow, lmao.
@@dimas3829 I liked that he explained the points he disliked clearly, but to me someone's reaction towards this movie tells a lot about that one person's past. I didn't have an abusive household growing, but I got picked on from age 5 to 15 for being the weird ugly lonely kid. I hated life, I hated how people liked being mean to hurt others. I know that if I lost my parents during those times, I could've gone down a road of pain and violence. Thanks for such a thorough review. I spent my teenage years in NYC, believe me, there were TONS of stores that were going "out of business", every day, for 365 days a year, for years and years. They had to pass a law banning fake going out of business sales like that. The only exception to the standard practice was Crazy Eddies which actually did go out of business.
@The Rue Morgue And your point is? Plenty of movies are controversial when they come out. This is no exception. People have always been reactionary when it comes to this kind of stuff.
@@justinriley That's just it, this film was not controversial. The media made it clear they hate (straight) White men. That's why they zealously attacked this movie.
I still think the joke is that the story is all in Arthur’s mind. I think none of it happened. And when he tells the therapist you wouldn’t get It. He means that exactly. He created a world where he is admired because his pain growing up was so great he couldn’t fathom none loving him enough to rescue him. He read some bat man comics and created a fantasy world for himself. Love your reviews Always entertaining.
Are you having any negative thoughts? 11:10 the fast paced is scary! Decker the movie is all in the joker’s head and a possibility of what he’s origin is, but it’s not known if it’s true or not. The joker has no origin and he could care less about it. It’s multiple choice.

Honestly my problem with this movie is the Batman connection. I think I would have liked it more had they left out any DC connections entirely. Say it's Chicago or New York, not Gotham. I mean, it literally had Batman's origin in it! I feel like they should have let it be it's own story. It would have been just fine with out the comic connection. Now, if The Batman movie comes out and they use the exact scene from this as his origin flashback, and somehow incorporate the events of this movie into the mythos, then I may be happier with it. Other than that, as Decker said, it was beautifully shot and acted. I was just left feeling somewhat meh by it.

Nothing better than having people that didn't help you in the first place tell you to STFU because everyone else has it way worse than you while you try your best to simply go through the bare motions of life and cling to every moment of happiness because you know as soon as you laugh someone will tell you "See, you're not depressed, you just need to think more happy thoughts."

We don't need vats of acid or science gone wrong to make super villains, just society.
That literally could be anyone on the Internet these days, @TheFandrian. Especially anyone in any UA-cam comment section.
So why not?
The best supervillains only need their loved one to be in a state of limbo between life and death.
Sounds like a great idea for the next Joker movie, @@scottbruckner4653. The Joker finds out his beloved Harley Quinn is stuck between the horrid worlds of Feminism and death. Decker is a cool guy

I remember at the same time of “news” articles saying this movie would cause psychotic murders, there was a machete fight at a screening for Frozen 2.
Its Ur Boi I remember that 😂😂😂😂😂
I can you only enjoy Frozen 2 if there's a machete fight.
Not Frozen 2, that movie just happened to be screening around the same time in the Multiplex.
It was gang related violence brought on by the screening of Blue Story, which caused more than 25 significant incidents in 16 separate cinemas in the first 24 hours of screening.
The worst that happened during a Joker screening was a loud drunk being ejected from the theater... and they even tried exploiting that.
That's Birmingham for you
I saw this movie 3 times in theatres.
These copyright claims are saying a lot about our *society* aren't they Decker?
Indeed.
"The bodycount begins to rise."
Seriously, it is *astounding* just how good a job they did with that premise.
I have a feeling at some point at least one of the child actors in the scene where they beat up Arthur in an alley said “I’m Batman”, because you don’t act in a movie where you beat up The Joker and don’t at some point say “I’m Batman”
"I'm Batman" is something every boy has said at least once.
I know you said not to comment on the pain you went through, much of it raised in a subtle way, but it was both heartfelt and I’m sure touched many who think you are simply amazing in your ability to analyze movies.
I think this gives you a certain edge in looking beyond the surface sorry of films to penetrate their inner workings.

I wouldn't call it deep, it's thought provoking at best, and man is it depressing seeing Arthur slip further and further into becoming the Joker.

Feel like I should point out that Joker (character) did not care about politics and it clearly had everyone else looking too deep into it in-universe. Personally, I would say the crowd projecting onto him was part of the "society is messed" theme.
The fact that Arthur's relationship with his neighbor was all in his head was pretty cleverly foreshadowed. Reality is awash in blues, while his fantasies are all bright and yellow orange-ish.

What if a Nun had breakdown and started a social movement? The people would dress as Nuns and might turn violent. Like in 'Nuns on the Run' (1990) starring the late Robbie Coltrane. He didnt turn violent though.
Ok
I'll like to add that personally for me, the music is really well done. It aids in a nice layer of intense building.

It was as shocking as the fight club reveal

This movie blew me away it’s Joaquin Phoenix masterpiece.
The statements were, as you said, childish, but the emotions conveyed felt very very real.
this is the most accurate review ive seen of this movie. 3/5 story, 5/5 presentation.
Nah the story is 5/5
I think the finest detail in this movie was something Decker missed in the very beginning.
Wow, somehow I never expected joker to be in March of the clowns, but im really glad it is, it was a great movie
When Gary asked Arthur to open the dor for him I was laughing my ass of the, weird part was that the entire theater was silent and then the guy infront of me turned to look at me as if I was the weird one

@@dayaninikhaton yes I want chibithulu to talk about the fact that he's in the movie
Hey decker, hopr you're staying safe and sane during this crazy af year. Thank you for all the awesome content
Are you having any negative thoughts?
11:10 the fast paced is scary!
Decker the movie is all in the joker’s head and a possibility of what he’s origin is, but it’s not known if it’s true or not.
The joker has no origin and he could care less about it. It’s multiple choice.
All i have is negative thoughts.
Yep. It's pretty much in character for the Joker.
Maybe Arthur is the one that inspires the real joker.
@@saisameer8771 Anything is possible my friend.
Just wanna point out I worked at a movie theater when Joker came out and damn we had an assload of cops at our theater the opening weekend and on average had 2-4 cops per theater (12 in total) the entire weekend . They got free tickets but it was just in case some psycho did something . It was kinda weird and a bit unnerving with how freaked the cops were
I don't get it as just a movie
20:05 something on your mind champ?
That's heartbreaking hey.
(Applause) Decker, this one was priceless. Was anxiously looking forward to a formal review of this one. This one truly kills like a joke..
Hope you and yours are well. Many tanks and thanks to you sir.

The moment the neighbours were "Oh he's at it again".
are you gonna review Godzilla king of the monsters 2019
that movie was awful and i'd like to hear him rip that movie apart.
@@unknownflickz1289 ...are you saying that as a Godzilla fan or someone who just does not like giant monster movies
@@nathanieltose7653 just as a person who respects art, i like monster movies if they have good themes, characters, plot, cinematography ect. I don't give any of it a pass.
@@unknownflickz1289 I have to agree the humans in the movie sucked. But that has always been a problem with Godzilla movies. But respect it for what it is and you see it's a good movie the action is pretty good, and the cgi is really good
@@Warriortime1 the action sucked, it was dull because it was weightless and no tension. and I dont really respect this film since it tarnishes the og godzillas point and is just a bunch of references.
Oh your still alive. Thought you left UA-cam. Nice to see you again
20:34 No, no I didn't. But I do now.
They could've kept the Waynes but make the alleyway scene much less obvious, like an easter egg
Oh lordy, y'all finna do Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie next. 😏
It was a Good Movie about the Need for better Mental Healthcare. As for a DC Comics "Joker" Origin Story.... It Sucked Balls and has No Reason t be a Joker Origin Story. Jared Leto's Joker Made more sense than this piece of Garbage. Great Video Decker as Always!
Honestly Decker's laugh I'd perfectly welcome in the role of Joker. Anyone else think he could ace that one?
Love your ending message. Its wasn't until I was 17 I stopped blaming my present for my past. After that I was able to make big changes.
