2022 Acura MDX Problems - Watch Before You Buy!!

  • Update 28 Nov 2022: Now that it's getting cold again, I am starting to get a lot of comments and messages from people having the same or similar problems with their 2022 and 2023 MDXs, mainly with their infotainment system. Will be interesting to see how many people have problems through the winter. I'm guessing that some poor schmo was likely re-sold our lemon MDX here in Ottawa, Canada. It only had 300 km on it because it wouldn't stay running long enough to put any miles on it. The bummer is that someone probably bought it when the weather was warming up and won't have the infotainment/battery problem until this Dec/Jan, so they'll be stuck with it.
Update 8 March 2022. PSA: Based on my experience with our 2022 Acura MDX, my advice to anyone looking to buy a new or used Honda or Acura product newer than a 2006 is to do significant, extensive research, particularly on their Bluetooth, Infotainment and battery drain problems - and make sure the risk of problems is acceptable to you. Also, look at how Honda/Acura has treated its customers with these problems,. and make sure the risk of Honda/Acura not fixing the problems is acceptable to you. There is a significant amount of customers with critical infotainment and battery drain problems, where Honda/Acura has just said "we don't have a fix". Many customers have been left with a broken vehicle that Honda/Acura is not fixing under warranty.
With respect to the 2022 MDX, its infotainment issues are linked to the 2019+ RDX issues, it's the same system. Honda/Acura just settled a class action lawsuit for these issues in the 2019-2020 RDX in January 2022, and I believe there will be another class action lawsuit coming for the 2021+ RDX and 2022+ MDX. Honda/Acura is ignoring these issues because they still have not developed a fix for them, which is why they settled the 2019-2020 RDX class action.
Honda/Acura had agreed to help us return our 2022 MDX to the dealer for a refund, and to top up a small dollar value of our refund that the dealer refused to pay. To do this, Honda/Acura asked us to sign a release agreement and remove my social media posts, which we agreed to. Based on their agreement, we took our partial refund from the dealer. After that, Honda/Acura sent us the release agreement, but frankly, it contained false statements, would be illegal and would give us unlimited liability to Honda/Acura should I miss deleting a social media post. We made some edits to correct these issues, and Honda/Acura refused to edit it. We asked to speak to their legal team, and they said that "their legal team does not speak to the public." My wife and I both work in contracting and know what we're signing, and would not advise anyone to sign what they call their 'standard' release form. So we walked away.
We told Honda/Acura that we were going to continue to tell our story to the media, and they said "that is your right". They simply don't care that they sold us a faulty vehicle that financially injured us. They don't care that they couldn't fix it after 3 attempts. And surprisingly they don't care that my UA-cam video now has over 43,000 views.
Purchased MDX on 30 Dec 2021 and it broke down the same day, no infotainment and dead battery. Towed to dealer, was there three days, and it broke down the same day we took it back. Towed again, was there a week, and the infotainment broke the next morning after taking it back a third time. Still was able to drive it for a week with no infotainment, and then it died a third time on 20 Jan 2022. It was towed a 3rd time and we started the process of returning it for a refund... which took over a month and did not go well.

All 2023 have a high pitch tone that Acura says is normal. This is what the dealer said when I took it in. Beware my loaner another 2023 with more mileage had the high pitch tone louder than mine. Opened a case with Acura. No one knows what causes the annoying high tone pitch sound. Sounds like a bearing or something too tight. Buyers beware !! Poor dealership service and responses.

I've taken each one to 150k and have truly had zero issues whatsoever! Just regular consistent maintenance. They are bulletproof and have never ever let me down or left me stranded. Thank you for posting this video. I wish I had seen this earlier. I had a lot of problems with my 2019 RDX advance, with the infotainment system, constantly going black and glitching and disconnecting CarPlay etc. etc. Acura basically took the car back from me and put me into a 22 MDX advance instead back in September of last year. I have had nothing but problems with the new MDX. My infotainment screen has gone black five times, I’m waiting for the dealer to give me an appointment to get another loaner. I can’t use the charging pad with my iPhone, they say it’s a known issue with the magnet in the new iPhones but they have no fix. My brakes are squeaking all over all day and they are also aware of this issue with the new MDX and they have no fix. They are constantly telling me that the tech issues are related to me or my iphone, that the problems I have with the car are my own doing, it’s just ridiculous. I bought a $62,000 vehicle and it’s had nothing but problems and it’s constantly in the shop. I’m currently speaking with some lemon law attorneys. I’ve had enough with Acura and I will never ever ever ever ever buy a car from this brand ever again!

To cap it off, we returned it for a $1,200 loss from our trade in tax savings, which the dealer refused to reimburse.
While negotiating with Acura, they agreed to pay the $1,200, in exchange for me taking this video down. Then, they sent us a ridiculously illegal non-disclosure agreement that make us infinitely liable to Acura for damages. They refused to edit it to make it legal, so we refused to sign it, and they didn't give us our $1,200 as promised.
I'll never buy another Honda/Acura product as long as I live.
Best of luck with your decision! Despite the market being flooded with CUVs/SUVs, there really aren't a lot of good options at this size and price point.

All too familiar with this and as a Technician for Acura.. I share your frustration. ACURA and Honda introduced a new CAN protocol for their vehicles starting in about 2019. The new MOST system is faster and more powerful… when it works. The 2019 RDX was the first ACURA vehicle to use this system and let’s just say there were many complaints of glitchy infotainment systems along with other communication problems shortly after it was released. I have replaced dash harnesses, body harnesses, infotainment control units, tuner units, amplifiers, FAKRA connectors and they just cannot seem to perfect the system to just… work. The new TLX and MDX is proof of that, as they share the same MOST system and we have already begun to fix those problems as well.
They’re introducing too much new tech at one time while trying to integrate them with existing technology while also changing communication systems that have worked flawlessly for decades.
    QC is also not there.

Thanks for your comment; yup this is 100% exactly what I have learned about these since we had the problem with ours. Definitely bought one primarily based on Honda/Acura's false reputation for quality.
I consulted with some engineers on the problem - and their consensus was that Acura just outright lacks the software engineering capability to implement these systems in their vehicles, and it also explains why they can't fix them when they break.

After a day or 2, the car battery would die. I would jump it and would be fine again. I never had any of my lights on but now it makes sense, its that pesky infotainment system. Can't thank you enough for this video.

I feel sorry for your experience. I hope everything will work out fine and you will be satisfy of the end result.
And I just got a '22 MDX Advance 3 weeks ago and I traded in my '16 MDX Tech/Ent/Acurawatch. So far the problems I encountered is the buggy wireless Apple CarPlay which sometimes I ended up using the cable and go wired instead of wireless. One time while driving back to NY from PA, the Apple Car Play restarted (and I was using Waze as Nav). I didn't like the glossy finish (dashboard, console) and it attracts or made the dusts more visible. But then again, it can serve another purpose as "time to clean your car now" indicator.
I find the OEM Bridgestone Alenza tires a bit noisy compared to previous Michelin tires. I also find the car a bit slower (bec. it is heavier) but this transmission is more smoother. My new concern now is I feel a slight vibration on the steering wheel when cruising above 50mph. And one time I felt a grinding thru steering wheel when I was doing a tight U-turn. I really hope that there is nothing wrong with the bearings. Another disappointment is the suspension thinking it will be at par with GLE or Q7 but not.
Other than the stuffs I mentioned above, I and my family love it. As compared to previous MDX, it feels more luxurious, spacious, loved the panoramic sunroof, the kids love the interior accent lights at night, and many more. My previous MDX has the entertainment and I wish there's an option accessories to install headrest version in blu-ray and/or streaming (wifi/bluetooth). The true touch pad has a learning curve, annoying at first and got used to it finally. Next project is to have a tow hitch installed by the dealership.
Thank you for sharing this video. I hope Honda/Acura of USA will take note and/or pay close attention to their customers and try not trick them. Honda of Japan should always closely monitor.

@@stonecoldcustoms that’s one heck of a story. SMH. What an insulting and disrespectful offer to reconcile this problem. They could have bought the car back in-full, offered a sincere apology and this would have all went away- and, I imagine without any “hard feelings” about the car failure, and maybe just disappointment on your end instead.
Now, this has scared away many potential buyers costing them a lot more than if they just took responsibility. Not to diminish your story, but this kind of nonsense is happening a lot these days with so many manufacturers. I have a feeling the dispassionate arrogance has something to do with the still “sellers market” raging right now. They just don’t feel like they need to do anything. @@cpg8000 Exactly the whole thing has been very surprising to me from a business perspective. I'd say it's a clear case of being too large of a company and not having good people making good decisions in their customer relations department. Bottom line is that Honda/Acura's support was WAY, WAY below the standard that I've received from other manufacturers - which was shocking since Acura is supposed to be a 'luxury' brand where they do better than that. And a huge part of their marketing is based on the perception of "Honda quality". That may have been true 20 years ago but it's a joke now.
One of the lines in the NDA actually said that if Honda/Acura did anything illegal in our dealings, that the NDA would remain legal - LMAO - "legality" is one of the key requirements of a contract to remain valid and they were trying to get me to waive "legality".. Unbelievable.

What happenend to the engineering team at Acura? 2023 MDX, unless is a TYPE-S the most HP you can get is 355? the SUV is close to 4,700LBS or a bit more so even with 355HP, it is not a performance SUV. I’ve had two mdx leases. The first one no problem. The second 2018 multiple issues. All the sensor lights came one while driving, I had to drive home at like 10 mph bc it would only go slow. Then when I got home it died. Another time it just didn’t start. Multiple little things. All in the first year. I loved it, but would never buy an mdx. Lease maybe but I lost confidence.

No they said there was no fix. We returned the car for a financial loss and fought with Acura for 2 months. They couldn't have cared less about the situation they put us in.

@@cachegrk I agree 100% with your asssessment. I've hated on VWs for decades for their reliability problems.
In the Atlas' case, I was ok with it because it's been out for 6 years, and figured they've worked the bugs out of it by now. (Believe they have, you don't hear to too many issues with the new models, unlike the 2016-2018 models.)
Plus we're only planning to keep it for 3-5 years, under warranty, and were ok to have problems as long as VW fixed them, unlike Acura/Honda. We've had no problems with our 2022 Atlas and have 25,000 miles on it already. Just one minor recall to reflash a control module so far.

I feel your pain, my wife bought a 21 Sorrento and it randomly bricks and lights up like a Christmas 🎄. Dealership can't recreate even though I brought it in lit up, it's been there a month. KIA told us to pound sand, I was contemplating getting an MDX.... Thank you for the heads up.
At least they said they will take it back, I'm stuck with a car that randomly 💩's itself. I've talked to lawyers and it's a bad situation all around. Hopefully yours was resolved.

That's brutal. I can empathize with how frustrating that is.
Acura couldn't fix ours so we returned it. They tried offering a replacement but didn't really have one and we didn't want one anyway after our experience. (And ended up fighting with Acura unsuccessfully for 2 months but that's another story.)
We ended up buying a VW Atlas. It has 100% exceeded our expectations in every area. It's been out for 5 years so feel that any reliability issues have been sorted by now.
I realize that any car can break. It happens. But the reason I would never buy another Acura is because of our horrible experience dealing with them when ours broke, and when we decided to return it. They couldn't have shown that they cared less, at every interaction with them.

All messages are about brake system, parking brake, cruise control and other safety systems. Sometimes I can not release the parking brake unless turn off and on the engine several times. Three weeks ago, we just purchased a 2023 MDX Advance to replace my wife’s Lexus RX330 that my son totaled. So far everything works but now doubting the quality of materials used and future reliability. The windshield developed a 4” crack on the inside glass (no damage on the outside) right above the infotainment screen on the 3rd week of ownership. This is our first Acura and now not that thrilled after watching your video. Never experienced this in the 18 years that we had the Lexus. I hope the issue has been resolved. So far everything works as it should but might be too early to tell. Thanks for posting.

Best of luck with it; I've definitely heard from lots of happy owners through this, so I do believe the lemons are a small percentage. But also would put Lexus way above Acura in terms of quality. it's too bad Lexus doesn't make a more modern, slightly larger midsize SUV. My wife tried the new RX350 but didn't like it. This might’ve been an issue with Acura from as far back as the 90s. I had a 1997 RL that used to just cut off while driving. It even happened on the highway. Luckily I felt it in time to move over on the shoulder. No mechanic could figure it out. I eventually sold it. Sold it for way less than I bought it for, I wanted to get rid of it.

That's an awful experience. We have a 22 MDX Tech SH-AWD, acquired nearly a year ago having taken advantage of this crazy used car market and trading in our recently leased 20 MDX Tech SH-AWD. While this is a far nicer MDX than the previous ones we've had (09 base, 12 Tech, 15 Tech SH-AWD, 17 Tech SH-AWD and the forementioned 20 Tech SH-AWD), we've defnitely experienced more 'quirks' with this one than all the others. Specifically, I've had to add coolant twice in the past

    • @mkm692
      @mkm692 2 роки тому +1

I was reading your response here and I noticed you said you’ve had to add coolant twice in the past year, this is a closed system so either one of two things are going on either you’ve got a leak somewhere or you could have a slow head gasket leak, which is serious because it’s only gonna get worse and you don’t want to find out after the car is out of warranty .There’s a guy on UA-cam his channel is called The Car Care Nut, he has a video called how to check for a bad head gasket on Toyota or Lexus engines but this would apply for any engine because it checks for combustion gases in the radiator fluid. Here’s a link to the video it starts at 3:30 sec into video ua-cam.com/video/j9_LKFUDyig/v-deo.html any good mechanic should be able to do this test it takes about two minutes. In this guy’s vehicle he had a small leak where the antifreeze was leaking past the head gasket, but this Toyota had 291,000 miles on it, so he advised the owner that it’s not worth the money to put into the vehicle.

Whoa..that is crazy. Wait so they KNOW that there is a known issue and yet they won't fix it??? Hell no.
About 8-9 years ago I started having issues with my 2001 Acura CL type S (yes she is and oldie) and I started having issues with my car, it would stutter and act like it wouldn't go. So the dealer told me it was my transmission (at the time only had about 65K miles on the car) and when I researched to see if there were known tranny issues there were...my model along with a handful of others had a transmission recall...my transmission wasn't replaced and when I told the dealer they were trying to give me the run around and told me it would cost $8K to replace it...
I ended up finding the telephone number to Acura Corporate U.S and within 2-3 days the dealer called me and told me I had to only owed $250 for labor and my car was then fixed.
I'm not sure if Canada has Acura Corporate, but I would HIGHLY recommend speaking with someone higher up than at the dealership.

Honda (Acura) issues 10-20 “Tech Bulletins” monthly that are not released to the public. These are issued to mechanics so they know what to look for if the public are complaining about something - or if it’s made up… by time a vehicle reaches EOL there may be 10,000 TB’s issued. Dealers also don’t have to honors them unless under warranty
