In the gnolls fight, I believe there is another Easter egg. If you play as Bard and approach the gnoll leader from their back, you get to talk to it. One of the options is to tell the gnolls a joke so good that they all get stunned for 2 rounds laughing, time you can use to kill them one by one without worries of being damaged. That is a reference to a popular Monty Python sketch, "The Funniest Joke in the World". The killer joke.

When first meeting Astarion, he says 'I was ready to decorate the ground with your innards' , in BG2 both Korgan and Renal Bloodscalp[ Or Mae'Var, one of the two] say something about decorating with innards.
Elminster, when you meet him, says the *exact* same thing as when you meet him for the first time in BG1
Balduran's butter knife is missing. You can find it on the Werewolf Island in BG1 [TotSC]
One of Minsc's Battlecries is 'Can we fight now? Boo is not used to this taking-of-turns', referring to the fact that the originals were real-time-with-pause.
Gale refers to Vlaakith as an omnipresent authority figure, a famous line from the Jaheira in the originals
Volo reveals that he was present when the Children of Bhaal were going at it - which is actually true. You find him in besieged Saradush in ToB. Moreover, with the original six-cd-set in the 90's, the manual that came along with it was 'written by Volo'. Which, is fun, because he says this as he hands you a 'manual' to defeating the Slayer. Which, of course, covers the villain from BG2.
Minthara has a *lot* of Viconia lines and references.
The shadow druids are from the Cloakwood sect you can meet in Bg1, with Faldorn mentioned as its founder. Faldorn was a recruitable companion in BG1 [who was incidentally, voiced by the same actress that did Jaheira]
You can visit the Jannath Estate, Liia Jannath being one of the Grand Dukes in BG1.
Edit: Oh, and all the spellcasting is done in Latin, just like in the originals.

One more Easter Egg: The main Character in BG3 says sometimes: "I shouldn´t have wished to live in more interesting times". It is a reference to Terry Pratchett and his famous Discworld Novels. There are lines from classic movies that would have been popular when the writers were kids sprinkled throughout the script. For example, the Githyanki creche is referred to as "that wretched little hive" (Star Wars), and Astarion has a line where he talks about him and Tav being lovers forever "until the world falls down" (Labyrinth)

Nine-Fingers Keene seems to me like a reference to Logen Ninefingers, one of the protagonists of Joe Abercrombie’s “First Law” trilogy. What takes it from coincidence to reference for me is the absurd amount of knives you can find on her corpse, as one of Logen’s sayings is “you can never have too many knives”

  • @IsilionNELE
    @IsilionNELE 9 місяців тому +22

Not sure if you count them but BG3 has references to Faldorn and Branwen
Faldorn is a shadow druid companion in BG1 and the leader of the shadow druids who have taken over the druid grove in BG2 (where you kill her), in BG3 the shadow druids' letter to Kagha ends with "In Faldorn's memory"
Branwen is a human cleric who worships Tempus, in BG1 you can find her petrified and when you cure her she can join your party, in BG2 she's part of the characters who teach how to play in the tutorial, in BG3 you can find her grave in the graveyard in the city of Baldur's Gate

Another DOS:2 Easter egg is in the House of Grief reception area. If you read the recent visitor log, you will see mention of a man using a "false name". If you played DOS:2 to its epilogue and Tarquin was still alive, he will talk about going to "other worlds" or planes of existence. The description in the Visitor log is too close to Tarquin (it is suggested that he is not from Faerun, and paid with unfamiliar gold coins). Wish I had the exact quotes from the logs, but unfortunately I don't.
    Happy Easter Egg hunting! :D

About the Necromancy and the Evil Dead reference: Both are actually a reference to H.P. Lovecrafts Necronomicon from the Cthulhu mythos. Given how most of act 2 plays out, I would say at least one person at Larians loves both Poe and Lovecraft plus a good dash of body horror. But especially that abaondoned village with the House of Healing and the other changed citizens, is very lovecraftian. The Necromancy has similar effects as the Necronomicon: you can get powerful knowledge out of it, but the more common outcome will be, that you are not strong enough and will suffer from reading it. If you give Astarion the Necromancy, he starts mumbling about how he hears voices and they are suggesting unhealthy stuff to him. At one point, when he reads it, there are literally shadow tentacles coming out of the book.
In EA there was another old companion referenced: Faldorn - in teh book about shadow druids, you can find in Kaghas stuff. Sadly, they took it out.

Great catches, but a few things worth pointing out:
Killing rats in the cellar in the Elfsong Tavern is more than just a reference to the quests in the original Baldur's Gate and Dark Alliance - that also happens to be a common trope in (High Fantasy) CRPGs in general. It's usually one of the first quests you do in your avatar's starting town in many similar RPGs.
In addition to Noober in BG1, there was also his relatives, Nuber in Siege of Dragonspear and Neeber in Baldur's Gate II, so Larian deserves props for continuing a running gag throughout the BG series!
Also, Aerie's race is called an Avariel, which is a sub-race of Elves distinguished by their wings.
Great video, though! Both the classic BG titles, especially BG1 from what I've found, and the Divinity series alike have had neat little easter eggs and pop culture references, too!

In Act 2, there is a Harper named Arthus who checks the prisoners you rescue for infection after you return to the Last Light Inn. Poutine can also be found in Act 3, inside the smuggler's cave. As a French Canadian, was pretty surprised to find that (before I learned Larian had a team in Quebec City).
    - During my 2nd playthrough, Shadowheart said at one point "you catch more flies with a spoon of honey than a barrel of vinegar" (or something to that effect). Although it's a popular saying, it's also a quote found in one of St. Francis of Sales's books, a late 16th century "cleric", who might have been among the first, if not the first, to say it.
    - Also love how the magical/Infernal speech is often Latin.

Personally, I think it´s more a Pratchett reference, who in turn was referencing Poe, because Quoth in Discworld was also a familiar.
I also vaguely recall reading about other Pratchett references in book titles. IIRC there is a book somewhere about a staff or cane having a knob on the end. A reference to the famous (to Pratchett fans at least) song, "A Wizard´s staff has a knob at the end."

10:09 - they did my boi Ifan dirty with the deluxe items :( we got Beast's hat, Princey's cape, Sebille's dagger, Lohse's lute, and Fane's mask of the shapeshifter, but Ifan doesn't even get a crossbow or hood or something. Not even a wolf in the game references Ifan as far as I've found

Yeah, Beast is less popular than Ifan but we got his hat.... Instead of Ifan Crossbow?! Or white Wolf toy would be good.

There is a NADDPOD reference. Karlach says “watch this” when ever she attacks. This is Hardwon Surefoot's catch phrase throughout the campaign.

I wouldn't call it an easter egg but a pretty cool detail I stumbled across while exploring the camp at the beginning of the game. If you jump/climb up the rock behind Astarion's tent in the first wilderness camp, I Want to Live with lyrics starts playing. This game has such attention to detail, it's impressive!

I don't remember who says it but there is a line of dialogue from the Macbeth that gets quoted. The line that gets quoted is "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow" that starts off this famous soliquey ending with "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
Sorry I haven't played the game and have just been watching walk throughs so I missed who the character was.

At the beginning when you meet Gale he says: "You don't happen to be a cleric, by any chance, do you? A doctor? Surgeon? Uncannily adroit with a knitting needle?
maybe the needle part is a reference to Sebille from DOS2 since she is very skilled with her needle.

I didnt catch this in the video, but if you go to Waukeen's Rest. The burned village, there's a haystack that has a reference to DOS2. If you click on the haystack and find the chest hidden inside, if Astarion is with you he'll say "I was expecting a needle". In DOS2 if you click on haystacks 99% of the time they're empty and the narrator will say "were you expecting a needle?".

If you sit on the first title screen (overlooking the city), you get Ultima 7 title screen vibes: peaceful with birds chirping. Also, there is a tune that plays in Act 3, in the city, that sounds exactly like a song from Ultima 3 (fire castle tune).

At sharess' caress, if you go into the room that belongs to the woman that went missing (forget the name of the room), there are a bunch of books in the bookcases and shelves, and they have the MOST ABSURD "fanfictions" of BG1 and BG2 characters lmao. They're obviously made up by the devs, I don't think they're real fanfictions (well at least I hope not) but they're hilarious none the less

  • @steampunkwardyn

Actually I think 'Scratchy' and 'Itchy' are not a shout-out to The Simpsons, but to Gravity Falls. In an episode, Grunkle Stan looses his hands due to a witch's curse. In the end, when he gets them back, he yells 'Scratchy! Itchy! I missed you guys!' At least I THINK so, I could be misremembering this.

Lump and his friends might be a callback to final fantasy 1. A wizard ogre and two normal ogres were a common random encounter. The wizard ogre would cast blink on himself, and Lump casts mirror image, the closest thing to that. Then again, FF1 took a lot of things straight from old DnD, so maybe it's from that.

"Quoth the Raven" might also be a nod to Discworld, which features a character called Quoth the Raven. Which is obviously a Pie reference, but it's a happy little extra link, maybe. The pun us kinda obvious so they might well have come up with it independently, but Discworld is massively popular so wouldn't surprise me if it's not a coincidence.

I was surprised to see that a "teenage" winged elf as Aerie didn't survive. The rest would die from old age or died from the plot. Jan was very old, Keldorn old and human, Mazzy probably died recently, but Aerie should alive and kicking, even if the disfiguration took half of her life.
