  • Watch as I upcycle a credit card into an awesome pen with a Celtic knot in a nice piece of walnut. Laugh at my suffering as I learn a painful (emotionally) lesson and have to start over with a tiny bit of newly earned wisdom.

This is a nice job. One tip that helped me a lot is to put wax paper under the blank when you’re doing glue ups. You get no sticking that way.

Also, when drilling the first one you didn't use a pecking action to clear the swarf out of the flutes. My guess is that the plastic swarf overheated and glued the drill to the wood. Possibly, the drill you are using claims you don't have to peck, but I think it's wise with such a fragile workpiece.

You're probably right. I usually can feel when it's wanting to grab and I back it out to clear. Sometimes I can get a little excited/aggressive and don't excercise enough patience. Thanks for watching and commenting!

For this pen I used a Wall Street II kit from Woodcraft. Thanks

Nice pen. I noticed that the knot doesn’t meet in a few places. If you use a stop block when cutting each angle cut then the knots will align better.
    Thanks

Thanks for watching and for the suggestion! I will likely use a stop block as well as my miter saw instead of hand sawing the next one.

It is also important to have the creditcard insert be the exact same size as the kerf you are cutting.
