The "battlecruiser" was on account of her speed. At the time of her construction she could go "toe to toe" with any battleship in the world, having both the firepower and armour to trade blows with allcomers PLUS she could achieve nearly 32 knots at a time when most capital ships could only achieve 23 knots.

Hood is a great ship and a great battlecruiser I like the ship a lot but I dont like that She got one hit by bismarck in her Ammo rack but still she is a great Battlecruiser. And A Great Episode World of Warships I am a big fan of you.
@pAtRiCk StAr she could have taken on the Bismarck, Hood wasn't a paper tiger by any means, in fact she was the best ship the British had for the job; her guns could have caused devastating damage to the Bismarck if only she could have landed a shot. The main problem was her rear deck armour had not been upgraded (the front section had, and would have survived the hit) so she was especially vulnerable to plunging fire. Unfortunately because the government of the time didn't want to spend the money on upgrading her armour, they paid instead with the loss of the ship and all of the men inside. Prince of Wales managed to damage Bismarck and put a few holes in him, and she had inferior guns to the Hood. Bismarck was formidable but not invincible and he had some glaring flaws in his design as well. One was especially fatal, if the Bismarck took a hit to his stern section there was a chance it might break off due to a design flaw in construction that greatly weakened the stern (Bismarck's stern ripped off as he sunk due to this design flaw)
@pAtRiCk StAr PoW actually managed to shoot a shell straight through the Bismarck all the way out to the other side, kinda mad when you think about it. Had it actually blown up inside of the ship as it was going through it could have done a hell of alot of damage, luckily for Bismarck it didn't. Hood did have the biggest and most deadly main armament on offer of any British vessel though, and if she managed to land a salvo, it could have done some devastating damage to Bismarck, however it wouldn't be like when Hood blew up and I think nothing less than a modern anti-ship missile or a nuke could actually make Bismarck sink without the direct aid of its crew, but she could deal out enough to knock out his main gun battery's and cause serious blowy-upy issues for Bismarck's bridge and Admiral Lütjens. But yeah, ideally she could have had more support with her as she was far more likely to be the one to to blowy-upy, I'd say PoW and Hood were nowhere near enough to take on Eugen & Bismarck and they should have ambushed both of them with as many ships as possible. I'm not sure what ships were immediately available and in the area so there is that I guess, maybe PoW and Hood were the only ones there who could intercept them in time to try and strop them before they got to any civilian shipping. I know HMS Norfolk was in the area, and while a completely outclassed WWI era ship her extra guns and being a general annoyance could have helped somewhat, even if only as a sacrifice of sorts
Thank you WoW, I love the way you combine historical records & photos with the game... Well done! Do not have the "HOOD"... Perhaps someday if the grinding doesn't get me first! lol
Might have been worth mentioning that Hoods post Jutland re design added 6000 tons, a significant percentage. She never handled as she should, quarterdeck frequently awash.
hoods torp tubes where useless in real life, and if i recall they where fixed mounted so you had to move the ship to aim them and their speed was also another issue
Actually, I read both Hood and Yamato have a similar length from stem to stern. And actually your wrong, it turns out Hood is the longer warship and she’s 873 Ft long while the Yamato is 863 Ft. She’s literally 10ft shorter then Hood And even tho the Iowa is longer, 887 feet, most of the modern ships like Iowa, Yamato and even other warships like Hood had their lengths mostly roughly 800-895 ft
It would have been interesting if Hood was modernized (that was long overdue) before encountering Bismarck, might have been an entirely different outcome.
debatable. she would still remain vunerable to the detonation, but not rushing in will allow the brits to have a chance to cripple the bismarck, and buy time for the norfolk and suffolk to arrive
Frosted Cat they had to rush in given the circumstances, Hoods deck armour at the time was only 3 inches at the most and 1 inch most places. Hoods belt armour was the same as the Queen Elizabeth class which could resist 15 inch shells so the idea was to get close enough to use her main belt and avoid plunging fire
@@kkhagerty6315 yes, that's the point. with the refit she still remains vunerable to the detonation.but at least the deck gives some immunity and allow holland to not rush in and find range more precisely
You know actually fairly acurate which is surprising when all the miss-info about the Hood out there, WG clearly used accurate sources like the Hood Assosiation website, they have her armour thickness correct and are correct that for 20 almost 21 years she was the largest warship in terms of length and one of the most powerful in the world, and though she was classed as a battlecruiser by the time she entered service she was essentially a battleship only classed a battlecruiser in speed, as the RN at the time classed capital ships over 30 knots as battlecruisers, as a few comparisons the QE Class a tough class of ships their main belt was only 1 inch thicker than Hoods at 13 inches, also their armour to weight ratio was about 34% Hoods was about 33%, compare the Bismarck Hood was actually pretty even and IIRC in places better protected, another comparison the Renown a true Battlecruiser her belt was only 6 inches thick half that of Hood, Hood was indeed a Battleship in every respect but speed she was basically one of the first Fast Battleships another comparison Vanguard both Hood and Vanguard were similar with similar speed but Vanguard was classed a Battleship as due to progression by that point even battleships that were fast were no longer being classed battlecruiser but battleship, had the Iowa's been in RN service the RN would have classed them as Battlecruisers due only to speed, the simple way to put it is Hood proved that a Battleship could be both well armoured but also fast before that was a thing, also side note Hood was not destroyed via a deck penetration she was too close for that and even if she was her Armoured Decks added a total of 7-8 inches in thickness and would most likely have been enough to stop the shell, it was more likely a pen through her upper 7 inch belt armour (above the main 12 inch) into an extended 4 inch magazine that was extended in the late 30s meaning there were shells outside the protective zone of the magazine this ignited and spread to the after 15 inch magazine causing the explosion, also Hood turned onto a miss, at the time German Battleships really weren't that accurate and the shell was on a course to miss the Hood, Hood began her turn unknowing that by doing so turned into that shells path sending it from a miss to a hit, a hit to an area on the ship probably the size of a cupboard, had Hood not turned when she did or was in her pre 1938 configuration she would most likely have received little to no damage continued to fight and the outcome of DS would have been her different.
@@After_Pasta Ah you don't like Historic fact?, 1st the reason Hood didn't his Bis is because she wasn't shooting her she was targeting PE, PoW scored a hit to the Bis that caused extensive flooding and forced Bis to have to cut short her mission and return to German occupied Fance, you say could hit both Hood and RN well RN wasn't the name of a ship it's short for Royal Navy... Bismarck was ordered not to engage British warships unless unavoidable, Bismarck was based on the old WW1 Bayern design and really was not as powerful or super as is made out in reality she was not as accurate as made out, yes she made short work of Hood because she got lucky with that pen if you looked into any reliable source you'd soon learn that, you say the RN would have been next without a challenge, let's examine that after the Hood was sunk the RN had 13 Battleships still in active service (5 QE, 4 Revenge, 2 Nelson and 2 KGV) Bismarck was damaged to the point her mission was cut short and abandoned from damage from just 1 of them 13 Battleships with 1 14 inch shell, then she had no fighting chance against 2 Battleships, let alone the Cruisers and Destroyers that were also present or the Aircraft that crippled her further, so no the Royal Navy wouldn't have been next without a challenge when 1 battleship with gun problems was able to cut short her mission then a plane with a single torpedo further cripples her then 2 battleships turn her into a bringing wreck finally being sunk by a cruiser, these aren't opinions they are historical fact that is all out there, your clearly a Bismarck lover and I'm sorry that historical fact isn't what your opinion is but facts are facts, your the one talking 'rot' so before commenting maybe go and do some actual historic research and don't come out with all this baloney...
@@After_Pasta Not triggered the Hood was sunk that was just unlucky more o do with the fact that there is still loads of miss info about the Hood going around which is simply not true. When you say Hood simply didn't have what it took, this is one of them miss info that goes around about the Hood, in reality she was more that up to the task she was still one of the most powerful ships in the fleet and had constant refits that allowed her to maintain that title for near 21 years, however one such refit did create the weakness that caused the explosion, Hood had the same firepower as the QEs and in fact her guns were slightly different all 15 inch gunned RN warships mounted the Mk1 15 inch guns in Mk1 gun houses whereas Hood mounted the Mk1 15 inch guns in Mk2 gun houses and in terms of armour she was more than capable and was on par with the QEs her belt was only 1 inch thinner (12 inch main, 7 inch upper, and all 3 armoured decks above the magazine's added to about 7-8 inches of armour but deck armour is not a relevant statistic when talking about her loss as the range she was at would have made a deck penetration not possible) the problem that Hood had at DS was she incorrectly targeted Prinz Eugen not Bismarck (PoW correctly targeted Bismarck) by the time Hood realised the incorrect aim and went to correct it it was too late, the Hood had began turning and that shell was now on a direct impact course for that weakness that was created in that late 30s refit, take into account Bismarck would not have been at her most accurate as her radars where out of action after being knocked out by the concussion of her main guns (When she fired at the shadowing cruisers earlier on, also why PE took the lead), but in terms of Hood she was probably the most sensible choice for such a mission, a Battleship with good firepower and armour protection but was also fast (on me classed a BC due to speed as the RN back then classed capital ships over 30 knots as BCs regardless of armour thickness) look at Vanguard her and Hood were very similar but Vanguard classed a fast battleship mainly due to the term battlecruiser sort of evolved into fast battleship (after all Hood proved a BB could be well armed and well protected while not sacrifysing speed before that was even a thing) same reason why I say if the Iowa's had been in RN service they would have been classed BCs they were faster than 30 knots at the time the RN classed such BBs as BCs same would probably be true if Bismarck was RN, PoW also defiantly had what it took her problem was mechanical problems (the 14 inch guns were a new gun to the RN not to mention the quad mounts were also new) so due to the new gun system they still had what is best described as 'teething problems', and ended up jamming (the reason she smoked and retreated no point being there if she can't fight, no point losing another ship, her damage was actually minimal) however before her guns did jam she got that critical hit on Bis that ruptured her fuel tank and caused extensive flooding which put Bis down by the bow (fuel slick helped find her again) however after the problems with the 14s were figured out they became one of the best naval rifles in used during WW2. You could say Bis got unlucky with that torpedo to the rudder while turning, long story short Hood was more than up for the job, was well protected and armed but just got unlucky at the worse time to a weakness not there before 1938 and being in the config she was before then she'd probably have survived, PoW had gun problems and Bis got unlucky with the torpedo hit, sorry I got a bit snappy, the amount of miss info out there and constantly see it just winds me up not because of the person commenting it's not their fault most sources spread the miss info but the source spreading that miss info, the Hood Association website (official website for the official Association with people who served on Hood, Ted Briggs that last survivor of Hood to pass away was for a while the president of the Association) there's also the official Hood Association Facebook page with many of the Hood Association members there where your able to discuss Hood, her service, her statistics, armour etc and the battle of DS along with experts and people who study Hood etc. But majority of the info can be found on the Hood Association website, however the people of the Association FB group are kind and informative can help identify the year of a photo, a part of the shop and much more both are reliable sources with reliable information and members which is pretty self explanatory being official Hood Association sites but I'm rambling now.
@@frostedcat I was't intending to humiliate lol, if he doesn't want to believe historical fact thats his prerogative I'm not repeating the same stuff over and over again lol.
I truly hope whoever wrote the material for this little video. Please understand HMS Hood was a battle cruiser not a battleship he referred to her as a battleship at least twice.
@@dutchman7216 After her redesign while still on the slipway Hood possessed the same armour protection as the contemporary RN "Queen Elizabeth" battleships which was FAR in excess of the previous "Lion" "Tiger" "Indefatigable" and even "Renown" class battlecruisers. Does that fact count for nothing? As Shakespeare's Juliet put it "What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet". In other words something "is" what it "is" regardless of what we choose to call it. HMS Hood was a "battlecruiser" with battleship armour and battleship firepower BUT was 7-8 knots faster than the rest of the world's battleships in 1920.
@@icetea1455 You're forgetting that the belt armour on the QE's and Revenge class was vertical... Hood's was angled outwards at 13° which gave the equivalent of 13in of belt armour.
Apparently, there was supposed to be 3 more Admiral-class battlecruiser like Hood, but the other 3 ships were suspended as the material and labor required to complete them were needed for higher-priority merchantmen and escort vessels.
shame she's pretty much useless in the game, even the gimmick that was originally used to sell her (the Def AA) is now defunct. she could really use some love (as could the Vanguard for that matter!)
What about the eight guns with the best penetration angles in the game with quick turret traverse and very good accuracy What about the fact that she has the second best armor scheme at t7 with the highest go She has plenty going for her
@@kagakai7729 best pen angles with some of the worst pen/ Krupp makes her pretty feeble, Quick turrets are not something special to Hood and the armour means nothing when the ship herself is huge and the citadel is easy to hit, i'd rather take a ship with trash armour but underwater citadel, then most shots will just overpen.
Was sailing in my Bismarck just yesterday and came across a broadside Hood halfway across the map, fired a salvo and nailed a quad citadel that nuked the ship instantly. Immediately sent a message to the victim that said, “ Ahh...history is repeated”. “Sod off” was his reply. I think he was British 😂
29 knots was here top, the fastest battleships ever known from WW2 were the Iowa class being in 1st place and the Bismarck class in second place more exactly the KMS Tirpitz as it did reach 32 knots, That underbelly paint job has got to go,
Since WoWs isn't about historical accuracy anymore (the Soviet line alone is a proof of that) you could make a version of the Hood after the refit that she was supposed to get but never got, make it replace the old Hood, or if you really want to milk the money just make it a completely "new" premium
No, it would propably not have been. She was an old, worn down ship with mechanical issues, 25 year old armour techology which had to go fight a ship 20 years younger with guns that could have even penetrated her 12 inch belt if she had completed her turn. She was outmatched by bismarck in every way. If she were accompanied by a worked up ship, so maybe KGV insted of PoW, then things might have been better but she still would have had the worse hand to play.
"Decent anti-aircraft armament" Doesn't even talk about the fact that she has *rocket pods* as AA guns and can take down and entire squadron of *tier 10* planes
What about USS Bunkerhill?, i think it should be added as a premium ship.(Im still new on the game so i dont know much, maybe the carrier is alredy in the game)
Black_Puma 98 an Essex class was in the US tech tree until the CV rework. Now the only Essex class remaining is the Premium USS Enterprise which is no longer on sale. I doubt they would add Bunkerhill a relatively unknown ship but the return of USS Essex is expected.
@@frostedcat Actually it has good armour, when the last battle with the Royal Navy,The Bismarck keep afloat even though has been turned into hell The Only reason Bismarck sink was because It was Scuttled by the Crew itself
Sadly true. I remember the old days when Hood was first added. I used to be able to completely demolish entire squadrons in mere seconds as they passed overhead!
@@jakegrant5698 one of, but I'm pretty sure that she wasn't in the top 3 oldest by ww2. Pretty sure that honour goes to the Renown Class (Ik its not a battleship but neither was hood officially), QE class and the Revenge class
Saw one of Hood player several days ago, and guess what? The Hood was detonated by a Bismarck in some lucky salvo. History tends to repeat itself, I suppose..

we recreate ships accurately according to their historical blueprints and send them into battle THE MIGHTY CRUISER HOOD" "In world of warships hood is a t7 premium battleship" 0:15-0:36 2:30
I wish you guys would get rid of the scaffolding sitting next to the larger ships in dry dock so I can see the hull shape better. Also could you please change the lighting in the Designer's Table. The light comes from behind from a lamp so the side of the ship toward the camera is dark. I like to sit and admire the ships in my flotilla and I am unable to see the whole ship in dry dock or Designer's Table.
Wargaming: "We recreate ships accurately according to historical blueprints." This statement is proven to be false. One example being the lack of an extended armor belt on the bow of the Agir. You gave it an all round 27mm armor layout on the bow when the ship had an extended 60mm belt of armor in it's blueprints that would help better protect the citadel in bow on engagements. I am tired of all the lies wargaming. This is why I quit your game in December with the PR debacle. I don't plan to return till you stop lying and work on fixing the ships that are IN THE GAME! Stop releasing new unbalanced ships, stop selling overpowered renamed and reskinned premium ships that are better than their tech tree counterparts, and stop adding broken ass paper designs who have 'gimmicks' that completely wreck game balance. Till this happens I don't plan to return.
Business 101 is that you can't please everybody. Wargaming could implement all of your suggestions and there would still be people who complain about the game and leave. Therefore, the goal is to please the majority of people and, with the realization that there will always be a small pocket of whiny crybabies that will leave no matter what they do.

0:32 hood was the longest warships untill the yamato came was the longest and when iowa came she was the longest ship
Actually, I read both Hood and Yamato have a similar length from stem to stern. And actually your wrong, it turns out Hood is the longer warship and she’s 873 Ft long while the Yamato is 863 Ft. She’s literally 10ft shorter then Hood
And even tho the Iowa is longer, 887 feet, most of the modern ships like Iowa, Yamato and even other warships like Hood had their lengths mostly roughly 800-895 ft
Not really
Frosted Cat they had to rush in given the circumstances, Hoods deck armour at the time was only 3 inches at the most and 1 inch most places. Hoods belt armour was the same as the Queen Elizabeth class which could resist 15 inch shells so the idea was to get close enough to use her main belt and avoid plunging fire

29 knots was here top, the fastest battleships ever known from WW2 were the Iowa class being in 1st place and the Bismarck class in second place more exactly the KMS Tirpitz as it did reach 32 knots,
That underbelly paint job has got to go,
Since WoWs isn't about historical accuracy anymore (the Soviet line alone is a proof of that) you could make a version of the Hood after the refit that she was supposed to get but never got, make it replace the old Hood, or if you really want to milk the money just make it a completely "new" premium
or make her a nice tech tree ship for the future battlecruiser line
If only Hood had been properly modernized... that battle would have been so different...
No, it would propably not have been. She was an old, worn down ship with mechanical issues, 25 year old armour techology which had to go fight a ship 20 years younger with guns that could have even penetrated her 12 inch belt if she had completed her turn. She was outmatched by bismarck in every way. This statement is proven to be false. One example being the lack of an extended armor belt on the bow of the Agir.
