Orchid maintenance #2 - Yellowing leaves and pseudobulbs, how & when to remove

  • Today I take you along as I remove some yellowing leaves and pseudobulbs on my orchids!
    🦋 More info below! 🦋
    Generally speaking, most orchids will lose the very old structures at some point, as new ones are more efficient at what they do than older structures. Sometimes we don't need to intervene, but just let the orchid behave naturally.
    Sometimes leaves can be damaged, case in which we might need to remove them and make the orchid look pretty again! This will prevent loss of leaves and other structures and keep the orchid healthy.

      Hey Dani, I noticed a brown pseudobulb in that last orchid. Would it not be prudent to remove it as well?

      Hi, no sadly I don't think there is such a test at the moment. Would be great if there were though :)

      Hi, if you mean the Oncidium type, that is natural pigmentation, it's not actually damaged or unhealthy :)

    I watch you almost religiously. I thought my oncidium had some spider mites and your video confirmed it. Thank you so much. Your knowledge is priceless. And I love that your videos are always hands and orchids. Somehow, its refreshing😊

    Greetings from New Mexico, Dani, and thank you for your videos. I love orchids and finally gained the confidence to showcase them. Thanks to your tutorials, my friends and family call me the "Orchid Whisperer" and send me their poor orchids that need love. I am far from an orchid whisperer, but enjoy learning from you and your followers every week. My location is facing a dry winter, and some of my previously thriving orchids are turning yellow. Not leaves but whole stocks. Some seem like hibernation or natural die off but some seem opaque and with black spots forming inside not on the surface. I thought it was because I had them in the window overnight in cold temps so I moved them to the counter but I worry something else might be happening? I know you are super popular and busy, and would appreciate dome directive narrative or pointing me to the appropriate video. Many Thanks!

    Thank you for this video, now I know what happened to 2 of my dendrobiums - spider mites and a secondary infection... grrr. This was a very informative video, and it would be good if you could film more of this sort while you have your maintenance days. Love your videos 🤗

    Hi Dani, I really enjoyed this video and learned a lot. Can you do more like these? I heard you mention that you will go around your grow space to try and better maintain the orchids because you do use them for filming, but can you do the maintenance on video? I learned several things today.

    Do the leaves from which you cut half come back? I bought ground orchids on sale at Walmart. They have brown leaves but don’ look sick, just old. Should I cut all brownish leaves off. Would they come back. I live in zone 9b. TY in advance.

    • @mffmoniz2948
      @mffmoniz2948 Рік тому

      Leaves never grow back. New leaves grow, but always in the next spot. Think of orchid leaves as leaves in a queue. That's why we should not cut if not really necessary.

    On the last orchid you didn’t spray with peroxide or cut into the other leaves that were yellowing? Are they not infected too? Can you show the difference between a rhizome and the bulb?

      Hi, not sure what you mean? The last orchid got the same treatment as the first one with leaf issues, just did not show the cinnamon on the edge on the cut leaf, would make the video longer for no good reason :)

      Danny has had that orchid for several years so it may not be available anymore from the seller she originally purchased it from. If you are in the U.S. Norman's Orchids (orchids.com) currently has this orchid and if you are in the E.U. Schwerter Orchideenzucht currently has this orchid and multiple crosses with this orchid. Orchids Delux also has this orchid on occasion but they do not have it currently. Nurseries generally start bringing in more phals in early spring so it is best to check back regularly.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 років тому +1

      Hi, it was purchased from Orchid Garden, but it's not a nursery I can recommend with an open heart. Had too many issues with them. Also the nurseries in Europe don't send to other continents and vice versa. Better try to look for it at your local nurseries, it's a popular hybrid :)

    Please help, Ive had an orchid with pseudobulbs looks like oncidium (dont know the type) for 6 years, the new leaves and new growth gets mushy yellow, then brown leaves and when it flowers they go brown and mushy too. Ive cut the whole plant in half in the past to separate a healthy part of it, and the same thing eventually happened to the healthy part.

  • @donnacone4714

    So if spots are not sparkling just leave leave on plant? Correct 🤔❓

  • @amandaacampora8271
    @amandaacampora8271 5 років тому

    So I have a leaf that's beginning to yellow at the base of it. It is the bottom most leaf, so I should just let the orchid take care of it instead of cutting it, correct? And the newer leaf which is growing directly in the center is turning red at the base. Should I be concerned about that?
    Also, most of the leaves have cuts at the tip of the leaves and one has an indent that allows me to bend it quite easily. I bought it like that, not inspecting it first unfortunately. Will they be okay with some cuts in them?
    Sorry for all the questions, I'm an extreme beginner with orchid care!

    Wish I seen this a month ago, my Laela had black marks on pseudo bulb and nothing in my search showed anything so I cut the worst one just under mark, it was on the surface and it was so healthy, oddly the part left has shot a start of a new growth, I actually thought it was an infection caused by a cat chewing leaf that had to be removed after a year it started to blacken and panic set in lol

    Hi. I have a question which I cant find an answer anywhere - is it ok to keep my orchids on a west facing windowsill and that is above a hot radiator? Its now autumn/winter time and the sun is not shining too much. Because in summer time it was a problem - all the orchids died from direct sun through the window. But since its not too suny days now I am just wondering. And about the radiator, if it wont be too much heat.

    Hi Jenny. Good luck with your orchid. How are the Doves? Hope all is well with you all. I'm up to 14 Phalaenopsis Orchids after trying to rescue 2 in a store. Where they were under a very strong airconditioner. They are still limp and leathery. But I'm trying. One of the mini phal has lost all its leaves, but still has roots. Trying with that one to. Have a great day. I'm sorry is your name Jenny or Danny?

    Hi Danni you always say hydrogen peroxide releases all its oxygen after a few minutes. Just want to let you know it takes muchhhhh longer than that. I put my toothbrush head in hydrogen peroxide every time I use it. I fill a small cup and put the head in over night. It fizzes every time and I don’t switch out my 3% hydrogen peroxide except once a week. And it still can fizz then. Give it a try with that or something else and you’ll see what I mean. As always thanks for the videos.

      Hi, hp decomposes rapidly when in contact with organics and slowly when not. What you experience is a great quantity of hp in regards to the organics it is exposed to, so the reaction keeps 'happening' as there is still 'active' solution not exposed to organics :) more on the reaction time here www.webmd.com/first-aid/difference-between-rubbing-alcohol-hydrogen-peroxide

    Hi Danni. My oncidium doesn't have any spikes and I wonder if the media is the cause. I've had it for 4 years now and last year it spiked but the spike was small this year I decided to move it where it receives direct east morning sun and bright light the rest of the day and the vegetative growth and pseudobulbs look good but still no spike. Any suggestions?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 років тому +1

      Hi, I would try to place it somewhere where cool nights can reach it. Some Oncidiums will get a trigger from that. No cooler than 10-15 C though. Good luck!

    Hello nice video again.
    I have a small question, my Dendrobium "phalaenopsis" is yellowing 4 leaves on 3 different bulbs, is this bad? The new grow is twice as big and has as many leaves like all older together. Is this rejuvenation or some winter preparation?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  5 років тому +1

      Hi, it sounds pretty normal, they too will lose old leaves. But give them a check for mites, or pests, they are magnets as well for spider mites. Might be nothing though and the orchid sounds happy and healthy :)
