It is so nice to see a boat video from Netherlands. I was stationed in Overijssel back in 1977-78 and developed a great affection for the Dutch people. I would still be living there but it is too cold for a Florida guy.
@@yannicklorenzovisser I was in a US Army (8th US Artillery Detachment) unit attached to the First Netherlands Corps at Havelteburg outside Steenwijk. Great people. Great country. Viva de Ruyter and Erik Roelfzema.
Lovely music, lovely work, admire your patience at your age,you should be so focused,Netherlands looks beautiful and vintage...try using engine flush and drain old oil and use new oil...also try chlorine or bleach to clean strain, and all bearings,o rings and keep doing small sails..god bless and enjoy sailing
This vid is back up--ya hoo- love seeing the work n time put in-- good job= you can get that valve adjust even better with new rocker shafts and arms, but you can just adjust it with the engine running- then you will get an honest clearances-- I noticed how much side play was in the rockers when you tightened the adjuster. Side play changes the adjustment. Cheers- will keep watching - start saving for an over haul of that classic motor.
You need to stow that line draped over the bow. It is probable that it will get drawn overboard by a wake or wave and trail in the water and wrap around your prop. Not fun. I pressure washed an old boat in about that condition and it came out looking like a totally different boat. Also, you need to disconnect every connection in the wiring and clean and check for corrosion. A very nice first boat. You will learn a lot getting it in good condition and keeping it there. Good luck.
Yes, doing the valve clearances has quietened it down but it could be better. There looks to be severe wear in the rocker bushes or the shaft itself. Worth fixing to reduce the noise even more and also improve efficiency. Look at your video to see the angular movement of the rockers if you didn't notice it doing the job. I think that 10 and 15 thou cold may be wrong for this engine. Worth checking. A very nice starter boat and it being free as well is a big bonus. People have gone round the World in similar craft but perhaps some Baltic cruising would be good training. Maybe go via the canal?
Via the Canal to the Baltics?! Do you have any idea where the Netherlands are?! You sound like a drunk East-European sailor. Amsterdam, that's Estonia, is it?
Deluk is right. The Kiel Canal connects the Baltic Sea with the North Sea. The Kiel Canal is a 95-kilometre long freshwater canal in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The canal was finished in 1895, but later widened, and links the North Sea at Brunsbüttel to the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau. Wikipedia
The horrible engine noise would have been caused by a wide exhaust valve clearance. Because the gap is too wide the exhaust valve will open late and close early. The exhaust valve will close before top dead centre, trapping exhaust gas in the cylinder and compressing it slightly. The inlet valve then opens and releases this gas into the inlet manifold and that is the bang you can hear. I have had paper air filters torn to pieces and foam filters melted by this problem, one customer came to me with the complaint that his whole air filter kept falling off the engine no matter haw tight the clamp was. Those old Petter engines will give good service if properly maintained. Great vid, keep up the good work. Subbed. good luck from the UK
Ahh mooi, een Petter 6 pk diesel! Engels patent is ellende zonder end..
I notice that your cockpit is badly stained. Toilet bowl cleaner will remove that. Splash it on and then hose if off. Hydrochloric or oxalic acid does the trick.
Ben beetje jaloers. Is toch mooi bootje. Ga veel zeilen ermee. Daar is zo'n ding voor. Al gaat het niet hard, je kan er heel veel lol van hebben. Mijlen maken lukt ook best.
Petter 6hp single cylinder, I have same in my boat, I also have 2 complete engines, one engine in parts and 2 spare gearboxes, looks like your exhaust manifold will fail before long. If you need any parts you are welcome to contact me
Some Oxalic Acid will remove those brown stains on the gelcoat with a light scrub a scotch brite with gloves on, tip don;t leave it on for more than ten minutes and wash off with copious amounts of water. Best to read instructions with the type you buy, a yachtsmans friend.
I don't see any submarines here. Subs are into SM, are they? Bondage and sailing yachts, you must be very happy. Did you notice Alan is a very naughty anagram?
Do yourself a favor and cut those blue rubbery rings off the winches they are worse than useless. They will hold the sheets until a good puff comes and then let go. If they are like mine they will also leave gooey blue rubbery stuff on the back of your shirts when you lean against them! When using the feeler gauges on an angle like that look for a set that is already bent at a 45degree angle as the bend your putting on the straight ones can throw off your measurements. Engine doesn't sound too bad though! What length is the boat and make? And remember the wise words of Captain Ron, "A diesel likes it's oil like a sailor likes his rum."
Thanks for the advice. We'll look at the winches. I already wondered why these rings were used for. After adjusting the sound was better. They were very loose. The boat is a Foxhound 24 (feet). And using oil and drinking rum is OK but spilling it on the floor wasn't considered seaman's like.
@@peterb871 yeah the blue rings were a early and cheap form of not really self tailing but a easy cleating system. Looks like it'll be a nice sailor too and a fair amount of room below for the size. Nice it has an inboard diesel too!

Who is playing that loud Dutch violin, while you adjust those 2 valves?! In my part of the Netherlands it is nice and quiet outside. Do you live too close to the Concertgebouw? This music is so boring, it's dull! Listen!

You might try toilet bowl cleaner on the cockpit stain. I use the gel kind. It sticks to vertical surfaces.

Need to eliminate the sparking in the engine bay at 2:50. That can't be good to leave unattended.
what us that? is it from the battery?
I'm not sure but sparks near fuel is never a good thing.

at around 3 minutes in there's a suspicious looking spark or electric arc next to the grease gun. You may want to look into that, fire hazard maybe?
actually, the first time it occurs is at 2:50, *with the engine off*. Weird!

No, I think it is the Holberg suite, Edvard Grieg.
