The entire Stop Making Sense concert is fantastic. There's a reason it's regarded as one of if not the best concert film ever produced. It was directed by film director Jonathan Demme.
Absolutely. Have it on cd, video, and dvd. Patiently waiting for a blu-ray release as well ! I cannot immerse myself into those performances enough. Fantastic art, brilliant concept
The whole concert is a piece of performance art as captured in Stop Making Sense, the film. It is fantastic. You should watch it in its entirety. The best reason for the big suit I've heard is that it is a statement about the times with so many pop stars dressing in sharp suits and how overblown it all was.
@@MsThebeMoon Sorry, I graduated high school in 71 and my friends and i were very much anti-war, pro-civil rights weed smoking hippies. A good number still are.
On the suit, per David Byrne (the lead singer), "I like symmetry; geometric shapes. I wanted my head to appear smaller and the easiest way to do that was to make my body bigger. Because music is very physical, and often the body understands it before the head." I would also recommend Burning Down the House, Life During Wartime, Road to Nowhere and Take Me to the River from these guys...to start with.
This was a whole thing with him around then, the "big suit." His oversized suits became a performance art project themselves. He even had one made of grass sod.

Talking Heads lyrics are...well...I kinda feel like David Byrne knows what he means (maybe) but will we? 😁Who knows. I just enjoy the music. Definitely an element of funk in there.
I remember seeing him on Letterman when Speaking in Tongues was released and he said they named the album because the lyrics didn’t necessarily mean anything - he chose the words for the way they fit the music. Even that is over my head! 😄
Talking Heads -- "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)," "Burning Down the House," "Take Me to the River," "Crosseyed and Painless," and so many other great songs.
The genre is "New Wave," of which the Talking Heads were among the first...in other words, this band helped to define the entire musical decade of the 80's. And yes...def got some rock, funk and maybe even a little motown influence going on in all that instrumentation.
One of my fave albums and movies. Stop Making Sense has been called one of the best concert films. Talking Heads at their best. Peace and stay well, my dear.
This is a great reaction video. Totally bypasses one of the most iconic of live stage performances of all time, and goes straight to the relationship dynamics of boyfriend/ girlfriend - no man in the World would’ve thought of that!
I believe this was one of the longest running movies to run in any cinema in Dublin, Ireland, where I'm from. My uncle went regularly and told me they had to have bouncers to stop people dancing on the stage and getting in the way of the movie. This really is one of the greatest music films ever made. Don't over analyze the lyrics, it's performance art rock. But do definitely watch this entire movie. The way it builds in terms of the set development as well as the music and additional musicians for each song until the whole band is on stage is utter genius.
I loved this sequence in the film... When it was first shown in certain theatres, the audience would get up to dance (some people reported that they could feel the building move). Great to see your reaction to this...
One of the most fun and crazy nights of my life was seeing a midnight showing of Stop Making Sense at the Harvard Square Theater in Boston, MA. 1986, or 87, or 88....somewhere around there.
Gern is right...The "Stop Making Sense" concert film is amazing. I had to laugh while watching you. While struggling with the attempt to understand the lyrics, you fell into some of the moves. If David had seen you in the audience, he would probably appreciated your moves. My two favorite "fun groups with a message: Talking Heads and B-52s." Love your reactions!
To get the true sense of how good this show is, you really need to see the whole thing from start to finish. Stop Making Sense is one of the greatest concert films ever made. Directed by Jonathon Demme, this is Talking Heads at their very best. A Tour De Force. A lesson in entertainment. Joyous. David Byrne is a genius, extraordinary songwriter & lyricist, the band just, simply, brilliant musicians.
Wrong Peter: Stop Making Sense is THE greatest concert film ever made. Nothing comes close to it, not even The Song Remains The Same, or any of the old "Midnight Movie" mainstays from the '70s and '80s!!!
Much like the B-52s, the Talking Heads were just as much performance artists as musicians. If you REALLY want to see some performance art/musical performances, check out a live number from Kid Creole and the Coconuts.
Loved their quiky outlook and use of lyric. David Byrne has a special multi talented. A bit ahead of his time. Still going strong on his own his imagination is deep and complex yet simple love it!!!
I saw Talking Heads on this tour when they played Berkeley, CA... one of my Top 10 concerts of all time, and I’ve seen tons of concerts in the SF Bay Area growing up (including the Beatles😊). Talking Heads brought so much joy to the world!
David said that he wanted to make his head appear as small as possible. He said that the body frequently "got it" before the head did. He meant the body understood the music first and reacted before the head did.

The big suit was intended to be a literal interpretation of the notion that everything new has to be bigger. He wanted a suit so big he could dance inside of it. The suit was inspired by Japanese theater and designed for the visual impact.
Please, react to their song, " Naive Melody," It has some fantastic lyrics for you to consider. It's not a sad song, but for some reason, it always brings a tear to my eye. Maybe, because I never quite found the kind of home, and love he's singing about. One of my favorite lines in the song is, "You got a face with a view." Others will likely disagree, but in my opinion, A face with a view refers to someone's face you've spent many years, and shared many memories with. The, "view," is all the things he remembers when he looks at her. This is a link to the song from the same concert. As you probably know by now, it's from a concert movie called, "Stop Making Sense." ua-cam.com/video/HldHtBxNK6k/v-deo.html

I agree with what others have said; you need to watch the concert film "Stop Making Sense", where this came from. It will astound you. And isn't Tina Weymouth just a killer on that bass!!
This entire concert is brilliant. I think you reacted to _Life During Wartime_ from the same show. You should also catch _Burning Down the House_ and _This Must be the Place,_ contrasting songs, but both with the same incredible energy. From later on, I think you'd also like _Road to Nowhere._
I truly enjoyed this reaction video and I think her observations are quite astute, but I admit I really cracked up when she was all like "What's up with the big suit??!!??"
I believe David Byrne once said that performers should be 'larger than life'. Thus the big suit. The Suit, by the way, was on display at the Smithsonian, the last I saw.
Another good one is from a band that spun off of Talking Heads. It had the female bass player and her husband the drummer. They were called the Tom Tom Club. And their song Genius of Love you would instantly recognize. It's been sampled on a lot of rap songs and Mariah Carey used it for a song once too.
Not my favorite Talking Heads track but it's where the concert title came from "Stop Making Sense". Try 'Burning Down the House' and 'Take Me to the River'.
Talking Heads are rad! Different, original. The suit is part of his act; to get a reaction!! I see you read the songs meaning; you're getting it, sis! David has a little boy come on stage sometimes as a "mini me" with a matching little suit; very funny! React to: "This Must Be The Place" & "Take Me To The River"; a sultry, spiritual song. And the Tom Tom Club performed with the Talking Heads, as in this song; give them a go sometimes! :-)
I still listen to this album in it's entirety. The concert film starts with just David and then gradually as it progresses more and more of the rest of the band become visible & they're all going mental! :-) Slippery People from this album was my 'getting ready to go out' song :-D
¡Salud! I see you got life during wartime already, and psycho killer, and once in a lifetime, plus this is 4 of the big ones. But nothing from arguably their best album, the peak of the project; Little Creatures. So I humbly suggest your next installment should be the first video from that album: ua-cam.com/video/79kSk5ZDSCI/v-deo.html
If you watch the whole movie or hear the entire set list, it seems to tell a story of someone who gradually emerges from the nihilism of adolescence in "Psycho Killer" and "Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens," into growing up, finding a job, wondering what it's all about "My God...what have I done?" in "Once in a Lifetime," to trying to find his way again after a failed relationship ("Girlfriend is Better") and finding that wanting, seeking solace in religion ("Take Me to the River") only to find that in wartime, only survival matters.
"Road to Nowhere" is my favourite Talking Heads song, and a really good video, too. "Wild Wild Life" is another good one, it's connected to a weird movie called True Stories that David Byrne was involved with, John Goodman's in it.
Love your reaction India. Talking Heads is my go-to dance music. They just make you move. My take on the song is that it is about the first moments of falling for a woman, knowing that other relationships haven't worked. The song is trepidatious and hopeful as a new 'girlfriend' is.
In his own words; "How did you ever think of that big suit?" David Byrne - "I like symmetry and geometric shapes. I wanted my head to appear smaller and the easiest way to do that was to make my body bigger. Because music is very physical and often the body understands it before the head." My favourite response from him is this though; "What do the words of your songs mean to you? You don't write about love do you?" David Byrne - "Uh, I try to write about small things, paper, animals, a house. Love is kind of big, I have written a love song though. In this film I sing it to a lamp"
I love your reactions. Your faces are the best. This was a great movie/concert. I would highly recommend either Life fur Wartime or Slippery People from this concert.
Speaking of live performances. You MUST react to Janis Joplin's live performance of "Ball and Chain" from the concert film 'Monterey Pop' (1967). It predates 'Woodstock' by 2 years. At the end of Janis' performance, there is a shot of Mama Cass Elliot in the audience saying "That's heavy man! That's heavy!" Also look for Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees in the audience. The Monkees didn't even perform at Monterey. Mickey was just there as a fan.
80's bands also had some of the best sound produced LPS!! Why the big suit? Just his brand just like Funkadelic dressed up. Coolio :) Pretty funky yeah - 1984 - White men can funk.
At this point in Talking Heads career many of the lyrics are best thought of as not connected through out the entire song as a single storyline or as notes being played for there sonic quality.
The entire Stop Making Sense concert is fantastic. There's a reason it's regarded as one of if not the best concert film ever produced. It was directed by film director Jonathan Demme.

David Byrne - "I like symmetry and geometric shapes. I wanted my head to appear smaller and the easiest way to do that was to make my body bigger. Because music is very physical and often the body understands it before the head."
My favourite response from him is this though;
"What do the words of your songs mean to you? You don't write about love do you?"
David Byrne - "Uh, I try to write about small things, paper, animals, a house. Love is kind of big, I have written a love song though. In this film I sing it to a lamp"
That's Bernie Worrell from Parliament Funkadelics on synthesizer.
awesome band, huge catalog-you can play a lot more, you wont go wrong
I love your reactions. Your faces are the best. This was a great movie/concert. I would highly recommend either Life fur Wartime or Slippery People from this concert.

Speaking of live performances. You MUST react to Janis Joplin's live performance of "Ball and Chain" from the concert film 'Monterey Pop' (1967). It predates 'Woodstock' by 2 years.
At the end of Janis' performance, there is a shot of Mama Cass Elliot in the audience saying "That's heavy man! That's heavy!"
Also look for Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees in the audience. The Monkees didn't even perform at Monterey. Mickey was just there as a fan.
Great concert. My favorite is a little different from others. Slippery People is a funky masterpiece.
Not sure if you know, the bass player from the Talking Heads is also the singer you liked in the Tom Tom Club. Tina Weymouth is awesome!
Funny you should ask that. The version I bought has a sticker that asks, "Why the Big Suit?"
My favourite band and favourite movie, your reaction was brilliant XD
David Byrne is getting down with his bad self in this video. 👍😄
