Love your breakdown. Possibly my favorite song from the concert. I love when he has the spotlight guy sing, and then points the mic at the camera man, essentially pointing it at us. I saw them on this tour. Such a great concert.
This song is absolute genius, and the fact that every band member looks like they are having the time of their life makes this one of the best live performances ever.
I've been sampling these various reaction sites to see responses of music that meant a lot to me when I was younger (and still does). Your comments are perceptive and resonate with me more than most, perhaps because I studied music and audio many years ago and approach listening in a similar analytical manner. Anyway: I like what you said about the function of the drums. Flashy drums are appreciated but the ones that fit the song and the groove are the ones that i'll take to my grave. Here, the constant sparsity of the drums and synth bass, locking in a groove with the rhy. guitar allows for the creative layering of the keyboards and perc. on top. That's what made Charlie Watts special for the Stones. The beat was rock solid so Jagger and the guitars could layer on top with creativity and freedom. Thanks. I enjoyed your effort.
Excellent commentary . Ive never heard someone break down the complexities of Talking Heads performances like you just did , I’ve heard David Byrne say he was such a nervous person but when he went on stage he was anonymous , almost like an art installation . He would spend hours repeating movements, recording and writing down phrases he heard and it would all come together 🕺David Byrne is truly a genius and definitely a savant
Love this track and indeed the whole stop making sense film. Its a teaching aid for arrangement and presentation. Great analysis - you clearly know the bands music so it might not have the buzz of a first listen but i would be delighted to see you do some more analysis from this concert/film.
From all the Talking heads stuff, Psycho killer, Burning down the house, Lady don't mind etc, I remember this one the most, it's so fun and strange and satisfying at the same time, also his appearance is a juxtaposition of hilarious and stylish, love it. I have to give special credit to the back vocal girls, they added so much to the overall sound and mood of the song, excellent choice. I just now checked the original album track, it feels like two different songs.
Yeah, the studio version of this one, oddly, doesn't sound as good to me. That hardly ever happens. I nearly always prefer studio recordings over live recordings!
Addendum. Another thing you said that was perceptive: The video editing of this movie was well thought out and skillfully done over the course of 4 concerts (I think that is what I read). Yes, there were shots of other members of the group but the focus was on Byrne even when he wasn't singing because he was carrying the show. I've seen some videos of Stevie Ray Vaughan where he's be doing something phenomenal on guitar but the camera was showing the drummer playing a simple beat.
Great review of a simply phenomenal performance by David Byrne and Talking Heads. Loved your discussion on the nuances of their ensemble playing an arrangement.
Hey John. You should check out Johnathon Demme's Robyn Hitchcock film. It's really just Robyn singing and playing guitar but he's such an interesting character it doesn't need much more.
You gotta give it to em for just reaching the limit of piercing. Knowing those geniuses, they had to be aiming for that yk? Man this is fr one of the best songs of all time
They are gonna be rereleasing this concert film in august of this year so I’d highly recommend going to see it because i will since it came out before i was born

You know the best thing about this analysis/review, seeing the pure unadulterated joy you're getting from a piece of music.
Tina's BASSLINES are ICONIC. ✌️
Tell me about it!❤
One of the GREATEST bands of all time. ✌️

Yes ! Hilarious , stylish and pure avant garde
Their rythm section is in the pocket.
Those extra deep suit pockets are a nice metaphor for the band 🤣
Bernie Worrell was so crucial to their sound.
And we have bingo! Seeing this group live, it was pretty apparent that the Bernie was driving the band from his synth.
If you watch closely, a lot of that is Jerry. He tends to do the solos.
I never thought I'd want to put the two words rock and masterpiece in the same sentence.
