With the amount of forward lean you have, you should move the foot bed forward one notch, and always put your pants in the heel clip to make sure every time you step in you get both clicks on your heel, because with one click they feel a little loose, but with both clicks they feel rock solid and crazy responsive (my own experience with photon boots, so it could be the boots)

Wanted to comment the same. These are some super responsive bindings, and I noticed as well he just went for 1 click - the second click gives you 0 play between boot and binding.

I agree. I actually rock a K2 excavator with Step Ons and it's crazy responsive and great for carving with full inclination. That second click down makes all the difference. (Also have photons). I crank the step on high backs up all the way, which also helps

Knapton had the same issue when he cranked the forward lean. Personally I like them better at a low F2 lean and footbed in the correct size position than F3 with footbed moved up one size.

I also don't experience any looseness with the 2 clics that I always go with. I have the photon boots and they also give the tension on the mid starp area with the boa. Would not ever go back to the traditional bindings, somehow i like the control way better with the step on and the way i would describe it that it feels much more skateboardy if that makes sense but i personally love it!

Love the step ons. Six seasons and by far the most responsive binding I’ve ever ridden. Instant response.
I’ve used photon, rulers, and ions.
Only way to get loose feel with any of those boots is to not snug up your boots.
Sounds like a boot issue u are having or maybe your high back lean isn’t letting u get the duel click. U are for sure having a issue.
The step ons are the opposite of your final response at the end. More responsive than a strap binding. For some they are too responsive. If you swing through summit this year we can look yours over compared to all my sets and get them dialed in and figure out what’s going on with yours. U can try my different boots too. (Same size).

I get what your saying but I feel like they are intended for the average level rider who is looking for connivance. I haven ridden union bindings most of my career( ride twinpig lib orca cabita D.O.A) I got a pair of step ons a couple years ago tried them on all my boards . I was riding the Addias Samba laced boots and had the same opinion as in the video having the board being connected to your boot ( connected on the sides ) instead of the strap which connects from the side and the top makes the step ons less stable. I got lasso pro boa boots and this fixed it a little bit. I got a lot of the responsiveness that you are talking about they are just limited do to how much they rely on the stiffness of your boot. They are also not great in anyone area park/ all mountain / free ride I feel like they are a good boot for an average rider trying to get around the mountain as easy as possible.

I'm a snowboard instructor who rocks the same set up as you (K2 Excavator + Burton Step ons - regular and genesis) and feel like Step ons actually help me get more performance out of that board than some of my other bindings. It sounds like something went wrong with your gear and that's why you lost performance. It's likely that your boot wasn't actually sized properly if it's moving around in your boot like that and/or not clicking in properly on the heel to really lock yourself into the board. Make sure you get that second click when you step into the binding. I find that the step ons shine with dynamic turning as the anchor points are closer to the board, enabling quicker tilt (with highback's up) and more torsional flex when turning dynamically. I'd say give them another shot and make sure you're booted in and clipped in properly.

  • @esvignettes7592

The reason you felt “loose” in the beginning is because you’re using a flexible boot. If you go up to the proton boot you’ll find the step ons are in fact more responsive than traditional bindings due to the stiffness of the boot directly influencing your board.

    • @dizgotti1355
      @dizgotti1355 Рік тому +9

      Another good point ☝️
Boot stiffness becomes a bigger factor but getting two clicks is key for the expected high responsive if the StepON setup.
I don't find looser boots notably less responsive though, they just hurt my feet if I ride too aggressively and the Boa can pop loose. I had the photons and they were too soft for my riding style. I rode the Ions for a couple years and now am on the DC Judge just for the overall comfort, despite being softer than the Ions.

Yes, I think this is the issue. I've noticed at 7:36-7:40 the extra movement of back leg boot in the binding. It should not be like that. This happens when the boot got only one click at the heel. The reasons cloud be: toe cushion is not set up properly; the pants were not fixed by the clip and stuck somewhere in-between; extra snow on the outsole; paying not enough attention for second click.

    • @MikeWiacek
      @MikeWiacek Рік тому +6

@@arvinstz you're referring to the clicking noise they'd make when making turns. That noise has been fixed in the latest gen. The clicking noise we're referring to is when you step on, the heel hook clicks into the highback connector at two different levels. The first click is secure but super loose, the second click locks you in with no wiggle room at all. Both are safe and secure, but the second click is like having your boot welded to the binding.

I crash, jump shit, ride fakie in all conditions and often with plenty of fresh snow. I like responsive boot/binding set ups. If you get this system proper boot fit is key. Dual BOA, upgrade the foot bed and they are nice and responsive. I don’t even use the models with an ankle strap. Burton, DC and Nitro now all make boots for them. Manage the snow in your binding just like you would strap bindings. I’ll never go back and honestly can’t believe it’s taken this long. Most people don’t even ride hard or fast enough to push any limit these “ might “ have including this reviewer. I also love getting fresh lines while Skiers and Snowboarders strap in and adjust their buckles n stuff…Keep strapping in “ Tiger “.

    I love my Step Ons!!
Having said that, I'm also a 40 year old rider who learned to board about 7 years ago. I also only ride groomers and between some trees. My husband is a skier, so having the ease of just clicking in and going is really nice.
I do understand the "loose" feeling, but I suppose I am used to it now.
I'd say for the casual boarder, Step Ons are perfect! For the rider who wants to hit the park and more technical terrain, traditional bindings might be better.

I don't know if you are going to read this but I highly recommend getting Burton Photon Boots or higher model with ankle strap which will solve your majority of the issues as the ankle strap can actually control how controlled you want your riding and stiffness of the boots to be with the ankle tension and FLEX. because in my opinion you are an advanced plus rider and is using the softest boot in the line with no ankle tension means 50% control on your skills set.
But the binding itself is way more stiffer and responsive then strap bindings as once you are clicked in the front clips there is no space between the boot and base plate and also are connected with solid material which is nylon composite clips rather then normal straps which are rubber
NOTE = it is a real struggle to get a second click even after jumping on the edge it takes 2 tries at least haha

I’ve had Step Ons 4 years now and there amazing. I have 3 sets and two sets of boots. I definitely don’t have a “loose” feeling or that there’s a space between the boot and binding. When I first used step ons the feeling was INSTANT RESPONSE. INSTANT CARVE IMMEDIATE RESPONSE EDGE TO EDGE. My board felt like and entirely new board I felt glued to the board in a way I never felt with bindings. What changes the feelings with step ons is the boot. Where in the past different bindings had different feels with step ons it’s all about the boot. Some are soft like swaths which give you the playful surfy feeling and some like the ions are super stiff. You want to make sure your boots are tight since it’s all about the boot. If it feels loose it’s not the binding it’s the boot crank that sucker down or maybe you have a soft boot or possibly you weren’t on the second click on the binding. There’s two clicks one playful the second your more locked in. The only negative to step ons I sometimes feel too glued specifically when I’m trying to butter and it throws my buttering off. Other then that I love them. I think regular bindings had a looser feel. So far everyone I know that got ‘em hasn’t gone back. I’ve considered a set of regular bindings for park but other than the park I can’t imagine why someone would want regular bings compared to the step ons. Convenience is king.

ALWAYS do a little bunny hop before starting your run to make sure your heel is fully locked in. That's a habit I've developed to make sure I get a consistent ride. Also, I believe the kendo boot is on the softer flex side of the step on boot range. That's likely playing into your loose feeling. The ankle articulates, and I think that's causing instability. I have tried the photons and they feel very secure, especially with the strap over the ankle. I currently use the DC control step on boots and they are very stiff, although the BOA system doesn't seem to hold consistent tension and I find myself having to readjust them after every few runs to keep them tight.

I wear 9-9.5 but my boots are 10. No toe discomfort ;-) Also, one thing that does throw me off time to time is the lack of ankle strap (I have the Ritual which does not have the strap on the boots) which you don't have either so it will feel drastically different. It does feel like my foot is going to come off hahaha. Lack of the ankle strap is compensated by more responsiveness of the foot movement and I see how you feel like your foot is doing more work and although I never really thought of it that way, you're probably right! I do have to reiterate what other folks are saying about the second click. Between your forward lean and also stepping on the deep POW, you're probably not getting the second click in, which makes it feel looser. Overall as an intermediate snowboarder and an older one who hates the whole process of strapping in, I LOVE my StepOns. After a few years on StepOns, though, (and understanding the limitations of StepOns a bit better now) I do have my eyes set on the Supermatics. Feel like it would be the best of both worlds! I have both step ons and regular ladder bindings. I will say that there is still a little bit more play in the connection than the ladder bindings but I actually think it’s worth it. Here’s the things I would recommend to get the best step on experience.
    1. First of all I would not recommend lace up boots EVER with step ons because you want the front of your boot to be tight and sturdy because there is no strap there. BOA all day with step ons. Burton makes double BOA boots that come in two different levels of sturdiness to mitigate that no strap feeling.
    2. There are three attachment points per boot so you just listen for each click and wiggle around after you step on to make sure you’re in. You don’t really have to question if you’re in because you can see the front two connections and as long as you feel and hear the heel side connection you should be in.
    3. I would not recommend step on bindings for deep powder days where you intend to ride only powder. They are step on bindings after all and if you don’t have a solid surface to step on when you put them on it kind of defeats the point and they are maybe even less convenient than ladder straps.
    4. There are a few different tiers of Burton step on bindings and the higher you get the lighter the binding will be and the better the cushioning will be. The step on bindings are not nearly as cushiony as my ladder strap bindings so I would recommend buying the higher tier boots and maybe even wearing some more padded socks since you’re talking about your feet hurting.
    5. Take the time to adjust every little thing with your boots and bindings to make sure they work before you take them out on the mountain so you don’t have a bad day. The foot bed is adjustable as well as a few other things about the set up such as the perfect boot size and making sure it matches with the binding size.
They are a relatively complicated thing to get perfectly set up but I think once you get the perfect set up they work really well. Overall I think they’re good and I think that in the future of snowboarding there will be a more perfect way to connect to the board than having to sit there and strap yourself up while your skier friends wait on you.

I think you would have a different experience with the Photons or Ions. While at lace up is nice, it probably is a bit too soft for a step on binding. You should have increased response with the step on’s, some would say too much. The only flex I get is in the base plate with the Photon’s. Definitely make sure that you’re getting the second click as others have mentioned, or it feels really wobbly and unstable.

I had a great experience with step ons which is why I bought a pair, but I really think stiffer boots are better with step ons. Like photons or ions. I got some new ions that I'm going to try out in a few days. I hear that the strap across the boot works wonders and adds additional stiffness in front of your ankle that you would typically get from a strap binding. @@Davidsworldtravels I don't think you'll have "problems", but if you gravitate towards stiffer boots and more control based on your riding style then I would go for ions or photons where they added an ankle piece to the boot that specifically address additional stiffness on the toe side.
However in general I think most people will be fine as long as they get properly fitted/sized boot. If you're used to wearing loose boots and then expect to get extra tightness from ratcheting down straps then you'll definitely have problems.

If you want that locked in responsive feel. Go to the Burton ion. Or the very least go to the Burton photon. Both of them have an actual ankle strap that goes over the boot that you can tighten down same as you would another strap. And both have boa lacing systems which you can tighten down way tighter than you ever can with your hands and laces. I'm surprised that your review is saying these aren't responsive. In my opinion the Step on system is extremely responsive and most people's review say the same. I ride the Burton photon boots and they're as responsive as I'd ever want them to be.
