- In today’s video, I test the Burton step on‘s to see how they perform it while carving and riding park. This is a different style video with me being mic’d up and you get the first-hand commentary as I ride.
This video is sponsored by Burton but I’m giving you my honest opinion of these binding.

Have them for 3 years now. Great bindings, very responsive and easy step in and out. I love them. I love high speed carving and these bindings are great for that.
Love my step ons. Been rocking them for the past 2 seasons with about 150 days on them. Never fallen out, no issues and love the responsiveness. The ease of stepping in and out is just a perk! I get that they aren’t for everyone, but once you have a few days with them and get the hang of it, it’s hands down LIFE CHANGING. Love the content doooood!
Do you ever feel like your ankles are a bit loose?
@@CarlosHernandez-gc6no no I don’t. My first set of boots I had the swath and switched to the photon this year with the ankle strap. A little stiffer boot but love them so far. 11 days on the new setup this year and loving it
I rented a set last season after my bindings broke, then I bought a set for this season. Besides the ease of getting in and out of them. I love the simplicity, the weight, and how much easier it is to pack my board.
I love mine too
Probably it’s the best review of Burton Step On I have ever watched! Thanks bro!
I love my step ons. To each their own I say, but that’s the whole point. To find what you like and what works for you. Thanks for the honest review and great content!
Keep it up Tommie! You're the best instructional channel I've seen on UA-cam by far and I like that you're making reviews as well. Best of luck on keeping this channel on the up and up!
Just got the Step Ons and have 3 days on 'em so far.
I like 'em a lot! Setting forward to lean to max makes
'em a bit harder to step into and of course when you
are turning to the toe side as you get off the lift it is
very difficult to step in. Other than that, I have found
them to be even more comfortable than my "traditional"
bindings.
By the way, you make riding those rails look way too
easy..... keep yourself safe! 😃👍❤🏂

I'm 48 years old. This year is my second season of snowboarding. I'm a beginner, thanks to Tommie's video's that help me a lot with my ability. I just got my first set this year. Finally, never rent again. I have my new K2 board and my Burton Step-On bindings with DC boots. For my age, the ease of stepping in and out is just incredible. No more back pain and wet pants.
Sickkk love k2 boards I now use my dad's ambush that is older then me (I'm 16) and he just got the alchemist, the ambush still feels brand new and it has been rode hard. Definitely k2 boards are some of the best out there.
Wait, you can use other brand boots with Burton bindings?
@@menlopark4966 Yes.
Step-On DC boots
Love my step ons will never go back to straps. Great video/review Tommie as usual!
Best review I've seen of the STEP ONS! Great work.. :)
i just tried them for the first time riding at mammoth and i'm in love. !!
Glad to see you giving them another review! My trick to stepping out is heel up/knee forward to get out of the rear cleat, then turning my whole leg 45 degrees outward, super easy and never fails.
This is 100% recommended, never fails. You can also swap the release levers to the insides if that is for you. I’ve tried both and they both are acceptable.
I just wish the move was inward, it's easier on the knee and more intuitive
@@fudhater8592 now that you mention it I thought he meant toes outward because that’s actually what I do heel up heel inward toes outward.
@@Dwooten206 Yes, that's the way they are designed, I wish it were reversed
Im always impressed with your riding style. You killed it!!! I was thinking about the Burton step in's but i think im gonna go with the cartel's as well. I bought the 24 custom 166w and the cartel's would be perfect for it.
I got those in light grey color, someone crashed into me this weekend, and it looked like they got scratched, later on after clean up I realized that its their paint and binding was not damaged at all, amazing durability.
Just arrived from a week of snowboarding in French alps with burton step on and a new batalleon Goliath board have amazing time the step one we’re great only once my board came off in the chair lift but was my fault for not making sure click twice at the back . Amazing product game changer and the board was amazing can’t wait for return in March next year again
I just picked up exactly the same setup as yours ;) I will test in February ;)
Don't take this wrong.... Your like a ballerina on that board...Your riding is beautiful man
I work at a ski hill and have to unbind many times going down the mountain to do my job. I actually think no-one uses these bindings more than me, like no-one. It's become so simple to me, there is not really any difference in performance worth mentioning besides the fact it's easier to get in and out of them. The only thing i find a performance enhancer would be that when you strap in, sometimes you do it tighter, sometimes looser so step ons win being a more consistent feel.
Two things Tommie that I would love your feedback on with regards to the step ons:
First; can you do some butter tricks to see how they compare with traditional bindings. Is there enough play in them to allow you to do butters just as good as with regular bindings.
Two; I think a good test for feeling secure might have been some gnarly mogul riding as that might have flexed the bindings torsionally a lot more.
I will add that I rock the step ons specifically because I don’t like the feeling of straps. I don’t like having to feel like I have to crank down my straps to feel secure whereas with the step ons I always feel secure and I can keep my boots feeling comfortable without having to overnighted them in order to get good response.
The only riders that hate on step on are the ones that have never tried them. They are a game changer for real.
Bought the step on’s last year with DC boots and absolutely love them!
Glad to see someone bomb the park and really push the bindings hard cause I was a bit nervous! Great review
Yo Tommie! Do you have any videos on binding adjustments such as forward lean and highback rotation?
I love the Step Ons, been riding for 2 yrs now, im 47 and not trying to be a pro lol, if your feet fit well into Burton or DC boots you'll love them
Great Video! Looking forward to buy my first Step on's for next season!
Which board you ride?
I’m on the same page as you. Tightening my straps down really snug seems to give me more confidence as well. It would drive me crazy not being able to do that.
Really tempted to make the transition over but I'm loving my Rome Black Labels rn
From my personal experience, these boots take 3-4 days of riding to get them broken into and they do get really comfortable. The bindings are responsive and convenient. May not be for olympic riders, but definitely for everyone else.
I'd get them for free riding, wouldn't get them for the park.
@@bukchoiii why
@@brianrivas2245 different flex pattern, too responsive and wouldn't allow room for error.
Thanks for the review.
Question: which burton step ons these are. Watched the whole video tryna figure it out. reg re:flex or the x re:flex?
Great riding, great filming, and really like the format with the mic and gear discussion while riding, nice work! Did you try maxing out the forward lean on them or are they limited to matching the forward lean angle of the boots they are paired with? Curious to hear how the forward lean adjustments work with this system.
Afaik, these don't have forward lean adjustments
@@tommiebennett agree. Too much forward lean ruins the toe side. I have to excessively bend my knees to get edge engaged.
@@KirillKonshin forward lean adjustment is located on the inside of the high back, 2 phillips screws on both sides of the inside.
@@KirillKonshin They do, there are 2 screws in the highback
Tommie is so good on that board. Super smooth
If you do any sort of work on the snow, these are a huge hassle saver. I've got a pair that I think were fresh in the 18-19 season so they've still got that older, super responsive design, and that responsiveness has grown on me a lot.
I’m switching to step ons this year.
What you said about the mental confidence of tightening those straps is why we won’t see pros rocking step ons for a while. I can relate to tightening down my bindings before a big line or no fall zone.
Curious to see if I still do this on a splitboard after getting out of the habit of that on a solid board.
The single gripe I have with them is that if you want /all the forward lean/ they get tough to step into.
If it helps, I have the x full forward on an all mountain and the the regular flex full back on a park board, and I see no difference getting in or out
Have you ever run into an issue with taking them out/in , when you need to help someone that fell midway through the trail/slope?
I’m afraid it would be hard to step on after I helped a friend or someone that had trouble. The steep of blue or black, there’s not a flat spot to put them back on?
I’m a big fan of the malavita bindings. I don’t care for that Burton stopped putting the upgraded straps on the cartels. The malavitas are so smooth and comfortable.
Tommie, Have you ever tried the Clew bindings? If so, how do they compare(
Hey Tommie! Can you please tru the Burton show stopper?
I was going to switch over, but mine had heel lift/play. Sticking to traditional until they sort out the quality control
Do you mean when doing toe side, it feels loosen up on the heel lock? I heard someone talk about that.
@@bosco2814 Yep, the heel was not fully locked in...even after 2 clicks
Are those footbeds thicker than strap bindings? It looks like you're higher over the board. Or am I just seeing things?
Awesome review, I've been in my C60's for the past 15 years and the plastic finally decided to disintegrate this season, so I took the next "step" 😂 and picked up a set of Step-On bindings this year. It took a few runs to gain the confidence they were secure and I wasn't going to fall out of them. I just love the fact I don't have to cinch that strap down anymore to feel secure. Hopefully these will last another... 15 years or so?
What size board is he and how tall? I’m trying to figure out my size for a board if I wanna do more tricks, btw I’m 6ft tall
so ive been snowboarding twice and so far ive been able to get the hang of most basics like riding toe edge, heel edge, even doing some ollies and some 180s but the thing i cant figure out is how to do you make it easier to ride switch? im left foot forward and i can only go a few feet going very slow riding switch so i was wondering if theres anything i can do that will help that. also whats an easier way to ride on icyer snow?
IMO, you need relax and just get experience. Figure out carving and riding blues and blacks proficiently then worry about tricks and switch.
@@ljshoreslokal wont it be easier to just learn switch from the start?
i stopped using my step-ons because they felt too responsive/nervous. Would you say they made the changes to the boots or bindings or both?
Burton came out with a softer version of the Photon so there's a little more play
New for this year are three different levels of stiffness for the bindings. The softest is probably comparable to normal bindings (based off of reviews I’ve seen).
Just return from a week of snowboarding new photon soft boots and basic model binding were perfect 👌
Definitely staying with the Cartels for now. It really does not take that long to strap in and I feel the extra security is worth it. My worst wrecks on a board have been due to binding failures. First the back heel plate simply snapped, then cut my calf pretty badly as I tumbled, the other the toe strap broke and I caught an edge, was able to recover but not avoid the tree that suddenly appeared and was impaled by a branch.
I buy new bindings every 3 years now even if they seem ok but in those wrecks, my foot stayed partly secured even when a part of the binding completely failed. Not sure what would happen to the strap-ons if a connection completely failed.
I dislocated my knee cap when my board went on one side of a tree and my body around the other pivoting around the 6"tree on the front binding. The bindings didn't budge. Still rocking them.
If you want a softer boot they make the swath and the kenda. The kenda is even a lace up boot.
I love the swaths! Super comfortable and just the right stiffness for me.
Did u mention what board did u get to try out.
My dude. Which specific bindings were you on and which boots were you using?
Did you try forward lean on these yet? I think it makes it harder to snap in
i have full forward lean, it does make it slightly harder but it's not too bad
You get Burton step on the most hyped binding out there. Jonathan buckhouse gets Clew 😂 you do the maths.
Boot durability is a major issue with this year's Burton lineup. I have a pair of photon step on from early Dec used less than 14 days and the flex is totally gone plus the liner pack out like it's been on 100 days. Going down steep lines gives me no confidence so I use them for simple beginner lessons and some small park jumps. Step on boots gets wore out much quicker than regular boots since all the support is in the boots and no straps to alleviate any pressure. At this rate I need to buy 2 pair of step on boots every season as oppose to keep one pair of regular boots for two season. Other boot brands that does step on may do a better job in terms of longevity.
Those are the boots I was looking at. That sucks
What’s boots you use?
Got to hand it to the dude that is recording you while boarding. Didn't skip a beat.
What boots were you wearing?
Hows the heel lift..?
Step ons, second season w/ them:
- Pinky toe gets numb
- Not enough high-back
- Harder to butter
- Not comfortable overall to ride toe side imo
I will switch back to traditional bindings
Did I missed it? Where did you talk about carving performance?
You drive a GTI too Tommy? Or is that the homies whip lol
Can you do one on the flow NX2’s as a more universal step in that don’t require proprietary boots to go along with them? Full disclosure, I’m brand new, have gone snowboarding 3 times now, and bought these as my first bindings because I figured it’d be way more efficient than standard bindings, and I can never figure out how to get in them in a way that actually speeds up the process lol
I’ve had step-ons for two seasons now. They work well and the “drawbacks” are hardly noticeable at all unless you’re super picky. If you get the right boot set-up, they should be spot on.I hear a lot of “experts” or whatever smack talking them, but as someone who’s been riding normal bindings since ‘92, I can say that this set up functions well. As you stated, doing a lot of freestyle may require a softer boot or break-in. If you want optimal tweakability, step-on may not the best since the system locks at the heel pretty firmly which will limit side to side bending of the boot more than strap bindings. Sooner or later, they may perfect a version for park use.
Many reviewer say good things about the step on. But non will actually use them as their daily equipment. I had a set 3years ago when it first came out. Sold it after 2 months and back to the traditional straps. For people who want engagement and customization on their binding won’t like step on.
Buy Step Ons and start landing 9s
Tommy, you’re great, but if this video is sponsored by Burton (which seemed to be the case when you’re pushing their loyalty program?) then be very clear. Let us viewers know. If you’re not sponsored then also tell us. We need to be able to trust you’re unbiased.
@@tommiebennettThanks for clarifying. And, most importantly, thanks for pushing out great content.
This is a good review of a great product. I have ridden these since their debut. I'm not sponsored and not overly loyal to any corporation or branding. No bias here.
They aren't quite like strapped in. As Tommie stated they're a little stiffer and extremely responsive. I have the photon boots with dual boa. They do break in after use and the dual boa is very adjustable. I had the first year ones, and now the second year ones as there were a few tweaks to make the boa hardware longer lasting and more durable. I have 2 sets of the bindings as well so I can have 2 sticks handy. I'm 5'10" 180 and I ride a 2016 Burton mystery flying v 158, also a Lib Tech dark knife 164 wide for deep fluffies. The ease of access saved my life upsidedown in a rock well just this year. I'm always waiting for someone to strap in since it is so quick to step on and ride away. They stay put and are worthy of hard riding and hard landings. Kids joke at it here and there but get more genuinely inquisitive once they ride my line. I recommend trying them at least.
I mean, he did thank Burton for supplying everything in the video and did the same in the description. The video also notated it's a paid promotion during the part you're talking about.
@@Stew900 I'm 45 , haven't snowboarded in 25 years and want to get back into it- I just bought the process flying V, still haven't got boots and bindings- u recommend stepons or traditional? any tips or recommendations would be appreciated
Thanks
@@dsd-downshiftdave8056 get the step ons. I’ve had them for 3 seasons and I have no regrets. I love the ease and responsiveness. Don’t have to sit my ass down or bend down to strap up. They’ve never came loose or off. I do a lot of snowboarding on the east coast where it’s often icy. I took them out west a few times on POW days with no issue. To each their own but I like the ease. I have back problems as well
Would you be willing to give these away if they’re in medium? I already have a pair but I have a buddy that could really use these
Would you be willing to get a job?
@@NVRLNDN I have a good job. To reiterate I ALREADY have my own pair. I was simply trying to help someone who can’t afford it.
@@themaven1276 Doubtful
I did 76/83 straight days in Austria. These things are pretty junk. Both hammocks came off (they're held on by a single pop rivet and two plastic teeth),. The toe clips (rear) wore down becoming less reliable for entry and ultimately releasing during riding. The gas pedal (under foot) falls off because it's only retained by little plastic teeth. Happened 2x to me and I found someone else's on the mountain... The Photon boots fell apart completely across both toe boxes. This is because they stiffened the whole boot and then relied on unreinforced double stitching at the toe seam.
If you carve and want more than 40-5 days forget these. If you are true beginner and want maybe 4-5 seasons doing only a week or two each season then yeah these are good. As long as you have the balance to take advantage of the entry system... And never progress your riding...
so much money 😞
