- I spent several days deconstructing and rebuilding the corner cabinet in my rig including removing both the heater and A/C units. The new space is amazing and there are so many possibilities now!

My name is David and with my dog Lefty we live full time in our converted ambulance RV. I made this change to my 'standard' life and you can too! Like, subscribe and comment - Lefty would appreciate it - he wants the adventures to keep coming!
The Campulance is a 2002 Ford E450 Marque Commando 164 Class III ambulance powered by the Ford 7.3l Powerstroke diesel engine and a 4 speed transmission. Lefty is a 65lb Staffordshire Terrier (best I can tell) that came from the Verona Street Animal Shelter in March 2014 at the age of 9 months. We have been living full time in the campulance since July 2019.
Your daughter is so helpful what a blessing!! She definitely loves her Dad.
What a great moment you had with that delivery woman who is a fan of yours! :)
She was so great!
Cool changes... Looking forward to this project completion. Also... I'm LOVING the outtakes/bloopers. 😀
Golden opportunity for a full bathroom with a shower.
I agree! Ginger and Greg built an indoor shower for their ambulance that, in my opinion, is perfect for ambulance conversions. You won't know it's a shower until they close the curtains. (Driven to Adventures)
I get a kick out of watching these two channels and their builds. I need to get back on my big bus project so I can meet up with everyone and share in the adventures. Again David! If you ever pass through North Central Texas let me know. Plan on hanging out here. I'm used to working on projects with limited funds.
Good catch! Yeah, that would be wonderful there.
Came here to say the exact same thing..this is the exact same spot im putting mine
I love it the UPS lady follows you.
Right!! What a surprise!
That was so cool! She was so sweet! 😊
Wonder if someday she uses her UPS truck for a camper.
Her and her boyfriend have an ambulance 🚑. It looked awesome in the pic she showed me :)
So sweet she knows who you are
Subscribed on my 2nd channel to try to push you two over 12k... so close!
I’m glad you got to meet a fan!! Get used to it because you guys have fans all over. ❤️ from AZ
First time watching this one, we really like your show! We love Lefty too!💕 Keep the videos coming! 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍 Gods Blessings to you and Lefty!😁😁😁😁
What a great transformation David 👍 I'm also planning to remove that similar AC/Heater cabinet from my ambulance and install a step down shower pan like: "TU500 36"x24"x13" that will fit perfectly in my space. The lowe part of the shower tub will pass thru the floor in to the lower compartment where the batteries used to be. That will create a standing height in the shower of 6.5 feet. I can store an emergency porta potty in there as well as a clothes hanging rod when shower is not in use.
My ambo is based on the F-350 and a bit different layout.
Thank you! That's a great project you've got planned!
David, With All You Get Gifted To Ya, Gift The Heater To Someone Who Can Use It. The Rewards Are Priceless.
I would think a small bathroom would be a huge plus. No more setting up a tent for a shower, a good toilet for sure.
I’m going to take a pic and rock out my new Campulance hat!! I Love it! Thank you 🤗
Yea!!! I'm glad you like it!!
You always do such a neat and clean job, even the things that won't be seen good job !! WOW what a large space. Too funny having to spell park LOL You knocking on 12k door AWESOME!!!!!
Lefty can spell now!!! Thanks Wattsa!
@@TheCampulanceMan LOL. My Chihuahua's knew bye bye/ bath & vet. The later two words spoken aloud would start the game of hide & seek
Steel wool stuffed in any opening like vents and around hoses . Everywhere also helps
If you would have fallen in the creek rather than the rig only your pride would have been injured.
You have disparaged you carpentry skills. Looks like you didn't give yourself enough credit. Beautiful job. With your beautiful daughter and good boy.
Oh my gosh ups young lady so cute! That's great you caught that. First time you were recognized?
I've had 2 other guys stop by that live in the area here to say hi!
Good job. If I ever get done rebuilding my built in generator I'll start on the inside. That area is where I plan on a shower.
Great job on taking out the walls David it will give you so much more space and open up the area and it's starting to look more like your home than just the ambulance🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
It made a huge difference!! Thank you :)
You really should get a discord server set up where people can ask you questions and all. Great job man as usual
As always a really smart finish. You take such care and it shows.
Thank you :)
Lol your comment that the water was super wet was funny, water is always wet , I know you were talking about the area being wet lol but it sounded funny
Thanks for posting another informative video. Well done Lefty on the supervision!
Safe travels
Thank you 😊
The campulance keeps evolving. Like the change to the space. Another job well done. The ups driver recognizing you and the campulance was great.
Thank you!
Awesome job on that cabinet work! I second the thought about a bathroom, toilet and shower..perfect spot! keep up the great work on your rig!
Maybe some day... I think I'll always be changing things :)
You could put that underneath the rig for extra cooling
You could always build a shelve above your new fridge that would be at the right height so the fridge door can lift up and the freezer can be placed above it and secured? Depending on which is bigger that one could maybe be put on top so you can have a brace going from the floor to the bottom of the shelf on the corner that is not by any wall? Can't wait to see your video with the fridge?
Great idea - that's one of my sketches!!
I guess I missed your plan for heat and AC going forward. Mini Split? Too bad the existing system didn't workout for you. Nice to have something that works off the engine when driving and in reserve. That articulating daughter tool holding unit with voice command sure is handy to have around. You folks take care...
I have the diesel air heater and an A/C unit installed that keep us comfortable :)
Good job David, way to spend minimum money on that project. Really appreciate the tutorial on the isolation if the heater bypass/AC components.
Thank you. Disconnecting them held me from doing this... but it was simple it turned out :)
Great work David. 👍👍👍
Always exciting when I got the notification of your new video. Your ambulance gets better and better. I was watching a few videos of a guy repairing the badly rusted cab floor. I hope your cab floor is ok. I love the UPS lady. I think she would've hugged you if not for this damn COVID thing.
Thanks Ted - my cab is in perfect condition thankfully. When I had the carpet out the floors are still painted!
@@TheCampulanceMan Wonderful!!!!!
Good job! The upright was my thoughts exactly
It would be perfect right!
“OCD” in your case stands for, “Outstanding Campulance Development.”
You are too kind!!!
Wow! David looks great... when I finally find my ambulance. I would love to hire you to help me with the renovations. Or even consulting. It's just a thought. I know you're busy with your stuff. Lol, There's always something to do. Blessings always
Thanks Elaine - if you're on the road we can cross paths for sure:)
Another great video!
That's gonna look so nice! Can't wait to see it all done and you guys out on the road again living the good life! When is Daylyn gonna get her rig so you can get her doing all this stuff also? Hey Lefty, found any good slippers lately? The new stuff you put in that open space is gonna be of great use for you!
Great job!
Good work !
professional job. great work!
Very good job, beautiful result
Thank you!
That open area looks great. Looking forward to your new fridge video! Dalynn and Lefty are so adorable😍
Thank you Kim
Good job.
Things are looking great....t
Wow..... great job........looks fantastic
Oh thank you!
You hook that heater box up to an on-demand heater with recirculating water you probably have a real nice heating unit
That's a good idea Tom... :)
Great work!
Thank you!
Great job!!!
Thanks Dorothy :)
Looks great
Thanks Don :)
Great video looks awesome
Thank you!
For anyone else doing this, take off the inside engine cover (aka Dog House) and you will see the heater hoses right at the rear of driver side cylinder head. You can do the bypass there.
But IDK why people remove rear ac&heat units on ambos and schoolies. Always good to have a back up or be able to cool/heat the rear while driving. To each there own. 🤙
Good tip thank you. I have engine service coming up and I'll give it a look.
The ac compressor and condenser are designed to be running the front and rear systems. Removing the back half of it may have an effect on the compressor and condensor.
@@johnm2056 thanks John - if you watch a later video I did, I show how I fully disconnected the rear system from the front- I wasn't comfortable just having the lines capped off - like you mentioned, it's not good for the compressor, etc.
@@TheCampulanceMan it wouldn't hurt anything if you didn't fully disconnect it. The front ac can be run all day w/o turning on rear ac. But if you're not ever going to use it ya take it out. Probably shaved 30lbs.
@@TheCampulanceMan I did find that video :) you do awesome work. The videos are great love seeing the travels the adventures. Always looking forward to the next one.
Safe travels
Looks good David 👍
Thanks brother
I always enjoy your videos.
Thanks Rusty :)
For the question of what to put in the new area? 🧐 My vote is for a toilet shower area?🤗👍
Looks like hard work
It was a big job!!
Nice job
Thanks Brian
I owned an ambulance once. They are very well built for their purpose, you're doing a great job of repurposing and reusing material as best you can. They are really well built so I understand what you are going through. Mine was a van type and was rusting away as Fords do.
Thanks John I appreciate that :)
Oh my goodness the truck has come so far. I’ve taken a screen break from phone as summer kicks off and schedules changed. Now that we have settled into summer routine I’m looking forward to catching up on your videos. Great job on your successful next phase of truck build. Things are looking fantastic. And Lefty as handsome as always. He is a great supervisor. Lefty 💜
Thanks for watching Lisa- enjoy your summer :))
Hi David and Lefty🖐🏻 Another great video 👍🏻 thanks
Thank you Linda !!!
Been looking forward to seeing you remove the cabinet opens up a lot of space for you can't wait to see it the refrigerator and shelves in place
Thanks Joe! Stayed tuned :)
Good job 👏🏻 😎🐶🚑
Thank you Michelle :)
Looking great!! Yeah, that's a big job especially in this heat!! Love the vinyl wall covering you used, we're gonna eventually do something similar.
And on the heater core/AC lines, I have yet to crawl under our rig to look for the antifreeze supply/return lines. That's coming! We're currently tag teaming on the bed solution construction and the solar outfitting, but taking our rig on a little trip this weekend. :)
Thanks Pat! Isn't the work a blast!! Have fun with it :)
Great Job! I finally got caught up from day 1! Do you know of any taller owners? I am 6'-7" and not sure if my height would be a hindrance with an ambulance. I'm not sure if I could use the pass thru or not, so was thinking the F series may be better, I don't recall you moving from drivers seat thru it in any of your videos. Thanks for all the great content!
I thought a shower too!
Great video. Been wondering how to disconnect those transmission fluid lines on my own rig. Enjoy the new space!
Thanks Andrew
Your new space looks fabulous! It was a lot of work, but, the end results must give you a lot of satisfaction as well. I laughed so hard at the end of the video when you are taking the puppies to the P-A-R-K….you have to spell it out!😂😂 Sometimes you have to do that around kids too….
But Lefty has learned what P A R K spells... I might as well say it now :) Thank you Terri
just removed the AC in my ambulance today, tomorrow the ceiling fan goes in
Excellent!!! Oh the FUN!!
@@TheCampulanceMan what did you do to cap the emergency lights
The exterior red and yellow? I covered them with pieces of ABS that I painted. There's an older video on it :)
@@TheCampulanceMan I removed the lights and patched the cutouts from inside with fiber gloss and perforated aluminum from inside and sand and bondo from outside...no one knows there were lights there 👍
On the AC unit that you took out wrap the ends with aluminum foil and then duct tape
I will, what does that do for it? Thanks Tom
I think the tech term (Campulance parlance) is shitton. You gained a shitton of space by removing that cabinet, David. I really like how bright the space is with the light flooring on it, and it pulls together between the driving space & home. Well done!!! Much more work than expected though. You're gutsy- using shut off valves & removing filled lines! Not sure if I'm that rough & tumble my friend! Hahaha
I know that term!!! I try not to use technical terms though :)) Thanks David :)
David u r so neat and tidy with everything when u r working i like that im neat n everything also how's lefty tell him hello from the bluegrass state
Thank you Melody.. yes, I'm one of those neat freaks!
Boop! Great job! Thanks for sharing these priceless contents! Need a walk-in refrigerator! Lol jk... Cheers!
Super boop! Saving my pennies for one :)
I'm searching the one year videos to find out (#1) what happened to Leftys paw and (#2) to see the reinstall on the solar panels that took a flying leap into the road.
Thanks for the helpful info as always, unfortunately my AC lines dont have a cutoff valve so im gonna have to find a way to delete them from the engine bay😑😑 wish me luck
Watch my follow up video about rear AC delete - I did it under the hood and returned it to cab only system.
@@TheCampulanceMan nice, i ended up figuring it out but ill check it out anyways!
We are questioning the AC removal on this end. Lol. Nice remodel however. No job is absent of $%%’s. Unless you’re a saint 👼🏻
Thank you!
looks like you have a regular AC plug there so just get a regular small regular fridge/freezer that runs on 120 volts. That's what the Bussy McBusFace couple did when there 12 volt fridge/freezer died in their school bus. Much cheaper too. Check their channel out for that video.
link to that video so you won't have to search for it.
ua-cam.com/video/BE_qnxEAFYU/v-deo.html
That is an option but requires that the inverter runs 24 hours a day. Not a good use for power and would run my batteries down unfortunately.
Puppy kisses - I'm jealous - my dog is what I call "cheap with her kisses" and by that I mean she won't give me any - a friend of mine is the only person she willingly gives kisses to.
Great job, but to be honest I'm still in shock. It is a huge area but I was thinking you will probably have to put a shelf or two back in that space. When you said you would like to put a standup refrig/freezer in that area, I thought you were going to say it would be a nice place for a stand up indoor shower, minus the electric outlet.
Hi Scott - I only know I need to have the new fridge and my clothes stored... but I know I'll be changing it at some point. It's such a great big area!!
What's the Old Cabinet Door being used as?
Suggestions:
1).Tool Storage (Screwdrivers, Hammers Wrenches, Etc.).
2).Access to a Fold-Down Table.
Craig! Thank you - a fold out table is a great idea!
I was wondering the same thing that Craig asked about. When you now open the cabinet door on the outside, how much space is there between the diamond plate of the inside of the cabinet door and the back of the new wall? A drop-down or fold-out table might be the only thing that will now fit behind that exterior door, but I agree with you and Craig; that could be a great use for that little space.
@@timweidner1406 I just tested it this morning- there's barely enough room for a 1/4" piece of plywood with piano hinge attached (I just happened to have the doors I removed from the cabinet deconstruction). A piece of sheet aluminum would be better and not require squishing the door closed. :)
@@TheCampulanceMan A sheet of aluminum would make a perfect drop-down table solution! I'll bet you have some sheets of aluminum lying around from other ambulance deconstruction projects, like I do! :-)
@@TheCampulanceMan If you remove or cut the interior plate of the door, that might make some extra depth for a table? Maybe around 1 inch?
Nice, but why didn't you show when you open the door on the outside?
The outside cabinet?
Good stuff! You follow Marc Maron podcast?
I haven't heard of that one, no.
Don't know if you mentioned it and I missed it, but what, if anything, did you do with the exterior door to the refrigerator space?
It's blocked off with the wood wall and the door is locked closed.
Uprights aren't nearly as efficient as they dump all the cold out every time you open the door. Chests are less convenient but don't dump the cold.
Interesting, I hadn't heard that. Thank you :)
did some digging for an hour:
3 cu. ft. $699-truckfridge(dot)com/collections/12v-refrigerator-models/products/tf78-12v-truck-refrigerator-freezer-for-semi-trucks
4.6 cu. ft. $799-truckfridge(dot)com/collections/12v-refrigerator-models/products/custom-semi-truck-refrigerator
both uprights, even has average power draw on the page. may not be what you want, but at least you have some more options.
I'm considering converting an ambulance and I'd like to know why people demo the rear AC instead of using it?
You have to have the truck running to use it. That's not a good option for relaxing in your rig.
i have good a/c in the front but its not so good in the bake it looks like their is a cap to refill it with refrigerant but i haven't tried i cant find any info on it on line
The fill cap is under the hood and should be easily accessible. Is it a Ford?
@@TheCampulanceManthanks forthe reply yes Ford will that cap under the hood fill both the bake and the front a/c

Aren't those Iceco units around $700-800? Maybe you could get an upright, return or cancel the Iceco and sell the old one.
The company gifted it to him. He didn't buy it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
That's correct. It was a freebie :)
Yes it isn't cheap but was a gift from ICECO so I'm going to use it.
@@TheCampulanceMan Oh, I didn't realize that - - never mind. :-) I just thought it would be better to spend a 'little' extra rather than regret it down the road. Hey, could you sell the gifted one along with your old one?
What are you going to do for heat and A/C? You will need it moving forward. What’s your plan?
I have a diesel air heater and an AC unit that I installed in other parts of the truck. These were the original systems that I never used, so were removed.
The factory AC/Heater units will only work when the engine is on
