Hello friends, how helpful video. dear Jelena, I am sorry you had vertigo, I hope you’re totally recovered soon. I so much appreciate this video because last week I had a very bad episode of vertigo while practicing Hatha, it was a balance session at home, it was perfect until right before savasana, lied on the floor ,I turned flex legs to right head to left and suddenly I felt everything was moving around..felt nausea, horrible, tried to sit, then lied again and watched a lamp on ceiling, moving as circled after some minutes stopped. All day I felt tired, like moving but fortunately it didn’t repeat. I suffer tinnitus, so both situations made me feel very bad I stop practicing 3 days, I visited Otorrinolaringolist, made me a movement treatment and felt much much better, I am taking some tablets(which I don’t like but I need it) so your class is very very helpful. All the best for you both. Greetings from Mexico
Thank you for making this video, and thank you for sharing, Jelena! I have a chronic illness which comes and goes, and one symptom is vertigo. The issue for me is problems adjusting the blood pressure fast enough when standing up. In yoga it can be very problematic rising up from standing forward folds, in particular with legs together. So Surya Namaskar in particular can be difficult, or flows with a lot of rising up and folding forward in a row. It rarely persists after the body adjusts, but if there's too many of them, it seems like my body can't adjust enough and I get a low level vertigo until I sit still for a time. When this occurs I keep my gaze at a specific spot while rising like you say; sometimes I have to slow it down as well or even pause half way to give the body enough time to adjust. Luckily this doesn't happen that often.
I experienced vertigo after an inner ear infection & it was awful. I often joke that if I had enemies(which I don’t) I would never wish them to experience this horrible vestibular condition. The Epley maneuver completely righted my internal compass. It was funny to hear you mention the crystal’s in the fluid filled section of the ear that can get displaced. I initially thought it was a hokie explanation until I recovered. I practiced during this awful ailment & did exactly what you are recommending. Thank you for posting things to help students accommodate their practice in not such a rigid way. It is very helpful b/c I have unfortunately been exposed to teachers that only value the practice & not the student 🙏
I've had vertigo off and on for over 20 years. It's the new normal for me. I can do yoga, calisthenics. I can even do highly detailed things like surgery (I'm a veterinarian). The key for me has been learning the proper head positioning exercises to reset my vestibular system. So if I am having vertigo, and want to do yoga, I do the positioning exercises first, then I can do yoga just like anyone else (mostly). Cool idea for a video.
I have a cervical vertebrae that's not in alignment, at first I thought I would have to stop doing yoga but it's helped my proprioception so much, I feel better than ever before. I do balancing poses every day with focus on the breath and drishti.
Thank you David and Jelena for the video. I have vertigo and I practice ashtanga. Like what you had mentioned in your video, different people manage their vertigo differently. For me, Ashtanga keeps my vertigo at bay. Namaste.
Thank you Jelena for sharing your story. This is little known disorder but it has such a strong impact both physiologically but also mentally, especially if it shows up suddenly. I experienced what is commonly called 'benign vertigo' after a yoga practice. I found myself on the floor and the room was spinning all over. Not a pleasant experience! After things calmed down a little, I did a lot of online research and found out about the Epley maneuver which I then performed and it really helped. Definitely the help of a chiropractor or other health professional is a must in case the vertigo does not go away. The instruction from this video are very helpful especially about not turning your head and keeping a fix point during your practice. Once again - thank you for sharing!
Vertigo is not pleasant I used to have it periodically and it would take some time to resolve (weeks) I came upon something called the eply maneuver on UA-cam It gently redistributes the crystals in your ear canal…or something Anyway it works for me pretty reliably Also gently challenging the balance issue without tensing up Reminding myself the room is spinning I am not 😅 Slow and gentle practice has worked so far Grateful for the practice and your excellent instruction 😊
I LOOOOOOOVE your teaching style!!! And I haven’t formally been diagnosed with vertigo but I have experienced the dizziness and I’ve actually fallen down 😵💫 I’ve been fine but it is kind of scary the focused gaze tip is rock on and I love how you emphasized not to do the full range of motion especially with the backbends! 👏🏼👏🏼 awesome video thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you Jelena and David for posting this …I have experienced vertigo occasionally in the past, it’always came on after a flight and seemed to get worse if I stayed in a hotel with fast lifts…..I spent the whole of one cruise just using the stairs in case it happened again …actually not a bad thing🤣mine felt like when I placed my foot I felt the floor was closer or sometimes further away than i was judging rather than the spinning type, luckily it didn’t last long but one time I went to the Dr and he gave me meds for sickness ( I wasn’t feeling sick) guess what the possible side effect of the meds were….yup dizziness 😆the moral is take advice BUT check the meds …mine went back to the pharmacy! You two are awesome by the way 💕
Thank you so much Jelena for sharing this. I was diagnosed with vertigo lateral syndrome some years ago, nothing too tragic but the crystals moving cause my vertigo from time to time and it's terrifying as f**ck. My last episode was with utthita parshvakonasana some months ago, due to the head movement, but fortunately it got better after little time. Thanks for sharing the tips, you're right, you really need a lot of careful attention when an episode sets in. But it's encouraging to hear people out there dealing with the same issues, especially vertigo that is often downplayed and not fully understood. Please make more videos like this one, on how to deal with injuries, pain, suffering in general... ❤🙏
Doing ‘trikonasana’ lying on the couch helps balance crystals, turning the head only to gaze up (do both sides multiple times, hold for 30 seconds, switch sides). This really helped me, at first it feels like it’s getting worse but it helps stabilise. Combined with eye exercises (while sitting on couch, like doing your practice with your eyes/ drishti only.) and I was fine the next day.
so good information! how about headache? i have headache so often. at my morning practice to day i felt almost nauseous… can i practice this way, when i have the worst headache?
Thank you so much for the video! I am struggling with vertigo and all the poses where head is lower than the pelvis triggers it a lot. As well as the lack of sleep. Neck massages sound like a great idea. Is there anything else you can recommend?…
This is a really interesting and novel topic for a video. Practicing in this way would probably be good for anyone feeling lightheaded or living with Ménière’s (like my dad). I’m sorry you had to experience such serious vertigo, Jelena. Could you two maybe do a video on hypokalemia due to hyperhidrosis (asking for a friend ;)? Thanks! 😊 🧡🧡

Jelena, hats off to your persistence and dedication. I pray that God heals you completely of this vertigo.
