    1. It sounds like mostly No-cut record until 2nd verse
    2. Omg this is a fast and very precise picking
    3. PICKING on pretty fresh strings sounds awesomely spring-ish
    4. Sounds pretty much like Ellefson's riffs ;)

      Lars is such an idiot, and everyone else should have spoke up. Because these bass tracks sound pretty legit. I cannot even pick up any bass on the record, and I don't even know why they thought this would be a great idea. Everything sounds so damn tinny and flat. It sounds so bad, even the guitars.

  • @rahlife7923
    @rahlife7923 10 років тому +62

    It's a fucking shame they turned his bass trax basically off on this record. They turned the bass way up on the guitar and killed the record. If they remixed it with this sick fucking bass tone and a thinner guitar that shit would be nasty!!!!!!! FUCK what a bummer that James and Lars took cliffs death out on Jason and drowned his sound out. God damn that bass tone is sooo sick!

      I agree. It is well known about taking out frustrations on Jason. Those who don't know that are too young. Did you ever some UA-camr do this album called "Justice for Jason"? The songs sound so much warmer. I can't listen to JFA anymore. I would if released it with the bass turned up and EQd warmer.

      Sorry @Finn Maksvell you have to do your research pal. A lot of the people that know what's up have been fans since bare minimum the early 90's when I was 10 and before and have paid close attention. Anyway, what I want to know is how the dude who posted this got these trax!?! Did he get his hands on the masters or was this an inside job? Really interesting regardless. Thanks to dude who posted this.

    This, harvester of sorrow, and dyers eve are Lars’ best work. What happened to him if he kept going at that pace like in the 80’s improving in each album like he was he’d be a drum god today. Lombardo and benante just keep getting better and better what is his excuse. He has one job being a world class drummer and songwriter for Metallica. He could have been as good as anybody in the business especially with his resources and contacts. He’s was one of my main influences for drums. I think losing cliff and not having him to light a fire under his ass had a lot to do with his regression. With cliff the whole band improved at a geometric rate losing him was a tragedy imagine if he lived the possibilities of where their music and abilities would have gone

    And because their guitar tone has so much low end. You actually hear WHAAAAAAAAAAHHHH bassy undertones in the guitar. Some people would say that gutiar sound would clash with Jason's bass tone...
    Personally I always listen to a custom AJFA with boosted bass, and haven't gone back since.

    I always thought the bass could have been a bit louder on Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets but this album has absolutely no low end at all. With the other albums you can hear it if you listen for it but this one seemed empty sounding to me. Whatever the reason, it's a shame Other than the lack of bass this is a great album!

    This makes total sense. It always sucked that the bass was cut down on this album, cuz Jason Newsted was insane with a pick! Even listening to just THIS is heavy as hell! Everyone here should check out some live videos of his previous band Flotsam and Jetsam, the first thing you'll notice is he completely carries the entire band, INCLUDING the drummer. This album always seemed like they just went without a bassist in honor of Cliff. But we all missed out on how good this guy really was.

  • @artvandelay4485
    @artvandelay4485 7 років тому +31

    and people say Jason is not a good bass player. This is fucking harder and heavier than anything Cliff did. Try play that fucking intro this precise with a pick. Its harder than it seams. And this is 100% on time

    • @SlayersOfTrolls
      @SlayersOfTrolls 7 років тому +10

      Jason was much tighter than cliff and he plays hard. If you watch him play live he plays with his arm more and not with his wrists to get that extra power. Cliff was a much better soloist though.

    It F&J Jason has a galloping style, alternate picking and a really bouncy sound. Doomsday has a perfect bass sound for that album. I remember reading an actual, paper, magazine article! I know right? That James more or less tasked Jason with employing more down stroke style picking for a more solid thick sound that matched James’ aggressive down stroking.

  • @_Only_Zuul
    @_Only_Zuul 7 років тому +5

    there's a weird ego thing with bass players and pick VS fingers but honestly i think. IMO if you want to play fast with better attack, tone and accuracy it's pick FTW. i play with pick and fingers at the same time.

  • @ozricness

    Lars is so stubborn, refusing to get AJFA remixed after all these years, just so as not to be viewed as admitting his mistake. I wonder if that's James' excuse too.
    I know there are some online versions with added bass but it would be awesome if we could actually hear Jason's authentic bass sound from the master tapes.

    @finn maksvell do the deep Metallica research. Watch interviews and read. James has openly admitted he and Lars took out their frustrations on Jason being the new guy back then. Also, just listen to AJFA. There's absolutely NO bass at all on that record except for that undeniable bass from the guitars. That's why when u turn that record up real loud it has that negative guitar bass that basically farts out. Sad.

      They didn't say they turned it down because they were taking it out on Jason. They did say that that they were taking it out on Jason but they didn't say it affected the mixing. Plus it doesn't explain why they turn him up live or why they turned him back up in the Black album. If you listen to the guitar itself it has a lot of low end for a guitar. The guitar's low end interfered with the bass and that's why they turned it down.

    LOL thats nice n all but u know it aint true. it wasnt for that reason, or cause they were mourning cliff or cause they wanted to harrass jason a bit (no one would do that to their own art intentionally). the fact is it was the late 80's and frankly most of the time you cant even hear the bass in a metal album. usually 2 guitars drown it out and the bassline will sometimes mimic the guitars. so basically they thought it sounded good at the time. no big conspiracy

    There's a reason the bass is barely audible in Justice. It's simply because the guitars had scooped mids. Scooping mids has to be compensated by having a lot of lows and highs otherwise the sound wouldn't work. Listen to the isolated guitar tracks of this song in particular, the bass caused by palm mutes is really loud; having a loud bassline underneath wouldn't work.

      Ikr the and justice for Jason mixes sound like ass cuz off all the low if metallica wanted that kinda gtr tone then she shuda at least put a high pass on the bass and increased the mids that woulda been an okay mix

    • @aldo420ful
      @aldo420ful 9 років тому

      Mugi Snax metallica already acknowledged they lowered the bass volume on purpose, your argument is invalid and jason is a loser with no dignity for allowing that

      aldo420ful he'd been in the band for 2 years at that point, plus with lars being lars, do you think the result would have been any different? and we don't know if he didn't try to protest..he must've, the bass is non-existent, maybe during the blackened intro, very faintly during the clean part in one and again clean part in to live is to die. at the end of the day it's james' and lars' ship and thir word was/is final
      i listened to death magnetic for the first time yesterday..it's not as bad as i read..at times it's like a mish-mash of their previous albums, like them trying to live in the past..but i was just thinking how it's kind of unfair that the bass is loud and prominent, yet on their greatest album there's none

    • @Goabnb94
      @Goabnb94 9 років тому +3

      +Mugi “Mucchan” Snax And James and Lars mixed the album because the engineer couldn't keep up with the hectic schedule. Do you know what happens when a band mixes themselves? There is a reason the drums are *so fucking loud*, of course the drummer will turn himself up. So, when Jason plays the same track behind really loud guitars and drums, it makes it harder to hear.

    • @Goabnb94

      +aldo420ful A)They hazed him in the first 6 months only.
      B)If that were true, why is Garage Days perfectly fine? Surely they would ruin that and not a studio album on purpose. What kind of legacy would that set for Cliff?
      C)The recording schedule was so hectic, Jason tracked his parts without the band and James and Lars mixed the tracks. He never heard the final version until after it had released. Maybe due to some "hes the new guy" but always due to the schedule of the band needing to travel, tour and record at the same time
      D)He never really complained about it because he didn't want to be that new guy to challenge everything. They still turned him way up live, so...

    You probably could. I went cheap and used Audacity. Most of the tracks have had their speed altered slightly for the Guitar Hero game they're avaliable from, so if you fiddle around with the tempo and sync them up, you can export it as one complete song. I've done it with most other Metallica tracks too, as Cliff paticularly is HIGHLY under-represented on most pressings of their albums, something you can't tell until you hear his tracks alone.
