cliff is so highly regarded not for his technical prowess but for being the creative talent behind the song writing of metallica. the epic breakdowns like in this song at the four minute mark and the soaring bass line over the end of the guitar solo (6:20) are examples of the classically influenced complex arrangements that disappeared with cliff
James had no concept of harmonies until Cliff came into the band. All those multitracked harmony compositions James has the ability to write, he learned from Cliff, James has stated that numerous times, and he was 24. By 30 he would have been a beast.
This has been my favorite Metallica song since the album came out. I must say, I actually enjoy it even more without the guitar! Cliff totally rocks this song.
Cliff Knew alot music theory. Enough to could fit his playing to the rest of the other people's playing, just listen to seek and destroy, or orion, He's a beast.. He was the best... R.I.P. CLIFFORD LEE BURTON
he is rated that high NOT because he plays the bass better than other BUT because of his songs. he is the master off bass but even more important he is the master of composing. his basslines are much more intersesting, fascinating, "deeper" (dont know how to say). even more than for example steve harris` bassliness.
It was mainly how Cliff attacked the bass live more than in studio. Live he was a mad man on stage. That we know is true. Funny how people bash on Rob in Metallica his bass style is not far off from Cliff's. Metallica were never a bass heavy band anyways. All metallica bassists have been excellent in their own way.
I put this version beneath the original version into my mp3 , because its : TOTAL BASS EARGASM !!!!!! (im guitar player ) this is SOO DAMM COOL !! CLIFF I LOVE YOU !!!!
6:21 fucker try to play that with fingers, I always miss some notes on that part, mostly because I have to go up and down the strings on the frets (3 &2)... Fuck the Cliff-haters. R.I.P Clifford Lee Burton, best fucken bass player in the world... \m/
His bass lines pretty much just follow the guitars. It's fast yes, but lots of people can play fast. James wrote a lot of the riffs, Cliff wrote some to I'm sure, but for the most part he was just playing along with Jame's riffs.
best ever bass player in thrash metal and probably heavy mental yes definitely could not agree with you more. Best ever bass player no way! John Paul jones (led Zep), Jack Bruce (cream), les Claypool (primus), flee (RHCP)Jaco Pastorius (various)....and I could go on they are all amazing for their own specialties and playing styles.
Yes, but normally they have voice too. They generally are named as no bass. I know for sure Creeping Death and For Whom the Bell Tolls, but I think there must be versions for many other songs
5:14--Cliff plays a C, where Hetfield plays a C# in the original recording. That doesn't seem right, nor does it sound right. Is this really Cliff playing or someone else playing the bass guitar? Or did Cliff do that on purpose?
we should keep in mind he was only 24 when he died. he was also a practice nerd who played many hours a day. so i think he would have become a god some years later... but maybe you're just a technique sucker and can't understand his potential
And yet, master is clearly the superior position of the two, so are the people who like the song lesser than those who don't? Are we the sheep? Besides, it's a fucking youtube comment, who cares.
I'm not saying he wasn't good, I'm saying he's overrated. He became a "god" because of his death. Had he not died, he'd probably be "that cool bass player from Metallica". But since he died he's "the greatest bass player to ever live". He was no better at his instrument than Kirk or James were at their's.
i didnt mean specificly this song. like for example the call of ktulu which features a complet different kind of playing. and yes, i know hes not the best bass man. after two years of playing the bass i can play all metallica songs by my self except of some details. i can play it, but it still doesnt sound as good as the original_ you know what i mean.. for me as a german its just hard to explain it in english.
maybe, but there are for sure some even more overrated musicians and compared to those other famous bassists, guitarists... cliff is at least one with a good sense for music and he helped metallica and other metal bands inspired by him to do great music and i guess that's what really counts
Cliff used his fingers tho, hence why it sounds sloppy, although i dont think it sounds sloppy at all thats just the sound fingers make on bass strings, and jason used a pick, and with a pick you can be more accurate when playing the notes.
I am not prof musician but sorry guys try to play with 3 fingers and this distorsion. Cliff was a fucking faster player, I think the point is the big muff makes the sound strange and also without guitars it miss the high notes. Metallica are dead with Cliff, Jason is very good but what the fuck!
the bass sounds a little weired. listening to the real version it sounds right but here there are so notes missing.(and im sure there are some missing at 0:30 )
why would it be sloppy...are you fucking kidding me...this become stereotype...cliff is sloppy and steve harris is not? dafuq they are both percussive, only cliff tone consist od tube screamer overdrive and steve tone is bright and clean..now go on and tell me cliff is sloppy and that this is not ua-cam.com/video/NrHnerXEx5M/v-deo.html
Marijan Barać why should bass be clean..some people like it rough and it adds perfect overtone to the band...you love iron maiden for their unique sound..well its because of steves hard hitting strings against neck...same goes to cliff..
They indeed aren't hard most of the cases, but they do need a lot of practice, especially for scales and arpeggios in higher speeds. And the question here isn't even the technique, but how it should sound, fit and precise enough to create base with the drums, "sloppy" and strong enough to get his style. Personally I like his tone, but, as a bass player, I agree he is sometimes overrated. There are many bassists as great as him, or even better, in metal and out of the style. Look for Billy Sheehan, Steve Harris, Steve DiGiorgio, Geddy Lee and the god of bass himself, Jaco Pastorius.
I really do look up to Cliff, and I love his work, but he is very overrated. Although he is my favourite bassist, we need to look at it with a more objective view.
cliff is so highly regarded not for his technical prowess but for being the creative talent behind the song writing of metallica. the epic breakdowns like in this song at the four minute mark and the soaring bass line over the end of the guitar solo (6:20) are examples of the classically influenced complex arrangements that disappeared with cliff

This has been my favorite Metallica song since the album came out. I must say, I actually enjoy it even more without the guitar! Cliff totally rocks this song.
This was Cliff's favorite Tallica song too.
i like how he plays different notes than the lead guitar
I love the tone of the bass
now I can practice my banjo :D
Cliff Knew alot music theory. Enough to could fit his playing to the rest of the other people's playing, just listen to seek and destroy, or orion, He's a beast.. He was the best...
R.I.P. CLIFFORD LEE BURTON

Best Bass Player EVER !!!!
this is ABSOLUTE MASTERCLASS !!!!!
Hamster! Hamster! Where're the dreams that I've been after?
It was mainly how Cliff attacked the bass live more than in studio. Live he was a mad man on stage. That we know is true. Funny how people bash on Rob in Metallica his bass style is not far off from Cliff's. Metallica were never a bass heavy band anyways. All metallica bassists have been excellent in their own way.
this is perfect, now i can practice my guitar cover with vocals :)
and I just play my bass with cliff and lars... hell fuckin yeah
lol, im playing the guitar parts in my head lol
Helal
I put this version beneath the original version into my mp3 , because its : TOTAL BASS EARGASM !!!!!!
(im guitar player ) this is SOO DAMM COOL !!
CLIFF I LOVE YOU !!!!
one does not simply call Cliff Burton "average"...
ahahhahasha :D :D you are good man :D
Drums, bass and vocals are the essentials of the band. Guitars are optional.
6:21 fucker try to play that with fingers, I always miss some notes on that part, mostly because I have to go up and down the strings on the frets (3 &2)...
Fuck the Cliff-haters.
R.I.P Clifford Lee Burton, best fucken bass player in the world...
\m/
\m/ The Icecube-lover But there are no cliff haters
@breathingreflection well i've heard many tracks like this and the bass seems like it does something different from guitars
Thankyou. :p
His bass lines pretty much just follow the guitars. It's fast yes, but lots of people can play fast. James wrote a lot of the riffs, Cliff wrote some to I'm sure, but for the most part he was just playing along with Jame's riffs.
And a lot of people can't, including James before he met Cliff
Have you heard the bass track to Disposable Heroes? Try playing that.
CLIFF RULEZ !!!
I synced the original song up in a different tab with a slight delay, it's so much heavier
best ever bass player in thrash metal and probably heavy mental yes definitely could not agree with you more. Best ever bass player no way! John Paul jones (led Zep), Jack Bruce (cream), les Claypool
(primus), flee (RHCP)Jaco Pastorius (various)....and I could go on they are all amazing for their own specialties and playing styles.
sandman sevenseven not even metal
Are there Metallica tracks with JUST guitar and drums on UA-cam
Yes, but normally they have voice too. They generally are named as no bass. I know for sure Creeping Death and For Whom the Bell Tolls, but I think there must be versions for many other songs
6:21 - 6:41 Go Cliff!!!!!!!! \,,/_
5:14--Cliff plays a C, where Hetfield plays a C# in the original recording. That doesn't seem right, nor does it sound right. Is this really Cliff playing or someone else playing the bass guitar? Or did Cliff do that on purpose?
Is there bassdrum-hits dubbed over the snare on Puppets? Old AC/DC-trick....
we should keep in mind he was only 24 when he died. he was also a practice nerd who played many hours a day. so i think he would have become a god some years later... but maybe you're just a technique sucker and can't understand his potential
luckily drums and bass queerasolamnete as the voice goes, well it does not matter to me just like me
a guide for me and like this video
And yet, master is clearly the superior position of the two, so are the people who like the song lesser than those who don't? Are we the sheep? Besides, it's a fucking youtube comment, who cares.

I agree with you. He's really good and all, but if he had not died, he would'nt have been that popular.
It sounds a little sloppy because when you play a Rickenbacker with your fingers this is the sound you usually get.
it should say that it has vocals
3 people loves j bieber drummin'
58 masters can´t control 1 puppet.
and the song is Master(singular) of puppets(plural).
So, there is 1 master and 58 puppets
@blackmetalwarrior who?
I can figure out harmony parts, does that make me as amazing as Cliff? No, it makes Cliff just like everyone else.
Ya dude but this is Cliff's version
maybe,
but there are for sure some even more overrated musicians and compared to those other famous bassists, guitarists... cliff is at least one with a good sense for music and he helped metallica and other metal bands inspired by him to do great music and i guess that's what really counts
Shhhhhloply
And featuring not so legendary drummer, "Lars Ulrich"!
luckily drums and bass queerasolamnete as the voice goes, well it does not matter to me just like me
a video like this lml
i clicked on this cuz i thort it was D'n'B
Cliff used his fingers tho, hence why it sounds sloppy, although i dont think it sounds sloppy at all thats just the sound fingers make on bass strings, and jason used a pick, and with a pick you can be more accurate when playing the notes.
Cliff sounded so much better with a better drummer , who would challenge his chops and techniques, does that make sense to you guys??
I am not prof musician but sorry guys try to play with 3 fingers and this distorsion. Cliff was a fucking faster player, I think the point is the big muff makes the sound strange and also without guitars it miss the high notes. Metallica are dead with Cliff, Jason is very good but what the fuck!
this comment Needs an update!
Could've just made the title a bit shorter. Master of puppets no guitar. 😂
Not a Ric on this song. It's all Aria, except The Thing That Should Not Be.
30% Drums 80% Bass 20% vocals does not seem legit
It's challenging, but not impossible. Cliff isn't god. He's way overrated.
the bass sounds a little weired. listening to the real version it sounds right but here there are so notes missing.(and im sure there are some missing at 0:30 )

I'm with you on that one. His tone is just gross. These songs are thought of as almost impossible to play, when really, they aren't that hard.

its very sloppy but I bet they didnt care and he was rockin with fingers ya know? One of those things where your like fuck it
overrated my ass. 24 years old and fucking distorsion
Lots of people can write harmony parts. lol
but your (as far as i know) not in a great band nor famous
Nope, I'm in a shitty garage band and I'm definitely not famous. But my point was Cliff is overrated.
I really do look up to Cliff, and I love his work, but he is very overrated.
Although he is my favourite bassist, we need to look at it with a more objective view.
I have to agree, Cliff has always been way overrated in my opinion.
He's still overrated.
comon he was good but average
He's average.
