The only thing that is standing as wrong atp is: - Subaru was always in the picture, contrary to my speculation that he wasn't - Al does indeed know of events from 400 years ago, somehow. I don't think I included it in this video, but I had also speculated that Al's real not was not Al, which was indeed more or less confirmed at the end of Arc 8, and that Echidna probably taught Al how to use his Authority, which was also confirmed at the end of Arc 8. Hmm im not so sure about that. You are saying that Al is not flugel but how can we say that for sure? For all we know, he could have been Flugel, who failed to save Satella 400 yrs ago. Here is my theory, from what we know so far, Flugel and Satella know each other and possibly are intimate with each other. However, something happened 400 years ago where he had to seal Satella to stop her from destroying the world. He then decided to try, once again, to save her. He failed. He failed over and over again until he decided to give up. This explains why he is always regretful when he meets Satella. It also explains the massive gap of time that we have between the world ending event 400 years ago and Subaru's arrival to this world. Also, there is a high possibilty that Aldebaran is not his original name. Echidna, from the prologue of Arc 8, said that he had fallen to the title of the following star, Aldebaran. This implies that he had a different name before as Aldebaran is the name that is bestowed to him by that witch. To conclude, my prediction is that i think Tappei is trying to make a parallel between Flugel/Al - Satella and Subaru - Emilia. The former failed to reach a happy ending while the latter will, hopefully, reach it. (Sorry if this took way too long to read. Im just too invested in this amazing story😅)

Would be interesting that instead of the same person, Al and Subaru had the same "role". If Subaru is a sage candidate, maybe Al is a "failed" Sage Candidate. The reason they got Isekaied was to see if they could fulfil that role. Subaru is not the chosen one, he is just someone that was brought to see if he could do something.
@@Twoseconds001 Witch factors corrupt the Soul, and the more you use them + the more incompatible you are, the more it is so. She was supposedly incompatible and supposedly took in all 7 witch factors at 1 point destroying half the world. (So you know she literally meets all possible requirements of soul corruption in the worst way possible). We also know that probably because of that a new persona "Witch of Envy" was born. The other witches hate the Witch of Envy but like Satella. And as for the present, she seems to be sealed in a desert close to the edge of the world eternally tormented by her second persona "envy" created by the corruption caused in her soul. And soul damage is worse than physical damage in Re Zero. (Especially witch factor effects) So she's in a permanent torture state worse than all others without being able to escape 💀 (and even if she escaped, her body, as the Witch of Envy, would just cause havoc in the entire world.... well... the rest of it 💀). That's why Satella looks desperate and asked for Subaru to find and kill her. (Also, Subaru being compatible with all Witch Factors is probably a good candidate to be able to kill her without suffering side effects). But... Since Subaru also seems to have forgotten something... (that he only subconsciously remembers when meeting Satella in the shadow garden)... then Subaru and Satella probably have made some sort of PACT before Subaru got ISEKAIed (which also sealed the memories of the pact itself)
I love this video and a lot of the points you bring up. Despite it being rather popular, I never subscribed to the “Subaru = Al”, Subaru = Flugel”, etc. theories. Tapper very much well can show how Subaru and Al are alike without them literally being the same person, and examples of him already performing this is with Subarus other foils, such as Roswell and Todd. Arc 7 does a good job of picking up and expanding upon what Arc 6 sorta laid out with the “Hell bearing the name of oneself”. The Chisha/Vincent scenario only makes it more probable with playing out a specific role. The only situation I can sorta see with one person being another person is with Emilia = Satella, and I only say that bcuz of the situation with Louis = Spica, but even then I’m not sure how well it’ll be done. I would like to see you do a video about Emilia/Satella and about their connection in the story. Great vid as usual.
Excellent character analysis as always, Asa. There is big reason Al is so popular in theory crafting and looking over the mysteries of the Re:Zero world. Every single aspect is so compelling that he steals the show in any of his appearances, big or small. I much prefer your presented idea of him being a figurative foil of Subaru that pushes him to keep on being the Hero or the Fool rather him literally being Subaru or Flugel. He encompasses the themes of identity as much as Subaru himself does, so I'm always excited to see where his character is going. I hope that by the end of it, Al will be respect as a fundamental core of Re:Zero's worldbuilding and writing quality, as that would mean the payoff to the mystery was just as good as the buildup to it. P.S. You censoring Arakiya made me laugh my ass off.
The script turned out great Asa! You do a good job with the accompanying visuals despite the lack of relevant images for novel videos like this. Little quirks like trans Al and blurring Arakiya always make me smile

Great video. Not only do you examine the story details, but you also look at it through the lens of the series' themes in a way a lot of theories don't. I like your theory a lot, and I hope it's true. Flugel, Subaru, and Al all being different people cast in the same "role" of Sage would be a great way to continue the series' longest running theme of expectations. Having said that... I still don't fully believe it yet. There's still way too many connections between those three and certain inconsistencies that make accepting it difficult for me. Unless I'm misunderstanding Al's powers, it doesn't actually seem like he can loop. In the latest volume, we finally get the most in-depth showcase of his authority, and it appears he sets up a matrix and then goes through simulations of the event (most of which result in his death) until he discovers the right course of action. He's in a much more precarious position than Subaru, who gets to fully redo. Al doesn't, his life is in mortal danger a lot more because of those limitations, which is probably why he lost his arm. He couldn't just go back and redo it right. If this is how his power works, this would prevent him from making a big loop through time like you mentioned. In Arc 5, Garfiel notes that he found Al while trying to track Subaru’s scent because they smelled the same. However, Garfied cannot smell Miasma, meaning Al’s natural scent is what smells just like Subaru’s. Does Garfield just think all Japanese people smell the same? I mean, maybe, but it's questionable. In Kasaneru IF, Echidna states the the Oni are a "created" race. In Ram and the Night Study Group, Ram admits to herself that she recognized the Japanese characters Subaru was writing. This seems to imply Flugel had a hand in creating the Oni race. The Oni race also had a strict law preventing twins. Al was fine with Ram's existence. He was extrememly confused when Rem wasn't Ram, but not angry. He only got angry and disgusted when he found out the older sister was still alive, meaning he would have likely been okay with either Rem or Ram's existence, just not at the same time. He cares about the Oni clan's twin law, which seems to have connections to Flugel. Why else would Al care so much about an Oni custom unless he had ties to Flugel? Lastly, and maybe most importantly, it seems like Satella has a genuine love for Subaru. Does she just love every Sage? Does she just confuse them all with each other? That seems unlikely because she calls Subaru by name. I wrote too much. Anyway, nice video.
the point of the twin law thingy was that oni twins were born with half the power of a regular oni and the oni tribe had this mentality that weakness is uncool. rem/ram, if they weren't born twins and instead were a single person, would have been a double horned oni who's also the reincarnation of the oni god. Ram is the xurrent incarnation of the oni god and she seems just fine when she's only using one horn (reffering to when she was little or when she uses rem's through synesthesia) but maybe she's actually extremely nerfed and therefore would not be able to fullfill the role she's supposed to (assuming Al has future knowledge or knows about roswaal's plan or something else)
I find it fun that Al doesn't have episodic memory, so not only does the audience not know his deal, but if we were to ask him what his deal is, he himself wouldn't know. Although tbf since Al himself is the one who mentions this (as stated in the wct cut content page), he may be lying. Edit: so someone replied that Al probably isn't lying. See reply for more details
Al's not lying. His memory issues are real. This detail was also stated in Another Memory Snow, where Al says to himself that he lacks any memories of playing in the snow. He has no reason to lie when he's muttering to himself without anyone else to hear him, so in other words, he has a real problem. Sorry if this reply comes off a bit 🤓-ish. That was not my intention behind writing it.

Theoretically if Al went back in time years (IF he can like Asa said) around the time of arc3 when Natsuki Subaru didn't exist as an "observer" (meaning a no Subaru existence loop for Al) it could make sense why Al didn't know Rem. If Subaru doesn't exist Rem dies to the Ulgarm in arc2 like in episode 7 of the anime.
Excellent character analysis and breakdown as always Asa. Al is honestly one of the most interesting characters in the series for me. There is so much we truly don't know about him and while most of the community thinks he's another version of Subaru I think there is still more to it than that. Re:Zero ties to stars is so captivating that I'm actually glad a creator would actually tackle it and break it down as well as you did. I know your videos don't get a lot of views or attraction as they deserve, but you been a big addition to the community.

Loved the video. One small correction though. At the part where you were quoting Al and Subaru's conversation in Arc 5, Subaru is the one who says that "he wouldn't even need a reason to pull a kid back to the sidewalk..." in response to Al. I'm basing this on the Light Novel though so I'm not sure if it's different from the Web Novel.
If I remember correctly, I think Aldebaran was not mad about Ram being Alive, he was Mad about Ram not having a Sister, meaning he was implying Rem existence is something that makes Al uncomfortable. Most likely Subaru is still a reincarnation of Flugel since there were some tips in ark 6 like Shaula calling him Master and Echidna being interested in Subaru in ark 4 since Echidna was also interested in Flugel in the past.
putting aside he's subaru or not it seems like it was clear it is implied that al atleast experience what subaru does atleast once with the whole interaction thingy, with the problem he's having is his memory missing even if he is not subaru i think it's not entirely impossible if he's atleast experience all of that himself or he was also brought to another timeline everytime subaru loops
Its pretty clear that Aldebaran is a Sage candidate that made a huge sacrifice by following the route stars laid out for him. Thats why he hates the name "Aldebaran" and wears a mask all the time. It reminds him of his true identity as a Sage candidate. Subaru right now is following route of a sage. So in Arc 2 when he confirmed Rem and Ram was still alive he was angry and alarmed because it meant Subaru already went down the path of a Sage. He probably looped back to Ginunhive hoping to trap Subaru with Ol Shamak to prevent him from doing the same sacrifice he did. But Subaru wasn't there so combined with his sacrifice he just gave up. Until he saw priscilla. He then abandoned his road of trapping Subaru and accepted the sacrifice he made. Started following Priscilla instead of whatever sacrifice he made. But events in Arc 8 happened. So he is now back to his main goal even stronger than before. Why does he have ties to Echidna? I think Echidna modified his RbD for this goal. Its definitely feasible that Echidna can modify authorities with her infinite knowledge. And last piece of the puzzle is why does he look like Subaru and share all these similarities? This is something i cant explain. My guess is that all sage candidates are created using the same template Flügel had. But this opens a whole can of worms about Subaru not being an isekai...
I just had to rewatch this video after the drop of NO STELLA NO LIFE 1 and while (un)patiently waiting for web novel to pick back up. Like you, I don't buy into the Subaru = Al = Flugel theories but damn, Al choosing which affinity to learn is not helping as the difference in affinity was one of the major glaring issues to these theories. I personally believe Tappei is baiting readers into believing Al = Subaru (c'mon, would 1 of the 3 biggest mysteries of Re:Zero be so obvious?) and your video reminded me of the glaring implications of it being the case, so thanks!

So my theory is that Flugel is Natsuki Kenichi, and that Al is secretly actually Subaru's brother. Kenichi says something weird that Subaru is his oldest son. Beatrice says something interesting when she finds out Subaru is named after a star. She says" what type of cruel person name you after a star?"

great analysis i wonder how a fight between the two would be written? would al be unkillable since it would seem to subaru that he randomly is aware of every single minute detail subaru has prepared, no matter how many times he went back? it's a paradoxical game of rock paper scissors that could give anyone a headache i'm assuming the fight wouldnt be onesided with pure brute strength, that would be stupid
Something about Rem and Ram perhaps has to do with Roswaals plans. We know he wants them like combine or whatever? So they can kill the dragon. I have no idea why this makes Al angry or how it connects to anything. He finds it disgusting and now that we know he knew Echidna… having some idea of her plans isnt at all crazy. He’s definitely a failed clone of Flugel, who themselves is almost definitely real Subaru. Our boy is clearly the only successful clone. And also Rem is probably a creation of Pandora’s power to alter probability, to nerf Ram. She might have been created shortly before Subaru arrived, but Al, as a “Subaru” is immune to the timeline change. Alternatively, Al and Subaru are both glimpses into the fact that even the most twisted and lost individuals have other choices. They could be better people if they choose to learn and grow and rise above their worst impulses. Furthermore that just because they inherited the legacy of this twisted person doesn’t invalidate the choices they’ve made and who they choose to be now. “We are who we choose to be”.

We’ll I don’t think Al’s a future Subaru. I thought like how echidna, had multiple selves there’s something similar going on with Subaru. I mean why was echidna studying immortality and cloning in the first place. I don’t think she’s the type of person to really just do it for herself.
This my friend is something to think about. I know im 9 months late but it doesn’t necessarily need to be subaru. Kind of like Satella = Emilia. I dont necessarily think thats the case either but more than maybe Emilia wasnt an only child and maybe she wasnt just frozen for 100 years…maybe more? Maybe something happened in that gap we still dont know. With Subaru it could be something similar but yet in a different sense. The way rezero works is there are so many things that utilize time or even manipulate the sense of reality but its done so well that it doesnt really leave a hole to plug. We just have to wait and see
There is no such thing as a Sin Archbishop of Envy; Satella is the one who "represents" the sin in the Witch Cult. Even if he does have Pride, none of the Sin Archbishops were aware of there being a Pride in their ranks and having a Witch Factor doesn't automatically make you a Sin Archbishop. There's literally no need to make Aldebaran into a Sin Archbishop when nothing in the story has indicated it.
@@flxs64 What do you mean the Authority is the reason why he's a Sin Archbishop, Subaru has the Authorities of Sloth and Greed yet isn't a Sin Archbishop. As for the sin of Aldebaran's Authority... He bears a power that allows him to die and return to life that is influenced by conditions involving himself and something external. It's so similar to Return by Death that it's difficult to justify that both Authorities wouldn't be of the same sin. Since Witch Factors can be shared, and Subaru's Authority was bestowed to him by Satella, who Aldebaran also has a connection to as seen in Sunlight on the Water, it would make sense for them to both possess Envy. I'm not saying Pride is out of the question, but unless anything changes, I am firm in my conviction that the likelihood for Envy is stronger at this moment in time.
I’ve always believed in the Subaru is flugel theory because the one I heard has nothing to do with a time loop. (Spoilers I think) The one I heard is that flugel is Subaru from 300 years ago and after the complete destruction of his travelling party (echidna became a witch, hoshin dissapeared, lagunica is busy being a king), the sealing of his lover satella after she became the witch of envy was the last straw and he just sent himself back to his world with no memories. 300 years later satella found him and brought him back to the re:zero world because she loved him and then all the events of the story happen. There is no loop or fate or anything of the sort, he just is flugel and was taken without his consent.
Like 15 years ago I was reading up about Subaru the car company. (I may get some details wrong... this was 15 years ago after all) In African "star mythos" A man went on a mission one night, to hunt for food to feed his 6 daughters. He saw 3 Zebra grazing and launched his spear at one... He missed. But when he went to retrieve his spear, he spotted a GIANT lion watching the Zebra and he knew if he went for his spear, the lion would eat him. So having lost his weapon, and being too ashamed to head home empty handed, he just sat there, in shame, for hundreds or thousands of years. The same stars that make up the spear he threw, in other mythos is called Orion's sword. The main star in the Lions formation is called Beetlejuice. (and I think... don't quote me here... But I believe 2 other stars in that formation are Sirius and Regulus... or is it Rigel) The hunter who failed the hunt, lost his spear, and gave up in shame is named Aldebaran. (I also believe that the Pleadese star system (Pleadese translates to Subaru in Japanese) was once 1 star that exploded. It scattered 15 or so smaller stars which make up the Pleadese star system. Only 7 of those stars are visible with the naked eye from earth though. and the 7th was flung with such force from the explosion that it has escaped the Pleadese star system, and is constantly moving away from it. Subaru the car company chose the 6 stars enclosed in a circle for its logo, because its made up of 6 smaller companies and "they are all stronger together." The 7th star that was flung away from the Subaru star cluster is named Aldebaran.)
Haven't seen the whole video yet, but notice that there are 3x3 crosses on both sides of Al's helmet. If you consider cross a unit and add those from both sides, you get 18. 18 is the number where Al spent time in Re:zero, or perhaps, the time until Subaru came into the world.
I think Al is Subarus younger brother from the real world who had his name eaten. Or maybe Subaru already had his memories eaten in a forgotten loop, which would explain why he was the only person who could remember rem.
I think al and subaru are supposed to be the "hero", but they know they can't live up to the identity everyone including themselves think they should be. Rezero is a story about love, identity and subverting fate. Lots of characters in re zero feel stuck or trapped in their fates/roles, yet subaru made people like emilia, beako, rem and others can still change or grow past their "established" roles
I actually thought your theory could’ve worked. Maybe Al has went to the end of the story and once he failed he got sent to reexperience everything and this time he knew and didn’t lose more limbs. Now that Subaru was summoned to world after Al failed, he will rewrite history, the fate the observers had wrote and he saved Ram, he met echidna and experienced the trial in the pledias watchtower, hence why he didn’t go because he was the one to face Capella because maybe she wasn’t there the original loop because her “kids” weren’t forced to play a role by Roswaal to test Subaru since he wasn’t a factor originally. Emilia never succeeded in her trial because Subaru wasn’t present and Roswaal used her to pursue his love for Echidna. She leaves the royal selection and ultimately Priscilla wins because of Al’s actions being able to overcome but ultimately fail in saving Satella at the end. Plays into the future that Emilia never got to see because she could never pass the trial and so maybe Ram or someone else passes it. Otto has no role because Subaru brought him up. Rem was never a person in the original loop because the observers never conceived her in the Al loop and so Ram had 2 horns and only one was cut during, still leaving her at an disadvantage which will lead to her demise.

Nice video, except end of arc 9 chapter 11 Al used Al Shamak and swore hell do everything he can to erase the existence of Natsuki Subaru, whether that means hes going to read the book of the dead and try to ovewrite himself as Subaru or because hes ultimately jealous of Subaru for being what he cant be, he said hes going back to his original goal but to kill Satella. What do you think this means now that we have this new information? Why does Al also call beatrice Beako, what is Al relationship with Echidna? Is Al the Subaru who took Echidnas contract ? The dragon was a husk of its former self lost his memories from old age and al book overwrite him because I think it somewhere that u need to separate yourself from the person who u read the book of the dead thats the person who takes care of the library always takes few days to rest after reading the book
Satella's genderbent name is Luna. And Tappei always likens Emilia to the moon in his tweets. Hell even the name "Natsuki" means something like "watcher of the moon". So its the moon not star.
i believe flugel failed his mission too since we dont really know what satisfies the role of a sage lets say flugel failed his mission but he was the closest to achieving the goal

Would be interesting that instead of the same person, Al and Subaru had the same "role". If Subaru is a sage candidate, maybe Al is a "failed" Sage Candidate. The reason they got Isekaied was to see if they could fulfil that role. Subaru is not the chosen one, he is just someone that was brought to see if he could do something.

She was supposedly incompatible and supposedly took in all 7 witch factors at 1 point destroying half the world. (So you know she literally meets all possible requirements of soul corruption in the worst way possible).
We also know that probably because of that a new persona "Witch of Envy" was born.
The other witches hate the Witch of Envy but like Satella.
And as for the present, she seems to be sealed in a desert close to the edge of the world eternally tormented by her second persona "envy" created by the corruption caused in her soul.
And soul damage is worse than physical damage in Re Zero. (Especially witch factor effects)
So she's in a permanent torture state worse than all others without being able to escape 💀 (and even if she escaped, her body, as the Witch of Envy, would just cause havoc in the entire world.... well... the rest of it 💀).
That's why Satella looks desperate and asked for Subaru to find and kill her. (Also, Subaru being compatible with all Witch Factors is probably a good candidate to be able to kill her without suffering side effects).
But... Since Subaru also seems to have forgotten something... (that he only subconsciously remembers when meeting Satella in the shadow garden)... then Subaru and Satella probably have made some sort of PACT before Subaru got ISEKAIed (which also sealed the memories of the pact itself)

I love this video and a lot of the points you bring up. Despite it being rather popular, I never subscribed to the “Subaru = Al”, Subaru = Flugel”, etc. theories. Tapper very much well can show how Subaru and Al are alike without them literally being the same person, and examples of him already performing this is with Subarus other foils, such as Roswell and Todd. Arc 7 does a good job of picking up and expanding upon what Arc 6 sorta laid out with the “Hell bearing the name of oneself”. The Chisha/Vincent scenario only makes it more probable with playing out a specific role. The only situation I can sorta see with one person being another person is with Emilia = Satella, and I only say that bcuz of the situation with Louis = Spica, but even then I’m not sure how well it’ll be done. I would like to see you do a video about Emilia/Satella and about their connection in the story. Great vid as usual.
Excellent character analysis as always, Asa. There is big reason Al is so popular in theory crafting and looking over the mysteries of the Re:Zero world. Every single aspect is so compelling that he steals the show in any of his appearances, big or small. I much prefer your presented idea of him being a figurative foil of Subaru that pushes him to keep on being the Hero or the Fool rather him literally being Subaru or Flugel. He encompasses the themes of identity as much as Subaru himself does, so I'm always excited to see where his character is going. I hope that by the end of it, Al will be respect as a fundamental core of Re:Zero's worldbuilding and writing quality, as that would mean the payoff to the mystery was just as good as the buildup to it.

Great video. Not only do you examine the story details, but you also look at it through the lens of the series' themes in a way a lot of theories don't. I like your theory a lot, and I hope it's true. Flugel, Subaru, and Al all being different people cast in the same "role" of Sage would be a great way to continue the series' longest running theme of expectations. Having said that... I still don't fully believe it yet. There's still way too many connections between those three and certain inconsistencies that make accepting it difficult for me.
Unless I'm misunderstanding Al's powers, it doesn't actually seem like he can loop. In the latest volume, we finally get the most in-depth showcase of his authority, and it appears he sets up a matrix and then goes through simulations of the event (most of which result in his death) until he discovers the right course of action. He's in a much more precarious position than Subaru, who gets to fully redo. Al doesn't, his life is in mortal danger a lot more because of those limitations, which is probably why he lost his arm. He couldn't just go back and redo it right. If this is how his power works, this would prevent him from making a big loop through time like you mentioned.
In Arc 5, Garfiel notes that he found Al while trying to track Subaru’s scent because they smelled the same. However, Garfied cannot smell Miasma, meaning Al’s natural scent is what smells just like Subaru’s. Does Garfield just think all Japanese people smell the same? I mean, maybe, but it's questionable.
In Kasaneru IF, Echidna states the the Oni are a "created" race. In Ram and the Night Study Group, Ram admits to herself that she recognized the Japanese characters Subaru was writing. This seems to imply Flugel had a hand in creating the Oni race. The Oni race also had a strict law preventing twins. Al was fine with Ram's existence. He was extrememly confused when Rem wasn't Ram, but not angry. He only got angry and disgusted when he found out the older sister was still alive, meaning he would have likely been okay with either Rem or Ram's existence, just not at the same time. He cares about the Oni clan's twin law, which seems to have connections to Flugel. Why else would Al care so much about an Oni custom unless he had ties to Flugel?
Lastly, and maybe most importantly, it seems like Satella has a genuine love for Subaru. Does she just love every Sage? Does she just confuse them all with each other? That seems unlikely because she calls Subaru by name.

the point of the twin law thingy was that oni twins were born with half the power of a regular oni and the oni tribe had this mentality that weakness is uncool.
rem/ram, if they weren't born twins and instead were a single person, would have been a double horned oni who's also the reincarnation of the oni god.
Ram is the xurrent incarnation of the oni god and she seems just fine when she's only using one horn (reffering to when she was little or when she uses rem's through synesthesia) but maybe she's actually extremely nerfed and therefore would not be able to fullfill the role she's supposed to (assuming Al has future knowledge or knows about roswaal's plan or something else)
I find it fun that Al doesn't have episodic memory, so not only does the audience not know his deal, but if we were to ask him what his deal is, he himself wouldn't know. Although tbf since Al himself is the one who mentions this (as stated in the wct cut content page), he may be lying.

Al's not lying. His memory issues are real. This detail was also stated in Another Memory Snow, where Al says to himself that he lacks any memories of playing in the snow. He has no reason to lie when he's muttering to himself without anyone else to hear him, so in other words, he has a real problem.

Theoretically if Al went back in time years (IF he can like Asa said) around the time of arc3 when Natsuki Subaru didn't exist as an "observer" (meaning a no Subaru existence loop for Al) it could make sense why Al didn't know Rem. If Subaru doesn't exist Rem dies to the Ulgarm in arc2 like in episode 7 of the anime.
Excellent character analysis and breakdown as always Asa. Al is honestly one of the most interesting characters in the series for me. There is so much we truly don't know about him and while most of the community thinks he's another version of Subaru I think there is still more to it than that. Loved the video. One small correction though. At the part where you were quoting Al and Subaru's conversation in Arc 5, Subaru is the one who says that "he wouldn't even need a reason to pull a kid back to the sidewalk..." in response to Al. I'm basing this on the Light Novel though so I'm not sure if it's different from the Web Novel.
If I remember correctly, I think Aldebaran was not mad about Ram being Alive, he was Mad about Ram not having a Sister, meaning he was implying Rem existence is something that makes Al uncomfortable. Most likely Subaru is still a reincarnation of Flugel since there were some tips in ark 6 like Shaula calling him Master and Echidna being interested in Subaru in ark 4 since Echidna was also interested in Flugel in the past.

Its pretty clear that Aldebaran is a Sage candidate that made a huge sacrifice by following the route stars laid out for him. Thats why he hates the name "Aldebaran" and wears a mask all the time. It reminds him of his true identity as a Sage candidate. Subaru right now is following route of a sage. So in Arc 2 when he confirmed Rem and Ram was still alive he was angry and alarmed because it meant Subaru already went down the path of a Sage.
He probably looped back to Ginunhive hoping to trap Subaru with Ol Shamak to prevent him from doing the same sacrifice he did. But Subaru wasn't there so combined with his sacrifice he just gave up. Until he saw priscilla. He then abandoned his road of trapping Subaru and accepted the sacrifice he made. Started following Priscilla instead of whatever sacrifice he made. But events in Arc 8 happened. So he is now back to his main goal even stronger than before.
Why does he have ties to Echidna? I think Echidna modified his RbD for this goal. Its definitely feasible that Echidna can modify authorities with her infinite knowledge.
And last piece of the puzzle is why does he look like Subaru and share all these similarities? This is something i cant explain. My guess is that all sage candidates are created using the same template Flügel had. But this opens a whole can of worms about Subaru not being an isekai...

Like you, I don't buy into the Subaru = Al = Flugel theories but damn, Al choosing which affinity to learn is not helping as the difference in affinity was one of the major glaring issues to these theories.
I personally believe Tappei is baiting readers into believing Al = Subaru (c'mon, would 1 of the 3 biggest mysteries of Re:Zero be so obvious?) and your video reminded me of the glaring implications of it being the case, so thanks!

Alternatively, Al and Subaru are both glimpses into the fact that even the most twisted and lost individuals have other choices. They could be better people if they choose to learn and grow and rise above their worst impulses.
Furthermore that just because they inherited the legacy of this twisted person doesn’t invalidate the choices they’ve made and who they choose to be now.

We’ll I don’t think Al’s a future Subaru. I thought like how echidna, had multiple selves there’s something similar going on with Subaru. I mean why was echidna studying immortality and cloning in the first place. I don’t think she’s the type of person to really just do it for herself.
This my friend is something to think about. I know im 9 months late but it doesn’t necessarily need to be subaru. Kind of like Satella = Emilia. I dont necessarily think thats the case either but more than maybe Emilia wasnt an only child and maybe she wasnt just frozen for 100 years…maybe more? Maybe something happened in that gap we still dont know. With Subaru it could be something similar but yet in a different sense. The way rezero works is there are so many things that utilize time or even manipulate the sense of reality but its done so well that it doesnt really leave a hole to plug. We just have to wait and see

There is no such thing as a Sin Archbishop of Envy; Satella is the one who "represents" the sin in the Witch Cult.
Even if he does have Pride, none of the Sin Archbishops were aware of there being a Pride in their ranks and having a Witch Factor doesn't automatically make you a Sin Archbishop. There's literally no need to make Aldebaran into a Sin Archbishop when nothing in the story has indicated it.

@@flxs64 What do you mean the Authority is the reason why he's a Sin Archbishop, Subaru has the Authorities of Sloth and Greed yet isn't a Sin Archbishop.
As for the sin of Aldebaran's Authority... He bears a power that allows him to die and return to life that is influenced by conditions involving himself and something external. It's so similar to Return by Death that it's difficult to justify that both Authorities wouldn't be of the same sin. Since Witch Factors can be shared, and Subaru's Authority was bestowed to him by Satella, who Aldebaran also has a connection to as seen in Sunlight on the Water, it would make sense for them to both possess Envy.
I'm not saying Pride is out of the question, but unless anything changes, I am firm in my conviction that the likelihood for Envy is stronger at this moment in time.

I’ve always believed in the Subaru is flugel theory because the one I heard has nothing to do with a time loop.
(Spoilers I think)
The one I heard is that flugel is Subaru from 300 years ago and after the complete destruction of his travelling party (echidna became a witch, hoshin dissapeared, lagunica is busy being a king), the sealing of his lover satella after she became the witch of envy was the last straw and he just sent himself back to his world with no memories. 300 years later satella found him and brought him back to the re:zero world because she loved him and then all the events of the story happen. There is no loop or fate or anything of the sort, he just is flugel and was taken without his consent.

(I may get some details wrong... this was 15 years ago after all)
In African "star mythos" A man went on a mission one night, to hunt for food to feed his 6 daughters. He saw 3 Zebra grazing and launched his spear at one... He missed. But when he went to retrieve his spear, he spotted a GIANT lion watching the Zebra and he knew if he went for his spear, the lion would eat him. So having lost his weapon, and being too ashamed to head home empty handed, he just sat there, in shame, for hundreds or thousands of years.
The same stars that make up the spear he threw, in other mythos is called Orion's sword.
The main star in the Lions formation is called Beetlejuice. (and I think... don't quote me here... But I believe 2 other stars in that formation are Sirius and Regulus... or is it Rigel)
The hunter who failed the hunt, lost his spear, and gave up in shame is named Aldebaran.
(I also believe that the Pleadese star system (Pleadese translates to Subaru in Japanese) was once 1 star that exploded. It scattered 15 or so smaller stars which make up the Pleadese star system. Only 7 of those stars are visible with the naked eye from earth though. and the 7th was flung with such force from the explosion that it has escaped the Pleadese star system, and is constantly moving away from it. Subaru the car company chose the 6 stars enclosed in a circle for its logo, because its made up of 6 smaller companies and "they are all stronger together." The 7th star that was flung away from the Subaru star cluster is named Aldebaran.)

I think al and subaru are supposed to be the "hero", but they know they can't live up to the identity everyone including themselves think they should be. Rezero is a story about love, identity and subverting fate. Lots of characters in re zero feel stuck or trapped in their fates/roles, yet subaru made people like emilia, beako, rem and others can still change or grow past their "established" roles
I actually thought your theory could’ve worked. Maybe Al has went to the end of the story and once he failed he got sent to reexperience everything and this time he knew and didn’t lose more limbs. Now that Subaru was summoned to world after Al failed, he will rewrite history, the fate the observers had wrote and he saved Ram, he met echidna and experienced the trial in the pledias watchtower, hence why he didn’t go because he was the one to face Capella because maybe she wasn’t there the original loop because her “kids” weren’t forced to play a role by Roswaal to test Subaru since he wasn’t a factor originally. Emilia never succeeded in her trial because Subaru wasn’t present and Roswaal used her to pursue his love for Echidna. She leaves the royal selection and ultimately Priscilla wins because of Al’s actions being able to overcome but ultimately fail in saving Satella at the end. Plays into the future that Emilia never got to see because she could never pass the trial and so maybe Ram or someone else passes it. Otto has no role because Subaru brought him up. Rem was never a person in the original loop because the observers never conceived her in the Al loop and so Ram had 2 horns and only one was cut during, still leaving her at an disadvantage which will lead to her demise.
