    One point for spotter arms is you can set up for bench press outside and squat inside without have to move your bench.

    I've got all 3 types and agree with your reasoning. I almost never use pin and pipe since getting the others. Straps inside rack. Spotter arms outside. I often have stations set up for different lifts and having options lets me go between lifts quickly without having to dramatically change weight on the bar (squats and bench for example).

    Use those straps for hiabs and cranes for lifting tons of iron when rigging. Those straps shown looks like at least 3 tons. So your definitely safe. The stitch lines on them represents 1 ton per line.

    I was hoping you'd show for bench press also. I'd imagine the sag would make it hard to set the straps up out of your way yet high enough to spot that lift. I'm curious if others have experience with that?

      there is a learning curve to figure out where flat/incline bench needs to be setup using the straps, since they cant be put on the same hole... I personally label which ones are used on the front and the back and reference a little chart on the white erase board

    Very nice comparison/demonstration. But to be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone use safety spotter arms inside a full rack. They are normally used on squat stands and half racks. I usually use flip down safeties in full racks.

    I've done something I haven't seen anywhere else, which is I've taken a pair of the spud inc mono strap safeties and suspended them from the upper crossmembers with shackles and hitch pins. This way they're not taking up any space on the uprights so they're not in the way of other attachments, you can push them aside to walk through your rack, and they're easy to remove. The mono straps aren't as beefy as the strap safeties but they're rated beyond 1000 lbs and I've failed 500lb squats on them and they haven't budged. The length of the mono straps happened to be perfect for me, but you may have to add some chain links to get them dialed in if you need them lower, or loop them in on themselves or change the position of the shackle to get them higher, if that makes sense.

    For the pin pipes, which I have from rogue, go to Home Depot and buy the braided vinyl tubes with an ID of 2” the same as the pipe. They slide right over and deaden the sound and protect the bar. They cost me $10x2.
    My problem and why I avoided straps is that they have slack in them and it seemed like it would get in the way of bench press j hooks.

    • @neilpollack3514
      @neilpollack3514 3 роки тому +1

      I’ve heard people with those straps put one end under the j-hooks and raise the other end (by their fee) higher. They don’t have to be set at the same height.

      @@driver9337 Idk I just like the straps more. Easier on the barbell. And I am limited on space so it's hard keeping them out of the way but convenient to grab. I mostly just use the spotter arms honestly since my rack is 30" and there's like 6" of gap, unless I'm maxing.

    There’s a video of a guy dropping heavy weight from a very high height onto the straps. Their way tougher than you might think. From the height that he dropped it, he would’ve had to replace them, but it did stop the bar.

    Those yellow suspension straps you seen in powerlifting competitions are good. They are from Spud Inc. They are much faster to adjust than any of the ones you mentioned. Just make sure you use them directly underneath where you hang them from. You don’t want a 500 pound wrecking ball swinging around your rack after you bail. That’s why they are ideal for monolifts.

    Great video! Interesting story, one time I was taking the pin out of the pipe safety and just the weight of the pipe re-tore my bicep and it’s now detached from the shoulder. It was just holding on by a thread prior to that but odd that the pipe weight snapped it off. Just one of those weird things I guess.

      The same thing happened to one of my right upper biceps tendons. I was doing a set of very light weight dumbbell lateral shoulder raises when suddenly I heard a loud snap in my shoulder. I felt it too, but with no pain at all. I suppose it was the result of the wear and tear of about 35 years of regular weight training, but it shocked me that it happened that way.

    Can I get your thoughts about buying the spotter arms instead of the shrimp trawler, attaching the rogue shackle and hanging a 100lb punching bag. Seems like it would work but I’m worried it might make clanging sounds as I punch the bag. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

    • @CurlsintheRack
      @CurlsintheRack  3 роки тому

      I think it would work just fine, the spotter will be pinned in and if you throw some electrical take on the inside where it touches the upright (which I recommend for all rack attachments) there will be little to no play/noise..... that being said putting up a 100lb bag and taking it down when I needed to use the spotters would annoy me.... hope that helps!

  • @biknjak
    @biknjak Рік тому

    Does the pipe add any strength capacity to the pin and pipe setup, or could you substitute it with a ABS/PVC pipe to protect the bar and cut the noise?

    • @aba192
      @aba192 6 місяців тому

      It makes or breaks the system…. If you just use the 5/8 pin it would bend badly, but the metal pipe is so thick that it distributes the force towards the portion of the rods that are wedged into the 3x3 so in that capacity they have basically no moment arm and as such much much more shear strengtth

      If he covered this and I missed it I apologize. But I don't think he mentioned the specific advantage of the safety strap. In bench you offset the strap. So the height is higher at the head and lower at the waist creating an arc. So when you fail a lift the bar rolls on the strap away from the face.
