- Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Chris Shiflett joins us to discuss whether music can be objectively bad, why you ought never foist your preferences on your children, how surf videos of the early 90s led to his role with The Foo Fighters, and how family life has kept him grounded amidst the centrifuge of rock star vice.

I love Shifty.
His emotions talking about T are real and understandable.
Chris is the man. Sending love and good vibes to him
Love to Chris. He’s clearly still struggling. 💜
This was tough to hear Chris become emotional about Taylor but on the other hand it was good to hear him speak his name . My heart goes out to all the band .
Me too I can imagine Taylor jamming with Kurt Cobain and Darby Crash.
Gaaaaaayyyyyyyy
Wow, you can see how the feelings for Taylor's loss are right there for Chris just by mentioning his name..so sad. These guys played together for so long and when you are in a band, there is a fellowship, it's like going to war in a way and you get so close to your other band members. I feel so bad for everyone in the Foo Fighters. Terrible loss, I still find it hard to believe that Taylor is gone. It just doesn't seem right. I wish the best for the Foo but I know they are going to feel a huge loss in their lives for a LONG time!
The host is really respectful of Chris.
Thanks, Lorenz. It's easy work with people like Chris.
Chris' voice is so calming
Great interview, very well done. Love and hugs to Chris!
LOVE THIS GUY
Great interview. Touching to see him get so emotional about Taylor. The loss is still so raw. What a sweet and down to earth normal guy. ❤️
Thank you, Cindy. And yes, Chris is salt of the earth!
Super classy host. The way you gave Chris time to handle his very raw emotions about Taylor, was done with compassion and respect. Great interview. Love and healing thoughts to Chris, and the entire Foo Family. 💙
Thank you, Janice. Much love.
Wow I listened to this when it first came out, but the reality of how emotional he was didn't come through without the video (very good editing). My heart breaks all over again.
This is an EXCELLENT interview! Thank you for being so down to earth with it! Mr. Shifflett is the first Foo Fighter I have seen to mention aloud the loss of our fabulous T. Still raw for us too. Thanks for the insights into your life Mr. Shifflett. I will see you in LA!! Big big big hug... Much love! Old Black Lady Rocker.🥰🥰🥰🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
Thank you, CL G. Enjoy the LA show!
This host was wonderful. So respectful and patient with Chris. Clearly this is tough for the guys to move forward yet.
Very kind, Shirley. Thank you.
What a beautiful, interesting and relaxed camaraderie that lended an outstanding interview. I've always loved Shifty and this detailed glimpse into his other facets was so well done! (Without saying too much .. hearing one of our boys say it outloud was more than my own heart could bear) but.. I'm so warmed to see the pause and ease back Into a continuance. Love to my Foos and congrats to our Host on his newborn.
Thank you, Lisa. Much love.
Gaaaaaayyyyyyy
Gonna second all that.
Thank you for conducting the interview. I look forward to seeing if he will tour some of his music
Been dying to catch his solo shows for about 15+ years.
Since his days of Jackson United... 🤟
Please send much love to him, the family and the band family, from a few more of his fans in the UK, xxx
Love Chris Shiflett! Always thought and still think he’s the coolest. Came to know of him from his No Use For A Name days. It was great to have them recognised in this interview.
32:42 😢
Gaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy
Such a great interview, thank you!
Really great interview. Not sure if these guys already know each other, but the host clearly did his homework. Just felt more personable than some interviews you hear these days.
Thank you, Joshua. Chris and I hadn't met in person before but our backstories have some overlap. I provide a little more context in the audio version of the podcast: surfsplendorpodcast.com/422-chris-shiflett-of-the-foo-fighters/
Chris is such a great dude
Salt of the earth!
Thank you so much, David, for an outstanding and respectful and super interesting interview with Chris. I adore him as an interviewer on "Walking the Floor" for the very same attributes that you showed in interviewing him. Thoroughly enjoyed this entire interview and thank you for capturing exactly why we love Chris Shiflett.
That's very kind. Thank you, Pat. I'm grateful to be able to do the work.
Great interview Shifty. It's been a tough couple of years. It's awesome to see you bringing out some new music
Thanks! The new music is great, too.
I totally relate to everything Chris said in this interview. I’d love to sit down and have a beer with him
I've just discovered this and plan to finish watching it later after work. I don't want to distract from the sad passing of Taylor RIP, however please could I also suggest that if people haven't done so already that they check out the music of Tony Sly. He was the lead singer of No Use For a Name, the punk band that Chris was in prior to joining Foo Fighters. Sadly Tony also passed away at too young. Tony's music (NUFAN) and solo was epic and definitely worthy of your time.
What a lovely, lovely interview. So interesting to listen to, and so much information learned, but you could just be a couple of friends chatting over a beer. Or a coffee. You are super professional AND seem genuinely interested in what Chris has to say, and Chris is an absolute sweetheart. And going off script, or in this case straying far from your notes, is surely a sign of a good interview! Thank you for sharing.
That's very kind. Thank you, Christina.
Not a surfer but a FF fan; talking about second guessing your parenting, as a Gen Xer I felt that. Joan Jett I love rock n roll was my first 45. Looking forward to see you rock out more Chris. Great chat.
beautiful, respectful interview. Was a joy to watch!
Thank you, MZ.
Chris is a legend a good guy. I hope they are all doing good now.
great interview!
Thank you, Ryan.
Thanks for the interview - well done. I always wondered why Chris/Pat/Raffi would rarely talk in FF interview.
Understandable emotions are raw - FF were not just a band - they are brothers - they are family
Thank you. I appreciate the kind words.
love ya chris x
Great podcast
Thank you!
I grew up on Long Island and we would boogie board cause the waves were shite. Especially at Crapaway , our nickname for Rockaway . Lol
I KNEW, before he said it... "WASP - F**k like a Beast". I KNEW it. And I still have the 12 inch single. Don't ask....
There's definitely an irony talking to a Foo Fighter about how music becomes crap once it gets really popular
Nah, they were always great.
Luckily, The Foos are one of the bands that don't really take the popularity bit so seriously. They're obviously serious about their music, because it's pretty well crafted, produced and recorded (they have the sauce to make hits, and you don't have that if you're shit). but the fame and notoriety is a side attraction, it pays the bills the machine needs to pay, keeps the employees in work and feeding their families. Plus, they pay their taxes....
