    This about brought me to tears. I remember going to those types of hotels as a kid in the eighties. Looking over the upstairs balcony at night with all the lights was amazing. I miss those days. God the nostalgia. Awesome job man and keep up the good work!

      Yes i feel the same way as you to be honest, looking at all these abandoned places that were once a healthy and thriving concern and a place for people & families to enjoy just being dumped and left to rot away into the passages of time, this is a very bad sign of not only places & buildings being abandoned and left to rot away but the fabric of society and the human race as we know it the world over and that is truly TRAGIC! on a MONUMENTAL! scale 😩😩😩😩😩😩😩

    I used to pick up the swimming pool samples here weekly for lab testing. The pool was shut down for close to six months after a man was found dead in the pool one morning, I believe he passed out and drowned. After they reopened the pool one morning when I stopped in to pick up the sample there was a biker lady od'ed on something laying on a beach chair. Two biker guys came in and literally dragged her away! One of the seediest chain motels I ever had the misfortune to have to stop at!

    my family used2 love goin2 "holidome" atrium type places when i was young - circa late 70s thru 80s. we wouldnt even leave the hotel. mini golf, pool, billiards, ping pong, foosball, & of course, pac man & centipede, or maybe some table top asteroids or donkey kong...i remember watching michael Jackson's thriller video (back when MTV played music) 4the 1st time in one of these places, the entire packed atrium ran2 there rooms 2 watch it, kids were screaming it was on... talk about the good ole days, miss this type of thing, extremely nostalgic rite now, jesus - I'm literally almost crying.

      Yes. They were mini-resorts unto themselves. My wife and I were in our early twenties when we found the Sheraton in Danville, Pennsylvania. In 1978 the structure was less than five years old and everything was in top condition. I remember the first time we stayed there in July of '78 we hurried to get settled in our room and then change into our bathing suits. The roof was open about halfway and when we were floating on our backs looking up there were a few clouds in an otherwise clear blue sky. I can actually recall that moment as I think of it now.

    9:19 is the tv relaxing room...where tv's gather to get away from people for a while, to sit back and not be constantly stared at. This was a 'special' night for the tv's where finally they could spend time without drinks, food and humans forever. The Guest speaker on this occasion told the audience to keep quiet as the uninvited intruder passed by with his camera.

    Fascinating video.
    I'm amazed that the business & property owners just left everything behind like that. Just all of it. Typically when companies go out of business or close down locations they liquidate all their assets. But this is like some post-apocalypse movie where everyone just vanished and everything else is left as it was the moment the disaster struck. Creepy.

      Exactly, i am sure with the proper manage ment and the addition of some wind turbines and solar panels and batterypacks and rain catchment for water one could cut the cost of running a place like this way way down and thus make it more doable to mildly renovate into homeless, handicapped and verteran housing that could make it, and as i pointed out above at over 200 rooms from the looks of it most anyone could afford 200 a mnth rent for life and fifty a mnth for all maintenance anywhere on premises then homeless have somewhere can aford even if working part time, as well as vets and retired disabled folk plus that atrium would give them a place to socialize and have fun!!! And The Maint savings could go for roof leaks heat and air replacement, pavement, pool, etc!!!!

    • @jameybrandon965
      @jameybrandon965 6 років тому +5

      Trust me . If I had the money to do something like that I would I a second. Could charge a low low rate. And have mandatory drug testing..use the the conference rooms for group get togethers like aa and other group therapy. Have a shuttle available or two, to get tenants to the VA or clinic, grocery store, and other things . Maybe contact local sit down restaurants and instead of them throwing their food away, donate it to the shelter at night to be set up on an open buffet .donate any space available like extra rooms or conference rooms to be used as headquarters for veterans charities , have some kind of support set up for depression or suicide prevention, but at the same time don't force any service on anyone. I don't know how I would do it , and I'm sure I couldn't do it alone, but I'm sure I could get it done and make some kind of difference. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this. Maybe someday we could all put our heads together and come up with a plan.

    • @ablemagawitch

      Flat roof designs(cheap and such overall but with up keep the costs a less than a slopped roof. Add to that they have drains that get clogged. So standing water adding hundred of pounds of weight pushing down on structure weakening it. Every picked up a bunch 5 gallon bucket with few inches of water on it? Imagine that spread out and multiplied across the distance of the support beams, now add the weight of the tar and gravel which is usually built up and not stripped when a leak repair and/or maintence cycle happens.
      The basic build up of materiel is tar and rock which seeps after it has "cooled & dried" from the heat, think slow molasses level but once water has a path, it will use it. The ""hyrdo-lic"" (sic) force is amazing. It seeps in and the rooms and building . The ones that have no air flow, get double hit with humidity water/moisture when it condenses when temperature cools to dew points. Adding to the dampness which starts the growth of mold which holds moisture and so the cycle gets worse and those spores move around and settle elsewhere. Starting new colonies.... Notice the mold was out of the most sunlit and open air areas? The stagnant algae in water lowest point collecting pool being the exception...... The pool is also deeper in the ground which is is a cooler surface temperature due to the earth and more physics which are longer to explain. This is already a novel length reply in today's world, sadly.
      Props to @RNK +RNK for a great video and so details. Being an old Urban X the days of needing to protect such places by not menting them has gone . Since most can be searched amd the local kids who would vandalize it is already known spot. People scattered around the area that would drive there, are more likily to take photos than anything else. Although the risk of exploring abandon places both urban and rural is an issue that will continue to plague us sharing our hobby. No pun intended.

    I'm a GM for a major hotel chain, if the building is old, there comes a time were upkeep vs profit is not worth the cost, sad! Great explore!

    • @chconnol
      @chconnol 6 років тому +9

      That's a big issue with any real estate and it's because of accounting laws. In a brand new facility, the costs can be depreciated over a number of years (usually between 10 and 15 years). But maintenance costs can not be depreciated. Those costs hit the books as expenses in the year they are incurred. This makes companies hesitant to do major repairs because they are expensive but cannot be depreciated. I think the accounting laws should be changed so that maintenance of certain kinds can be depreciated. You'd see a lot more places like this hotel lasting longer. It's such a waste.

    • @billybassman21
      @billybassman21 6 років тому +9

      It comes down to poor management that doesn't address maintenance issues right away. I saw it at stores when I was a manager at Taco Bell years ago. One store I took over was only a year older than the store I came from, but looked 15 year older due to it not being properly cleaned and maintained. The managers just didn't do their jobs. I spent over 10 grand fixing the store up. After I left the next manager ran it into the ground where they had to gut the whole place about 10 years later.
      There is no excuse to just walk away from a place like this hotel. Instead you make enough repairs to sell it and if you're doing repairs as you go along you won't need to spend a bunch of money. There is a motel here in Houston on the northside called Gulf Wind. It has been there since the 1940s, even though the area is rough now and has been for a number of years, it is still in business. Down the street there is another motel that has been there since 1980, it has changed names several times, but is still in business. Sadly they both will probably be closing and be demolished in a couple of years due to the freeway being expanded.
      BTW I just put a new roof on my house too. My house was built in 1984 and is in good shape, because I maintain it.

    • @pokemonhunter9409
      @pokemonhunter9409 6 років тому +6

      billybassman21 I agree to a extent.... Let's say though... This place was in business for 15 years, a brand new more modern resort opens up 5 miles away, your occupancy drops from 90% to 30%, you now don't have the budget to run the place, let alone remodel. I swear no offense indented, but a resort like this is a bit more expensive than gutting a Taco Bell, or a single family home. 10g would not have even done the lobby, or just the bar, or more than 10 rooms, or even just the TV's that were piled up! I know, just dumped 1.5 mil into my hotel a year ago, (only 125 rooms) and didn't even replace all the furniture like night stands and credenzas! 2 years ago the pool and deck was almost 20g. I do understand your point though, just a lot of factors neither of us know, but I can promise you, if revenue dropped at a TB like that, it would be a Filibertos a year later! :)

    • @jameybaxter
      @jameybaxter 6 років тому +2

      chconnol that makes ZERO sense. Companies want depreciation because it is a "fake" expense along with amortization. Maintenance is an actual cost. It is charged to the books in the year it was done. It is usually unexpected and very expensive to do those major repairs, often more that the original cost, and when it goes unplanned for, the cash flow can't support it.

    As a few others have mentioned, I think this was originally a Sheraton Inn. Ironically, we have one that is almost identical sitting abandoned in Evansville IN. The exterior is slightly different from a remodel in the late 1990's but our hotel started out as a Sheraton -->to a Ramada Inn-->to a Holiday Inn-->to a Clarion Hotel. It closed up on Dec 26th, 2014 with absolutely no warning. It too sat with all of its contents inside all the way down to dishes on the restaurant table. The pool atrium at this particular hotel was really cool. The hotel still stands today and has since been emptied of its belongings but the hotel itself remains in really good condition for a property that has been sitting abandoned for a few years now. I have been told that the franchisee that owned it simply ran out of money and could no longer afford to operate the hotel. Might be something similar to what happed to the Days Inn here in this video.

      Now that would, should be one then we have all been fussing about!! It should be turned into facilities, mico apt. For homeless, disabled and vets who cannot afford a lot but would stay somewhere if it didnt cost a lot!!! And i was saying they could charge $100-$200 a mnth for life pluss a $50 a month fee for maintenance and put in some wind turbines, solar panels ion lythium battery packs and rain catchment to help offset the utilities and make it off grid or self sufficient, except for sewage and could turn some of the atrium into garden beds or aquponics gardening and rasing fish, raise some chichens and ducks out back of the property as well and you'd have a whole self sufficient little community would need much help from no one!!!

      @@theducklinghomesteadandgar6639 As of November 2020 the former hotel I mentioned back in 2017 is still standing abandoned. Nothing has been done to it and sadly the exterior is starting to show the near six years of abandonment/neglect. I can only wonder how the inside is holding up with the "holidome" style roof over the pool and the flat roofs over the main structure and room wings.

    Only 4 years?! That looks like it was abandoned for at least 10 years, maybe even 20 years with the looks of some of the rooms.
    It must be from all the heat and moisture that's rotting it so fast. Seems like there's no salvaging and would have to be demolished.
    Some parts of the really decayed areas look like something I would see in a Silent Hill game.

    For those interested, you can see an identical hotel that is still in operation if you search Clarion hotel, New Cumberland, PA. These were built by Sheraton in the early 1970s. This one in New Cumberland became a Holiday Inn in the 1990s, and then a Days Inn some time in the 2000s, and now Clarion. I remember it still had the 1970s look the last time I stayed there in 2002, but now appears to have some updated paint in the neutral tones. Interesting to see a sister hotel abandoned.

      Heel Charisma maybe, but has she donated a hotel? If not, then she has no right to criticise the hotel owner.

      No, they don't need the health problems of black mold. Serious stuff.

    It's amazing how table cards and condiment stations are still filled up, beds are still made, pillows are fluffed up. It's like they bailed in the middle of a work day.
    To think that someone made that bed, fluffed those pillows, but they would never be slept in, but would just sit there years untouched.

      Yes! We stayed at the Holidome in Navarre Beach, Florida many times. As Robb said, although it was closed in, on a beautiful beach, there was a strong natural attractiveness to the atrium setting. Much of Jaws2 (easily forgettable) was filmed there. Hurricane Katrina ruined it.

    Very Beautiful Hotel.When it was in Operation.Now its just plain trashed,with all the furnishings and things still there.I am glad u went there by yourself,it makes you Brave and not scared to go alone.Whenever you feel like you just need some time alone investigating places.I would do the same thing,if there were places like that where I live.Keep up the good work.😄

    This looks like a particularly creepy example of how quickly things go to waste if not maintained. However after doing some research I found that this hotel must have been pretty run-down already before it closed and the roof was probably already leaking. There seem to have been a lot of complaints because of mold, cleanliness issues, the pool that hadn't been open in a long time etc. My best guess is that when Sheraton sold it it was already in need of work and below their standards and then as a Days Inn it was just run into the ground and closed when it became unbearable. Sad, must have been a nice place once.
    You showed that room filled with TVs, there are other things stacked elsewhere in the building like mirrors, paintings, lamps and mattresses. I think none of those things are of worth but still they might have ramassed them because someone thought about using them elsewhere or selling them. However some of the rooms still have their paintings etc. so it's still strange. Can't really imagine they thought about putting in flatscreens because if my theory is correct they must have known that the hotel's days were numbered. Some parts of it - i.e. the breakfast area and the rooms you showed where the beds were made - look as if everybody just left one day within a minute. Does anyone know facts?

      It really is creepy! Almost like a natural or nuclear disaster evacuation, where no one returned. If it was black mold THEN, shouldn't there have been actions taken to raze the building and disinfect? I don't want to speculate about corporate tax write-offs and the like, but geez. I just think of all the employees. What were they told? BOOM, you're laid off, thanks, goodbye. Oh, to know all the backstories on this!
