I had someone comment on one of my videos saying that the video that they watched was not click baity. If you'd like to see whether that's true or not, you can.
The wife and I stayed here one night in 2007 while we were traveling through from Texas. This hotel was why we have never been back to Alabama. We actually stayed in one of those rooms, possibly the one that was so bad at 11:18 in your video. Our room was definitely right in that area on the first floor. When we stayed there we had to move all of the tables and chairs in front of the door because there was so much fighting and gun shots going off all around us outside. We left early af in the morning. No surprise this place is abandoned. Thanks for doing this video...it's given us closure..lol
I stayed there while on a roadtrip with some friends in late 2014 and it definitely wasn't much better. It was the sketchiest hotel I have ever stayed at and we didn't even stay the night! In the probably three hours we were there, we saw squatters having a bonfire party in front of the burned down part of the building facing the road (which was lined with tens of disgusting mattress), heard multiple gunshots, and found more bedbugs than I'd care to see in a lifetime. We opted to just drive through the night to Atlanta even though we had just come from a concert. Didn't even walk to the front desk to check out early, just walked straight to the car and got the hell out of there.

The property was built around 1960 as a Ramada Inn and remained under the Ramada brand until around 1990. The University of Alabama football team use to play 4 to 5 home games at Legion Field in Birmingham. This was the hotel that Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant (and later Ray Perkins) used to house their teams when playing in Birmingham. It was a very nice property (and area) until the mid to late 80's. The ball room and facilities hosted many local proms, sports award banquets, beauty contests, etc. As you guys experienced, it's not any place you'd want to be now.
What's interesting to note on some of these abandoned sites is that they tend to fall in one of two categories: planned shutdown, place bare, stuff removed; and places where it looks like an owner or boss called one day and told the staff "were closed permanently as of right now, everyone is unemployed, go home immediately", and that's what those offices look like - cleaning cart in the hall, papers on desks, and one day, everyone just...left.
It amazes me how quickly buildings start to decay once they're abandoned. This place was running just 4 years ago yet it looks like it's been abandoned since the late 90s.
I was thinking the same thing. Alabama does get some really nasty severe weather though, so I’m thinking it’s possible that a bad storm or two came through and caused some damage. That, combined with the multiple fires, could be why it’s gotten this way in only 4 years. Plus, it sounds like the building was already in a decaying state by the early 2010s while it was still operating.
0:45 Ongoing maintenance of flat, membrane roofs is critical. Mechanically induced air movement and filtration of closed structures is important. If not maintained, cleaned, and occupied, buildings die. Nothing lasts in this world.
Oh wow that's pretty good I thought the music was still playing from the hotel.. I was thinking in my head that would be kind of weird and it would be scary at night hearing it while being there.
In an article I found online the place caught fire again on June 18th 2019, and the cause is still under investigation. My best guess as with most of these places that catch fire is a result of transients trying to stay warm/dry, especially with the broken windows letting in air at night. The damage on the insides of some of the rooms and main center appear to be storm damage and water leakage. Alabama does have hurricanes and tropical storms that can do some serious exterior damage with right amount of wind. But that’s just my thoughts! Great location!
I stayed in Days Inn once. It was a “no smoking” inn, yet it reeked of smoke. The air conditioning was broken and it sounded like water whirring inside. It was also kind of sketchy.

The roof was probably in disrepair for years before it closed. But I bet it was still kept together with tar and basic cheap repairs. So when the cheapest repairs stopped, it fell apart, fast. Unfortunately ceilings are absolute killers. It's why dying malls have buckets everywhere- no bank will loan the funds to fix or redo it, and without that fix, boom. Falls right apart, especially if it's a humid area. Edit: after seeing the room at 11:25, I really have to guess the place was just doing surface fixes but mold and mildew were rampant for years, which is why it pretty much peeled from the studs. (That and the fire, maybe? Though there doesnt seem to be smoke damage.) A roof should be replaced every 20 years but I'd bet my money it was never replaced in the 40+ it operated.
It gets really humid in the Deep South, especially during the summer. My guess is once the property was vacated and the air conditioning unit no longer regulated the internal humidity conditions, things quickly deteriorated. The roof tiles and walls are filled with insulation material that gets soggy and heavy under such conditions. Over time, the strength of fibers erode away. Wood also often rots quickly in such humidity. It’s sad to see a building crumble like this.

As someone who works in the hospitality industry, I have a theory as to why there are so many different hotel brands seen in this video. Judging by the size and the fact it had ballrooms and a lounge, this place most likely started as a Ramada. Eventually the hotel lost the Ramada brand and they downgraded to a Days Inn. Then right before being abandon the Days Inn brand was also taken away and the hotel was split into two different brands Knights Inn and America's Best Value Inn. The many brand changes is common with older hotels especially if they refused/do not have the money to remodel. It's cheaper to for them to downgrade to a different brand and pay for the new signage than spend the money needed to remodel and keep the original brand.
we have an old Days inn where i live that's been abandoned for several years. it's a big one too, with conference rooms, a restaurant, and even a mini golf course inside. i used to work there 15=20 years ago
Really? You think dressers, chairs, and beds flip over and filing cabinets and drawers get emptied with just the passage of time? With the exception of a few rooms (the public side of the lobby, and the lounge), it has obviously been screwed with if not ransacked. It just hasn't been graffitied.
I lived in Bham Al. n was a bus driver there until 2014.I noticed it running down, it's on a big big property.I imagine in the late 1970's it was a nice motel.Nice to see it up close now though...Thanks!
Weird to see such a modern company to have a left a hotel in such disarray, you would think they would have demolished it by now in the state it is in...Great video btw!
Days Inn is part of the Wyndham family of hotels. One trend that's been happening is a lot of the branded hotel chains are doing is telling the owners of these franchised properties is that they are no longer allowed to use the name A lot of them are losing their license to use a branded hotel's name. The reason is because of exterior corridors. The branded hotels over the past few years are going exclusively with interior corridors and owners of exterior corridor properties are being screwed by companies like Choice and Wyndham.
I'm surprised no one tried to buy the property. with a decent loan thay could probably get it up and running again. beautiful property this must have been hit with a ton of unsafe conditions. while under investigation.
Honestly, I forget sometimes that you began this channel as a kid doing urban exploring videos, since you’ve expanded your focus so much in such a short time!
I love this channel so much!! I live in Brimingham and I always think of you when I see an abandoned building! I do feel obligated to mention that this is Bessemer and NOT Birmingham. We have a bad enough reputation already, so hanging on to little wins, lol.
13:33 Cousin Eddie - "Clark I'd like to try to fumigate this here chair it's a good quality item If you don't mind my askin' how much did she set you back?"
You would think that when they closed they would have a auction to sell off as much as possible, donate what if anything is left over and knock the buildings down for safety, maybe donate the buildings to the fire departments for training. What a waste !
When there is no money and the owners are already at a loss, they don’t care. Eventually it is up to the city/state to demolish and they don’t have money to do so. Beyond that, it was a hotel in major decline before it was abandoned, nothing inside was worth anything.
Can you do a Bankrupt or Cancelled video on Stephen Spielberg’s defunct “Amblimation?” It was the animation studio that created the 90’s cult hit Balto as well as an American Tail sequel, but then closed down. Before they shut down, they were planning to create an animated version of the Broadway musical “Cats,” and the concept art looks absolutely stunning. Only recently has “Cats” been picked up by Universal for a movie adaptation. It would be very interesting to dive into the dirty details behind this movie studio and figure out what caused Spielberg to pull the plug. Imagine if Amblimation had become as big of a deal as Pixar and Dreamworks!
>Balto >Cult hit Is it cult in US also those days? Because it failed miserably in cinemas there back in 1995, but here in Russia we were huge fans of Balto.

David You’d better hurry. There won’t be anything left. This place was badly built if it really fell apart so much in four years. Imagine if one of these still in business goes on fire in the ceiling space?
If business was truly that bad, I would not be surprised if some of the rooms had already began their transformation into this mess, and were simply not being sold because there was no need for them.
not that you would ever have a reason to go, but in a tiny town called quinter kansas there is an abandoned motel/restaurant just off the highway. legitimately untouched, looks like the family running it was evicted and everything was left the way it was.
At about 11:15, I first thought Dan was puking. I've watched several of these abandoned videos over three days, but this one takes it to the next level!
Jake, if you fancy a bit of travel, there's another abandoned Days Inn on the north side of Richmond, VA (37.610526 N, -77.4454808 W) which seems eerily similar, and has some interesting architecture. It's in a much more populated area, though, and would be pretty tough to just sneak in and take pictures. I, too, am surprised you haven't come across anyone living in one of these places.
I really wonder sometimes if humanity vanished for 1000 years, what would a traveler from another world think if they stumbled onto this big blue marble we call home. We are not good stewards of what we've been given and someday it's going to bite us very hard in the rear. It's fun to watch but also sad as well. Great Video Jake.

Okay. Your comment just inspired 0 people to do so CONGRATS
@@deaf2819 Not sure what that is supposed to mean, as a former paramedic, and a current health professional, I was commenting on their lack of preparedness. I guess you don't understand the effects of asbestos and black mold on the human body after prolonged exposure? I was not making a judgement about content (obviously I watch this and similar channels) just stating amazement that so few wear protection.
@Wario DS I feel you. I still hold out for the day when people can have a thoughtful, respectful, intelligent, conversation... It's the masochist in me.
@Wario DS you mean you don't have a corral full of unicorns?
@Wario DS I bet the codfish were wearing respirators :-)
Love your explorations, they’re so intriguing to watch and see what you find
Why are you on every UA-cam comment section???
Lucky Lucian I know right!!!
My theory is that since there is no internet in Cuba when he discovered it he just can’t stop using it.
I bet he has 100 tabs on internet explorer open.
Even rats are like, "No thanx I'll live somewhere else?"
That intro was HAUNTING dude. So well done! Keep it up!
Glad you liked it!
@@BrightSunFilms LOVED it. Such a huge fan of your work.
Great channel love bright sun films ... i share this on Facebook so others can see jakes work..... support jake
I think that slide was probably intended for looters to move heavy furniture from upstairs down to the ground floor
I'm loving the background music. It sounds like it's playing through the building speakers.
It gives me a Bioshock feel. Just waiting for a Big Daddy to jump around a corner lol
The before and after pics/footage was great keep that up in future videos
This is about 5 miles from where I grew up and still live .when I was a kid this was our "downtown".. ..my high school had its prom there in in 85.. I'm surprised you didn't run into any real trouble its not a good place to be wondering around .thanks for all the great vids ..keep up the good work but be careful..
In Germany *mostly* 30-40 Years abandoned buildings look like this 😂
we have an old Days inn where i live that's been abandoned for several years. it's a big one too, with conference rooms, a restaurant, and even a mini golf course inside. i used to work there 15=20 years ago
Blows my mind every time I see these that the companies seem to have 0 interest in saving anything from these buildings to use elsewhere...
Jake makes some top quality videos. These are better than your typical Urbex youtubers content.
“This looks like a porn audition office.” Such a perfect and hilarious assessment.
Awesome exploration, It's surprising to see that it wasn't vandalized, it just decaying. Well another fantastic video, Jake. Can't wait for more.
I know right!
You can tell that it has though with all the broken glass and furniture thrown everywhere
Really? You think dressers, chairs, and beds flip over and filing cabinets and drawers get emptied with just the passage of time? With the exception of a few rooms (the public side of the lobby, and the lounge), it has obviously been screwed with if not ransacked. It just hasn't been graffitied.
SO GET THIS- i commented just 2 days ago about it being caught on fire and it was caught on fire AGAIN today at about 6 am. kinda weird!!
It's crazy to think this place was populated with people a mere 5 years ago.
Justin Y. Yeah. Also, hey again! If you reply to me you are a god (like you already are)!

Hotels are franchises. Just like a McDonald’s. An individual or ownership group owns it. Not the corporation.
@@PD-we8vf the race question is what we need
Well it’s Birmingham, AL too, I grew up there, many abandoned buildings. Improvement but still.
I'm surprised no one tried to buy the property. with a decent loan thay could probably get it up and running again. beautiful property
this must have been hit with a ton of unsafe conditions. while under investigation.
It’s nice to have you in Bham! Lots of abandoned places to explore here. Hope y’all had a good time
Honestly, I forget sometimes that you began this channel as a kid doing urban exploring videos, since you’ve expanded your focus so much in such a short time!
I love this channel so much!! I live in Brimingham and I always think of you when I see an abandoned building! I do feel obligated to mention that this is Bessemer and NOT Birmingham. We have a bad enough reputation already, so hanging on to little wins, lol.
If it's in Bessemer I wanna go see it!
Amy-Renee King and per capita the murder rate is not far behind Compton
This channel deserves a million subs!
“Untouched” entire building is destroyed inside lol
Erich Himes that’s probs what they mean ahah untouched by government bodies
Erich Himes untouched by people
Jinwoah no it’s untouched by people
Not many days inn around anymore. Seems like alot of them are shutting down. Omg is that DAN BELL WITH YOU? LOL 😊😊😊
It is Dan. He shared in his FB post pics of this place a few weeks ago.
Over 1700 in the US.
mikeyz mama I have stayed at a few. for the budget travelers.
Who remembers the vibrating beds Days Inn had back in the 70s and 80s?

Cousin Eddie - "Clark I'd like to try to fumigate this here chair it's a good quality item If you don't mind my askin' how much did she set you back?"
I respect this channel so much and I’m glad I subscribed earlier this year!
A great high quality video, as always! Thank you!
Beyond that, it was a hotel in major decline before it was abandoned, nothing inside was worth anything.
it would be an awesome airsoft venue.
I can't wait for the day when there is a vagrant living in one of these places. He shows up and yells "Jake! Dan!" and begins like an impromptu tour
Hilarious! One day.
Joshua Ayres Dan hasn’t had the best experiences with homeless/vagrants
@@RUSTYCHEVYTRUCK MTV Cribs: Abandoned.
Very cool as always, love your videos!
I love your videos! Keep on exploring where I can't!
When that “keep on the sunny side of life” sing came up, I thought you were using it as your theme song since your name is Bright Sun Films😂😂
Good idea but I don’t think Jake takes requests for videos. At least, I don’t think he does.
Didn't they do Animaniacs?
@@rethablair6902, it was made by Amblin Entertainment - the main company, which is still intact. In cooperation with Warner Bros. Animation, ofc.
>Balto
>Cult hit
Is it cult in US also those days? Because it failed miserably in cinemas there back in 1995, but here in Russia we were huge fans of Balto.
I’m glad that when you visit these places or talk about them, you don’t over exaggerate everything and even tell us detailed facts. Thank you! You need more recognition.🥺
Cleaning crew not doing a good job, 1 star review!!!

@corey Babcock there isn't any good stuff. It's all been contaminated with mold. It probably stinks. 🤭😷
There are ,how they didn't run into anyone ,I don't know ...its a bad side of town...its not Birmingham ,its Bessemer which is very close to shittown ...when my cousin was doing drugs ,he talked about staying there ..
David You’d better hurry. There won’t be anything left. This place was badly built if it really fell apart so much in four years. Imagine if one of these still in business goes on fire in the ceiling space?
Love these videos! Have you ever come face to face with someone? Owner, squatters, police?
You were born to do this man! Love your channel. 👍👍👍🤝
yeah the hotel definitely has a 70's vibe to it, especially with that phone booth.
azn1011 That was Days Inn in general lol
I love it that you and Dan are exploring this together
That seems like a lot of damage for only 4 years.
It's amazing how much dilapidation can happen in four years.
Showing the commercial of the place always gives an Erie vibe.... I like it!
Jakes uploads are the best 👍🏻
At about 11:15, I first thought Dan was puking. I've watched several of these abandoned videos over three days, but this one takes it to the next level!
*sees warnings about the building being unsafe*
Ok, let's go inside!
Love your channel keep up the great work!!
Dan - “this looks like a porn audition office”. Hilarious!! Love when you guys are together. Great vid BSF!! ❤️
Would love a couple of lapel mics so we can hear you guys! The current mic is very grainy. Love the content.
that wooden ramp looked like someone make it to haul all the good stuff outta there into the back of a van and take off
Yet another great explore from BSF, great work Jake keep it up 👊
Bruh this is crazy. My favorite UA-cam channel in my hometown. And that’s Bessemer not Birmingham
My cousin used to live and manage that motel when i was a kid
Oh man, I hope someone rescues that cool old phone booth!
I really wonder sometimes if humanity vanished for 1000 years, what would a traveler from another world think if they stumbled onto this big blue marble we call home. We are not good stewards of what we've been given and someday it's going to bite us very hard in the rear. It's fun to watch but also sad as well. Great Video Jake.
when you walked in at 1:28 that reminds me of Jurassic park the Lost world when nick went into that building
