Great video definitely agree this is way better for reviewing. And I think you hit on a brilliant point of fly rods in the $100 $150 being the work horses of flyfishing. Because the ordinary working man can't really afford the high end rods of $800 and up your spot on there. Really enjoyed your review keep up the great work .
I started fly fishing with a Redington crosswater 4wt combo. I've since added several other fly rods in various weights and last week, the 6wt classic trout. My casting style seems to work best with a moderate action rod. I can afford the nicer brands, and sometimes my ego makes me second guess buying a "budget rod", but it all goes out the window when I'm on the water. Great review!
Yeah budget is the way to go when you can. Check out my sponsor, I’ve been working with Risen fly for a while now and they have a $119 rod that is really really good! Also use my discount code “McFly” at checkout. It will give you 15% off to make it closer to $100. Go to www.risenfly.com and check out what they have. Great quality stuff for a good price.
I have the 8'6" 4 pc 3wt and I love it! doesn't cast too far; but I've caught 3 pound smallies and even half pound tarpon on it so I'm happy with it all around.
Greetings from Canada! I like the new format. Enjoyed the editing and the more concise way of reviewing a rod. I followed your advice earlier and purchased a tfo p2 5wt. Happy so far. The swing weight is a little heavy but for the $$$ its a good rod to fish daily.
Thanks! Yeah the swing weight of almost all rods under $200 is going to be heavy in comparison. Well I take that back, I’ve seen some super light tipped, but they also didn’t have great action. You do get what you pay for, and for under $200, you would be hard pressed to find a better rod I think than the TFO LC P2, or this Redington classic trout. Now if I had another $100 to spend the TFO BVK is a great rod for super fast action. If you want to sling a streamer 100 feet, that’s the rod to do it! Haha
Thanks for another great review. After buying (3) other 4wts from 7'6" to 10', I finally got a 9' 4wt Redington CT. This is the rod I should have started with for trout in WNC and SWVA and crappie and panfish in the SE US. It's not "too" anything (expensive, soft, stiff, specialized, etc.)
I have this rod in several different weights..Love it...Actually caught a 24 inch brown with a 4 wt on the Snake River on the first outing with that rod. Area I was fishing has quite a few stocked 12 to 14 inch rainbows which are a blast on the 4 wt. The big brown kinda surprised me. I was actually using a sink tip line throwing a small semi leech pattern..rod has no problem casting this.......You didn't touch on whether or not there is alignment dots...I have so many rod I can't remember if the Classic does or not....By the way, great review!!
Thanks! You know I can’t off the top of my head remember if it does have the dots or not either. Haha. I never use dots anyway, I look down the rod to see the alignment. So yes, I believe it will have enough power for larger fish, in fact you can catch larger fish with a slow action rod. I might have not spoken correctly, what I meant was that the type of fishing for these big powerful fish is usually large streamer fishing and that (for me) means usually a more fast action rod. Also, you aren’t going to be able to bring the fish in quite as quickly, there just isn’t as much leverage as with a more stiff action rod. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be done. And I will say that would be an awesome fight! Haha
I have this rod in 7 1/2 ft 3 wt and 9 foot 5 weight. I totally agree with your philosophy of use on the 5-6 weight rods. I love my 3 weight for small stream fishing but the 5 weight is too soft for an all around river/lake rod IMO. The 5 weight is really a soft 4 weight and also is somewhat tip heavy. It still feels great with small to mid sized trout on but the shorter version of the rod would be better balanced.
Yeah that was my suspicion with the 5/6 weights of this rod. I figure it would shine as a small creek rod but have some lacking with the large river/lake type fishing. I think thought the 5wt would have its place, maybe for streams with larger trout, that like to only hit small nymphs or dries. That way you can get some good flex in the rod to protect the light tippet, but still have a heavy enough wt rod for the larger fish. Places like the San Juan River come to mind.
Perfect timing on this review. I have a Redington Tempt 2 wt and I've been looking for a moderate/soft 3 wt for stream fishing. I'm going to order one up!
Hey man something i just saw that might help with your reel falling off your classic trout...wrap a rubber band around the threading, it'll keep it from loosening.
Yes absolutely it would. I mean if you have a huge indicator with some tunsten nymphs maybe you might want to step up to the 5wt. But the 4wt would be totally fine. btw, If you want a great priced rod that has a little more backbone, then check out www.risenfly.com genesis rod. It’s like $119 and really really good! My Redington Vice dumps reels too. But it also costs 5 times less than a Sage X and has comparable performance. I just really jam the reel in there to the point it's hard to get off and it stays.
@@McFlyAngler have it combined with a Galvan lt 4wt reel and scientific angler fly line. Tried it out at the parking lot at the store I bought it from and will say it's a step up from my beginner setup! Cant wait to try it on the river this weekend.
A question since you have experience with this brand rod.. I Just ordered a Classic Trout in 8'6" 4wt, would you recommend underlining by a wt due to the medium/moderate action, and also because most lines are 1/2 wt larger now days?
No I wouldn’t, I would say just pick a line that isn’t overly weighted. I know rio really well so I’ll use them as an example. Rio gold would pair perfectly with this in a 4wt. However rio grand is 1/2 weight rating up, so I’d say it would maybe feel a bit too heavy. I actually fish a double taper on all my classic trouts, but that’s because I’m almost exclusively dry fly fishing with them, so it is the perfect line for close range dry fly fishing that I need to roll cast often. However I don’t underline the rods with a double taper, especially since double taper lines are generally already light on the tip. Hope that helps?
I almost bought this rod the other day at Let it Fly, yes we are neighbors lol, I went the the Path package instead. But this is my next rod. They didnt have this in an 8'6 only a 7'5. Hence my decision on the Path, besides that it was a package.
Check out the risen fly genesis 3wt. It’s a really great rod. I think better, and it’s a little less expensive. I’ve been working with them lately and they offer all my subs a discount. Type in McFly at checkout and you will get it for 15% off. Www.risenfly.com
I’ve owned several Redington Trout/Redington Classic, and these rods are just way too soft for me. Beautifully finished and a great looking rod, particularly at its price point.
They are a little on the soft side. However for dry fly fishing I really like a softer rod. If you want something even less expensive but a little more stiff, check out risen fly’s genesis. You can get it in a 3wt-8wt and it has some oomph when casting. Super smooth yet still lots of power. Use my discount code “McFly” on your first order. It’s a great rod.
Both are good. Check out www.risenfly.com and look up the genesis. It’s even less money and I think better than these two rods you mentioned. I can give you my discount code there if it helps. McFly at checkout will get you 15% off. But personally I have cast the carbon and think it’s slightly better than the redington, however I haven’t really fished with the carbon, just casted it. So I can’t say for sure if it’s better than the redington. It did seem a little stiffer to me. And so does the risen genesis. So it will shoot line further if your looking for that.
Redington makes a few less expensive reels. You might want to check those out. I actually am using a cheapo piscifun Reel. Well it’s not all that cheepo, it’s rather nice for $60. Fully machined and has an ok drag. I did a review on it, you can watch it. It’s called the piscifun sword 2
I'm eyeballing the 6 piece versions. Looks like they only come in 3 & 5wts? So the 3wt is my target. Curious if an Orvis Battenkill 3/4 would balance well with it. Long shot since you may not have a Battenkill. Lol
That depends on what your doing with it? Will you mainly be roll casting or will you do a lot of actual casting? Short distance or far distance? Different lines are good for close or far distance, or roll casting and regular casting.
What kind of rod/line combo would you recommend for fishing bigger waters for small/medium size trout? Something i could cast a decent distance but still get a good fight from some modest size trout around 10-12 inches. The rivers i fish have a lot of decent water to cover
I’m getting a rod from risen that I think will work, but I’ve got to fish it first to know for sure. It’s called the 23PS and I’m getting the 4wt, which should be good to fight the fish and feel them, and also cast well.
@@McFlyAngler forgot to mention im looking for something on a budget, preferably in the 150-200 dollar range. guess that was an important piece of info to leave out haha. Ive heard great things about the echo carbon xl and the tfo pro 2
Risen rods are budget rods. The 23ps is their top of the line rod they carry, and it’s $299. But their genesis rod is $99 and it’s good. Go get a 4wt genesis rod from them, use my discount. You will be happy with it
I have a Cheeky Boost 350 in red, and I’m looking for a well balanced rod that would match up good; that won’t break the bank, and is aesthetically pleasing as well, any recommendations?
I mean it really depends on what type of fishing your looking to do. As said in this video, this rod is great for more delicate presentations and fishing with smaller nymphs. If you want a rod to toss streamers than maybe you want something stiffer. Let me know what your looking to do with it.
Try risen fly. They have something called the armor which is pretty good and it’s only $99. I also can offer you a discount. Type in McFly at checkout and you will get 15% off. They also have the LW reel which is great! One of my favorite reels! And it’s not much more expensive. Www.risenfly.com
Well, I would save my money on the reel, as both bluegill and bass dont really take you down to the backing. Spend your money on the fly line and the rod. If you are going to be fishing tree lined river, then something shorter for the rod would be a good bet. Maybe 8' or so. I think the Piscifun Sword 2 ($50) is a decent reel, and will serve you well. I have done a review on it, so check it out. It will save you a lot of money to spend on a rod. For the rod, I think a TFO BVK ($250) in a 5wt will be fine. Its stiff enough to throw larger bass poppers, and light enough to somewhat feel the bluegills. I mean, really you would want a 3wt or so to really fish bluegill properly, but that's not really enough for larger bass poppers. Its kinda a tough one. you know? Two completely different species, hard to name just one rod. But a 5wt probably will be your best bet. If you can double haul really well, maybe a 4wt. Then I would spend some good money on line. Rio makes the "outbound short" which is pricy, but its heavy loaded in the front end, and allows for far distance casts with just one backcast. It also does pretty well with roll casts when you get used to it. Below are some links to purchasing these if you want to check them out. Piscifun Sword 2 - amzn.to/2MlURTP TFO BVK - amzn.to/2ONzyHO Rio In-Touch Outbound Short - amzn.to/2nLNYN3 Total price is $379.99 +Tax on all that.
Well this isn’t what I’d call a streamer rod. It’s moderate to slow action, so it’s not gonna power anything out there well. You can get away with some smaller streamers (wooly buggers and what not) but you might find some difficulties with anything that has dumbbell eyes or a cone head. And anything with some major wind resistance
I have not fished moonshine. I contacted them to do a review once, asked for a discount on a rod or a Leander and they told me no. Sooo I haven’t ever fished them. I will say, the moonshine rods look really nice. They are works of art type thing. I don’t know how their blanks perform though. This redington has probably less “artistic” type components and wrapping, but I know it’s on a solid blank. If you go with the redington, do me a solid and use my link below in the description section. Amazon gives small commissions on things I link to. Another company you might want to check out is risen fly rods. I just started working with them, and they make some nice stuff with lifetime warranty. Good prices also. Their ITB rod has some really nice moderate action to it, and they give all my subs a discount. So with that discount it would be the least expensive rod we have discussed, and it’s very high quality. Type in McFly at checkout to get a discount on anything in their shop. I don’t get commission on the gear bought from them, just really like recommending them to my subs because they get it for super good price you know?
@@McFlyAngler Thanks for the quick reply and help. You Sir got a new Sub and def am looking into purchasing another rod soon, if it is the redington i'll do so through you.
Fantastic rod. I've got the a 3 weight 4 piece 7'6" path and liked it so much I got a second 3 weight, the classic trout 6 piece at 8'. Both have sage spectrum reels on them. The 6 piece has a bit more backbone which allows me to cast a bit farther with less effort, while the 4 piece path is precise for short distance casting and sensitive fishing on small streams for native cutthroat. Either are fantastic backpackers but the 6 piece is a game changer. The main reason I've got two 3-weights is fishing evangelism... I take friends and family out whenever I can to introduce them to my favorite sport, and it's nice to have a quality rod for them to use.
What line are you using on the 8' 3wt? I just picked up a 6pc and I've never owned a 3wt rod before. I was curious what line you were using, and if you like it or not with the CT. Thanks!
Thanks for getting back to me, and all the great vids as well. I was actually leaning toward a DT line for this one. All of my other rods are fast action.
Yeah I love DT for light action rods. Perfect line for roll casting and small stream action. Also, it lasts twice as long because you can simply turn it around when it starts to get mangled.
I’m excited to try it out. All I have right now is a WF4W so I’ll probably give that a shot tomorrow. I usually use a BVK 10’ 4wt which is the lightest rod I have, so I’m expecting a vast difference. Can’t wait to try the DT too though, I’ve always been curious about them. Thanks again for taking the time to reply!
I'm beginning to hear about a lot of warranty breaks on these. Have you heard of any issues like that or have you experienced any? I know about the reel seat issue from watching your vids but nothing about breaks occurring. Thoughts?
I’ve not broken mine. But either way, they have a good warranty. Another company with a really good warranty is risen fly, check them out. Www.risenfly.com. I can let you get a discount also by typing in my discount code for use on their site. It’s “McFly” and it will get you 15% off at their shop.
@@McFlyAngler I appreciate the quick response and the coupon code! I finally found a 380-6 and placed the order so I'm guessing receipt of it this week. Hopefully the breakage issues are from flukes. Like you said, warranty is great so we'll see. Thanks again!✌
For sure man! I think you will like it. The 2wt version of it I had my kid use today, caught some small bass and panfish at the local pond. It’s a good little rod, you will like it.
Nice review. Great rod. I got the 5wt one and love it. Works well on the san juan for what i fish from wolly buggers to tiny nymphs from big fish to small stalkers wet or dry flies it is a great all around rod IMO. If you want a more stiff rod look at the Redington Crosswater and even more stiffness look at the Redington Vice. A rod for every need you my have.
I agree Dan, I think for the San Juan, the 5wt would be perfect! I actually fish a 10' 3wt on the Juan, because I like the long taper into a backbone for protecting the light nymphs. But it gets tiring throwing a 10' rod all day. So, the 4 or 5wt for the Juan of this rod might be perfect. Yes Redington has a ton of really nice rods for the price range they are set at. fast action to slow action, and everything in between.
Awwwww. Hey I finally got a bass on my fly rod. (i'm that guy from texas) I caught a 4.08 pound large mouth on a deer hair diver. Was awesome!! I'm hoping to learn how to tie the manbearpig soon as my vise arrives. I'm certain that big ol boy will catch the big mamacita lurking about the depths.
Yeah man, it looks like a good fly, just for me too much work. I like flies I can tie quickly, with inexpensive materials. SO that way I can fill a box, and when I loose one it doesn't hurt as much. HAHA Congrats on your bass!
Literally just bought and received a 9' 5WT version of this in the mail. I will be using it for nymphs/dry or hopper dropper rigs, primarily on the South Platte. Any fly line recommendations to pair with this rod based on your experience? I was looking at RIO Avid Trout, but I'm not sure...
I have the 5 weight and have cast/fished it quite a bit. Although rated for a no 5 line it is really a 4 weight based on deflection tests I ran and as such casts a 4 weight line, especially a double taper, just fine. I use Scientific Anglers Frequency Trout 5 wt line, which is true to ATMFA standard weight, and it casts great. Most Rio Lines, including Avid, are really 1/2 to a whole ATMFA standards heavier and as such will overload the rod and slow it down to much. LT trout might work. If you are going to use Avid or Mainstream, which are both a full line weight heavy for their rating, I would go with 4 weight line. Rio Gold or SA MPX four weight will cast Ok, but this rod is probably best with a very a line that is true to ATMFA standards or a bit lighter.
Joel Haas thank you man, I have never used scientific anglers line before, but I will give it a shot. It's cheaper than the avid and got good reviews, so I will try it. Thanks for the knowledge!
So Joel is right, a double taper would be great. I think though if you are doing the RIO LT DT (double taper), then stay with the 5wt, but he might be right on a full WF version of a 5wt might collapse the rod a bit too much. Not sure though as I have not tried fishing that weight version. I am happy with my double taper fly line, which I use for the 2wt and 3wt versions of this rod I have. It roll casts nice, and has a really nice delicate lay down for dry flies. And, in a year or two when the line gets pitted or damaged, I can always reverse the line and get a few more years out of the back end! :) Check out RIO's DT line. Its good quality. Expensive, but I think worth it. Here is a link to it if you want to check it out. amzn.to/2Mbqyyg
McFly Angler awesome, thank you as well. I may not be able to afford the LT right now, I spent most of what ive been saving over the summer for the rod and it would take a while to get the rio line as well, so I may stick with the SA line. Thanks for the help though!
SA line is just as expensive I think. There is a $70 double taper by RIO, I’ll look it up and get back to you on that. That’s also an LT, but it’s not the “in touch” version.
Yeah it would, very well... I’ve got the sword 2 3/4 wt on this with a double taper line (usually DT line requires more space to put on reel. ). So i would say if you put a WF 2wt line on that reel it might seem under filled. But that’s not a bad thing
I just purchased a Classic Trout 5wt and when I put the rod together, aligning the little white dots, the guides seem to be slightly off-set/misaligned. Is this intentional? Should I ignore the white dots? Thanks!
I never use white dots on any rod. Lol! But yeah it can happen. It’s not that way on either of mine.. but I’ve seen it misaligned on a few rods from multiple brands
It’s been a while since I made this video, about 5+ years I believe. So I don’t really know honestly, I haven’t fished this rod in a while or looked at the prices, but everything is going up in price, so I am sure this has as well. They are offering all my subs a discount so type in “Mcfly” at checkout
Yes. Big bass might make it difficult with a 3wt but they sell this in larger sizes. The thing is its a moderate action rod, almost slow action. Will be difficult to cast the very large bass flies. Personally I like more stiff action rods for bass. But it will still work.
@@McFlyAngler well I'm just a beginner and am just really wanting a good rod for bass panfish and trout and look up the most versatile Wt and found that a 5 wt would work best so do you think that if I got the rod in a 5 wt then it would be easier to cast.
Yeah a 5wt is a great place to start. Now it will be underpowered for the large bass flies. And it will not give much play for the sunfish. It’s a wide range of different fishing there. It will work and get you catching fish for sure. At one point though you will want to look at getting a 3-4wt for sunfish/small trout. And a 6-7wt for bass/streamer fishing.
Would the 4 weight handle small indicator nymphing?
Yeah totally.
Great video. Who makes the fly boxes with the hook on the cover.
Those were mine, I don’t sell them anymore.
How does the classic trout compare to a echo carbon xl. Wanting to buy one of the two in a 5wt 9ft. Thanks
Good vid 👍🏻
Thank you.
Very good review, thank you. What’s a decent reel to match with that 2wt and 3wt? Thank you.
McFly Angler I will watch it, and thank you, I was looking at that reel. Best.
I'm eyeballing the 6 piece versions. Looks like they only come in 3 & 5wts? So the 3wt is my target. Curious if an Orvis Battenkill 3/4 would balance well with it. Long shot since you may not have a Battenkill. Lol
McFly, what is your recommended line for the 2wt?
That depends on what your doing with it? Will you mainly be roll casting or will you do a lot of actual casting? Short distance or far distance? Different lines are good for close or far distance, or roll casting and regular casting.
Hello, do they still make the 6 piece? thanks
I’m honestly not sure, I imagine they do, but I haven’t looked into it for years. I’ve got a 6 piece of theirs still and it’s great for backpacking
You will be happy with it
My discount code is McFly, it will get you even more off. I actually use their stuff exclusively. So they are great quality, but at a reasonable price
Really a good rod. Durable too.

Ok thanks, i appreciate the response, i really like your channel and subscribed, which i dont do often at all...4 channels total
Oh hey thanks man! Glad you like the channel! :).
@@McFlyAngler
I bought the Classic Trout due to your review, well done.
Thanks man! You will like it
What feel did you put on it? I just got same rod and cannot find a reel in price range
Try risen fly. They have something called the armor which is pretty good and it’s only $99. I also can offer you a discount. Type in McFly at checkout and you will get 15% off. They also have the LW reel which is great! One of my favorite reels! And it’s not much more expensive. Www.risenfly.com
Weird question cant find it online but what the length of the rod tube on the 3wt 6 piece?
I’ll measure tomorrow afternoon remind me if I don’t get back to you.
Ditto on this question!!!
What rod would you recommend for fishing waters in Texas? From Bluegills to smaller Black Bass (Largemouth).
What is your price range?
less than $400 for rod and reel.
Piscifun Sword 2 - amzn.to/2MlURTP
TFO BVK - amzn.to/2ONzyHO
Rio In-Touch Outbound Short - amzn.to/2nLNYN3
Total price is $379.99 +Tax on all that.
Thanks for your help and tight lines.
Would the 9’ 5wt be good for fishing for trout in lakes and occasionally rivers?
Yes, very good for that. As long as your not casting big heavy streamers. And your not going after massive trout.
McFly Angler what do you consider a big streamer?
Well this isn’t what I’d call a streamer rod. It’s moderate to slow action, so it’s not gonna power anything out there well. You can get away with some smaller streamers (wooly buggers and what not) but you might find some difficulties with anything that has dumbbell eyes or a cone head. And anything with some major wind resistance
@@McFlyAngler What about Landlocked Salmon? Would the rod work for them too?
Have u ever fished the moonshine rods? I’m looking at either that or this redington
Welcome, thanks man! Hope whatever rod you choose serves you well.
Very cool man. Yeah good stuff for sure.
What line are you using on the 8' 3wt? I just picked up a 6pc and I've never owned a 3wt rod before. I was curious what line you were using, and if you like it or not with the CT. Thanks!
I was using a double taper line by rio, I’ll look for it
amzn.to/2Vjyx1b
@@McFlyAngler
I appreciate the quick response and the coupon code!
@@McFlyAngler
That's great to read! I'm sure the kids had a blast. You ever try out the Echo Carbon XL? I'm eyeballing the 6wt to complete my quiver.
I don’t think I have. I’ve cast one echo rod, but not sure which it was. I liked it. Crisp.
I think to formatted review is an excellent idea.
thanks!
Man you should do a video tying cohen's manbearpig. That would be alot of fun to watch.
oh man, not my style of fly, just too much going on for that one! HAHA I tend to like the more simple, few material flies.
Awwwww. Hey I finally got a bass on my fly rod. (i'm that guy from texas)
I caught a 4.08 pound large mouth on a deer hair diver.
Great looking rod for that price.
For sure!
Thanks for the great review. I have had a TFO PRO 2 on my mind and was also recommended this rod for bluegill.
Pro 2 is a great rod also! This for bluegill for sure!
@@McFlyAngler the action on it appears to be great for enjoying the fight. Would it pair well with a 3/4 Piscufun sword?
Yeah it would, very well... I’ve got the sword 2 3/4 wt on this with a double taper line (usually DT line requires more space to put on reel. ). So i would say if you put a WF 2wt line on that reel it might seem under filled. But that’s not a bad thing
To avoid reel seat locking nut from loosening, put an O ring slightly smaller in diameter than the reel seat behind the locking nut 👍🏼
Not sure I understand, but yeah.
Blue thread locker right behind the threads on the lock nut……lil bitty drop…..done…..that’z it dude! Now shush ya face and go catch some big unz!
Why this Rod costa 249€ in #5 8'6"??????
It’s been a while since I made this video, about 5+ years I believe. So I don’t really know honestly, I haven’t fished this rod in a while or looked at the prices, but everything is going up in price, so I am sure this has as well. In recent years I’ve been working with and fishing www.risenfly.com rods. Great gear and they have rods still in the $100 range. Check them out. They are offering all my subs a discount so type in “Mcfly” at checkout

Obviously this wasn’t intentional. Weird stitch here….
McFly i have a question that i have not been able to find anywhere but can you use this rod for bass and pan fish
Hey go check out www.risenfly.com. They have some good prices on rods and reels and they are great quality. Lifetime warranties there also, and great customer service.
