- Buckle up, it's a long and chatty bit of fun today! Grab your notebook and paints/colors, and join me in some pleasant mixing experiences, exploring the limits of primary colors with a couple examples. The purpose of this video is also to solidify the studio color notebook, and fun, and YOU as key tools for starting this color theory investigation. There's so much ahead of us to learn!
Corrections:
When I was talking about Quinacridone Red I said, "It's not cyan and it's not fire truck red" but I meant "It's not MAGENTA and it's not fire truck red."
I also kept referring to the raw sienna as "yellow ochre" but finally caught myself at the end. :)
My son & I have loved doing this exercise so much. It felt like we were sat with you. I'm so glad you posted it!!
Oh, this is wonderful to hear, Stacey! I have LOVED seeing the work the two of you have made!!
I love messing around making colour swatches. I try to play like this whenever I buy a new colour. It's magical how the different colours interact and play, especially when you get an unexpected surprise. The first colour wheel you made Anne reminded me of old English paintings, the type you often see in museums. This is a very interesting series of videos Anne. Best wishes...
Always a fun exercise!
If it seems acrylic has dried up into a plug like your phthalo green - if you cut the tail end of the tube open, you likely have lots of perfectly good paint left. If so, it's a good idea to decant into spare jar or even ziploc just to keep the rest of the paint from curing too. Kind of an ugly bandaid but worth it to not have paint go to waste.
It was fun to look at. This kind off things always happen when playing with never used combinations.
@@dienekevugts5572 Color adventures! 😍
Honestly this was fascinating and I found your commentary hilarious as you went along. This certainly shows us that it’s okay to just let go and have fun.
When I was a kid, Crayola magenta and teal were my two favorite colors.
Ooh I love to hear this! Thanks, I'm so glad to hear that it makes a feeling of it being okay to let go.
Also: Wouldn't it be fun to do a survey from everyone to hear their favorite Crayola colors? I loved periwinkle! :)
It was SO inspiring! The suspense kept me on the edge of my chair 😆 It really made me want to grab my paint and play. Loved it ❤
Hahahaha the suspense!!! So glad it made you want to grab&play! I'm sure your paint was very happy to hear it too. :)
Really enjoyed this. You managed to get me excited about making colourwheels :)
To that I say, HECK YEAH. Thanks for saying to, Andrea!
Thank you! I think your color wheels are beautiful and it got my wheels turning,
I love it!! The wheels turning the wheels!! Thank you for watching and wheeling! :)
Thank you so much for the video! I had so much fun playing with colors today. Really looking forward for next week ❤❤
Same here! Thank you for sharing with me, Daria! It makes this whole thing all the richer. "See" you Wednesday! 💖
I laughed many times during this! And even though this video probably wasn’t what you had in mind I actually enjoyed the ease and permission to just play. I just painted along with you which was super fun.
I remember doing color wheels in class and not liking it because the professor wanted perfection and that seemed dumb because if you want that just go look at a book (or now online). It would have been much more interesting to do what we did and just take the three colors and see how they work together. It’s exciting, because who knows!!
I also have been in art classes that required perfection. Sooo stressful. And now I also wonder: why?? Some reasons that come to mind:
1. that's what they were taught when they were in school
2. it's a sign of "discipline" (which to be fair, it is a disciplined approach...it's just not the only kind of discipline available)
3. It's the style/look that the professors or instructors prefer and they are uncomfortable with a more messy-looking approach
Which 3 colors did you wheel this time? I would LOVE to know!
I’m not sure what you mean by bad orange at this point in the video but I think of two possible reasons why the orange that you ended up was ‘bad’.
- If you are referring to it looking somewhat brown I look back to when someone made me notice that brown is just dark orange so I think it’s because the colors you chose to start are too dark, meaning that when you mix them together it becomes brown instead of orange because it can’t get any lighter than the two colors you are mixing.
- if you are referring to it being bad because all those colors look almost the same instead I guess that it may be because the colors you chose for your primaries are “too close together” or something like that so there are not that many shades between them
@@Lagrange00 Haha, I did say "bad" orange, didn't I? I need to watch my casually judgmental yet non-specific language! I just meant (and should have said something more specific like) "orange that looks like citrus or pumpkin"
Thank you for your thoughtful answers! Yes, orange that is darkened with blue or black becomes brown. If you start with a brown as your dark "yellow " you can't ever dial it back to a citrus orange, no matter what red you add!
Thanks for watching!
The problem with the choice of "primaries" was that the outcomes were totally predictable. Still a worthy exercise. If you want wow factor mix together quin magenta and phthalo green and see what happens.
Literally quin magenta and phthalo green blue shade is one of my favorite magic-making duos! When I first mixed them it took me down a DEEEEEEP rabbit hole of research and speculation and experimentation. It was a whole segue in my thesis research a couple years ago! Glad you brought it up, I included the idea as a "Bonus" experiment in this weeks vid, inspired by you!
The people watching these videos are in a complete range of experience, including pre-beginner. I don't want to fast-forward any discovery potential! I also find something new every time I mix colors, even if I've done it 1000 times. Or if not new, then newly appreciated! :)
Thanks so much for being here and contributing to the conversation!

Hi Anne! Thank you so much for doing such a wonderful series of videos and being so generous with your knowledge and experience. I love color and pretty new to the whole subject, so really am grateful. can you please explain how to participate? I tried sending you a palette I did on Instagram, but maybe messed it up somehow?.. I'm terrible at social media stuff 😅
@@darialemeshkin7579 thank you so much for asking this question! I found your message and if you message me again I won't miss it! And thank you for sharing your palette! Do I have your permission to share it next time?♥️
@@annelivingstonart Yes, of course:) Thank you for your reply! 💕
But isn't color mixing with light and with pigment different?
@@rosemarypilgrim4589 Yes, absolutely! Are you talking about my mention of CIE? That table represents primaries for physical materials (pigments, inks, dyes) & human perception . to be honest I need to circle back why they're talking about that if they are the light experts! I just thought that that table was interesting.
In a future video I'm going to do a deep dive about what primary colors really mean, and include the mixing of light in the discussion as well.
