It's the end of Day 3 of ThinkMedia's UA-cam 5 Day 1K Challenge. I come to terms with the fact that it is a solid experience with fantastic info, but also a brilliant commercial for an expensive thing that's hard to resist. I am torn between growing quickly and finding fast success, and growing slowly and finding a more sustainable pace. I think it's best to go the slow route. But it is sooo te...

This is amazing Anne ❤🎉
Thanks for sharing this! Your insight about it not being an art-focused event makes total sense. I’ll keep that in mind if I hear of friends wanting to sell at these types of events! Are you comfortable talking about what happened with your finger injury? I’ve had my fair share of questionable choices that led to terrible finger cuts myself, so I’m always ready with empathy for people in those types of situations!
Haha! Okay, let's see if I can explain what the thing was. I was talking with Sana while trying to take the plastic wrapping off a gift frame, the kind with those flexible metal points on the back that can open and close to hold the print/photo in. You know what I'm talking about? Anyway, being hot and distracted, I think I was trying to use my fingernail to quickly run along the edge of the back of the frame to cut the plastic. One of the points was sticking out, I guess, so the plastic's not the only thing I cut! It was quite impressive, and pressure/gauze/bandaids weren't enough. I had to walk to a nearby drug store to get medical glue, to get the bleeding to stop.TNow I know about medical glue. Cool stuff. This hiccup was earlier in the day, in the cooler hours, and it definitely cut into my potential to connect with people passing by (because I was offsite dealing with this, and when I came back I had to sit and keep my hand elevated for awhile). Anyway, lots of live-and-learn moments! :)
@@annelivingstonart Oh my gosh-I’m SO sorry!! That sounds terrible!!😳😱
I love your honest opinion on how this went for you. It is so nice to see people out and about again. Well done on your growth! The watch hours are killing me over here. Let’s keep at it!
Tracie, I was thinking that, too! SO NICE to see people out and about! I will never take that for granted again! Walking around and seeing everyone just enjoying themselves and living life together was really, really heartwarming. :)
Wow! There were a lot of people! I wish you would have sold more. It’s interesting. I agree with your decision to stick with art based shows in the future. Congrats on your continued channel growth.
Thank you so much, Laura! Did you watch the rest of the challenge? What did you think?
Your booth looked so interesting Anne. Such a shame that you didn't get many customers. They were probably too hot to mooch around and just wanted to drink cold drinks! At least it was an experience and you know not to do it in summer time again. I hope you get some time to put your feet up now! 😄
Thank you, Simone! As a glutton for punishment I'll continue to do summer events (haha), but only art-focused ones! I gathered some ideas this time for keeping the tent cooler, though. That just might be another vid sometime in the near future!
@@annelivingstonart I look forward to watching it! 😄
I'm glad you didn't have any loss, but that's a lot of work! Thanks for the info and for sharing!
Thank you for watching, Misa!! <3
No way! The cottage I was staying in this last week had a painting on the wall titled '50 Shades of Wales'. I took a photo as I really loved the idea & wanted to do something similar. I'd never seen anything like it before! Now you share your lovely Ballard tote bag design & one from my home town of Liverpool! Thank you for adding to my excitement about doing a project in this vibe! I think they are so beautifully charming.
I'm pretty sure that all the enthusiasm & ideas you have for videos along with your beautiful desire to be of service is a winning combination without having to sign up to anything else. Obviously just my lil' opinion & it'll be interesting to see how your thoughts develop on it but It feels like you have your own community growing here. I will give the videos a watch myself though, as I am interested but gut feeling is you're doing amazingly, just keep going sharing your process & wisdom!x
Wow. Stacey, this means so much to me. Thank you for your encouragement!
“So get in on this!!” Made me giggle! Your watch hours are doing great! Trying to work on longer videos myself
Hahahaha! :) Yes, these watch hours! Really motivates me to offer valuable info (or infotainment, haha) in compelling ways! I think you are onto something with offering yoga "classes" as part of your offerings, with your uniquely energizing and fun and positive spirit! Once people get addicted to your yoga sessions they'll keep coming back for more!
Oh gosh. They should have put y’all in the beer garden. Although not great, you seemed upbeat and that’s really what matters. Discouragement for an artist can make life really hard. Your booth looked great and it had so many inviting things! Cheers to artists everywhere getting out there! 😊
Oh man, they TOTALLY should have put arts & crafts in the beer garden, what a fun idea!
I hope the challenge went well? I've been away in Wales so am just catching up with videos, maybe you've said elsewhere how it went. What a beautiful walk you have around you too, thanks for sharing.
Ah! Just found your video about the challenge update!
Thanks for your honest reflections again Anne. I thought your stall looked brilliant x
Thank you, Stacey!
I've also done a farmer's market a couple of times selling my 3 coloring books and a little book on saving the planet 😂 I can relate to your experience! And took a similar lesson away. Your progress toward monetization looking great! Here for art community 🐱
I want to hear/see more about these coloring books! :)
Great fun video, 5:45 am NY time - Sorry your art show wasn't more profitable. Saw cards for $5- Correct? Just bought a crummy Hallmark for about 8, ever think of having a merchandise link? I haven't figured that part out yet, but something like cards are very easy to mail. Congrats again.
That's a really good point about the cards being $5 vs. crummy Hallmark for $8. I usually charge $6 for my cards which is similar to other art-print card prices in boutique shops in my neighborhood. I marked them down to $5 for this event, though I doubt I will do that in the future! Do you mean having a link in my channel to purchase things like cards? That's an interesting idea! I used to have a more robust online shop, but I stopped because it was a lot of work for the amount of organic sales it yielded. But that was for original art, not cards and prints. I should think about this some more.
@@annelivingstonart that is correct. I'd rather buy an artist print card. I'm sure your art followers would also.
I am definitely in the slow and steady category too when it comes to UA-cam Growth. I am still trying to balance making the art and editing the videos but slowly finding my workflow. I am hoping to find other artists to try some UA-cam collabs with. Congrats on more growth for your channel this week! i am sorry the art booth wasn't what you had hoped for.
Yes, workflow is KEY, isn't it? I'm doubling down and trying to figure out systems in order to stop re-inventing the wheel each time! What kind of collabs will you be doing? I don't even know how that kind of thing works.
@@annelivingstonart There are so many ideas for collabs. It can be a pair of artists or a group. I have seen pairs of artists paint a subject/theme or portrait of each other to share on UA-cam. Some artists have shared a canvas around a group( Look at Ten Hundred's biggest UA-cam Art Collab ever). A collab works when a pair or group decides on a topic or art challenge, and then sets a release date for the content. I have been involved in art journal challenges in the past. Some challenges have included weekly prompts. Either you finish 1 piece a week based on the prompt or you are working on one big piece and the prompt inspires the next action you can take in making the piece. Some artists do color challenges or color palette challenges. In another art journal challenge, we were given the same supplies and had to make something with them. The sky is the limit on ideas. The goal of the collab is to create content while also reaching broader audiences. Each participant is introducing the other participants to their audience. If you are interested in trying a collab, let me know.
Well you’re a trooper for sticking it out in the heat. I’m no beer drinker…so I’d definitely spend my time in the art booths. I was just at the Sawdust Festival…annual art event in Southern California. If you’re ever in SoCal in the summer, you should check it out. Congrats on your continued growth! Cheers to community building!❤🎉😊
Ahhh! I used to go to the Sawdust Festival every year as a kid!!!
Okay, WOW. The Sawdust Festival looks positively epic! Will definitely need to add this to the bucket list!
Hello Anne. I felt for you in the heat having attended similar events myself. Your channel is starting to gather momentum. Well done!
Thank you so much, Kay!
Your stall looks gorgeous and vibrant Anne!
I love it!!! I hope the whole weekend went wonderfully!
Brilliant!!
That looks great! It works. Would you share where you get your packaging supplies, the cardboard backing and cello wrapper?
Boom! Perfection!
@@Lifeinthewyldewest BOOOM ⚡️
So satisfying to watch Anne!
Thank you, Simone!♥️
I don’t really “watch” hardly any videos. I just listen to them while driving or editing photos.
I’m Gen Z and I also hate being funneled or upsold on things! I think one thing we might realize as the younger generation/being more familiar with the internet is so much information is available for free! UA-cam, blogs, or even sites with lower subscription costs (like Medium which lets people self publish articles) are a great to learn new skills without being swindled :) also I think we get so lost in the new tech we forget about old ways of learning like checking out classes at the library or asking friends for help!
Rachel, thank you for this perspective! I LOVE to hear you say "nope" to mindlessly throwing money out there into internet abyss. PS I think Gen Z just might be my favorite generation these days. I have a Gen Z teen who often shares insight into the younger Gen Z psyche on a larger scale, and I am often blown away by these insights. Oh, also: I have a Medium account and am planning on publishing there. I already have so much written work to clean up & publish. Also, my IG posts (especially when I was doing deep color research) have historically pushed the limits of the word counts because I kept accidentally trying to write articles in there. hahaha
Look forward to your videos each week! Thanks for sharing! Planning to start my art channel soon and am enjoying the tips of your journey! Hope your festival goes great!
Sara, that is so exciting!!! I hope you'll reach out and let me know when you start your channel so I can follow you and cheer you on! :) And thanks for the kind words!
Great video - very helpful! Why didn’t you use Gamblin cold wax?
Thank you, Shawna! I have tried Gamblin for this, and it has a very subtle granular quality compared to Dorlands, and that granular quality has the potential to disrupt the gouache paint film and cause streaking. At least that's what happened when I tried it. BTW this process works on watercolor, too! One of the artists in my building often mounts his larger watercolors onto wood panel, sprays the watercolor with some kind of fixative(I think), and does the wax treatment using Dorland's. It was exciting to find someone else who discovered this idea!
@@annelivingstonart Thanks Anne for your reply! I would also vote for a video on how to mount a painting onto a wood panel :)
@@shawnamariefranklinart oh yes excellent! Will do!
Anne! This was such a helpful video!! Thank you for sharing. PS I’d love to see a video on how to remove varnish from a varnished painting too!
Ooo I can totally do that! Thanks for the idea, Shawna!
I like the perspective angle and the shadow angle of art piece and how you put the colours together.
Thank you, Eric! Wow, you just described some of my favorite things about making a painting! :) Interesting perspective, shadows making forms, building with color. I appreciate your comment a lot!
Slow and steady. Is it possible to ask think media what’s happens to people that go viral before they are ready?
Oh that would be a fantastic question! I might pose this. Good one!
I’ve considered some classes from think media and I felt the same, like they are making money and there has to be a catch. I’m loving to hear about this while you paint. You sound so much like me! Yes same feelings exactly your speaking my mind. I Follow think media because I do believe they know what they are talking about however shoveling out money that I barely have so somebody else can get wealthy isn’t what I would choose to do. I love what I have seen on your channel so far as a new sub. Your art in itself pulls me in and you tell and explain stories that keep me interested. I believe it will come in time. I’m a big believer in the slow go is the long go and the people who find us slow will be the viewers who actually like to watch our videos and will be sticking around. If that makes sense? I believe putting your resources and money into this event is where it’s at. Also curious how next 2 days go.
I enjoyed this! You brought my attention to the think media challenge, and im sort of auditing it w/o the community boards. But yeah, the funnel 🧿 is intense. Dont worry if you cant swing it this time, they have your contact info 😅 im interested in a mutual aid society thats free or low cost in whcih people help each other grow as creatives and in business. YT monetization would be nice but i dont want to depend on it, so ive started an email list and i set up a website with blog, shop, etc ...~ Nan
YES to email list, website, blog, shop! Yes! I have found good monetary success with all those (except blog, but my long-ago blog existed before blogs were monetized), and love how you own those and have total control over them! Mutual aid society that's free or low cost sounds excellent to me as well! Let's do it! @jackiewolven would be on board too, I think . :)
Hello Anne... It's clever marketing and easy to get sucked in. Fear of loss..! Plus think of the money they are earning just from all the people watching the long daily videos... there is plenty of free information on UA-cam and Ai... You are a new channel, like me, and for what's it's worth, I personally think we can grow with determination and commitment, building our own community... I am enjoying your videos...Thank you for sharing
Thank you, Kay! I must say, your (and others') comments here have really solidified in my mind that not joining that group was the way to go for me. Side note: I will need to work out how to make lots of money while not funneling people somehow. :)
I’ve been watching the challenge along with you. Interested in a comment you left about changing the name of your channel? They’ve spoken a lot about video titles, but not so much about channel titles. What is making you question yours? Love the painting, BTW.
Hi Laura, what did you think about those two women guests in yesterday's stream? I loved some of the things they had to say! Will def watch the replay when it comes out. As for the channel name change consideration: my name across platforms (IG/FB/YT) is Anne Livingston Art, so the consistency is good. But I was just thinking yesterday: My focus here on UA-cam is currently helping other people who want to deepen their relationship with art and/or start a career path in art as a second chapter. But I could only come up with sort of catchy things like "ArtBiz2.0" (now THAT sounds like a channel that knows how to funnel! Hahahaha). Quick & catchy might address the business side of things but might overlook the DEPTH half of my desire for this channel. And also, there is something to be said for having brand recognition across platforms. I think? Anyway, those were some of my thoughts yesterday. Thanks for the kinds words, BTW! :)
@@annelivingstonart Hi Anne! I thought those women were very hard working and smart. They were inspiring, but I'm not certain I am interested in that level of content creation commitment. I want to have a life, too! Regarding the channel title, I have created two channels (both of which have no videos yet). One is titled "Laura Mayer Art" and the other has the name of my knitwear business "Star Song Knits". I have FB group pages for both, also. On IG, I changed the name from Laura Mayer Art to Star Song Knits so that I didn't lose followers. I am thinking about a third YT channel title which might not be such a specific niche, although both art and knitting may be part of my videos? I'm overthinking, I'm sure. I love this little community that you are already building in your comments, and feel like several of us have similarities and could support each other?
Anne, I joined that Challenge, and I think they have good information, but If I'm honest, I'm not interested in joining their community. As a GenX, I'm going to bring what I have to UA-cam - consistency, a lifetime of experience, and authenticity. I totally resonate with you about not liking to be sold. Every time I have succumbed to the funnel, I've never gotten out of it. What I THOUGHT I would. Now, I just don't do it. I might take a class or workshop, but I'm not open to being funneled. Have a GREAT festival and let's just create amazing content. I was thinking maybe a few of us who are excited about UA-cam, are GenX, and were inspired by Jen at Silver and Solo could form our own little Zoom chat or something to become our own mastermind group. Just a thought. Beautiful painting-I loved watching and listening.
I'm interested!
@@4seasonshelfI would also be interested.
What a great idea, Jackie! I would be down for this! :)
That's a great idea, Jackie! I'd be in on that!
I'm a little embarrassed to admit that while I know from experience what's it like to be funneled, I didn't know that the technique had a name......😏 It was really, really cool to watch you paint while you shared that information!
Dang that funnel! hahahaha. Thank you! <3
Hi Anne. Just found you and subscribed. Boomer here and definitely not a fan of being funneled 😂. Just getting myself ready to make the leap with my channel and start posting my art videos, and I really enjoyed this topic. I enjoyed watching you paint. Have a great and successful show. I've done many in my time. Don't forget sunscreen 😂
Thank you, Rita! I can't wait to see how your channel unfolds. Please let me know when it gets rolling so I can subscribe. Love your artwork on IG! :)
Hi Anne! I loved to see your painting come together! I must say, at the moment I am getting turned off all the videos people are putting out on UA-cam about getting monetized especially those that don't really have content except about their journey to monetization! I mainly watch UA-cam for art tutorials or about art journeys. I have grown my channel extremely s-l-o-w-l-y and organically over two years and only have about 350 subscribers. I have found it frustrating at times but I do also enjoy the creative aspect of making content and then figuring out how to share it! Let me tell you a not so secret, secret: those channels that seem to explode overnight have paid for digital marketing that is costing at least £50.00 per month. They are literally paying to get seen! I don't have the budget at the moment but when I do and I am ready for explosion that is what I am going to do. Save your time and money. Concentrate on making content people want to see and when you feel the time is right, set aside a budget for digital marketing. 😊
Yes Simone, I fully agree with your comment too.
This is a great point, Simone! I'd much prefer organic growth based on real connection and value. That community sounded good to me because it meant having connections with people who are similarly obsessed, but we can make connections elsewhere without paying for it, can't we? :)
@@annelivingstonart I should hope so! 😄
Ahhh I love to hear this, Tracie. Very encouraging. And I love to hear what you have to say on your channel as well! Great minds think alike. :) Yesterday I filmed an hour's worth of tote bag heat-pressing to share with y'all on time lapse, but for some reason didn't process. I'll do it again today! 40 more bags to do. And I will definitely be filming how this event goes! Thanks again for the kind words. I appreciate you! <3

@@christinestout5568 yes, definitely feel lucky that that view is anywhere near where I live! It just reminds me to really breathe every time I see it.
So glad you are doing the ThinkMedia thing! It made such a huge difference for us. It's not magic, and it's not "overnight success," but it gave me information I didn't have and didn't even know I needed, as well as information about some great tools I didn't know existed. I wish I had been aware of it when we first started. My challenge coming up is similar to what you just had: I have three events I need to prepare for and participate in, AND I'm still committed to getting our videos created and posted on time. I'm having to buckle down and be as efficient with my time as possible- which is a good thing anyway, right?
I love the driving home painting! This was so much fun to watch you paint and listen to the process. I love the finished painting.
Oh, your feedback means a lot to me! Thank you very much!!
I tried a new thumbnail look. I personally don’t like it however I hear the style I picked helps draw viewers in😳 we shall see. I love that you are getting your art out there, that’s brave. Well for me it would be brave. My confidence with my art is quite low. I’m excited to watch your art videos.
I know what you mean about the thumbnail conundrum. I like fonts that are probably a little more difficult to read when small, so instead I'm using these big bold clunkers. :) hahaha But at least people can read the words, I guess! Looking forward to hearing if it makes a difference for you!
This walk is gorgeous! The water view! Just stunning. One of our favorite vacations was our time spent in Seattle. I’ve been so consistent however, I have not put in the work you are. That course sounds great. Will you be letting us know how it went? Looks like today is the first day of that class.
