This is a reupload from the video I had up on September 30th, 2021. I had some issues with it that required re-editing to get rid of a copyright claim. It wasn't just demonetized but also BLOCKED worldwide, so no one could even view it. It should be fine now though, I left it uploaded unlisted on a dummy channel overnight to make sure it didn't have the same issue. I've recently been doing that with videos just to vibe check with friends, but the copyright claim didn't come in until a few hours after the original video was up. Anyway, if you commented or saw the original video before, thank you so much for the kind words you all had, I saw that a lot of people resonated with what I was saying in the video, so I wanted to try to get the video back up if possible.

Huh. The three pony kinds each even have a prevalent figurehead of sorts that sort of mirrors pressures from our own world:
    - The earth ponies have Phyllis Cloverleaf, head of Canterlogic, a *corporation*
    - The pegasi have celebrity royals Queen Haven and Princess Pipp, the *government and media*
    - And the unicorns have superstitions and other people from Izzy's village, *religion and one's community*

      - Earth Pony: Phyllis and Sprout, Argyle and Sunny

"Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much, and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity; more than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities life will be violent, and all will be lost."

Funny, I was thinking that people were feeling too much and thinking too little.
I mean, anger is what made rioters destroy things and smear the name of BLM, and anger is what made conservatives pick up guns and aim them at BLM protestors in response. If people had stopped feeling and started thinking "This is going to make us and our cause look bad, maybe I shouldn't do this" or "What will this look like to the other party?" then there would've been much, much better outcomes.
I won't disagree with humanity over machinery and kindness and gentleness over cleverness, but I do disagree with "think too much and feel too little"---that looks like the opposite of what we need!

This new MLP film felt very topical but it also wasn't a blatant allusion to current events. It's fantastic because it presents its morals and concepts in a very timeless way and I know that if some kids watch this film 15 years later in a totally different political and social landscape that they will still come away with the same messages I came away with today.
That's how you tell a good story! This isn't some SNL skit that no one will remember the context for in 5 years, this perfectly crafting the conflict and morals and presenting them in a way that anyone can underwent them with zero context!

    • @awesometwitchy
      @awesometwitchy 2 роки тому

Not blatant, but skirting the line very closely.
The phrase "Earth Pony First" even makes an appearance, pretty sure that's a direct dig at the MAGA movement and the rise of ultra-nationalism across Europe mainly due to the current refugee crisis.
"Think in black and white, that's your pony right." So many people still going out of their way to avoid masks, social distancing and vaccines just to prove that they have the right to do so. I could go on and on.
My point is that there are direct parallels to current politics, but children wouldn't notice it. I think that's a good thing.

It's great to see that empathy is not dead. People right now are so afraid it has pushed them farther and farther apart. I am trying to keep it under control but the part that scares me is not the crisis it's the people that are handling it poorly. So it's great to see humanity is not all lost.

Never thought about that before. Even do I have problems with the movie, I generally think is OK. It's not gonna change everyone or be considered one of the most important movies of all decades, but at least the movie has SOMETHING to say about Fear and Mistrust being the wrong thing to do in this situation, when we can choose Friendship and Love instead. I'm invested to see what are they gonna do with the TV Show and Special for Netflix.

It’s good for kids to learn at a young age for sure since fearmongering can start at a young age. In the movie the kids r told that they should fear and hate other races by most authority, before growing up to realize it was wrong. Teaching kids to abandon held beliefs in this way as they grow older or to not 100% take it seriously and try to look at all sides is a good thing

Ultimately, in this movie, there is no real villain. The closest thing you can call a villain would be whoever or whatever caused the divide in the first place all those years ago, but whoever or whatever it was, it's gone now, so its identity doesn't matter. Instead, what we're seeing is the remnants of world that lost its way and the ponies who have always been brought up on this idea that it's 'us vs them' and they should keep to their own.
For a long time nothing comes of it, until the three tribes eventually interact again and that causes a spark that turns fear to anger. Sprout encites an angry mob and nearly starts a war, the Pegasi overthrow their monarchy, and in the case of the Unicorns, they seem the most effected by magic no longer being around, most of them just having no energy at all, but when they see Earth Ponies and Pegasi, they get so angry that it actually revitalises them, at least a little.

I remember being hopeful when I heard that this new generation was going to tackle racism/inequality, but damn I did not expect it to handle the topic of a people divided by manipulation, oppression and even differing beliefs. It's actually pretty heavy if you think about it in that regard. Even if people think the movie is mediocre or disappointing, I can't help but have a deep respect for it for trying to tackle these kinds of issues, especially ones as topical as corrupt/misguided leaders or corporations. I love that it tried to convey an important message rather than just try and be another pony movie.
It's so sad that idealism and optimism like Sunny's is so often viewed with a cynical eye, because honestly, optimism and idealism is the only thing that can make changes in the world. These changes were made by people who believed that they could make said change. This is why I hate the saying, "it's the way life is," because life *doesn't need to be this way.*

    • @PaleoSteno
      @PaleoSteno  2 роки тому +15

Multiple characters actually have a way of saying, "it's the way life is" during the movie too. Hitch says it to Sunny after she fails at Canterlogic, Pipp says it's just the way things are when explaining that only royalty can fly, and that one young background pony in bridlewood when asking his father, "Why didn't it work daddy?" the dad says, "because it's all make believe." It makes Sunny's determination that much more admirable.

Here's the thing; irl, you can't control how other people think, you can only control how you think. You can't make the world a better place but you CAN make yourself a better person. - Miyamoto Musashi. I'm more on board with Argyle's method of thinking that Sunny adopted after her talk with Hitch. "If the other earth ponies aren't gonna start being friends with other tribes, then it starts with me. I'll start doing it." After all, she's lecturing ponies when she herself has never met a pegasus or unicorn in all her life. No one's gonna take her seriously.

One of the reasons I was so excited to see this film was because it was like "going to church". In irl I hate church it makes me angry and fills me with hatred. I love watching shows like MLP because they're so sincere in their message of idealism it helps me rejuvenate my own idealism. This past year has been hard. My work place has put me in direct contact with many people that over time has whittled down my empathy. Its like that nudge I need to remind me that there are other people who are still so full of kindness and optimism they create beautiful movies just to remind us why its important to not let other emotions sway us to become apathetic. It helps me keep a smile on my face a little longer throughout the course of my work day and helps me remember to have a little more kindness when dealing with people I'm not so fond of.

So something I just realized when I went to rewatch gen 4 after seeing this review, is that the element of magic isn’t magic it’s trust, the only way sunny brought magic back was to get all the pony to trust each other again. It’s it’s the same with twilight, for example season 4 was all about each of the main 6 getting there keys based on there elements, and twilights key makes no sense if you look at it from her doing something magical because she didn’t, but what she did do show someone true trust, and honestly it makes sense in a friendship standpoint to because your can’t truly be friends with someone if you don’t trust them.

I'm not gonna lie, I've been looking for pony vids.... I mean video reviews, essays, and analysis of the new movie...
I've been on the hunt for someone who had a unique take on the movie, something that I didn't catch or that might have had an impact I didn't notice... I have been watching videos from bronies, cartoon reviewers, and even haters, looking for unique takes, but nobody seemed to look at the movie on beyond a surface level. comparisons to g4, speculation on the upcoming series, hit pieces on it's lore... sure not (all) bad videos, but none that scratched that itch of getting a new and interesting take to send my brain into overdrive...
    ..until now.
I'm not saying that "ponies are influenced by propaganda the same way we are" is some deep take that nobody could have thought of, or that the writers were super geniuses for including it... but IDK it just has a lot of ramifications outside of the story that it lets me reframe the entire film. And even fixes a lot of the smaller issues i had with the films pacing or tone.
    anyways great job!

And yet, people decry animation and in particular My Little Pony and similar brands because they were initially created to sell toys to kids. And just because a movie or show is intended for kids doesn't mean that the lessons aren't still important or that you may not be in need of a refresh yourself. It's all about execution. There were maybe two butt jokes this whole movie full of clever dialog and situational comedy, and perhaps a few moments where I could see some hot selling toys coming out if it, but the story and message were still really well done and not just some tacked on thing blanketing an advertisement; it was the whole point of the movie, and it just happened to use ponies as the medium. I was actually considering rewatching the movie just because I had fun watching it, but now I kind of want to to see what more I can gain from it.

It's important to remember that just because you're grown up doesn't mean that those same morals and lessons don't still apply, and shows that spread these basics of human decency still hold value.

So the 3 kingdoms sorta represent facets of our real world that have gotten out of hand.
Earth Ponies are the industrialists who had constant fear and conspiracy fed to them every day.
Pegasai are materialists who hide behind their screens and blind trust of idols.
Unicorns are the religious/spiritualists who have let superstition take over their lives
No one individual is necessarily bad from this society their environment shaped who they are but not necessarily what they can be. Not everyone can be swayed but if someone helps at least one become a bit better then over time one can dilute that facet of society till not necessarily gone, but to the point they are no longer at a detriment then. We would not live to see the fruit of such labor but our children's children might.

I can't believe I didn't notice it, so I'm glad you pointed it out. I really feel like the most important word Sunny uses is "we can _choose_ friendship". So much of how we treat people is a choice. A lot of it is instinctual of course, but when you're having a tough conversation with someone, you can choose how you react. You can choose to get offended or to work through your differences. You can choose to be friends with someone you know you disagree with, or you can leave them. You can choose hate or love. I know the world's so much more complex than that, but if we're gonna get anywhere with fixing how broken our world is, we can start with those simple everyday choices. Things will get a lot better if we actually care.
This also has inspired me to reach out to an old friend of mine...

While you do make good points, I have to point out that I think it has been the past 4 years that have screwed us in America royally, I mean when you have a president who has no empathy for anyone but himself it kinda gets annoying, then when you have a literal Angry mob trying to start an insurrection, it gets even more annoying, but I agree that no matter how divided we are now there is still hope. I mean we voted in the first black president in 2008 and the first black female Vice President in 2020. We chose hope in those two instants, and even though there are some people out there with misinformation, there is hope. I never give up on people unless they are too far gone, but even though I know that’s wrong of me, there is still a part of me that believes in them. Thanks for this video, hon. ❤️

To me I didn't just see the message, I also saw, I guess the closest thing to is like, a post Roman Italy in the medieval period to classic antiquity. It's like, Equestria (Rome) is gone, it's people once unified by a common banner and culture. Now divided into what looks like city states at each other's throats. Like, I couldn't not see it, and it was just so sad.

I'm glad you made this video. I had a similar experience from the G5 movie. I was more cynical and withdrawn from everything, i like to write on fimfiction and pretty much everything i was working on there was rated M and violent and tragic/sad because thats where my mind has been. This movie totally stripped away most of that for me and for the first time ever I am having an absolute blast writing super wholesome G5 content and I've been more patient, understanding, empathetic and happier than I have been in a long while. I'm glad G5 came out and was the movie it was and I'm glad you made this video too!

Personally I think the best message MLP has shown in this movie and Gen4, is that impactful change only happens when a large community comes together to solve a problem. But in order to really reach it, it'll require communication and empathy for the solutions to be effective. There's a reason why the brony fandom is still kicking around and it's because it's a global community of people that love this show, remember what it’s like to be a kid and found people who share an connect with that. I'm glad the movie came out to decent reception, high quality and hopefully the series is just as good.

It's not naiive to believe in something, because when you stand for something, you have less of a chance to fall for anything.
You wanting to try and change people's minds on being distrustful or suspicious of others, or even becoming jaded and losing empathy isn't wrong, it's a form of Optimism, a hope for something better to come so others won't go through what you, and others, are or have already gone through.

Kindred spirits. Went through similar stuff and continue to do so. Did not expect that the new movie would inject some fresh hope into my psyche especially after seeing humanity deteriorate over the past 2 years including the humanity of friends, co-workers and otherwise. Sprout's song hit very close to home as if to look into some sort of mirror. Generally, I haven't sad for such a prolonged period of time including 3 episodes of depression and spinal injury. I just want to point out that Phyllis Cloverleaf isn't actually trying to manipulate or scam her son and the rest of the earth ponies... When Izzy shows up in Maretime Bay, Phyllis is the FIRST to don the mind reading protection hats, and while she does support Sprout's rise to Sheriff, she does quickly notice how he's starting to get a bit too carried away. Heck, literally the MOMENT Sunny reveals to them that the other tribes have no magic, Phyllis reacts with confusion. Basically like someone that's gone their whole life doing something they thought was right, only to find out things aren't what they thought they were.
She really seemed to believe she and her company were making products to keep the earth ponies safe, and that the other tribes WERE as bad as the stories said.

Thanks for saying it, mlp as a franchise has been putting out some great messages in their content and this movie is no different. We the people should come together despite our differences because some things have answers and it seems like everyone is wrong about at least something these days. Most people are good and want to make the world better, we just have different ideas on how to do it. We have an issue of unwanted pregnancies and some people think the solution is abortion. I know this is just ending a life. My solution would be education. Teach young adults how to parent and use protection and then make them decide for themselves. The consequence of pregnancy can be completely avoided if people practice abstinence until they want kids. Ending a human life to avoid the consequences? That's not right. Bacteria is life on Mars, but a heartbeat isn't life on earth? Sure Jan. People do not have the right to have sex, it takes two, it has consequences. Some of us get taught in school about safe sex, others about abstinence, some get both sides. I think everyone deserves to be given all the information, we can't force them all to listen but they all should have the opportunity. Trying to control the outcome is how you mess things up. My children will be raised to deal with the consequences of their actions. When the time comes I will teach them that if they make the choice to have sex they are always taking the risk of getting pregnant, even with protection. I will teach them that life begins at conception and if amd when they do become pregnant it is murder to end that life intentionally. They will also know self defense and how to use firearms and this education will lower the risk of rape, and by extention a pregnancy forced on a woman. I personally believe in these cases the woman absolutely needs inpatient care (I am not a doctor and don't claim to be one) and the only time I would even consider abortion an acceptable option is if the woman is legitimately suicidal. Even then I am strongly against these abortions and would talk to the woman about adoption. Using taxpayer money to help rape victims wouldn't be bad to me. We could have facilities to help them specifically and these places hypothetically could have a pregnant victim be cared for properly throughout the whole pregnancy and months after for treating post partum. Bad people do exist and victims of circumstance are common. Most pro life people believe in legitimate solutions to the cases of rape and incest, we know that if a pregnancy will kill a woman then abortion might be the last option. The other side should be able to understand that abortion is serious and not meant to be used AS birth control, same as we understand there's rare cases it might be nessisarry. In a perfect world all women would be trained and armed to protect themselves from rape. In a perfect world any woman struggling with their mental health would have a safe place to go. We can make the perfect world we want if we just talk to eachother. Both sides seem to want the same thing in general, while pro life focuses on the lives of the babies, pro choice bases most of their arguments on the choices and safety of the woman. We can absolutely handle both issues at the same time. The issue I see is when a woman just can't take responsibility for her own actions. If you choose to have sex and you get pregnant, you knew that could happen. You made your choice and it resulted in a new life. You can make the choice not to have sex and therefore not to have children. I don't really have much empathy for these women who can't control themselves. Maybe I could but it's hard when it's them making the bad decisions themselves, they aren't victims. The only victim in abortion is almost always the baby. Almost all abortions are because the woman doesn't want to change her lifestyle. Millions of lives ending because women want to have sex and just kill the baby when that happens. Why don't these women get their tubes removed? Because abortions are usually free and they would have to pay to solve the issue. When half of the people are against the practice we should not be using taxpayer money to support it at least. Honestly if they aren't going to use taxes properly we shouldn't pay them and that could bring us civil war. I imagine most people could come together on a solution that makes everyone happy, except those who will never be happy. Some won't be happy unless they get their way and they act like children about it. I'll be very happy just to see them stop spending taxpayer money on something half of the people think is wrong. I'll be even happier if they outlaw abortion and start to handle the rare extreme cases properly. If this isn't a solution for you then you should not use the rare extreme cases for your argument. These rare cases do not justify the other ninty something percent of abortions that are in fact women who use it as birth control. I don't even expect anyone to read this lol. My little pony teaches us all to listen to eachother, if anyone replies in a nasty manner to me I will just ignore them. I genuinely think we can learn a lot about friendship from the last generation and maybe even more from this new one. Deep down all most people want is to fix the problems we have. We shouldn't ever give in to learned helplessness. Getting angry or mean can make it harder to fix so there's really no point for anyone on any side to get mad. I think civil discourse is the best way to go, to come to understandings, rather than getting angry or even debate. I wish you all the best ❤ happy spooky month!
