- In this video, we're going to explore why you should kill Karlach in Baldur's Gate 3. We'll be looking at this through the lens of a devil's advocate - since sparing and recruiting her is the obvious good choice. There are some compelling gameplay and roleplaying reasons to kill Karlach and fulfill the will of the Blade of Frontiers (Wyll).

The blood war is Devils vs Demons. In a weird way its actually beneficial for the material realm as it distracts two groups of horrible creatures. If the eternal war ever ended it would be devastating for humanity.
That's what made Zariel swap sides. But isn't exactly true. Material plane is invaded by both anyway.
With one of them dead and gone, the celestials would only need to fight one and would easily win.
@@UltimosGabriel Thats only partially true. With either side dead and gone the other can focus their efforts on an actually invasion. Devils could spend more time making deals and amassing power until the celestials couldnt stop them, including making more corrupted celestials and putting themselves into positions that undermine efforts to stop them. Demons however would just flood the material plan with nearly endless hordes of respawning monstrosities. The Blood War is actually good for Humanity as it limits the number of Demons that can run free and eats up Devil resources, both with little to no outside intervention
Yup. It's like the only thing that keeps them in check and prevents them from destroying the multiverse. 😂
@@UltimosGabriel , actually, the Celestials have never been interested in the level of sheer destruction and chaos and death (including permanent death of souls) that would ensue if the Celestials attacked the Lower Planes. That is why the Celestials have allowed the Blood War to continue, eon after eon. It is the greater good.
@@UltimosGabriel The celestials tried fighting the demons alone, they were corrupted and became the devils (who continue the fight) so to say they'd easily win against either isn't really true as they lost against one already, and there were a lot less demons back then. The demons essentially have infinite numbers and they mostly fight amongst themselves. When it spills into other lower planes the devils push back. For it to end someone would have to unite the demons, and there just isn't anyone with near the power to do that.
Leave it to Dan to be play the absolute worst person in a game so I never have to. Thanks Dan. 😆
dumb video
Absolute worst? The Dark Urge begs to differ. I mean, it gives you the option to chop of Gale's hand instead of pulling him from the portal, i bet there is some gruesome option with Karlach as well.
@@nesorrett TBH, Dark Urge is actually the best character because it ties in best to the game's real villain: Baal
@@nesorrett Killing the baby Owl-bear is easily worst that just choping a hand.
@@roftarExactly, I myself prefer his redemption.
There is actually another dialogue option with the paladins. If you have Karlach in your party but instead of taking her into the house let her wait outside, the Paladin will again try to persuade you. If you lie and say that you haven't met Karlach and believe him, he mocks Karlach for her poor choice of allies and pulls his blade in the name of Zariel as apperently there are scouts nearby, which have seen you.
Either way this causes your paladin to become an oath breaker as warriors of the light do not associate themselves with demons, no matter how good the demon’s intentions are.
@@Unchainedful yup, i didn't know what broke my paladin's oath, but after figuring out, i'm no more using paladin
@@tensongo3944lol you can either be an oath breaker which is kinda lame, or you can play the game the way it’s supposed to be played

Karlach is just the coolest group member I've met so far and damn is she a beast in combat. Killing her is really a bad choice if you don't want to go a really evil route.

i didnt want to kill her but.. the druids killed the little girl with the snake so i killed the druids and war broke out and a lot of ppl died.. i didnt kill any teefling but karlach wanted nothing to do with me and only would fight me.
I killed her but only because everybody told me to and I legit thought she was a baddie! I just wanted to help my boy Wyl out
Nah, she's annoying. Murdered her and never looked back.
@@KevinCourbet Your loss...
Fun fact, if you play as tiefling with the subrace of zariel you also can tell he is lying
You can also tell if you're a Paladin.
If you really want to be evil there's more to be done with her
You can romance her, convince her to turn herself into a mindflayer to fight the absolute and in the 11'th hour, turn on her to dominate said absolute. She turned herself into a mind flayer for nothing
I love Karlach. She's just so damn likable. I can't kill her. She sat down beside my PC in camp last night, told her what a good friend she was and then proclaimed "I wanna ride you till you see stars", lol. I burst out laughing and thought, well that escalated quickly.

I like Karlach too, but that really came out of no where. I think prior to that the only interest my custom character had shown was an initial 'I still can't touch you' after the first repair of her Infernal Engine. But then, all the companions are ready to drop pants at the drop of a hat in this game.
you can still have her as a companion if you kill her. just carry her severed head around with you and talk to her whenever you want.
You don't have to guess the motives of the "paladins" hunting Karlach. Use Talk with the Dead on the corpse in the tollhouse, just beside the lady merchant, and you'll know who and what they are.
And what are they telling?
Something more?
@@jackwriter1908You don't mind spoilers? Just in case there are others who don't wanna get spoiled

Using Speak with the Dead on the corpse reveals that they are cultists that worship Zariel, and not paladins, as they claim. This means they're lying about who they are and what they are doing. "Dead men tell no tales" doesn't apply to Faerun.
@@passerby5 hm, I guess I have to pick up speak with dead from somewhere...
That and Speak with Animals... those are two spells I would love to have in that game.
@@jackwriter1908 don't wanna spoil too much, except that the devs really want players to talk to corpses, so the spell is given to you pretty early in a quest.
You don't even need to speak with dead if you talk to the paladins eventually they'll reveal the truth
Wow, you just explained in detail why it’s a terrible idea to kill Karloch. Her death isn’t worth a “I’ve been to Hell” T-Shirt. At least now I know.
but then she dies or goes back to hell to survive.
While I am planning to have multiple playthrough of this game where I roleplay characters with different "views on things" yeah, nah there will never be a playthrough where I kill Karlach 😂
Based
Same, she's perfect
I mean there is one where I kill every NPC
Its my first one and well...to late
So far, the way I've been doing it on subsequent playthroughs is to kill off the redundant companion. For example, if I'm playing the spell caster, I don't need Gale so I either find a way to kill him safely or, I leave him for dead in the portal. If I'm a Rogue, then I either don't recruit Astarion or first chance I get to kill him, I do. That kind of thing.
So, If I do a playthrough sometime where *I'm* the Barbarian, I'd probably kill her off then, but idk. Karlach might be the one exception to this rule lol. 😅
You forgot the best part. Literally slicing her head in an epic cutscene to prove to the pallys you killed her. It was great on my evil playthrough :D
The interaction between Karlach and Wyll changed my mind. I was originally going into this cold and planning an evil playthrough but then this shit happened and I'm like "Damn...I can't do it". The idea of the woman (who is admittedly a total muscle mommy) who is literally going through hell to be able to do more than just survive but to LIVE is done with A+ writing and then we have Wyll who looks at that and goes "If I let her live then I'm fucked but this is the right thing to do so fucking bring it on bitch"! This showed Wyll wasn't just a pompous ass with an ego but that he genuinely is trying to do the right thing and is willing to take the hit if needs be. Gotta respect that energy.
@seanmccord1411i agre, they try hard to make the player like her
@@Nokipanthey do ? I found her extremely annoying and killed her the first moment I met her lol
@seanmccord1411Don't you mean "She's fucking likeable but her writing is motherfucking Reddit tier"
Some day, I will do another good play through where I actually keep Wyll and Karlach in the party together so I get to see more of their dynamic. Alas, I'm playing a swords bard, and there's only room for one melee/charisma caster hybrid build in this party. So step aside Wyll for Gale and his massive spellbook.
@seanmccord1411personally, I find Wyll's dialogue to be kinda cringe, but Karlach's to be more genuinely chaotic good dumpster fire.
The cold calculus is Wyll's drip doesn't supersede Karlach's hotness.
nice pun!
Any sorlock benefits more from killing her. She's just a fighter waiting to be reclassed anyways >=]
"Hail the blade" are you serious mate ?
You do realize that fake paladin of Tyr actually serves Zariel right?
To prove it you can make few checks to read his mind or detect that he is a lying. So, Karlach is honest with that they are fake paladins.

6:43 Well, to be fair Dan. Their is a massive difference between working for an extremely evil mortal man, and working for a literal Devil that has the ability to torture your soul and body for eternity if you refuse to cooperate.
Plus, like the game says, she escaped the first chance she had, and also was dedicated to changing and becoming better, so I don’t think that’s reason enough to kill her.
I would also like to add there is a significant difference to "following orders" to enable the holocaust and other atrocities Nazi Germany committed, and "following orders" to kill demons. The comparison Dan makes is trite as hell.
Also, the "Paladins" of Tyr are lying.
100% on the 'Paladins' of Tyr are lying comment. Use speak to dead on the corpses in the building with the paladins and around it.
@@aleccaldas8616Another difference between the Nuremberg trials and Karlach is that those were the leaders of the Nazi government and were essentially trying to play “pin the blame on Hitler” to get out of their own role in the holocaust and war, of which they had much personal agency in undertaking.
No. It's not different. Comically, Karlach is damned. And she should be damned by any playthrough where your character is uninterested in redemption arcs.
@@SamBrockmann Sure, she’s damned, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to be a better person and dedicating what time she has to others.
She’s an inspiration in my book.
I've accidentally found Karlach without Wyll in party (of course I've met him during the goblin ambush, but then just sent to the camp). I've sent Karlach to the camp as well. And guess what -- once I've went to the camp, they had a similar "I should kill you" scene, but when I convinced Wyll to spare Karlach nothing happened with Wyll. Probably Mizora shows up only if Wyll is in the party, or his quest was initiated. But here both Karlach and Wyll were just chilling at the camp.
bro never rested
"And I think I heard her shouting the 'N' word!" had my dying 🤣
Luckily she's red and not human so she can say it
Did you try killing Karlach, stuffing her body in a bag, and bringing her back to the camp. Get the reward for killing her and after your patron leaves you revivify her? Curious if Larian allows that. You technically met the letter of the deal…
If you kill a companion as part of the story, you can't revify them anymore.
You can only revify companions who die in battle with you as long as it is not scripted.
i killed her before i attacked her and had accendetly killed the ones in the village to so after looting her and finding a revive on her i decided to try ress her and she talked to me like nothing had happened. maybe it could be done later if you just dont talk to her before killing her
@@holymacarony85 You and me did the same thing lol. I didn’t realize she was a playable character and after initiating combat, she didn’t attack at all. Then I saw the PC items on her body and felt like crap. Idk if you can go back to her after Wyll’s encounter so he doesn’t get transform. I doubt it, but would be neat
Now that is proper D&D Thinking and not BG3 thinking
They used to allow something similar (kill her, tell someone, secretly revive her, then long rest), but it was patched out. Not sure why.
I'd love it of you were to make more videos about unusual choices that most people wouldn't make.

In my first chaotic good playthrough I think I got the best outcome for Wyll and Karlach. Recruited Karlach, Wyll became a tiefling, I helped him break his pact, saved his dad from almost certain death, helped them reconcile, got Karlach her upgrade so she could at least live out her final days in freedom.
In my current playthrough Wyll tragically died while trying to protect the grove from invading goblins. I may have been involved with his death. Minthara is a pretty cool companion too though.
Wyll doesn’t become a tiefling he becomes a devil
You didn't. The best outcome is Will and Karlach go to Avernus since that will save Karlach and you can go with them if you want. Then you fight against Zariel and have more adventures (implied - not actual gameplay). She even lights a cigar. Best ending.
@@ParadiseAndGin Maybe. Karlach said she didn't want to go back to Avernus. I respected her wish. Whichever ending is better is debatable.

Ok you got me I'll kill Karlach
I hate that the evil approach to this is so rewarding from an early stand point but the armour you get most likely will fall off anyway so its a 50/50 maybe even slightly in favour of recruiting her
Seems pretty in tune with evil overall. Great short-term rewards, sh*tty long-term plan for you.
To be fair, a "good" "non-grove raid" playthrough gives you enough companions that you can miss one or two.

What would really make this choice interesting is if Wyll learns the truth later on, and then has to grapple with his choice, especially considering the situation with his father.
I took her head the moment I saw her - greetings from a Vengeance Paladin.

Her fate was sealed when I saw that side cut
Big Dan's profile pic looks like a Windows '95 mascot/serial killer living in his parents' basement.
I think he would agree that's a fair assessment.
My friends and I accidentally triggered some glitch which made the Druids attack everyone, we slaughtered them to a man, because of that we were unable to recruit her, so we decided to just take her head along with us for a while.
My main has a weird glitch. When he switches from bow to melee weapon, it isn't a rapier - it's a sausage.
Same Here ! Druids attacks everyone so we kills them. Karlach don't want to join the groups so we take his head...
The reason to keep Karlach alive is so you can keep your romance with Lae’zel and prevent Orpheus from becoming a mindflayer or dying, by having Karlach become a mindflayer instead.
Karlach is so wholsesome and lovable. Fast became my new favorite character.
Shes hot too.
Funny, found her annoying right from the get go. Murdered her and never looked back.
My second playthrough was with a murderous Dark Urge Monk and I'm pretty sure that if you destroy the Grove, both Wyll and Karlach will leave (maybe not Karlach but Wyll definitely). So I took the opportunity to kill Karlach so that Wyll gets the armor from Mizora and I stole the armor and put it on my monk (who is still wearing it now into Act 3) before Wyll left my party. I was also interested in seeing Minthara's story so the Grove kind of had to go and worked out since I was playing Dark Urge anyway. That said though, I definitely like Karlach, I might do another playthrough with her on my team, I definitely felt bad for killing her, especially knowing what kind of character she was beforehand.
My man, I've done EXACTLY the same thing. Only thing is I romanced her in my first playthrough, so taking her head was slike chopping an onion

I wouldve never have seen this honestly, cant imagine ever killing her tbh. she gives off big sister/victim of circumstance vibes and with my hero complex I could never condemn her. Karlach at the Nuremberg trials:
Prosecutor- Your honor, today we will provide inscrutable evidence that the defendant, one Ms. Karlach, slaughtered dozens of defenseless demons in compulsory service of the Archdevil Zariel.
Judge- How do you plead?
Karlach- ...Guilty?
Judge- Uh huh... right, well. Case dismissed.
Nothing would ever convince me to kill her, by far my favorite character. I really couldnt care less about any of the other characters outside of her and wyll
First thirty seconds tells me to kill Karlach then proceeds to claim he makes terrible decisions in rpgs...
What if you play as Karlach yourself? Can you recruit Wyll at all?
Good question!
the main reason why i wanna recruit her is so that i can replace Lae'Zel with her as my melee fighter. The gith is just way too annoying.
I found her annoying too and even did her quest only to have to put her down at the end of it...got a nice halberd out of it though. Sonic Resonance is really nice.
To me Karlach is annoying and ''cringy'' so she always dies and i stick with Lae'zel.
One thing that was missed for consideration is if you successfully use Read Thoughts on the "paladins" asking you to kill her for "justice" at her "slaughter of dozens of villagers," you see he's totally bull$hitting you and really is actually just lying to get you to hunt her for him. Also, Karlach is awesome and quite effective in combat, so can be a handy melee-dps (to use RPG terms), as well as surprisingly tanky (especially with Bear totem/aspect that gives her resistance to all damage other than psychic while Raging); and Wyll readily agrees with you that sparing her was the right thing to do, even after he gets forcibly transformed.
As someone who just finished up my Dark Urge playthrough I do gotta say, keep Karlach alive, and see what you can do to her right at the end of the game instead 😁

Sadly, I'm bugging out in my game. Despite killing Karlach, Wyll is still given the hellspawn route. Admittedly, the hellspawn looks pretty nice anyways - Though it's unfortunate that it gave him one end despite doing the other.
Drip > karlach
She gives me a typical Woke She-Hulk vibe, her personality was disruptive to my immersion in the story.
sadly while the VA did fabulous work, she had to work with a shit script and a barebone character written like a modern day person. Since when spitting "fuck" at every turn considered "barbarian/savage"?
She has no growth and is written as an extreme goodie-two-shoes liked by everyone, the game/devs themselves push it so far they tell you many times she is good and innocent while going through the beheading/killing. Pathetic char, I loved her at first but the skeleton questline and pegging romance didn't help. (a recent mod fixes the pegging by swapping characters but still, wtf is that).
Speaking as somebody who killed Karlach on his first playthrough, there is also one big plus to doing this:
SPOILER
In act 3, you need to enter Wyrm's Crossing in order to enter the Lower City. If Wyll is in you party, and is NOT hornless, the guards will immediately recognize him and let him in. Otherwise, they will bqr him. This is because if Wyll has his horns the guards will claim he is some random tiefling and not the Duke's son. So, by killing Karlach, I had the quickest access to the city proper.
I love Karlach's character, a reason why I have her in my second playthrough. But the beauty of this game is how there are so many different ways the story can go.
In EA it was overall the best option to kill Karlach. You save a handful of souls even if they served Zariel because it was understandable. Full release I'm not entirely sure yet
Anders and his crew had already forfeit their souls in service to a Devil, so saving Karlach was still the best option, IMHO.
I was kinda shocked. In EA Anders tries to reason with you if you tell him you know the truth. In the full game though he just drops the formalities and says he's sick of pretending.
@@horrorfan117 He was better in the EA, there you had a real reason to help the fake paladins out of pity. They supposedly didn't do it all just for power, but now they are just evil liars. I miss that bitter taste in this quest.

I think the game wants you to keep her alive. It has that 2hand sword right there, and there is the cave near by (where you killed the knolls) that has the barbarian boots. Too much good loot near her to be there by accident.
Those paladins are liars. When I go to them with her they are scared but I used "Deteck thought" and they were happy to see Karlach do they will bring her to archdevil... Also I spoke with dead in their building that also confirm that he was serwant of the devil.
Its true that Karlach line of defence is "I was following orders" but I ask who would not when the choice literal is "Follow order or Die". So I spared her but still I fell bad for Wyll. Part of me is like... That was choice between looking like evil one or becoming evil inside his hearth.
"But I ask who would not when the choice literal is "Follow order or Die""
The hundreds of thousands of German communists and other political prisoners who were murdered for resisting Nazi rule? That's literally the moral standard everyone is (or ought to be) held to.
I mean, if the choice is between dying or committing horrific atrocities, then you should choose to die.
Best part is speaking to the bowl head while actually being a paladin of Tyr...
I'm one of the rare people who can't stand Karlach, so I either kill her or ignore her on every playthrough.
She usually stays in my camp for the game
She's horribly written. Her personality makes no sense considering her background and her dialog is like nails on a chalk board.
You never need to talk to her, you can just shoot her from across the river and start combat. Once she's down you can cut her head off. Super easy, barely an inconvenience.
I killed her in my current playthrough.
Don't miss her, she's annoying anyway.
Unless it's been patched, you can kill Karlach, have your visit from Mizora, and revive karlach's body and play on. You might need to revive her first, but it still treats her as being killed for Wyll's purposes.
I killed her because it was obvious that she was meant to be likable by everyone and I hate that the devs seems to force you to like her so I definitely killed her off.
Lmao are you a kid? Or just jealous she's actually likeable? You have issues bro
If you rescue the bard from the goblins, he will join your camp.
There you can have him make "surgery" to remove the tadpole.
Eventually you will loose your left eye and keep the tadpole....
But you will get an implant eye that lets you see invisible creatures within 9m.
If they fail a dex save throw they will also loose invis so everyone can see them.
Idk how frequent it is to fight invisible enemies, but if there are invisible enemies, i bet they would suck to fight against xd
It comes in handy. A LOT! lol
I just literally can't. Karlach is just amazeballs
I killed her in my first playthrough for RP reasons, though the swag was a nice bonus
I’m a vengeance Paladin and did not become oath breaker by saving her. That’s all I need to know lol
Thanks dude!
I had a task to kill her from Will, after that got 2nd task from paladin. So i killed her and chopped her head for shitty sword. 😂😂 After that Will starts to cry: " Oh we shouldn't have kill her, bla bla" , so i just killed him too, because he was so annoying.
