    This camera still rocks in 2021. I bought one, it felt down by my fault and the screen ribbon was defective :-( but I like this camera so much that I bought another one and sold the other one on ebay for repair. I really hope the person who bought it can save his life.

      Agreed. I still used mine with prime lenses and 12-45 pro zoom lens. You don't need anything more if you're not professional. ;)

    Interestingly, the On-Off switch is an ancient design, almost identical to the original Olympus OM-.1 (and similar to the OM-2 also). I think it was intended to give the retro look and echo those great film cameras.

    I think the problem with your sideway shift is that you're recording in 25p. If you're gonna pan a lot, i think it's no brainer to use 60p. I think the same issue often happens in action cam, thats why people opt for action cam that can do 60p because they pan a lot. They also eliminate the jumping sequence because of the pixel binning, which makes it much smoother.

      If: 4K is important
      Then: buy the other product
      If: 4K is _not_ important
      Then: do not buy the other product
      Simple.

    +neti neti I don't find it uncomfortable to reach as long as you are holing the camera with both hands. If you use the right hand only, you can loose some grip when you press it.

    I would have said that focus bracketing is big new feature to OM-D (E-330 - E-520 had it) and coming to E-M1 (and focus Stacking too).

    First visual impressions on buying one- solid beautiful and very good quality. One small criticism is the grip or lack of. And as it's fairly weighty, i put my finger underneath to compensate and the edge is too sharp. So therefor I will look at a good half case and hope this helps

    Hi, I am thinking about buying this camera on black friday for myself. It seems like a great option for me. But you mentioned in the video that sony and ? can't remember have a few better cameras? do you mean better at the same price point? or better and in a higher price bracket? I would be interested in them if they are around the same price point.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому +1

      +Melissa Labadie I can't remember mentioning Sony in the video. I mention the old E-M10 that is still on the market and more affordable for users on a tight budget. The E-M10 II is an excellent choice to start with m4/3 and gets some nice features from both the E-M1 and E-M5 II. The only Sony alternative would be the a6000: better sensor and AF but lacks some interesting things such as the 5-axis stabilisation. The EVF is also better on the E-M10 II.

      +dhnnylil G80 if you also want excellent 4K video, mic input and other interesting video settings.
      X-T10 for its lovely colors,
      E-M10 II for its 5-axis stabilization, small size and extra features.
      The G80 is the most complete as it has 5-axis stabilization and tons of extra features too.

    is this any good for action sport. ? i have a sony hx300 bridge camera, its good but takes ages to ready for next pic, worse when using multi fps. . ? i dont want to go slr. . i like the compact omd with proper eye viewfinder

    Just got the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II. One of the things I noticed is a very noticeable lag/jerk when using the EVF. I tried a couple of different lenses (the 14-42 kit lens and 45mm prime) and they both do this. The jerking/lagging goes away when I switch to the Simulated Optical Viewfinder. I'm wondering if this is an issue with the camera in general that may be fixed with some future firmware update or if its a specific defect that requires exchanging the camera, as the jerk/lag is very annoying when using the EVF. Did you notice this when you were using the EVF?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому +1

      +Peter Schulman I didn't notice any particular jerk/lag with my sample. I tried all the different settings concerning the EVF and find it to be excellent, not excessive time lag and not other relevant issues.

    • @attentionaddicts
      @attentionaddicts 9 років тому

      +Peter Schulman I have the same EVF jerk problem; occurs in high constrast lighting or low light.
      Did you ever resolve the problem; I'm wondering is it a hardware problem or an issue with this camera?

    Would it be wise to buy the mark I if it’s my first camera? And will I still be able to take similar long exposures with the mark I as compared with the mark ii? Thanks great video by the way

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  7 років тому

      The mark I is a good camera, if you find it at a good price go for it. The stabilisation is not as good as the mark II (3 axis vs 5 axis) but you have the same long exposure features.

    What Cameras would you say this competes with from a video perspective? What alternatives would you recommend in the sub $900 range for video only?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому

      +Frost Tech Panasonic G7 without any doubts. Great video capabilities and cost even less than $900.

    • @AFKTech
      @AFKTech 9 років тому

      Would you put the video quality of the G7 above the Sony RX100M3? That is the current camera that I am using, however I have to return it to a friend in the upcoming weeks. I'm shooting 1080p for the most part so that is my focus.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому

      +Frost Tech I haven't compare the side by side. The RX100 M3 is a stunning compact camera but the G7 has definitely some advantage on the IQ department (larger sensor). Also you can add more lenses later on or use the 4k capabilities of the camera.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому

      +Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) of course the RX100M3 has the advantage of being very small and pocketable.

    Hi Mathieu, was wondering whats the difference between the 14-42mm EZ and the ii R lens? Do you think it's a must buy, or would you recommend to go for a prime lens like the 17mm/25mm? Hope to hear from you soon! :)

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому

      +Justine Q the main difference is that the EZ version has an electronic zoom (you can choose between three zoom speeds in the menu). It is also more compact when powered off. The 17mm prime is definitely superior concerning the optical quality. A zoom lens is alway more versatile but If you like prime lenses, the 17mm works really well.

    • @Justine93Q
      @Justine93Q 8 років тому

      thanks for you reply :) another question, which prime lens do u think i should get for a starter? 17/25mm? :D

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому

      +Justine Q personally I prefer the field of view of the 17mm. With the 25mm I often wish for something wider especially when travelling or in the streets. With the 25mm however it is easier to take environmental portraits (useful if you have a family and kids you want to photograph).

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому

      +cellolover98 the original E-M10 has the same image quality (same sensor). The E-M10 II has a better stabilisation system, better EVF and some extra features like focus bracketing for example. But if you want to save some money, the original E-M10 is still a great camera.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому +1

      +Jeff Waweru After the E-M1's firmware the performance is very similar. I like the option to decrease the brightness of the image so that you can see the outlines better. Overall I think that it is effective and helpful plus the EVF on the E-M10 II is very nice.

    Looking into purchasing this camera, but want to know if I can comfortably use the lens (the M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm II R) that comes with it instead of needing to purchase another one right away. What lenses were used in this video? What do you recommend? Thank you in advance!

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  6 років тому

      The 14-42mm is a decent kit lens to start with. But if later on you want superior sharpness or more subject separation (more shallow depth of field), then you will need to invest in other lenses with faster apertures.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

    Hi Mathieu! Thanks for the awesome video, very complete and informatice! I'm about to buy one of these, but i can choose between two offers, one with the 14-42 II R and the other with the 14-42 EZ pancake like the one you use in the video. What do you think about the EZ quality and power zoom? Especially on the power zoom i have some doubts as i would prefer a manual operated zoom..what's your opinion on that? Thanks and keep it up!!

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  7 років тому

      The power zoom is not that bad and you can set three different speeds in the menu. Th EX version has the obvious advantage of being more compact, otherwise go with the one that is the cheapest ;-)

    Thanks a lot for the video Mathieu. I am relatively new in photography. Considering buying either this M10 Mark ii, Lumix G7 or Sony A6000.
    In my opinion, a6000 is getting old. G7 looks nice but very video-focused. M10 Mark ii seems like a good option. What do you think ?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  7 років тому

      If you are not interested in video, the E-M10 II is an optimal choice: nice design, good EVF, excellent 5-axis stabilisation and vast choice of lenses to use.

    Would you say I should buy this new or get a used e-m5 Mark ii for the same price. I don't need the weather sealing

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому

      +Alex Myara the E-M10 II is basically the same as the E-M5 II except the lack of weather sealing and high res shot. The LCD screen doesn't flip on the side (just tilting) and the EVF is slightly smaller. So would say yes, go for the E-M10 II.

    Hey
    How is the a6000 as compared to the M10 II ?
    I'm an advanced amateur considering a holistic camera that could be a nice dslr replacement.
    Does the bigger sensor on the a6000 make that much of a difference?
    Is the lens stabilization enough or should I opt for the M10 II?
    Appreciate the detailed review :)

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому

      The a6000 has slightly more dynamic range but the difference is not huge.
      Not all Sony lenses have optical stabilisation so it depends on which one you get. The lens choice is also more limited in comparison to micro four thirds.
      With the E-M1 II, you get stabilisation with any lenses you want.

      I'm not going to be looking at buying a lot of lenses.
      Considering that I buy the basic bundle that has lenses around 16-50 and 55-200mm for both cameras, which one do you think is a better bet for an overall better camera. Which one would you pick (as a better dslr replacement)?

    Do you think it makes sense to buy older em5? I am new to photography and dont want to spend so much money on a new camera so I am looking for a second hand one. As the em5 is weather sealed it would be a benefit for me as I will shoot when travelling.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  7 років тому

      The old E-M5 is still a fine camera but many things have improved with the newer models (buttons, dials, EVF, AF, high ISO etc). However if you find it for a very good deal, I would say go for it.

    How is low light performance? I'm looking for a camera I can take on my trip to Italy, so I'll be shooting indoors and in the woods when I'm home. I have it down to between the OM-D E-M10 (mark I or II) or the Sony A6000.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому

      Concerning IQ at high ISO, the a6000 has a slight advantage but the E-M10 II has great sensor stabilisation that allows you to use slower shutter speeds in low light and keep your ISO low (unless you are shooting people and you need a faster shutter speed). You also have a better selection of lenses for the E-M10 II from Olympus and Panasonic.
      The a6000 has a faster AF especially in continuous mode.

      +Rod Clarke the E-M1 has a better grip/ergonomics, is completely weather sealed and has faster continuous shooting inC-AF which makes it more suitable for sports. If you don't need any of these features, go with the E-M10 II ;)

    Mark ii ou mark iii ? Plutôt tenté daller vers le ii pour le boîtier métal . Le ii n'a pas la 4k mais je me demande si j'en aurais l'utilité et si la différence est très notable , je ne connais pas trop ce domaine . Le iii possède les dernières technologies il y a des comparatifs qui expliquent toutes les différences sur le net entre ii et iii . Mais malgré ces " améliorations je pense quand même aller vers le ii pour son boîtier en métal , pour le fait qu'il soit plus compact, poignée plus fine avec la possibilité d'y ajouter un grip plus large , qui n'est pas possible sur le 3 car la poignée est plus épaisse et olympus n'a pas prévu pour l'instant dy ajouter une poignée optionnelle . Le ii est en métal et est pourtant plus léger de 20g et plus compact , donc voilà pour l'instant mon choix est le 2 , à moins que quelqu'un me donne son avis et m'explique pourquoi je devrais prendre le iii 🙂

    Hi Mathieu
    (I'n now using the NikonD90) I want to buy a smaller camera which can take both good pictures and videos, so after researches I'm in between Canon g7 mark ii, Olympus OM D EM mark ii and Olympus OM D EM 10 (this last one more for the lower price). G7 and Olympus mark ii look similar for some features but different for others.
    Which would you recommend (mostly for portraits and daily use)?
    (I don't need 4K, most important is a good price/quality)
    THANK YOU

      So are you hesitating between the G7 and E-M10 mark II?
      The G7 is better for video even if you use it in Full HD. It has better ergonomics and is straight forward to use.
      The E-M10 II has a lovely design and has 5-axis stabilisation. Image quality for stills is similar.

      I like the GX7 a lot. It's an old model now but it has great ergonomics and the IQ is very similar to the G7 and E-M10 II. The IBIS is not as good as the E-M10 though, but if you find it for a low price, it certainly worth to consider.

    Hi Mathieu, would you go for em10 ii or panasonic g85?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

      The G85 has a better grip (more comfortable with larger lenses), is weather sealed and has better video capabilities and options (4K, mic input, etc). If you are not interested in video, then the E-M1 II is an interesting choice: nice design, comfortable to use, compact. Both have good IQ and excellent image stabilisation.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  8 років тому +1

      The E-M10 II has a few advantages like in-body stabilisation (5-axis), a compact body and smaller lenses so if you look for the best portability it is a good choice.
      The X-T10 has a slightly faster AF (especially in C-AF) and excellent colours via the picture profiles (film simulation mode).
      Fuji lenses are excellent but you have more choice with the micro four thirds system (including cheap prime lens like the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 or the Olympus 45mm f/1.8).

      The E-M5 II is weather sealed, as sligthly more controls on the body, a sligthly larger viewfinder, some extra functions like the high Res Shot and a more advanced 5-axis stabilisation system that is also compatible with Sync IS (if you intend to use the 300mm Pro or the new 12-100mm f/4).
      If you don't need any of the features mentioned above, the E-M10 II will give you the same IQ.

      +Jose Rosas the kit lens is not great and personally I don't like the electronic zoom. The 12-50mm is a better kit lens and has better macro capabilities. If you want higher quality, it is either the 12-35mm 2.8 (Panasonic) or the 12-40mm 2.8 (Olympus). Or a few primes that are compact and with excellent IQ. There are also a couple of all-purpose zoom lenses if you like more versatility.

      The E-M10 II has a better EVF, better stabilisation (5-axis vs 3 axis), better C-AF performance and more robust buttons and dials. IQ is basically the same and the original E-M10 remains a very good camera and that price is definitely attractive.

      The a6000 and X-T10 have a better AF but no in-body stabilisation. Their APS-C sensors will give you something more in terms of dynamic range (but not a lot). The X-T10 has very nice colours. The E-M10 II is more compact (as the lenses) and the 5-axis stabilisation is a big plus. It also depends for what use you are considering these cameras. The lens selection is important too. Micro four thirds has the most complete offering, Fuji lenses are excellent but the Sony has a less interesting selection.

    • @CockpitPress
      @CockpitPress 8 років тому

      The E-M10 II can do very well. In terms of IQ the a6000 or the X-T10 can give you something more (larger sensor) but again the E-M10 II has a more compact system and some advantages like IBIS.

      The a6000 has a slight advantage concerning IQ at high ISO and dynamic range. It has a faster AF especially in continuous mode.
      The E-M10 II has great sensor stabilisation that allows you to use slower shutter speeds in low light and keep your ISO low (unless you are shooting people and you need a faster shutter speed). You also have a better selection of lenses from Olympus and Panasonic for the E-M10 II.

      ***** I reply for Kurt but I will say same thing to you. I want to buy Mark II. For me is perfect - smaller than M5, gain 5-axis stabilisation and better wheels on the top.
      BUT when I saw photos I thought my senses are wrong because photos from this camera looks bad. No so sharp and with bad colors. So I compared both versions (10 and 10II) and I was right.
      M10II SUCK on image quality. Photos are blurred with bad color reproduction. It's not my opinion, just choose
      www.dpreview.com/articles/4887393042/bang-for-the-buck-olympus-om-d-e-m10-ii-review/8 both cameras on studio on dpreview.com and check, f.e., cards on the left bottom corner. And you see nightmare from M10II.
      It looks beautiful, it has got many nice features, but in two most important things it sucks so much. Time from off to shoot photo and, it is the most important, PHOTO QUALITY.
      I don't know what's going on, Olympus.

    the current trend seems to be for manufacturers to incrementally add features to cameras every year or so, rather than bring out something that is new and ground breaking. This is fine if you don't own the previous model but must hack off people who bought the previous model less than a year ago.

    Hi Mathieu, i've seen a few of your reviews and i like the fact that you are impartial on them, so i would like to hear your advice about getting a Sony a6000 or the Olympus EM10 Mark II, thanks in advance!
    PD: the sony is about 100USD cheaper right now with a 16-50mm len against the 14-42mm len for Olympus

      The a6000 has sligthly more dynamic range because of the larger sensor and the AF is very fast if you need to shoot moving subjects/action/sports. Video quality is a little bit better.
      The E-M10 II in-body stabilisation, lots of extra features (time-lapse, live composite, etc) and a larger choice of lenses.

    would you say this or the nikon D5500?

      +muchomochi I haven't tested the D5500 so I can't really answer you. The E-M10 II definitely has some advantage: more compact, 5-axis stabilisation just to name a few.

    G7 vs OMD 10? which one? with everything that is included, build quality, image quality ect! someone please help!

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

      Do you care about video? If so, the G7 has better quality and 4K.

      Mathieu Gasquet ok, I'm kind of slow, but better quality and video. So do you mean it has better image quality and video? I know that the 4k video destroys the OMD 10 ii, but for photography still quality. and would you ever do a video comparion? thank you for a reply, I didn't think you would.

      It is the lowest native ISO but you also have the Low extended setting which corresponds to ISO 100.

    do think its a bad idea to take a camera like this to shoot video in snowy wet environments?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому

      +Jackson Peyton it's not weather sealed but it won't mind a few drops of snow or shooting at -2/3°C. However if the conditions are more extreme it could be a problem. So it depends on how are the snowy wet environments where you live :)

      Sorry to badger you but im deciding between the OM-D E-M10 and a lumix GH-3 for shooting lots of video, what do you think is best? If you arent familiar with the GH-3 then its ok.

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  9 років тому

      Lumix GH3 is better overall. Stronger and high quality video codec, lots of options for video shooting, multi angle screen etc, less problems with moirè and aliasing. The only thing the E-M10 II does better is the stabilization.

    great reviews on here. I look to buy this E-M10 II or the new Lumix gx80. 4K on the Lumix aside, any advise on which to choose will be great. thanks!

      the E-M10 II has a better EVF (larger and with no "rainbow effect"). I also prefer the color rendition when using OOC JPGs. The GX80 has a faster AF (not a huge difference but it's there), more advanced touch screen capabilities and a more user-friendly interface and menu system.
