For any of you trying this out here's a HUGE tip:Do not whistle inhaling air.Exhale while whistling or else your vocal cords will be severely damaged.Hope this helped as well.
i can do both...i mastered the inhaling better than exhaling. but i'm using both..the inhaling side can go higher without a limit if you happen to master it.
+Freya Casey lol I mean, it sounds good, but I don't know how useful it is. fun party trick though. sidenote, your videos have improved my ability to belt in the car while I'm driving. and I used this video earlier to hit a few notes in JoJo's Too Little Too Late. even though my range I'd say is either Base or Baritone, I still hit it. :P thank you!!!!
Eve Sav Wow should've thought of that one myseld. Im always wishing I knew what those damg birds are always talking about. Time to make some COMMUNICATION lol
Lucia Del Duca you know, my opera teacher says- anyone can produce notes, even high notes, what's the real deal- you need to come through to the audience emotionally. So it's not important how high you can sing, the quality is. Greetings from Vienna.
China Kweess wtf yes she 100% can!! She’s famous for it. Mariah is the one getting old and loosing her whistle register. Ariana grande is one of only a couple people in the music industry that doesn’t need auto-tune and is natural.
China Kweess yeah she can but she chooses not to do it a lot because she doesn’t want to ruin her voice like Mariah did. She does do high falsettos most of the time because she is responsible with her vocal chords.
Not lying I did this and my mom came in and said "What's the matter?" I told her I was trying to do whistle tone and she said not to frighten her like that and waste her time lmao
This video is one of the better videos to explain the whistle technique and I will tell you why: It's a common a misconception that whistle notes have to be "super high". It's the technique and the timbre that truly establishes if it's whistle. Anything in the 5-7 octave range can be a whistle. It can also overlap with head voice(falsetto) and VERY rarely chest voice. But those are usually on the lower ends of the octaves with chest voice tapping out around 5 and head voice around 6. Whistle goes beyond that to 7, the highest octaves the piano can play. I can sing a the same note in my head and chest voice, but the timbre will be different. The same applies to my head voice and whistle register. I think what a lot of people expected was for her to sing a lot of notes in the 7th register. However, it isn't practical for most beginning to use this technique to emulate the 7th register until proper technique is obtained. Most vocal teachers will have you expand your lower range before expanding your higher range. There are exceptions, of course, but typically starting in your tessitura (the range most comfortable) you warm up going up about mid way to the top of your register, then warm up going downwards, expanding your diaphragm and lowering your jaw while approaching the notes from "above". Most of us, myself included, have the habit of reaching towards notes, which commonly leads to falling under the pitch or flat. Approaching your lower notes from above not only helps with intonation, but it also warms the vocal chords up. At this time, you warm up going past the mid range and into upper registers. If your throat hurts, you're breathing from your chest and most likely pinching your throat closed. You want your stomach(diaphragm) to expand and have a mostly vertical approach when singing. This will allow better control and comfort. If you're breathing from your diaphragm correctly, your throat shouldn't hurt but it will feel as though you did some ab workouts. I hope this helps.
Yeah our dogs are always dumbasses, that's why I'm at this video lmao. So in the next 5 minutes when they're being naughty or annoying I can just whistle at them.
Watching videos like this, and practising almost every minute everyday will surely make you able to do whistles (flageoletto) yourselves. She's correct in holding your breath. It helps to contain enough air supply to support the creation whistle as well as it set the larynx in a relax state. She is also correct on not putting pressure to your vocal cords in attempting to reach those high notes. I committed those mistakes through my practices and got extreme swelling on the soft palette area. But try to train yourself to be comfortable in singing through your pharyngeal/soft palette section (that is, the area at the back of our mouth). Then produce the sound in this roof section by making the roof of your mouth a dome-like space, through which resonance can be produced. Then channel the sound through this roof-section (soft palette) toward the sides of your nose (I mean, to feel the vibration there; or somewhat feeling the sound is released in the sides of the nose). With this, you'll feel the sound is produced from the back, arches along the roof section (not sure if above or below of the soft palette), and released through the sides of the nose. You may also try to channel the sound in the area between the eyebrows, simultaneously in your cheeks's muscles right beneath the eyes. Since whistle register is also called super head voice, its sound is undoubtedly produced right at the higher sections of our very heads. With this I can reach D7-A7 but can't always hold the notes to produce music a la Mariah Carey. Sometimes I do, but rarely. And I can't predict what note exactly will be produced. I just measure them through a note reading app. But what I noticed is that I have a blank spot, that is, I can reach C6-F#6, sometime G6 (thru resonance in the soft palette) and D7-A7 (resonating in the nose and cheeks). I only produce A6-Bb6 by accident. And able to hit D8 by a chance, but gave me a slicing sensation in my throat; so never did that again. Hope this can help others who are curious how to do whistle tones, as I was two years ago. For now, I just keep on practicing it -- not every minute though, but every day.
Thank you. Focusing my attention and air through the soft palette and nose, I was able to get up to a G5. Wasn't able to get this high before. Although not at the complete goal yet, I'm happy to know I've gotten a few more note than I could before!
Rachel Gerrard men can be tenors. I can't do this. It _does_ have to do with voice types. Not everyone can do whistle notes, otherwise it wouldn't be so special.
love you! thank you so much! I got sick over a year ago and lost my voice, and when it started coming back I was able to hit these really high notes that i never hit before, but didn't know how to keep doing it. they would come and go, but now it's getting easier. thanks again :)
The whistle register is really meant for our fight and flight response. It’s a defense mechanism that we’re all born with. Children use it all the time when they are playing or if they hurt themselves.
yes after i started meddling with whistle register i cant stop but listen when kids are screaming 😂😂 it's literally a scream but controlled. i cant really do it though. im trying but i have problem with straining. i can get to D6 on a really good day. otherwise i tend to push from my throat. i can feel like there's a whole other space i can use when i do it correctly. just that no sound come out. ive read it takes time for vocal cords to come together and produce sound like it should, idk when for me lmao
I've always been able to whistle note, but it's a lot higher then hers.. Is it cause I'm fourteen? Also I can sound like a flute sometimes, how do I control pitch while singing
You just practice, I’ve always had good pitch and whistles too and for me I didn’t really need to practice that much but yeah I would just say practice on a piano/keyboard if u don’t have one then go online search like keyboard notes or something and just hear the note and without scooping try to hit the note first try, like don’t start a bit lower but just do it not like aaaaaaaaaaa more like a a a a a a a if u get what I mean
Pickled Children We we’re doing a show in Atlantic City 1 yr. when the smoke alarms went off in the casino theatre. While we were all leaving from backstage, I started mirroring the note of the smoke alarm, & my cast mates were like “Wow, you sound just like the smoke alarm! How do you do that?”
Maybe you have natural polyphonic tones in ypur voice check out polyphonic singing if you haven't already! Xoxo and since you are a year older now is ypur voice still the same? Or how has it changed? X
Wow I watched like 30 videos of how to do that and after watching THIS video I can actually do it... the whistle tones were the icing on the cake for my vocals
Difference between boys and girls Girl:(tries to hit whistle note) Mom: nah she must have lost two thousand followers. Boy:(tries to hit whistle note) Mom:OMG are you ok son??are you dead????
Out of all the videos I've watched on whistle register, your video was the one that managed to get me to produce a whistle squeek, thankyou. Also your videos on vocal control are the best.
i have put layers in front of my door in the hope my mum wont call a mental hospital but i am desperate to get my whistle notes then i can sing anything
NihilisticEntropy how on earth is that homophobic? You are the idiot. Why did you assume he is gay? Is it because he wanted to learn a whistle? Anyone can do what the fuck they want without being questioned about sexuality. That is my point. Don't assume someone's gender dumbass.
The True Dolphin He never explained that it's a joke so how would you know? He never explained so i assume he is assuming someone's gender based on their actions which is not really nice. Now begone from me donkey.
It does really work when I was in my studies I stopped while I was student teaching and went back to it . It works. I looked at many whistle tone singing videos and this was the greatest being I am a vocal instructor. You can further the study by using siren sounds , and this time of the year use a witches cackle too. this stretches the vocal chords ability to stretch the notes. practice makes perfect. Thanks Faye.
I can really do whistle notes, but I've been able to do it when I was younger and I actually didn't know that it was an actual thing until earlier this year, I always just thought it was really col, cuz I was the only one in my class able to do it. Now that I actually know what it is, I want to try and control it better, but every time I try to practice, my mom yells at me and goes "stop doing that high pitched shit!" XD
Try learning through inhale. I struggled for years tying to learn. Whistle voice is the only one that really goes both inhale, and exhale... Exhale sounds better, but inhale can get you there.
To access the register, I found the best technique is to inhale, and then to do the whistle/squeaky sound on the exhale. I've been struggling to do anything above D6 and I found this out today, and I got it immediately.
I have achieved 1st high school bass in the state of Tennessee, now I’m moving in to range so I can expand my possiblities. Don’t lump everyone together and call them out on something that might not be true.
Johnny Cuff stop? I love doing it, you shouldn't say rhat I love making my voice range longer and I love singing. You can't just say "stop" I mean it's true some people can hit it and such. But wanting to learn isn't bad. If you learn a whistle tone of really just a really high note you can control yur voice better, it is a nice skill, and you can earn many things from it. Don't put people don't, I'm sorry but this comment is ridiculous and unnecessary.
Thanks so much. I found this by myself with no explanation, and I was wondering if this was it. Still need to practice singing this register. I am working on mastering it and when I do, I'll add it to my official vocal range.
Thank you Thank you THANK YOU for explaining how to train the Whistle Register! I saw other great singers but you are the first who could explain it really good. Its a secret, that we have to use very less air but when I look at whistle Singers you can see that they are all relaxed in singing. I know it will takes time before it sounds good, but until then I practice it with closed mouth. Its working great and I am sure that my neighbours are happy about it too ;) I am looking forward to have in the future the opportunity to sing with Whistle Voice :) Greetings Kris
yeah its super head voice, stopping most of your breath is the OPPOSITE of whistle, whistle is given its power with air while super head voice doesnt need air, shv cant reach the same height as whistle (which naturally lies in the 7th octave) shv is used for the sixth octave (and SOMETIMES the 7th octave but it doesnt sound good)
It means you are contracting your throat and swallowing muscles and adding unecessary tension. You need to develop a neutral larynx and a decent supported head voice to try whistling.
+Freya Casey well I can inhale and exhale but inhaling to produce whistle notes is much easier than exhaling (I usually fail at that because I emit huge amounts of air and end up cracking; I need to control my air flow.)
That's actually.....rlly easy.........thank you. I watched another one earlier that was like 15 minutes AND has a part two AND had a crap ton of steps just to PREPARE your vocal chords to do the whistle tone.
Tips: Always go in a tune that you feel is the highest, and won't create voice cracks, maybe high pitched, normal, low pitched, soft, etc, and go a bit higher, without changing your voice.
can everybody whistle towards the 7th octave or only the 6th? because when i try this method i can only go upto a e6, but many others can go into the 7th, but e6 seems to be my limit
Chloe Lynn I don't think you're singing whistle if it stops there. E6 usually is where the head voice stops for a female so I think you're just singing really high head voice. I don't think the maker of this video is singing whistle either cause it doesn't sound like that when Mariah does it. It's supposed to sound like a literal whistle, like a bird singing. The thing with whistle register is that it's a disconnected register, it doesn't feel like falsetto/head voice at all.
I can't even do the 6th, but I can do the 7th (it might even be 8th, I have to get one o those apps to find out because I'm tone deaf lol) . Not sure why
I actually achieved it through other videos and some websites but this video demonstrates the bases to it. I can pass you a site that really helped me if you want to check it out: takelessons.com/blog/sing-like-mariah-carey-z02
in 7th grade i had to sing the queen of the night aria, and i was so young i barely knew how to sing it. i would like to try it again now that i have more musical knowledge, and this video was very helpful

Yes people dont inhale please my voice got damaged and now i cant go higher than c6 in falsetto
I don't get it? How can someone inhale while whistling?!😂 don't you need air inhaled already in order to whistle...? Sorry, I'm curious. Teehee
i can do both...i mastered the inhaling better than exhaling. but i'm using both..the inhaling side can go higher without a limit if you happen to master it.

Too bad I'm an alto and can't do it :'( lucky sopranos :(
Nothing to do with voice type - even men can do this.
Rachel Gerrard men can be tenors. I can't do this. It _does_ have to do with voice types. Not everyone can do whistle notes, otherwise it wouldn't be so special.
I know sopranos, mezzos, tenors and baritones who have whistle voice.

Best explanation of how to achieve whistle register I’ve come across. Thank you! First time I’ve been able to access it, thanks to you.
I can get up to a G6 on a good day, but I would like to be able to make it stable and dependable.
can men do this too? ._.
Felix Chandra yea, I know I can
Felix Chandra yes because i have whistle register
Felix Chandra Yes, Adam Lopez is man and he hit the Guinnes world record for the highest note so :D
I'm a man and I'm doing this from childhood
yes. it's even harder for men, but it is possible.
I've always been able to whistle note, but it's a lot higher then hers.. Is it cause I'm fourteen? Also I can sound like a flute sometimes, how do I control pitch while singing

Maybe you have natural polyphonic tones in ypur voice check out polyphonic singing if you haven't already! Xoxo and since you are a year older now is ypur voice still the same? Or how has it changed? X
Control your pitch by pushing the note up and down. Once you get used setting your voice to hit the notes you want, it's all muscle memory after that.
Wow I watched like 30 videos of how to do that and after watching THIS video I can actually do it... the whistle tones were the icing on the cake for my vocals

I'm a boy and want to do this, do you have any videos I can watch or tips
NihilisticEntropy what does being gay have to do with this? You sound like those typical idiot guys that are insecure about their sexuality.
NihilisticEntropy how on earth is that homophobic? You are the idiot. Why did you assume he is gay? Is it because he wanted to learn a whistle? Anyone can do what the fuck they want without being questioned about sexuality. That is my point. Don't assume someone's gender dumbass.
ChimChim Kookie hey, did you know this has nothing to do with gender (or sexuality)? maybe you should stop being an idiot and be able to take a joke.
The True Dolphin He never explained that it's a joke so how would you know? He never explained so i assume he is assuming someone's gender based on their actions which is not really nice. Now begone from me donkey.
It was a joke
Explained Easiest method of " Whistle Register " ....... Love ❤from India 🇮🇳
"hello ladies" im a boy. Should I leave?
I can almost sing the phantom of the opera high note now!!!! 😄😄😄😄 I'M SO HAPPY!!!! My range is middle class to B6 right now
Watching this, I laughed and my fart whistled. I tried “letting the tiniest air out...”
Same. I talk to my friends with whistles now 😂
step 1 to learning whistle register) Sing in whistle register. Wow thanks didn't think of that!
"Ok ladies" did you just assume my gender?
I'm been dreaming about this my whole life and you helped me thank you so much
i'm already able to sing whistle tone and my friends didn't believe me until I sang it in front of them and they kept quiet 😂
Try learning through inhale. I struggled for years tying to learn. Whistle voice is the only one that really goes both inhale, and exhale... Exhale sounds better, but inhale can get you there.
1:35 Me when I try to sing whistle tones
To access the register, I found the best technique is to inhale, and then to do the whistle/squeaky sound on the exhale. I've been struggling to do anything above D6 and I found this out today, and I got it immediately.
this is old but once you get the inhaled whistle how to translate it to exhaled because i cant do much via exhaling
people need to stop wanting to sing 7 or 8 octaves. you can have all the range in the world and have a bad voice
It's fun to practice though
That's actually not true. Due to the immense pressure of the note, it will be easier to keep in tune once you can control it.
There`s no such thing as a "bad voice"
Thanks so much. I found this by myself with no explanation, and I was wondering if this was it. Still need to practice singing this register. I am working on mastering it and when I do, I'll add it to my official vocal range.
I can do it...😁 practice that every day even if your parents think that you're dying😂 ...
Army💜 same haha
Wow super helpful. The holding breath thing works!! Got it on the first try that way
I can do the whistle Thank you for teaching me i can know do it! I hope you get more likes and subs
She didnt do a whistle so... there u have that...
Thank you for your tips, Freya. They have made me a better singer!
I just sound like a teapot
Thank you Thank you THANK YOU for explaining how to train the Whistle Register! I saw other great singers but you are the first who could explain it really good. Its a secret, that we have to use very less air but when I look at whistle Singers you can see that they are all relaxed in singing.
I know it will takes time before it sounds good, but until then I practice it with closed mouth. Its working great and I am sure that my neighbours are happy about it too ;)
I am looking forward to have in the future the opportunity to sing with Whistle Voice :)
Greetings Kris
excuse me, im not an expert but i dont think that's whistle register
Khussal Zamlahani it's not. She's just using super Head voice.
Can someone elaborate
What????
yeah its super head voice, stopping most of your breath is the OPPOSITE of whistle, whistle is given its power with air while super head voice doesnt need air, shv cant reach the same height as whistle (which naturally lies in the 7th octave) shv is used for the sixth octave (and SOMETIMES the 7th octave but it doesnt sound good)
Freya, I gotta thank you so much! I was able for the first time to reach it! God bless you!!
*Video starts*
"Hey ladies"
Every guy in a 5 mile radius:
Aight imma head out
Thank you for all the videos you posted and the hard work behind them.
What if my throat muscles hurt?
It means you are contracting your throat and swallowing muscles and adding unecessary tension. You need to develop a neutral larynx and a decent supported head voice to try whistling.
Thank you for explaining. I have been trying whistling out... now I got the technique........
I can do this naturally oml
Maes -
Same! I didn’t even know I was doing whistle notes until this video 😂 I just thought that I had a high range lol
You’re blessed
Thank you! And for a wonderful inspiring quote in the end!✨👍🏻🌷
I can sing up to a Bb6, but it's different from my normal voice, lol instead of pushing air out I push air in. Is that normal?
+Freya Casey well I can inhale and exhale but inhaling to produce whistle notes is much easier than exhaling (I usually fail at that because I emit huge amounts of air and end up cracking; I need to control my air flow.)
+Ashley oh no honey. it's very bad!! try some other tips!
Lil' Mister Cat Okay :o
Ashley okay
Ummm idk lol😂😂
That's actually.....rlly easy.........thank you. I watched another one earlier that was like 15 minutes AND has a part two AND had a crap ton of steps just to PREPARE your vocal chords to do the whistle tone.
ladies? I'm a guy.
Chloe Lynn I watched a video where all of Ariana's whistles were in the 6th octave.
I can't even do the 6th, but I can do the 7th (it might even be 8th, I have to get one o those apps to find out because I'm tone deaf lol) . Not sure why
F6 is my ceiling right now. A week ago it was Eb6 so it's improving.
Keep practicing!
if you're doing true whistle then you're already in the 7th octave
This is so helpful . Thank u so much for the video. Im excited to practice
baby girl what is you doing!!!! that's not WR that's SHV😂😂😂
Thanks lots, first video that actually show how to sing whistle notes and not a practice session.
Did she just assume my gender?
She just assumed my gender!
Smh.
lol just kidding but as a male I’m interested in this lol
Great vid
Thank you so much omg! I’ve been trying to get my whistles back and I finally got them!
ANYONE ACHIEVE THIS? 😂 IM TALKING TO THE PPL WHO WATCHED THIS
I actually achieved it through other videos and some websites but this video demonstrates the bases to it. I can pass you a site that really helped me if you want to check it out: takelessons.com/blog/sing-like-mariah-carey-z02
Cristina Lagman I actually did achieve it! The best tip she gave was the squeaking one
You explained it perfectly. Now I get it. And I did it, I was able to produce a short whistle sound/note.
3:11 ummm... is this a singing video😂😂😂
*Nailed it!*
*Yaassss*
I have to literally scream to hit the whistle register
I try this I'm still practicing
I sound like a dying animal 😂😂😂😂
This is the most helpful thing ever omg. I've been trying in vain for like 1 year but could never get a proper clear explanation!
I do when a cockroach go in my room...
Minnie Ripperton and Deniece Williams are the queens of the whistle register.
tnx to this Freya! I find it really helpful,
edit: I just hit C7!! BTW I'm a man. 😂
Me too!!!!!
in 7th grade i had to sing the queen of the night aria, and i was so young i barely knew how to sing it. i would like to try it again now that i have more musical knowledge, and this video was very helpful
