Some background. This is one of (if not) the first time the main protagonist of a show murdered someone on American TV. It also happened on Oz, but that was mostly an ensemble without a lead. HBO execs begged the creator David Chase and the director not to put the murder scene in there as they felt they were going to ruin the series by having the viewers not watch anymore. Chase got his way and this is viewed by most as the birth of the anti-hero or bad guy lead on TV and is considered one of the most important episodes in TV history.
Yes, and HBO relented and let them do it, but made Chase put in the scene where its revealed that the rat is also a drug dealer- somehow in the exec's minds that made it more acceptable that Tony kills him.
lol I was writing just about that. Kind of funny to think that they were worried about audience reaction to an antihero murdering someone, but obviously they couldn't know.
Everybody in this episode was confessing. Tony confessing to Meadow he’s in the mob; Meadow confessing about speed; Carm about her complicity in violence; the priest confessing his sexual attraction. But confessing the truth only brings them the redemption or closeness that they were each wanting from that act for a moment. They each ended up feeling more trapped, isolated, disillusioned, and hopeless in the end, having to accept they can’t trust one another.
I wish the Sopranos reactions could be twice per week! I know you guys have loads going on, I just can’t wait to see you guys get further into the show. Congratulations on the success with your channel! Well deserved!
Thanks so much for the kind words! As things stand, we’re doing our best to get through all of Barry. Our hope is that once we do that, we’ll start to release sopranos twice a week! Hope you stick with us 👍🏾
In regards to that drip in the wine, I was raised Catholic, never saw a priest prepare the wine, but my go to instinct is that he was dripping holy water. Like it didn't cross my mind that it could be anything other than holy water when I watched this show. Now after y'all's reaction and me googling, I feel certain that it's holy water. Apparently it's a thing to mix holy water to the wine for mass. Edit: In regards to the priest and Carmella, unless you're asexual, even if you take a vow you are still human.
Tony's tell when he's lying, the slight smile is an involuntary emotional boost known as "duper's delight", as Tony feels the lies are successful, the relief, pleasure and sense of superiority is what causes him to smile like that. So many little things with this show I could watch through it 500 times and I bet I'd notice something new every time
"His a lot closer to his daughter than he is with his son" Yeah, Meadow is Tony's little paradise, maybe what he values most in his life. Through all the show y'all would see that.
Not a big deal, but Tony confirms the guy is the rat when he sees the messed up lips on the bust. He commented when talking to Christopher how the guy could never get lips right.
That one guy was hilarious thinking Tony was going to give the rat a talking to. Also Tony cant be honest with Meadow unless he wants to make her an accomplice. Meadow was super annoying constantly asking for honesty, when she knows he couldn't be.
In real life, the mobsters would be getting caught for some of the murders in this show. It's a great show, but that one part requires some suspension of disbelief.
The old couple wouldn’t have been witnesses. Witness what? The assassin was hiding, they wouldn’t have seen him. It would’ve been over and he’d have gone before realising what had happened 🤷🏻♂️ No. Petrulio’s intent was interrupted. He was simply distracted by them. That’s all.

Wow that’s wild, This episode truly is TV history- thanks so much for the insight!

Forget the fight club jokes, there is no mafia is the rule. There can be no acknowledgment of its existence.
Mafia?! What Mafia???

That was the most sexual communion ever 😂
Except the original one. Oy, the homo-eroticism around that table!
Probably the most important episode of television ever produced
Really starts to take off in season 2
