What Livia was watching on TV was the 1967 Newark Riot, which is why she tells Tony to take a bat with him when he leaves. I love how the writers casually referred to that historic event taking place WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE of them, but showed how unimportant it was to the Sopranos. The National Guard was called in to occupy the city with tanks in the streets, in 4 days ~25 people were killed and hundreds were seriously injured, much of the city was destroyed by fires. The wealthy, the middle class, and much of the working class fled, and businesses abandoned the city, never to return. This episode subtly shows how incredibly insular Tony’s subculture is. They’re not afraid of the chaos, the violence, the arson, or looting. It has nothing to do with The Family “business.” His dad was arrested, but Livia says it’s just because “they pick on the Italians.” Whoever needed to be payed off is paid off, and he’s home with ice cream in a few hours. The riots, loss of life, the economic losses, the social & political & demographic upheaval are completely outside the Sopranos bubble. Gambling, stealing, arson, extortion, murder, etc. are all business as usual.
Just an fyi that the creator of the show, David Chase, has talked about how his relationship with his mother was complicated. So a lot of that was worked into the show through Tony and Livia.
Can’t wait for you guys to continue this! Janice will become more fleshed out in the future and I can’t wait to see how you guys react to that relationship
Also, love that you guys love Back to the Future! I knew there was a reason I liked you guys. Great taste. That is an all time great movie and Doc Brown did start the Florence nightingale effect as a thing. The real Florence did not have a romantic relationship with any patients.
Your observations are very spot on with the filming and style. The whole show is great, however, seasons 3-6 are levels above this. You will notice the difference in quality as the show progresses.
Season 1 is the warmest in terms of color palette. Pretty sure it's the one that uses the tilted angles the most, particularly in front of Satriale's, which I liked. They go away as time goes on. David Chase likes directing that doesn't call too much attention upon itself, almost like the opposite of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and as he gains more resources and experience you'll see that reflected in the evolution of the show. You already see some of that on how he told the directors to keep the camera very still in the therapy sessions, or his refusal to do a score for the show, he didn't want things to be too explicit and as the show progresses it becomes more like that. That being said, that "jarring editing" you mention, while it's not as overt as in this season, pops up from time to time, and I suspect is part of his sensibilities as a creator, since you can trace some of that forceful, sudden style in his writing too, but I won't get too much into that because the only obvious examples I can think of come from later episodes.
Lot more subtle than his dad? Did you guys not watch the first episode? Tony & Chrissy literally ran a guy over & beat the shit out of him in front of many witnesses.

Newark never really recovered from the riots and the aftermath even with the revitalization efforts,,,,I live here and it SUCKS
There was nothing like Sopranos at the time. When it was coming out, every Sunday night was an event
“White rabbit” playing at the end was perfect
Fun fact one of the kids that was chasing baby tony soprano in the flashback is actor Michael b jordan
Oh wow.

what a masterpiece this show is ..
Great reactions to AJ talking to Livia, it was sooo funny😂
You guys are awesome! Loving your Sopranos reactions. I really enjoy your detailed conversations about the story and characters 💛
I just noticed that there is a baby in Tony's flashbacks. That is his younger sister.

My favorite show , good to see you liking it and get it
no spoilers of course but yes, dream sequences are definitely a thing in Sopranos World.

This is a really awesome breakdown of the direction. Excited to see Chase evolve as the show does. Thank you for watching and for the knowledge 🙏🏽
@@redox.cinema Thanks to you for the great discussions!

Hey - come on now 😭
A.D.D. is overdiagnosed. Kids are distractable as a rule. And everyone has a short attention span now, because of phones and the internet.
