This is the thing that drove me crazy at the start of the pandemic. The people whining about how they couldn't do their daily things like Starbucks runs and going to Target in particular. I kept thinking that if the only thing you have to look forward to daily is going to Target, then there is a huge commercialism problem in America that needs to be addressed.

My local Target is pleasant to shop at because it's clean and organized and feels roomy. It is also restocked pretty frequently. I visited a friend in another state and she took me to her closest Target and I was so turned off. There were items left on the floor, empty shelves, poor lighting and out of date fixtures. The people in my town regard Target as a step up from our Walmart (which has also improved over the years) so the customers and patrons mostly help take care of it so we can keep having nice things.

I go to Aldi for most of groceries and go to Target for specialty things that I can't get at Aldi. I live right by a Walmart, but it's such a mess and anciety-inducing experience. The most I do at Walmart is a pick-up order

Walmart is kind of too chaotic in my opinion. There’s always screaming children, gross stuff smeared on some stuff you might try to grab, immature/uncultured people farting or burping really loud in the middle of an isle. The fitting rooms are always closed or non-existent, no full-length mirrors to even see how a jacket or a hoodie might look on you, clothes are often super disorganized. If it’s pajama set, the top will be hanging with jeans and the bottom will be in the toy section somewhere. Eventually you just give up looking for them and leave. I sometimes get harassed at the door by their staff because I don’t have a receipt, since I bought literally nothing. I didn’t find what I originally went in for. So now, they are looking at my small purse with suspicion trying to assess in their mind if I could have shoplifted a 36”flat-screen tv from their electronics section and shoved it into a 8” x 4” cross-body bag. Or if I look like I could have hidden their entire rotisserie chicken up in my anus. The store is a zoo! I go in only if I feel that there is no other choice.

Hey Michigan subscriber here 👋🏾. I used to be "obsessed" with Target during the Mossimo, Mossimo Supply, Merona Era. I still have a Mossimo 100% leather Jacket from 2007. Target clothing was affordable whether it was regular price or clearance. Not anymore, Target clothing is too expensive even on clearance most of the time. Since about 2014, Walmart clothing basics, knit wear (Time and Tru, No Boundaries) and some trendy items have been priced so great in my opinion. I love the Free Assembly line at Walmart and scored high rise wide leg jeans for $5! I've bought faux leather jeggings, knit skirt set, knit and cotton dresses, Men's corduroy shacket, flowy summer pants and tank tops. I'm sticking to Walmart because the clothing I find there on clearance can't be beat and for my lifestyle I can find the staples and basics I need at Walmart.

On the replay ,Walmart does not need to use marketing dollars ,because more people spend money at Walmart, their bottom line is the only thing they think about. They make deals with suppliers where they get units of products at such a low price that their margin is higher than Targets. I have bought many of their house brands of clothing over the years, kids clothes baby needs men's and women's clothes and I felt like they lasted just a long as other brands but for a much lower cost. The brand George is great. Also I like a 1 stop shop experience,I get my groceries ,clothes gaming, houseware etc all at once. I believe that location of store for people also has an affect of where they shop. If a Target is closer people will shop there ,if a Walmart is closer they will shop there.

Before YT, IG, and TT hauls, I loved Target. I would get up early on Sunday morning, treat myself to a Starbucks, and hit up Target.
Back in the day Massimo and Issac Mizarahi clothing line was amazing. The quality was good, and to this day, I still have certain pieces from the early 2000s.
I don't frequent Target as much as I used to. From toothpaste and laundry detergent being locked up and wanna be influencers shooting content in the store, my nerves are wreaked. Its no longer relaxing to me.

As someone living in the U.S, I think I used to like Target more because of this exact hype. I honestly prefer Walmart now, though, because of their prices, the groceries selection, and their stuff has gotten so much cuter/nicer/trendier lately. Target's items just seem overpriced to me. Why is a shirt 28$?

this was interesting! i think the coffee shop does add to the more “cozy” associations with target, and i’ve always felt like target was more comfortable. walmart feels more “cold” and like a warehouse because of some of the things you noted, the lighting, floors, shelves, etc. i used to also feel like target was more comfortable because it was less crowded, but lately every time i go to my local target, it’s just as crowded and overstimulating as walmart! i’m one of those ppl who just wants to get my stuff and get out in either store, so the ppl leisurely walking around with coffee in target sometimes annoy me 😂

When I was highschool (around 5-7 years ago) my sister and I would go to target for fun and just walk around the store. Sometimes we got Starbucks, but we mostly didn’t buy anything when we were there since I was a child with no money haha. We just enjoyed walking around looking at all the fun things they had and never went to the food section because target was more expensive than walmart or other grocery stores we went to for food. Now that I am in Canada I miss target sometimes just because I miss the environment and walking around for fun and not buying anything. Its honestly fundamentally changed the way I shop since I dont feel the need to buy something in every store I go into now. Walmarts are so crowded and unpleasant to be in so you just want to get out as soon as possible. I feel like target with the Starbucks (and the fancy pizza hut in mine) made it more like a mini mall than a grocery store like walmart. So interesting to think about and I love your videos btw!

definitely more so than the generational divide in demographics, i feel the class divide!! in addition to being a conscious consumer, i live below the poverty level, so there’s really no reason for me to be inside a target tbh. 😭
also i live in a smaller city and our target is SMALL, so i think it’s always felt more like a “specialty” store to me anyway. our store doesn’t have a starbucks, the beauty section feels exactly the same as walmart’s, the grocery section is almost nonexistent, and they removed the previously-huge media section in order to add more aisles for kitchenware.
it just doesn’t hold the same appeal it did when i was a child/teenager.

I do feel the inclination to spend more time in a target due to the well organized clean stores. But due to my social anxiety I do not wander too much and still try to only get what I needed and get out relatively quickly, but not as quick as i would go through a walmart as i have had multiple anxiety attacks when going through walmart before due to their crowded stores. I think you are right on with having a coffee shop in their stores encoraging people to take their time and feel welcome.

I agree with what you said about browsing. I have both Target and Walmart in my neighborhood. I hardly ever to to Walmart, when I go there is to pick up a few essentials and run out. But I do visit Target often, specially to browse, find a few aesthetic items, enjoy a coffee and have an experience. To me the atmosphere of Target makes me want to hangout in there and their aesthetic make me want to shop for items other than just every day essentials.

As an American, showing that you shop at Target is a form of elitism. Target is more expensive for the same exact products that you can find at Walmart. So, it’s not as much about popularity as it is about showing that you have the means to shop at Target.

Growing up, my city had three choices to to more major grocery shopping - Winn-Dixie, Walmart, and Publix. My mom favored Publix above the others specifically because the higher prices "meant better quality" and "Walmart is for poor people", so I generally didn't go to Walmart outside of select outings with friends. We got a Target near the time I was graduating, but because it was on the other side of town, my mom wouldn't bother to go because it was too far.
I think a lot of the time, perception of Walmart fell a bit in line with why she looked down on it - somehow, lower prices was considered something you would only worry about if finances were tight, it was worse quality, etc. I didn't get to shop at Walmart especially often, but my clothes always lasted years and my supplies were always good enough for my purposes. I got into crocheting and could spend $2-3 on skeins of yarn, my bike lasted years before Florida weather claimed it for rust, so on and so forth.
Unfortunately, I met a lot of people who treated Walmart as something to look down on, even if Target was very similar in substance. But the difference in visuals alone seems to have done a number on people's preferences of the stores, because that curated appearance in Target seems in line with the same mentality for why people liked Publix in my area.

Target has solid basics, some prices are actually cheaper than Walmart and it’s easier to do returns. Honestly I shop for groceries in a loop- Grocery Outlet, Winco, Walmart, the local Co-op, then if there’s something else on sale in the food section at target I’ll get it.
I get all my workout clothes on clearance at target- so I do go there often and look around after work. I haven’t bought clothes at Walmart since they collaborated with Miley Cyrus when I was in middle school.
I think Walmarts low prices- online store, app, and grocery pickup/being literally everywhere is why they are so popular. I’ve never seen one with a McDonald though- it’s usually subway, and I never see people eating there because Walmarts hot deli food is so cheap.
Basically: I shop wherever the deals are best- I don’t care about much else anymore. I try to shop at Winco over Walmart because it’s employee owned, but they have way less locations. I can only shop the way I do (deal hunting/comparing) because I have a non traditional job where I’m constantly on the road during the day and can stop into a shop for 20 minutes randomly.

I don't actually live near a Target and did not growing up. I lived near one for a spell and still didn't use it much. I have gone to a Target probably less than a dozen times in my life. I would have to go out of my way at cost to myself to go to a Target. Target has no draw for me and no nostalgia or anything so I really don't get the online infatuation. It's a more expensive Walmart.

For me, Walmart is just a store where I go to buy essentials. When I'm in the store, I'm there to get in and get out. On the other hand, when I go into Target, I never really buy anything there; I just go to look around and scan the aisles, which is something I don't do with Walmart. Ever since I was younger, going to Target was an event because I saw the store as this really fancy kind of bougie place.

Its easy to assume Target would be a top 3 or top 5 retailer! I think a lot of that has to do with Target's demographics, particularly in comparison to Walmart. Target is much more popular with young people, and young people are far more likely to be posting Tik Toks & posting content in general. I have seen Walmart influencers, but they tend to be older, with children etc. Different vibe & different exposure.

Believe it or not, there was a time when Target was considered a glorified Kmart; in other words, it was not very cool. Kids didn’t really want the clothes from there very badly. This was what I remembered around the mid 90s in Washington state; it just wasn’t desirable to shop at during that time. It was just ok.
Now a little “Target run” will leave ya broke.

Walmart tends to feel like just an accepted part of culture here in America, a household name in the grocery space. It might as well be a grocery store that just happens to have the other things you need. Target on the other hand is seen as like a browsing special occasion store where you go when you have more money to throw around or want to browse for long times. They have more interesting inventory when it comes to clothes and home goods.

When I lived 10 minutes from target and 10 minutes from Walmart, I used to go to Target because it wasn’t as crowded and people were usually better behaved. But that was for leisure shopping or to only get a few items. If I had an actual grocery haul to do, I made myself go to Walmart because I knew I’d save money. Now I live rurally and go to Walmart almost daily. People here are less crazy, and the closest target is an hour away

As an American when shops primarily at Walmart (like 95% of the time) but also does love Target, here’s the main reasons why, for me:
    1. I live out in the country and Walmart is more accessible, 10min away vs almost 30min away. I would say accessibility in rural areas in Walmarts number 1 advantage. There are lots of rural parts of America where Walmart is basically the only place to shop.
    2. Walmart is much cheaper, especially the groceries. At the end of the day cheaper wins when I’m buying a week’s worth of groceries.
    3. The store experience part is 100% true. Walmart feels comfortable but when I go there I get what I need and I leave. I even use the app to find things faster. At Target I like to shop around, see what they have and go aisle by aisle. Part of that is just me being there less but it’s also exactly what you said. The store is more spacious and comfortable and encourages you to spend more time there.
TLDR; If Walmart and Target were equivalent in frequency and cost then the experience in store would make Target my absolute go to but at the end of the day Walmart is closer to my house and cheaper. It makes so much sense that Target is worth talking about and posting about where Walmart is just a place where people silently shop.

The stuff these stores sell makes a difference too -- Walmart is MONSTROUS, there are stores everywhere, and it's really the cheapest option for groceries almost everywhere, so people visit it once a week or more. I HATE shopping at WallyWorld, but it's often 25% cheaper than lots of my local supermarkets, depending on where I am. Amazon is also gigantic, but it's getting progressively enshittified, so it's probably dropping -- if you're buying something other than groceries, you want to be able to touch it, try it on, and take it back if it doesn't work -- and the others are propped up by the type of stuff they sell. Home Depot sells big expensive items like drywall and bandsaws and lawnmowers, so their sales are bolstered by that. Costco is a cult, and once you pay for the membership you buy everything there -- or everything feasible.

There’s very little difference in cost between Target and Walmart health/beauty, cleaning products, etc. now, and Aldi groceries are the cheapest of all. I will go to Target instead of Walmart if I have to find something at a big chain box store that I can't find local or at the co-op I work at but mainly because Walmart has kind of sided politically with the right wing and target has at least in certain avenues taken a more left-leaning stance on things.
That said I'm in getting the one item I can't find any place else and then I'm out the door.
It's also worth noting that my mom does a lot of price shopping for anything and everything we need and Walmart stopped being the cheapest place for most things several years ago. It basically is hit or miss whether Target or Walmart is cheaper at least in our area. And a lot of times the sales at the grocery store even in the pharmacy aisle is genuinely cheaper than going to any of the big box stores.

All gummie vitamins (ALLEGEDLY) are misleading. The amount of sugar and gelatin and other stuff to get them to BE gummies leaves little to no room for actual vitamin content. And legally if it contains even a trace, they can say that it's in the gummie on the bottle. If a 1lb bag of dirt contains 1gram of gold, they can say "contains gold" but you're still buying the majority of dirt. Most healthy adults do not even need vitamins, pls consult with an actual doctor and get a vitamin panel, but even then, if you DO need replacements, gummies are not the way. This is not medical advice, this is a call to action to be an informed consumer.
