No Buy Year Completed! - (Buying Nothing for a Year was Life Changing!)

  • For the last 12 months I've bought absolutely nothing but essentials, sometimes referred to as a No Buy Year or a No Spend Year. I did this in a bid to save the most money I possibly could, so that not only would this help with my financial goals, but that should the worst happen through this weird time, I'd be ok financially. Through completing a year long no buy (along with other money saving methods) I managed to save more than 50% of my take home salary which is both mind boggling and life changing. I'm fairly certain I will have changed my relationship with money forever.
Whilst completing this no buy year, I also bought no clothing for two years, and I've shared my experience on my channel. If you are looking to do a no buy year, or a smaller goal of a no buy month, be sure to check out my other videos as you may find tips and insights that might help you. Doing a no buy challenge isn't easy, and I don't recommend as a permanent lifestyle, but it certainly has its benefits. You might want to take a slightly less extreme approach and try a low buy year or a low buy month instead - you'll still find plenty of tips here on my channel.
I placed one order for personal care items in the last 12 months and in the interest of transparency, this is what I ordered:
3 x Caudalie Shower Gel (all now used up)
2 x Caudalie Facial Wash (one empty, one still in use)
3 x Caudalie Lip Balms (two empty, one still in use)
2 x Kerastase Shampoo (one empty, one still in use)
2 x Kerastase Conditioner (one empty, one still in use)
Over the last few years, I've come to the realisation that whilst a certain level of material things do add to your life, more stuff will not necessarily make you happier. This realisation hit me when I looked around my home that was filled with stuff (so much so I felt I needed a bigger house) and couldn't say I was particularly happier than when I lived in Spain (in 2008) when everything I had with me fit in one large drawer and a very small wardrobe.
These days I prefer to adopt a buy less, buy better approach, with a focus on quality over quantity, removing the clutter, and utilising my money in the best way possible.

I also heard this from all 4 of my Grandparents, and my Great-Grandmother.! So, we did! MY WWII parents added "is this (car) trip necessary? to save on gas (which was strictly rationed) and to bunch up errands into one trip and plan a circular route and take other people with me and do things together!
I still quilt using all our old clothes, make candles and soap (using my Grandmother's recipe) and bread. soups and stews and sauces are good ways to use up leftovers, refinish small wood furniture and make our own music, artwork and scrapbooks etc. never at a loss for something interesting and useful to do!

Absolutely right! I had a full wardrobe and I decided to wear it out before buying anything new. How long did I wait? Four years! FOUR years! I think three times before buying anything now; a very good experience. How much do I save every year? 2 salaries + 26%tax= CAD 10.000.

I started to put away £500 a month. I was planning on leaving my job as I was being bullied. Although I was earning quite a lot it gave me great satisfaction to say "I'm out of here. Do it yourself". I had been leading up to this for maybe 10 years. My health was declining due to workload etc. I also had 3 miscarriages whilst working. I decided to give my body a break and walked out. Everyone thought I was mad. However a year after I managed to have my son who is now 2 and I wouldn't want it any other way. Doing a no buy and pay yourself first was the best thing I have ever done for myself.

Way to go!! Literally, lol. Enjoy your kid, they grow fast...long days and short years, somehow. Pick your battles. I focused on safety and morals...the rest works out(she's 25 and awesome). Buy clothes at thrifts, a lot of stuff is close to new...Kids grow fast. Ask your friends for hand-me-downs if their kid is bigger. And if at some point they wear their sandals on opposite feet...as long as they don't trip...don't trip, if they do it's safety... I'm in charge there...responsible for raising a decent human who contributes to society in someway. @@tammystockley-loughlin7680 Aww thanks. You're right about the long days, and what seems like short nights. As fast as I get to sleep I get woken up for more 'learning and non stop getting everything out of a cupboard or draw that isn't empty already. Safety and morals. I think you're absolutely right, thank you. I'm already making him wear a 'high vis vest' to go over his coat if we go out for a walk at night - although if I know it will be super busy I will use reins. Hello Tara
I am sad to hear that your job (workload & stress) took a toll on your health & you had miscarriages. That should not be happened. Nobody should suffer because of jobs. Jobs is for us to practice our skill & knowledge, to give our time for service and in return, we are paid salary.
If it starts to be detrimental to our body, soul, hearts, then NO. It's good that now you are doing well. Live on your term. 👍

@@KirstyKirby Just talk to most people over 60, that was a way of life for majority of North Americans..... basics only. Large families and hand me downs. We lived basics unlike what those younger think living basics is today.
Outhouse, gas lanterns, water pump outdoors, maybe not all the time, but try a year of that,..... with 7 children in a house and only a wood stove.
It is amazing how one can live with basics.
When I say basics, I mean toilet paper and a toilet in the house, running water, indoor plumbing, a good heat source, an electric stove, now that is a luxury and many times I forget what life was like for that one year when we were young, and then many years with below poverty level...
Basics are sometimes leaving out butter, and no margarine, and no peanut butter. Having bread, fruit and veggies is enough. Meat is a luxury, but that did not hurt us because less meat is good. Watering down shampoo and dish soap.
Watering down ketchup bottles to make it last.
Absolutely no frills with food, and cosmetics were unheard of, other than the huge bottle of lotion or shampoo. Cheap brands.
A huge honking bag of puffed wheat.
      Ah, the good ol days.

I did a 6-month no buy during Spring and Summer last year! My husband and I were, like you said, “aggressively saving,” which we called “financial lockdown.” We were able to pay off both of our cars, and we’re now basically debt-free, which feels amazing. We’ve loosened our budget a bit again, but not buying anything extra for a while has changed us, too!

Financial lockdown - love it! 😂 That’s amazing Keira, fantastic result and I can imagine it feels absolutely brilliant!
It will be interesting to see what happens as lockdowns start to lift across the world. Some analysts are predicting a huge bounce back in spending and that lots will spend all their savings in some sort of mad spree - but I’m not so convinced. I think an awful lot of people, like you and I, will have recognised that we need a lot less and will continue to save regardless.

      @KirstyKirby  2 роки тому +25

Hi Sarah I know exactly what you mean, doing a no buy has been incredibly eye opening as I too found that over time I was less interested in ‘stuff’. As you say there will always be things we need and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having things you want - but I’ve found that when I sit back and wait, most of the things I find I’m not that bothered about having. Whilst I officially finished my no buy when filming this, I’ve not bought anything other than one thrifted dress!
Good luck with your savings goals, I’ve massively found having this helped me really question if I wanted something. I am currently awaiting exchange on a property and being so close to achieving that goal makes all the ‘sacrifice’ feel completely worthwhile. Xx

I continue to use what I have - it’s amazing how long things last when you just use them in a normal everyday life way. I started putting a sticker on for example my face cleanser when I opened it (started using) and it helped me see that I truly only need to buy a face cleanser twice a year so then I can buy two for the year if I see a good sale.

    Hi Kirsty
    Happy belated Christmas from Singapore!
I like to hear No Buying for A Year from you. It's like giving ourselves a break from relentless material want, which shoved to our faces by fast fashion, malls, media, all business in general. I switched job from corporate to Medical Frontliners, which requires me to wear nurse uniform & full set of PPE. That also makes me go to bare mode. No makeup, no jewelery, no heels. I also eat at hospital canteen, which is heavily subsided. I just spend money on my family meals & groceries. Guess how much I saved for a year? 70% of my net salary.
Good job Kristy! Keep it up 🙏

Thankyou for this inspiration for 2022 and beyond. I have some planning to do but this makes me feel motivated to Want! To save. I want to start by consolidating what I have (as in personal items at home across categories like furniture, makeup and clothing to then sell off or donate what I don’t need ( or fit into etc ). I think having a goal is important to keep you focussed. After coming through the last few years of ill health, I want to focus on my wellbeing in many areas to increase my enjoyment of life. Apart from food and personal care items, I don’t need for any extras. I want to start my own small business with minimal overheads that I can run from home, and extra savings will come in handy.
Have a great year ahead, hope you keep healthy and safe. Philippa 💐

I appreciate your video and I am going to try this. One thing I spend a lot of money on is eating out and ordering delivery meals. I am going to try to limit that to once a month this coming year. Also, I tend to thrift store shop, which seems to be smart, but I tend to buy things I really don't need. So, this coming year I can only buy things that I absolutely need when I thrift. No more buying vintage jewelry just because it is pretty and is only $4. No more buying another winter scarf because it is cashmere and only $2.99 (I have a whole closet full of scarves and tend to wear the same two or three and none of the others. I think I will be surprised when I count up the savings at the end of the year. Thanks for the idea. This inspired me.
